Happy first day of Lather Games everyone! This is my third Games and I’m excited to see what madness ensues this year. Big prayer hands emojis to the sponsors and judges this year for making it all possible. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼.

Onto the shave: Tabac! I got a sample of this with a PIF from u/Ramjet615, proceeded to forget about it for some months, then when I found it I figured I would just save it for Lather Games. So thanks Ram! I scooped a chunk into my bowl and attacked with my brush. I got a pretty voluminous lather in no time. I get the “grandma’s purse” comparison from the scent but the somewhat dusty leather and vague florals work for me. But the soap was slick and though a fresh blade in Sheraton can be rough sometimes the Tabac felt very protective. I definitely get why this stuff has such a dedicated following.

To connect the post shave and fragrance I picked, as I’m sure a lot of us do I get synesthesia with scents sometimes and Tabac and King of Bourbon both fall easily into the “brown” scent grouping. And so does Memoirs of a Trespasser, with its woody vanilla notes playing nicely with the vanilla from King of Bourbon.

Vegan day and I’m glad to represent fellow New Jerseyans Catie’s Bubbles which IMO has one of the best bases in wetshaving, vegan or otherwise. Also a big shout out to the Wizard of Waterlyptus Place u/jeffm54321 for recommending this awesome scent. I paired Waterlyptus with Stirling’s EMP as both are fruity and summery, ‘twas a good pairing.

I’m a proud two-time MMOC Whisperer and was reminded today why this is one of my favorite razors because I had a really great shave with it. Once you get over the learning curve with the MMOC it is hard to beat.

Today I'm celebrating Almonday with my first proper Almond Leather shave outside of an ill-fated and ultimately DQ'd shave with an Almond Leather bar soap during last year's Games and a smush that had lost most of its scent during the 2021 Lather Games. And I don't know why I only ever use this soap during internet shaving competitions as the scent is marvelous. Most almond shave soaps I've tried are too sweet but the leather and frankincense balance it out very nicely. Mood Indigo was good choice for post shave and frag, because both have a picture of a mammoth on the packaging and they smell nice together.

It is common knowledge around R/WS that the MM in u/RedMosquitoMM stands for MicroMatic, so I paid tribute to last year's Champion by shaving with a Micromatic razor and posting about my coffee and a song recommendation as well. I found Molly Tuttle's music the same way most people discover exceptionally talented female country/bluegrass/Americana singer-songwriters, which is by searching Apple Music for one of my favorite Rancid songs (Olympia, WA) and coming across her excellent cover version of it in the search results.

July 5 2023 - Lather Games Day 5 - May Sweeney Todd Strike Me Down

    • Pre-Shave: Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd
    • Brush: 🚫🖌️😓
    • Razor: Venus cartridge
    • Lather: Evolution of Smooth - Sensitive Shave Cream
    • Post Shave: Alaffia - Everyday Shea Lotion
    • Post Shave: Serving a dark and a vengeful God
    • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann - Seville

Today I celebrated the fifth day of Lather Games by going to New York City and seeing Broadway’s smash hit shaving-themed musical Sweeney Todd. I wish I could say it was strictly for the Games and that Josh Groban (the titular Todd) lathered me up after the performance, but alas this was a present for my wife so the opportunities for Lather Games related shenanigans had to pass unfulfilled. I was really hopeful that the merch stand would have a brush or really any shaving stuff, but sadly it did not. I was tempted to try and find the merchandise manager and recommend u/J33pGuy13 and u/merikus in case they were looking to have some custom Sweeney Todd Zenith brushes made but didn’t have the time. The show was great even for someone like myself who is not all that enamored of musical theatre, although truthfully the Demon Barber of Fleet Street’s lather could use more water.

Now that we’re home it was time for my annual shave with my wife’s crap that she gets from Target. I must say it was slightly better than year’s past since she now uses this cream stuff instead of true canned goop like she used to. I probably could have used a brush to help whip this stuff up, but decided to use it like 99% of the people that buy it do and just kinda smear it over my face with wet hands. EOS is a step above said canned goop; the scent is vaguely soapy but not very strong and the cream does provide some protection. The worst part is using her dull-ass Venus cartridge. I bought her a Leaf razor last Christmas that currently sits in the shower sad and unused. So I did one quick WTG pass so I could log this shave and finished off with some lotion, also from Target. Sweeney Todd would surely shed a single tear and then slit my throat if he knew I had followed his story with such a garbage shave. I did follow the shave up with a spritz of Seville, a barbershop scent I’m sure Mr. Todd would approve of.

And for the Daily Challenge, I’ve been into wood inspired scents recently so my ideal fragrance would be like the rich wood of Tom Ford’s Bois Marocain but with a creamy sandalwood base like Barrister and Mann’s sandalwood.

A tasty trickhole of Tahiti, a splendid summery scent that I initially bought just the soap and splash but eventually had to go back for the EdP. I actually used my 2022 Lather Games prize of a $10 Noble Otter gift card to help pay for it so it all comes full circle. Bay Rum. Very spicy! Entropy Man. Peppery! Oud Wood. Spicy! This combination was a bit weird but I did end up enjoying it.

My other hobbies are reading, I'm currrently reading Hilary Mantel's The Mirror and The Light and Orlando Figes' recent book on the Crimean War. I also have a good amount of Legos, I really like the car sets especially. So yeah, nothing else as unusual as shaving but they keep me busy.

This was a nice combination and I’m glad I saved a bit of Fougere Angelique, enough to get through two passes. Following the woody citrus of FA with the blast of orange from Nordost and then more woody citrus from Nio was very pleasant on a hot summer day. This was a rare morning when I was up before my daughter and (less rare) my wife so I grabbed my gear and headed downstairs to the kitchen to set up. Took my SOTD picture and grabbed a spoon rest and smushed some soap in. I began to build a lather and actually, the slight raised edges of the spoon rest make it more effective than the classic lather plate, though lather was escaping out of the divot where the spoon would sit. I built a serviceable lather and got to work.

Today I’m sacrificing the scent/post/frag synchronicity in my chase for 30 post shave products and 30 frags. Glad I was able to score a kitchen shave though as I definitely missed this challenge last year. Thè Noir’s florals, fruits and jasmine paired nicely with the florals and fruit of Falling Into the Sea, but the vetiver and citrus blast from Grapefroot killed any connective scent-thread.

And now I’m posting this from my daughter’s friend’s escape room birthday party like.

    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann - Sandalwood balm

Paganini's Violin is such a pleasant, clean scent and Soft Hearts is such a fine base, this shave was very nice. The Sheraton (REGUS proof) can be bitey but wasn't today, it was very smooth. Everything's coming up Oswald today. Draw a Soap day is one of my favorites during Lather Games, and it was fun taking 20 minutes from my work day to make my contribution. The lettering needs work but overall I think it came out pretty well.

For scent-synchronicity, the clean scent of Paganini's Violin went nicely with the creamy Barrister sandalwood, which like Paganini's Violin is not very complex but is very comforting. And I feel the same way about Shire, the dry-down is simple and comforting, with a bit of grassiness to add some complexity lacking from the soap and balm.

    • Post Shave: Spearhead - Sea Spice Lime
    • Fragrance: Spearhead - Sea Spice Lime

Summer Scents day, aka Sea Spice Lime day. I think the judges know that today is for Sea Spice Lime, because the theme description for today reads:

Product must be: - Explicitly marketed as a Summer scent OR - Explicitly marketed for a holiday occuring between Summer Solstice and Autumnal Equinox OR - Prominently feature aquatic or citrus accords.

And it’s the last part I would like to draw your attention to. See, on Spearhead’s site, the product page for Sea Spice Lime doesn’t mention summer or any summer holiday. The judges know this, and so they carved out an exception to the summer theme rules which allows the two things in Sea Spice Lime’s name, aquatic Sea Spice and citrusy Lime. Using this unbeatable logic, it’s clear the judges are saying, sure, summer scents are OK, but we really strongly encourage the use of Sea Spice Lime, so much so that we are bending the rules to allow it. Sea Spice Lime. Sea Spice Lime.

My SOTD is arranged around the color white. Brush handle, razor handle and soap labeling all prominently feature white. Sure, a pedantic physicist may argue that white is not a color, since it does not exist on the visible spectrum of light waves that scientifically define a color, but neither does pink and we all recognize that as a color because human eyes are able to process it. I also like that my picture is like an inverse of u/Tetriside’s.

    • Post Shave: Wholly Kaw - Tempest

So fluffy! A good excuse to use my traveling buddy, this sample tub of Barnegat Bay. This soap has been to four different countries (here it is in an Irish castle’s bathroom), 7 or 8 states and even got to visit the Barnegat Lighthouse, where the photo on the label was taken. It’s rare that I actually use this soap at home because I will use it for days at a time while I’m away. And would you look at that, coconut oil is the third ingredient. I used my little boar brush which fits nicely in the small tub and switched things up by bowl lathering today. I had been a staunch bowl latherer up until MOARCH Madness when I face-lathered every day and never looked back. I was reminded today why I liked bowl lathering, which is a better control of how much water you’re adding to the soap; that being said, it wasn’t enough to convince me to go back. Face lathering is the way.

The overarching theme of my gear today is a day at the beach that turns rainy, then a walk on the beach after the rain stops. Barnegat Bay is a variation on a Bay Rum theme meant to invoke the New Jersey shore. Then Tempest takes over and the ozone and and rain drive you inside. Once the rain stops, you go out and breathe the salty air and seaweed on the beach from Oud Minerale.

Oh and I’m glad to be able to use a Catie’s Bubbles soap on their sponsor spotlight day. Catie’s Bubbles ++

Truthfully I don’t get much patchouli from YRP until it’s lathered and on my face, then it starts to poke through the rose and citrus. I chose Black Watch as the post shave since it does have incense in the scent notes, just to complete the hippy dippy duo. And Embrace goes nicely with Black Watch, both are dark and vaguely mysterious with a fruity note bringing some approachability. The connecting thread being that all three of these scents have a subtle fruity note, and are all brilliant.

For the song, it doesn’t get much more hippy dippy baloney than beat poetry, so here is Allen Ginsberg’s musical version of William Blake’s The Divine Image. I heard this on the radio today (Princeton University’s college station in case you’re wondering why the fuck this was on the radio) and I was like, damn, I wish I had some mushrooms to go with this. And that’s some hippy thinking right there.

Don't have a lot to report, sadly we had to have our dog euthanized last night so just kind of faking my way through work in between bouts of staring into space and feeling sad. The shave was nice, I was able to concentrate on something else for a bit and that was a relief. I wasn’t in the mood to shave Not the Way though, the last thing I need today is irritation. Iced Coffee is probably my coldest soap, the menthol effect builds during the course of the shave until the third pass sometimes has my eyes watering. And the splash is both cold and stings, which I actually enjoy in a "hurts so good" way. Got a nice Bonus Stack in my picture today, since everyone knows shave wares precariously piled is the true meaning of the Lather Games. And yes I frequently use that beer mug for my coffee since it holds more coffee than a regular mug.

Tobacco Vanille paired well with Iced Coffee, though they don't share any specific scent notes they both have a muted sweetness to them and fall firmly into the "brown" scents category I have in my head.

So Death it was today, which hit way too close to home considering what I’ve been through this week, but at least I got through the shave without bursting into tears.

No major through lines or connectivity between the soap and post shave choices today; I went with Cologne Russe because I thought I had an aftershave sample of Le Grand Chypre but it turns out it was this instead. And Rumble because Rumble rules.

No time for a video but my favorite non HD wetshaving YouTuber is our very own u/sgrdddy, his videos helped me when I was first starting out and I trust his takes on gear and scents.

First of, shout out to u/Priusaurus for providing some memespiration. Count me out for nacho cheese themed shaving gear but I don’t want to yuck anyone’s yum so I hope it’s awesome.

Onto Barbershop day, when I realized I had used my Seville frag earlier this month I called an audible and decided to use three variations on barbershop scents from three great artisans. I get mostly spices and powder from BarrBarr, while Seville leans way more citrusy with a powdery base and not much, if any, spice to my nose. Hygge topped it off nicely and to me is definitely more of a wintery scent, the muted citrus quickly giving way to bergamot and oakmoss.

I have been saving the last few sprays from my bottle of Cerberus and was lucky enough to recently pick up a soap and splash to go with it so today I am enjoying my first and most likely last (until I end up searching for another bottle of the frag, I love it that much) trickhole of this phenomenal scent. Milksteak is a base I'm not very familiar with, only having one other soap in it and that one I use sparingly since it is special (Slut Dragon). It is so soft! I built a nice face lather and reveled in the stone fruit and resinous goodness of a triple dose of Cerberus.

As for today's challenge, I don't have OSMA or any other (non luxury) alum. It was one thing I never picked up when I was starting out and have never felt the need for. Some cold water and an alcohol splash are how I prefer to finish off my shaves, rubbing a rock on my face seems a bit woo-woo to me. But I'm a big believer in "you do you" so if it makes people happy, keep rubbing that rock on your face. In fact, this is the only Ozma I get down with. I may have annoyed whomever is djudging this post, if they are in the pro-alum camp, so I will close with a bit of alum history.

Historically, alum was a huge component of early international trade. It was used in many things, like the manufacture of glass and dyeing of cloth. For a long time the Turks held a monopoly on the production of alum, and they grew tremendously rich from this trade. But the Turks would use the money from the alum trade to wage war against Christianity, so it was very fortuitous when a huge deposit of alum was discovered in 1453 in Papal territory outside of Rome. Pope Pius II and his successor started a new monopoly in the European alum trade, effectively banning trade in Turkish alum under threat of excommunication. The Medici bank worked with the Popes to control this trade and both parties made assloads of ducats from it. The Papacy used the money from the alum trade to wage war against the Turks as revenge.

Fast forward to the reign of Henry VIII, who broke England away from Catholicism when he married Anne Boleyn. Henry was almost always close to war with the Pope and lived under constant threat of excommunication. That put pressure on the English industries that needed alum to function, because the Pope could threaten to cut off England's supply. It has been suggested that one of the reasons Henry was pushed to ally himself with the House of Cleves for his fourth marriage was that alum had been discovered in Cleves, and securing this alliance with marriage would guarantee a non-Papal supply of alum for England.

First of all, and this is not just ass-kissing for judge points, but much respect to u/J33pGuy13 for seemingly making at least one soapmaker realize there was a huge untapped market for non-terrible, non-meme banana-related soaps and getting in on the action. Like all of us, I am trying to limit new purchases (that being said, fuck GRUYE) so I let this release pass me by, but I was so intrigued by it that when I saw someone offering it up for trade I couldn't resist. And it lived up to the hype, the scent is a very natural banana, not artificial/candylike at all, and has a spicy element that contrasts the banana beautifully. You would never expect a scent like this to work as well as it does. I used the MMOC again today because it has a reputation for being scary, although once you get used to it it's a fine daily shaver.

Ébène Fumé (trying to earn some judge points here by getting all of the diacritics correct) was a great pairing with Boonana, as both are mysterious and spicy, with the smoky wood of Ébène Fumé playing nicely with the long-lasting scent from the SW splash.

And finally, a note of appreciation for the djudges who volunteered to look at a bunch of sink whiskers. Photo here and as an apology for having to look at that, here are some dachshunds to serve as a palate cleanser:

CREAM day and lucky for me, Catie's Bubbles Luxury Cream base counts because I used my wife's shaving cream during Goop Day. And damn, Blugère (respect the diacritic!) is the shit. I've lived in New Jersey for my whole life and the fact that it inspired such a phenomenal scent fills me with state pride. The Luxury Cream base is soft and the lather it makes is creamy and slick. It's just a total pleasure to shave with this stuff. I broke out my G Bar today, a razor that I love the look of but have failed to make a connection with as sometimes it can be a bit rough for me. No issues to report today though, the razor was fine.

I topped it off with Mousse Illuminèe, which is connected to Blugère not only because it also features a mostly-ignored diacritic, but both have a woody base with green fougere elements, except Mousse Illuminèe cranks up the very subtle oakmoss in Blugère up to 11. I bet this would go well with Varen as well, for a real oakmoss bomb.

As for today's challenge, Blugère is a goddamn treasure and I won't sully it by sticking a sock, clean or otherwise, in it.

Today’s shave is brought to you by Leather. I had planned on using three dupes today, but when I realized that Weekend in Malibu isn’t a dupe, I switched it up to chase after some scent-synchronicity value instead. The leather in Blacksmith, a dupe of Bulgari’s Man in Black, is more muted, a base against which the amber and spices contrast. Leviathan brings the leather forward and then Fucking Fabulous really makes it shine. I’m normally not a huge leather scents guy but Fucking Fabulous lives up to the name.

Smells aside, the shave itself was dry. Since I normally like a dripping wet lather, and try to push the hydration as much as I can, I didn’t soak my brush, wet my face, or use any water at all during this shave. I didn’t even rinse off my razor during the shave, and it looked pretty sad by the end. I’m not ready to start convincing people to subscribe to r/dryshaving yet but the shave could have been worse. I did get more sting than usual from the splash, but a few hours later there’s not any irritation. So is water really necessary? Fuck yeah it is. If you’re lather ain’t dripping, you must be tripping. Put it on my tombstone.

Finally it is Fougère Friday, I've been looking forward to this one on the calendar because who among us doesn't love a good fougère? I recently acquired this set of Fougere Mania and have been looking forward to giving it a go. Once lathered it reveals itself to be a lavender forward fougère, and the oakmoss and amber comes through with the splash. I finished it off with Ineke Ruhland's Idyllwild, which is described on her website as an aromatic fougère. It's a really beautiful scent, the lavender, grapefruit and pine notes are all very well blended. I've been saving this sample of it for a long time now and will eventually need to invest in a full bottle.

And now a haiku devoted to the internet's best shaving competition:

The scent theme today is a progression of fruity scents, from the herbal Strawberry Rhubarb to lemony Sonder to the fruity chewing gum of Boat Drinks. I won this tub in a PIF a year or so ago and I think this was only the second time I’ve ever used it. The scent is fine, but nothing that special. Sonder on the other hand, super special stuff. And I was happy to use my AP Shave Co. knotted brush on their sponsor day.

Unfortunately I was up early to drive the family up to Manhattan to take our daughter to see Wicked for her birthday. It was her first Broadway show and first time in NYC. She had a ball and I managed to stay awake through 90% of the show. Afterwards my brother came over from Brooklyn and we had a lovely dinner together. All that is to say, I didn’t have time to shave any extraneous body parts for lather points today. Unfortunately this means that I’m no Superman.

An excuse to use two Wetshaving Hall of Fame scents on my special day is very welcome (seriously though thanks for not making today Canned Goop day). The shave was glorious, I truly love the whiskey/leather/plum/a million other notes of Fenchurch, and it is one of the few aftershaves that sticks around long enough for my wife to notice, and smells good enough for her to remark on. One of the few others that she has complimented is Sonder, which she claimed smelled like somewhere specific at Disney. Which for her is as high of praise as it gets.

And for the daily challenge, a pair of lather audit pictures. Lather picture and one more.

I won this set in a PIF from u/rocketk455 a few years ago and he is a current Lather Games participant; I was glad to be able to use this set today as it is summertime favorite of mine. The cooling level in the soap is refreshing without being eye-watering, and the splash hits a similar balance. The scent is great too, I remember it being nothing like I expected when I first got my sniffer on it and it has grown on me a lot ever since. And I had to use my Dogwood handle brush on their sponsor day.

The generous spirit of the sub has always been one of the things that has kept me telling strangers what I'm shaving with for like three years now; the brush was the only hardware today that I paid for. The smooth and simple Tech came from (I believe) u/verdadkc and this sample of Sundrunk was also tossed in by someone with another purchase.

The scent component of the shave today is more conceptual than strictly matching notes. Rope Swing is a summer day spent swimming and splashing in fresh water under the shade of some big trees, while Sundrunk is emerging from the shade into the heat of the sun for the walk home.

And so for the daily challenge I will say something nice about u/jeffm54321 because I appreciate his opening my mind to Waterlyptus and his trollish but ultimately welcoming spirit. And because of this trollish spirit I ended up with the soap and splash I used today, because he entered the PIF but did not follow Rocket's rules,, and was ultimately DQ'd leading to me winning the redraw. So thanks for Waterlyptus and Rope Swing.

Happy Christmas in July everyone. I went with a trio of vaguely winter products that don't have a lot in common. Christmas Coquito is a nostalgic scent for me as I saw someone offer it up in a wickededge thread because they didn't like the scent. I jumped on the offer and they sent me the soap and splash for free. So it was my first artisan wetshaving scent and I spent a few months thinking the hot face I got from the soap (probably from the cinnamon) was normal for all artisanal soaps. I got about 75% through the tub over the course of a month or two before ordering some other soaps and tossing the rest of the tub out, but not before scooping some into a sample container that I delve into once a year during Christmas day in Lather Games. And the shave was fine, I overslept today so I did a quick two passes (and didn't have time for a photo) but the lather was fine and the hot face helped wake me up.

I did my passes with my left hand, and it wasn't bad. Easy challenge.

Wildcard Wednesday and this year I grabbed my shampoo bar from the shower, rubbed it all over my face, and got to shaving. The Tea Tree essential oil made my eyes water a bit, and I'm not a huge fan of the scent. A Stirling shampoo bar works decently as a shave soap, but it is pretty difficult to build an effective lather with on your face. I think it would work a little better if you were to shave in the shower and could build up a better lather on your head and transfer it to your face.

No scent connectivity today I knew there would be a few "schedule losses" (as Doc Rivers would put it) as trying to get 30 post shaves and 30 frags means not everything will always line up super well.

For the den tour, I have a cabinet in my bathroom closet with a shelf for soap/splash sets that I use frequently or recently acquired and want to have accessible. I also have a bin under the bathroom sink that has solo soaps and another bin in my other closet that has more soap/splash sets and some other random post shave stuff and soaps. I also have a dopp bag that stores all my soap samples and has a bottom compartment where I keep more razors.. My medicine cabinet holds my brushes, more frequently used razors and blades. I did forget to photograph my fragrances, which live in my bedside table, I will update later if I have a chance.

I received this set in a trade, mostly because lavender is very underrepresented in my den and I had never tried anything by Tallow and Steel. And still hadn’t, up until this afternoon, as I never got around to actually using this set. The performance is totally standard, slick but nothing out of this world. And the scent is…lavendery, I’m not a huge lavender guy so it doesn’t do a whole lot for me. Maybe it’s the Mammoth fanboy in me but I like Ben’s take on it in Beloved more. I’m gonna have to upgrade my sample size of the EdP to a full size at some point.

I waited for my wife to go pick up my daughter from camp, grabbed my gear and headed out to the back porch. It’s way too hot to shave outside, but it’s the Lather Games and sacrifices must be made. I sweated into my lather but ultimately persevered.

Weekend in Malibu - $14.25 soap, $13.65 splash

    GEM Featherweight: $5.00 at auction

    Omega 11137 - $9.99

    Stirling EdT - $18.95

    GEM Blade - $0.45

Total $62.29 for my cheapest gear. Sticking with this stuff and not being seduced by the siren song of sundry soaps and splashes and surely you would see the sought-after promised land of Shaving Savings.

To investigate why Stirling remains the best value, I decided to take a page from u/Priusaurus' great interviews and query the soapmakers directly, and maybe see if anyone there would join me in a shave. I packed up my gear, typed Stirling Headquarters into Google Maps and headed out. Upon arrival at Lord Stirling's quarters I was not scared off by the sign that said "Not Open to Public" because I am no ordinary member of the public, I am a Lather Games participant and that status gets you special treatment, not unlike how only Olympic athletes are allowed in the Olympic Village. Unfortunately, nobody was home but since I still needed to shave I figured I would make the best of it and shave there anyway.

Of course, this meant shaving outside in the heat for a second day in a row since my failed attempt to do this yesterday by trying to convince Rod and others that Varen is a lavender soap (it's the second listed scent note!) met with well-deserved mockery and scrub status being bestowed upon me.

I set up my gear on the commemorative plaque outside for some #photocontest history action, and then started to face lather. I stopped to pop a lather selfie, having styled my hair in homage to u/chronnoisseur42O's great 'do, and got to work. I completed my first pass which was somewhat difficult without a mirror, especially my cheeks, went back to my brush and lathered up for a second pass. While all this was going on there was a light flow of traffic on the road behind me; hopefully between the curvy road and peaceful scenery they were too busy to notice the guy shaving in the grass. I got through my two passes as mosquitos chewed my legs, toweled off and put on some Weekend in Malibu splash. I then hit myself with a few sprays of Lightish Red, which for me is a very nostalgic scent because it is a dupe of Abercrombie and Fitch Fierce, which was my perfume of choice back in high school. Both Weekend in Malibu and Lightish Red have a fresh, aquatic citrusy feel, with lily of the valley and sandalwood in the background so not only was this shave frugal but it was a great combination of scents.

After my shave I figured I would do a little sightseeing, so I drove through a nearby covered bridge on my way to the Memorial Arch, where Stirling's name was engraved for what I can only assume is their contribution to frugal shaves.

Now if you'll indulge me while I dust off my history degree, I shaved in front of the house where Major General William Alexander, Lord Stirling, was headquartered during the cold and hungry winter of 1777 at Valley Forge.

William Alexander, Lord Stirling, was born in New York in 1727 to émigré Scottish parents and joined the New Jersey militia as a commissioned colonel during the Revolutionary War. He rose to prominence during the Battle of Long Island, when he led a rear-guard action that allowed the American army to avoid catastrophe and retreat safely, and was captured by the British. He was released in a prisoner swap and promoted to Major General after taking part in Washington's crossing of the Delaware River. This house is where he was headquartered (along with future president James Monroe) during the Continental Army's disastrous winter encampment of 1777-1778. Unfortunately Lord Stirling's drinking and diet led to his death from gout in 1783, just months before the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolutionary War. Thanks for reading!

A shave I’ve been looking forward to on the calendar, until I realized the Leaf razor I bought for my wife for Christmas fits a scavenger hunt point I hadn’t earned yet and had to give it a try. It’s been a long time since I used a razor with a head that has multiple blades or any movement to it so it was pretty awkward. Didn’t cut myself or anything but I had no idea where to begin because it has a pretty chunky blade guard thing at the top. The long handle also made it pretty ungainly to shave my neck with. This was an experiment I won’t be repeating.

The smells were better, as I really like the light sweetness of Vanilla Sandalwood followed up with the drier sandalwood splash, and then topping it off with the coppery-metallic sandalwood of Radio Bombay, a favorite frag of mine.

I’ll update later when I have a chance to think over the potential winners…if I remember.

Congratulations everyone on completing the Lather Games! Like the marathon runners who shit themselves at the end of the race, I disgraced myself at the finish line by using a soap and a brush from the same country, and realizing this morning that I have three post shave products that aren’t from the United States but I used all three of them already. So since I am chasing 30 post shaves, I had to use something American. So my brush and soap are Italian, the blade was made in Russia, fragrance is French, and the razor is German, but Southern Witchcrafts is American like myself. Womp womp.

And the shave itself was terrible. I’m not familiar with the AyLM base at all, because this is a sample I bowl lathered it, which I am out of practice doing, and using the soap-hungry MOAR BOAR just ruined the poor lather. Too much water, not enough soap, just a drippy mess. What made it to my face had enough slickness to get through two passes but it was ugly.

At least I did get a nice balance of summer fruit scents, the banana and coconut from the soap intermingling nicely with the grapefruit splash, and then topped off with the oranges, bergamot and vetiver from Météore.

I’m proud of myself for completing my third Lather Games, and getting 30 different soaps, post-shaves, and frags for the first time. Maybe next year I’ll try getting 30 soap makers too. Big prayer hands emoji of thanks to the djudges for orchestrating all of this fun, and taking time from your real lives to make this happen for us all.
