Lather Games 2024 Day 1: Bonjour Lather Games!

Bonjour les rasiogoodfellas! J’adore les sandwichs et j’ai mangé un délicieux rosbif sur weck. Mais, passons au SOTD d’aujourd’hui!

Daily Challenge: New All The Things—Weck Hair Shaper

A very nice shave, if a bit unwieldy due to the slipperiness and possibly the light weight of the razor itself. Of the three styles of straight razors I have now tried, I might say the hair shaper has been the best. I think I want to try a Sextoblade next since the hair shaper felt a little small and light for my preference.

Use of Theme: AA Shaving – Wapiti

Thanks to u/OnionMiasma for sending me the smoosh of Wapiti and for being an all-around great guy. Brand new to me, I find the scent to be very nice, and I think a bit different than the usual woody scents I have tried. The base did well and gave ample slickness for the hair shaper blade to do its job.

Taking the woody theme from Wapiti, Eleven Cedar blends nicely as it soothes the skin and the nose with its warm, resinous accords. The fragrant finish of Mississippi Medicine rounds out the experience with a pungent green top note that softens to a smoky, sweet dry down that compliments the notes of Wapiti perfectly.

Have a great Lather Games, everyone!!

I had no sense of smell for the first week or two of the 2022 Lather Games. That…stunk…or didn’t, depending on how you look at it.

Lather Games 2024 Day 2: Ahoy Lather Games!

Use of Theme: Ahoy, Lather Games!

It’s an Old Spice-y day in the Hamptons, or the Cape, or maybe Sagaponack Pond…wherever u/Priusaurus is dropping anchor these days.

Leading off today’s shave, Hoffman’s Burn the Ships. It’s certainly not the best of the best and maybe relies on FOMO marketing tactics, but it is a respectable representation of Old Spice. Keeping the dream alive, the champion Barrister and Mann Spice aftershave, a noticeably lighter and powdery, but very faithful interpretation of the Spice. Finishing the trifecta is Old Spice Classic EdC. It’s Old Spice, it’s Classic. It’s as good as it can be, not having sniffed the Shelton in many years.

    Daily Challenge: Paleontology Day

    Priusaurus
    (To the tune: Clementine)

    Priusaurus, Priusaurus,
    Priusaurus what a guy
    He’s a true-blue, coastal e-lite
    Never made his lathers dry

Spends his summers in a sail boat
    Frittering in Buzzards Bay
    Using crystal like it’s plastic
    Munching on his Osetra-y

    Interrupted water polo
Tried his hand at Lather Games
Out of nowhere he’s the winner
His life’s never been the same

    In a dinghy leaking water
    Floating in the Vineyard Sound,
    Searching for a Smythe-y captain
Never more he will be found

    Judging lather, judging lather
Is where you’ll find him this fine day
Maybe if you’re on his good side
He will give you points today

Welcome to Lather Games 2024 Day 3

Use of Theme: Where’s the Beef?

My beef is usually on the smoker or on weck, or corned on rye, but today it ain’t in my soap. The West Coast Shaving Duck Fat Shave Soap rules the day and it’s a beautiful duck base from Vida at Chicago Grooming. The scent profile is a pleasant one for summer.

Carrying the oriental scent into post-shave comes Avon Tai Winds. From 1972, Tai Winds has a Brut-y take at the outset and is quite musky. I bought this decanter just for the novelty and nostalgia, as my mom was an Avon Lady when I was a kid and my dad used the various aftershaves before that. This is a pretty marvelous scent that you youngin’s might think is dated. Be that as it may, I really don’t give two shits. I made a decision to wear what I like.

The fragrant finish today is from Ted Lapidus. There are too many notes to compare, but my nose picks up on the spicy and woody notes that I detect in the soap and aftershave. A very delightful non-dickhole combination.

    Daily Challenge: OnionMiOsma

Did I thank u/OnionMiasma for being an all-around great guy? I think so, but let’s thank the wonderful people at Osma for creating their luxury alum. The only alum you’ll ever need. So I rubbed some mineral salt on my face today.

Have a great day and be kind to one another.

    Use of Theme: K.I.S.S.

It’s a Peppermint world in the summer. All your shaves should smell like peppermint and be as minty cool. There are many other scents that intrigue me from TSF, but I could easily stick with Peppermint Patti. It lives up to its label with an icy cool feel. The Epsilon Classic Mint is a fantastic mint scent and I am regretting not blind-buying a whole bottle. You will eventually be mine, big bottle. Fear not! To fragrantly finish, it only takes a quick shopping trip online to find a peppermint EdC. Demeter Junior Mints was pleasing in its delivery of the mint, but disappointing because the scent doesn’t last very long.

    Daily Challenge: Base Wars

Edit: Currently I seem to favor Omnibus.

I didn’t have a deep familiarity, but the Mickey Lee base was always good to me. In honor and remembrance, I present to you:

    • Fragrance: Zoologist Perfumes – Rhinoceros

Use of Theme: Canned Shave Goop

My original plan was to use my anniversary throwback can of Barbasol, but when the daily challenge means you could possibly waste that creamy Barbasol goodness, all bets are off. Gillette Foamy will do the job. It’s cheap and available at pharmacies everywhere. As is Skin Bracer, today’s post shave product of choice. Of all the “old” scents in my arsenal, this one is my least favorite, as nice as it is. Rounding of is Zoologist Rhinoceros, not because it is available in pharmacies–it isn’t, but because it would be interesting to see a Rhinoceros lather a cheap drugstore can of shaving goop.

    Daily Challenge: Reverse Lather

I go back and forth between bowl lathering and face lathering. I have knee lathered. At my age, I’m not flexible enough for foot lathering and I’m not pulling a muscle. So we’ll try this… Don’t you think that’s how a Rhinoceros would do it?

    Happy shaving!

    • Post Shave: Abbate y La Mantia – Don Jose
    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors – Saint Julep

    Use of Theme: Thirsty Thursday

After yesterday’s excitement, and after drawing the ire of Mrs_D for flinging lather all around the bathroom–apparently there was more that I missed than wiped up, I could sure use a drink.

We’ll start with a Piña Colada. If there were any benefit from being a nineteenth-century Puerto Rican pirate, it would certainly be getting to drink Piña Coladas all day long. And maybe getting caught in the rain, depending on who your first mate was.

I don’t know if Abbate or La Mantia had a drink in mind when they came up with Don José, but it works. Aside from smelling bit medicinal, maybe it’s the note of clove, it seems very drinkable. So, drink, we shall.

Let’s head south down the end of a dirt road to our favorite ramshackle juke joint, Saint Julep. I’ve never worn anything with Southern Magnolia, so that’s probably why it seems more feminine of a scent, but the mint and bourbon carry some weight to try and even things out. Three hours in and it is light and sweet smelling. Not offensive at all.

So, let’s have that drink. Straight from Beachbum Barry’s Potions of the Caribbean via the Cocktail Party app, here is:

    Crucian Banana Squash

    • 4 oz. Light Rum
    • 1 oz. fresh lime juice
    • 2 whole bananas, very ripe with brown spots on skin
    • 1 cup crushed ice.

    Step one:

Peel and slice bananas as thinly as you can, then place in a shallow bowl. Pour rum over banana slices. Cover bowl and let bananas soak in rum for four hours in your fridge.

    Step two:

After the 4 hours have elapsed, pour contents of bowl into a blender. Add lime juice and crushed ice. Blend until smooth, around 30 seconds. Pour unstrained into Old Fashioned glasses. Serves 2.

    Best consumed with a straw.

    Daily Challenge: WetTubing Appreciation Day

The first time is either the best or the worst, but this is far from my first. I still don’t think I can commit to being a wet tuber, no matter what u/VisceralWatch says. Nonetheless, here is my contribution to the Tubes today. I know you fuckers only have the attention span of a gnat and bail out after a minute. Judges, stay as long as you need to get what you want. There’s no punch line at the end.

Happy shaving and be kind to one another.

Use of Theme: Vetiver You Want

Last year I would’ve pulled the Dirtyver dickhole, but Mrs_D hated it, so Dirtyver and I parted ways last September. It turns out to be an amicable parting as Fresh Vetiver satisfies and scratches that itch. You know the saying, happy spouse, happy house. I called a last minute audible, having nearly mince-o-matic’d my face, and changed from Fine aftershave to Hoffman’s for some additional nourishment. It has a greener note than does the Fresh Vetiver and soothed my skin nicely. The fragrant finish of Mon Vetiver is an excellent compliment to the others providing some warmth and sweetness.

    Daily Challenge: GeoFatBoy Special

I take everything with a grain of salt, these days. And, unlike some people, am willing to seek what good there may be from what the aforementioned cast off in ignorance or hate. GeoFatBoy’s content is no different. If anything, I picked up tips on how to go about shaving with a straight razor. So that’s what I’m going with today for the challenge, a never-before-tried ATG pass with my Bengall 5/8. And today’s shave is one for the WetTube gag reel. Not that I had anything going for today’s video, but, right in the middle of shaving, Mrs_D knocks on the wall from the shower on the other side of the shave den and yells at me to bring her the towel she forgot. Half-shaved, I figured I would just sign off and call it done. Apparently I pushed the button to start recording and the rest is what we have today. The razor is great, the ensuing shave and video not so great.

Here’s to better shaves, and be kind to one another.

It’s no secret that Stirling was the first serious place I shopped online thanks to the algorithm. But I soon discovered Maggard, where all my stuff for today’s shave came from and probably where I’ve spent most of my shaving dollars. And, turning from bragging to the real reason this day exists, I owe it to Maggard’s for inspiration. Having never hosted a wet shavers meetup, the cancellation of the Maggard Meetup was the driving force behind the Ohio Wet Shavers Meetup, which will be happening for the fourth year come September 14. It’s one thing to lurk around with Internet randos, but it’s a totally different thing to actually get together in person just like we Gen Xers have always done.

    Daily Challenge: Mad Braggard

Alright, which one of you fuckers got an insider tip and placed this order with Maggard Razors just so you could swing your gonads around in the sub today? Was it u/Priusaurus? Perhaps, but there are better odds it was the one and only u/chronnoisseur420. How nice it was to dedicate his ~~National Donut Day~~ Vetiver day shave to my honor. How nicely he went about, feeding me lines while shoving that donut into his cake hole. You didn’t choke on it, but I hope it at least gave you a case of the shits.

As for my own orders from Maggard Razors, or anywhere else for that matter, I’ve never spent over $100 on a single order that I can even recall. Call it pragmatism on that end, I suppose, but I can’t and won’t go back into my order history and total up how much I’ve spent in five years, either. Just know it’s way more than Mrs_D knows (or admits to knowing) that I spent.

Have great shave and be kind to one another.

    • Lather: Eleven – Barbershop
    • Post Shave: Eleven – Barbershop

Use of Theme: Shave and a Haircut—Two Bits

Ahhh…the proverbial, and oft-questioned, due to the mysterious nature of it, Barbershop Scent Day.

Ordinarily, I would have gone with Catie’s Bubbles Tonsorial Parlor—named after the tonsorial parlor which, according to third-generation tonsorian C. Foy, who I assume has done his peer-reviewed research, is an inner sanctum where a man can receive the highest level of barbering services in a setting that compliments this ancient art. For those of you in Rio Linda, it’s like the champagne room at your local titty bar. You can go watch the titties, or you can go into the champagne room where they actually swing the titties directly in your face.

Instead, having to save the Bubs for Don’t Have a Cow Day, I’ll be going with Eleven . I’ve generally grown out of the “traditional” powdery barbershop scents. I still like them, but there are too many other scents to enjoy. The Eleven is nice for me as it relies less on the powdery notes than it does the other traditional barbershop notes. I haven’t had too much experience with Eleven aside from the samples I picked up at Maggard’s both last year and this year. Presumably, I received the new aloe and witch hazel base aftershave. It seems to do a decent job soothing my skin post shave. I still prefer the old fashioned alcohol base, no matter what anyone else says. If I need some additional soothing to counteract the drying of the alcohol, I have plenty of options. Brut gives us the fragrant finish today, its bergamot and sandalwood notes complementing the same notes in the soap and aftershave. Another “dated” fragrance to some of you youngin’s but, I wear what I like.

    Daily Challenge: Surprise Quiz

Let’s delve into the world of education, shall we? On any given school day in America, what are the last two words any average kid in any average school wants to hear when they sit down for another average class? “Pop quiz!”

We could sit and argue the benefits and detriments of pop quizzes ad nauseum. They are a looming reminder of the need to study and prepare while causing undo stress on those with learning difficulties. While we use the results to inform learning, their results may actually impede learning by encouraging cramming and poor study habits. Let us look into the more important issue, and the one most relevant here and now, the improper use of quizzes as a means of assessment.

What is the purpose of assessment? Simply put, it informs teaching and learning. What are the two types of assessment? The layperson would say tests and quizzes, and they are partially correct. While there may be more methods of assessment, the two types are formative and summative. The former are used to inform teaching and learning, the latter are used to evaluate the sum total of what has been achieved.

Djudges, what are you assessing? I posit that this is an improper use of a quiz, as there has been no prior announcement to let us know we should have knowledge of something to be assessed. Yes, it is a surprise—a pop quiz—but why assess us without first teaching us? It could be argued that scent counts insomuch as we already get assessed, and this is given up front in the rules, but if knowing the scent profiles is required beyond theme compliance we should receive fair warning. Some only use their noses to pair various fragrances without regard to the notes specifically enumerated unless specifically directed in the rules, e.g. the use of Lavender to meet a theme. This is, after all, the Lather Games and not the Scent Games.

Having said all this, should you present this same quiz again at the end of the games, stipulating that a higher score on the second administration will be the score you use for judging purposes, today’s quiz would be valid, in that it would be used to assess what I know and don’t know so you what needs to be taught so that I learn it and can be fairly assessed.

Alas, I will take your silly quiz and reveal my score to be 3/32 not argue any further as to the invalidity of a quiz administered by non-educators.

Have great shave and be kind to one another.

    Use of Theme: Happy Together

For today’s theme, I chose Declaration Grooming/ Chatillon Lux Gratiot League Square. It’s a warm, sweet, leathery, spicy scent that is supposed to be reminiscent of the trading square in 1800s St. Louis. I followed up with the matching aftershave, and I have always found the potion that Scott has concocted to be very nice and soothing without being too sticky. To fragrantly finish the shave this morning I chose Rose Santal from Chatillon Lux. We’ve all come to live the genius of Shawn Maher. I think it’s helpful when a perfumer works within a theme as he has in this case with historical St. Louis. He has woven commonalities between his various perfumes masterfully enough that they can easily pair. Here using rose and sandalwood, which are predominant notes also woven into Gratiot League Square. Having sat with it for about eight hours, I can say that the GLS is predominant through the dry down though when I first put on the EdP, the rose was very forward. As the day wore on the sandalwood seems to carry the weight. Alas, another reminder of the scents that I don’t have, but want.

    Daily Challenge: Song Day

Out of the thousands of songs that could possibly be in my head, I just figured I’d go with the first thing that came into my mind this morning when I woke up. For whatever reason that song happened to be Star by Earth Wind & Fire. I don’t know why. The B-side of the single was You and I. Quite appropriate, I suppose, for Happy Together, but we’ll run with Star.

Somebody said the song starts off on a somber note, but it’s really more thoughtful or hopeful. It does start off slow, but not somber. It does kick into a funky rhythm and happy tune that’s representative of how I want to feel most days.

Star bright, starlight, mighty light to see Shinin’, smilin’ down on you and me

There are a lot of things I tend to get cranky about and I’m not even a Boomer. I’m a Gen Xer, we’re not supposed to give a fuck. It’s a wonder we get mistaken. I genuinely don’t like being negative. It’s not who I ever was and it’s why I started signing off on my posts the way I have been—a reminder to be positive. Every so often I get an external reminder to stay positive.

I can feel the dark, take the night apart But then the stars come out to lift my heart

I think that’s just what I got today.

Happy shaving and be kind to one another.

    • Blade: Gillette Winner (5)
    • Lather: Pasteur Master Soap Creations – Bloom
    • Post Shave: Pasteur Master Soap Creations – Bloom
    • Fragrance: Nautica – Nautica Blue

    Use of Theme: April Showers

April Showers bring May flowers, the May flowers came and went. Soon the weeds took over my garden and now my back is bent.

Blooming is what the April showers cause, so it’s only natural to pluck the flower that is Pasteur Pharmacy and Master Soap Creations Bloom. There are plenty of fragrant floral notes signifying the blooming flowers of spring with just enough woody darkness to emote the showers of April to which we pay homage today. The matching aftershave is another artisan offering that is emollient rich without being too sticky. The scent carries well, but doesn’t overtly project. Fragrantly finishing today’s shave is Nautica Blue. The aquatic notes bring the moisture to the cool April air and shower our blooms with some additional floral and musky notes that brighten things up to remind us of fairer skies ahead.

    Daily Challenge: Color Coordinated

I’ve cut back on my SOTD photos of late, only because of time saving and lack of available space to shoot. Plus you all get tired, I’m sure, of seeing the same stuff. I managed to produce something spur-of-the-moment as I was setting up today’s shot. The photo may be a bit overcooked, but the video is definitely a nice byproduct.

Hope you have a nice shave and be kind to one another.

    • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co. – EMP

    Use of Theme: CREAM

What do toothpaste, perfume, and cigarettes have to do with CREAM day? Let’s get to that. Today’s themed product, Pacific Shaving Caffeinated Shave Cream, which is a decent product and better than the Cremo I used to use when I started this journey, smells just like toothpaste. Its menthol content gives the same toothpaste sensation. It’s slick while it’s on, but the post shave feel is quite lacking. Thankfully the matching after shave balm takes care of that somewhat.

In my first career position in news media one of my coworkers was quite well put together. Carrie had particularly nice teeth and I seem to recall that she kept a toothbrush in her purse along with a pack of menthol cigarettes. We worked on a team of about 15 people to produce 22 weekly community newspapers. Some nights we’d finish on deadline and go out to a bar after work. It was a great crew to work with.

It wasn’t until a few years ago that these memories were triggered with that first spray of Stirling EMP. It’s a more pineapple-forward version of Executive Man with a smoky undertone; reminiscent of someone who uses a spritz of perfume after having taken a cigarette break at work or 3 or 4 spritzes before going out to a bar with friends, just like Carrie used to do.

    Daily Challenge: Den Tour

Not much has changed from last year. I cleaned up the shelves a bit. There are a few new brushes. One thing I added was a 3D printed tray to keep some blades organized.

Have a happy day, a happy shave, and be kind to one another.

Lather Games 2024 Day 13: Dupelgänger Day.

    Use of Theme: Dupelgänger Day

Having heard the merits and magic of Prom King a couple years ago, it led me on a search to acquire the soap and aftershave for myself. Having tried a sample vial of Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male from the u/Scarpux Traveling Box of Samples, I can say that Prom King is a very nice dupe. Being 11 months removed, I wish my nose remembered it better. From the Prom King I get a hint of latex that starts off fairly sharp, but mellows out in the drydown. I presume there is a particular fragrance note at play.

Cuba Paris Cuba Gold is our fragrant finish today. I bought it partially because of the description of the scent, but more for the cigar-shaped bottle. It turns out that it smells similar to Le Male because it actually precedes it and has been said to be the inspiration for the JPG classic.

Daily Challenge: Draw a Soap Label

For Christmas, the Donut fam gave me tickets to see Styx and Foreigner on their Renegades and Jukebox Heroes tour and we saw them last night on the second stop of the tour. Ordinarily, I would just sit down and draw the label of whatever I am using but u/Engineered_Shave’s label combined with a minorly misfortunate event that transpired last night gave me the spur-of-the-moment idea which I present to you.

Happy shaving, and there were no injuries. The deer was already deceased and the damage to the underside of the car was minimal.

Edit: corrected tour name, edt name

We’re coming up on the half of a grueling month. I don’t think it gets less busy for a few more days and then the month ends as busy as it is now. But we shave on!

    Use of Theme: Frigid Friday

I’m jumping into the icy, limey sea this morning with Sea Ice Lime and a cold water shave. It might not be the coldest menthol soap out there, but it’s limey and that’s good enough for me. I was glad to get my hands on a set from the second run of this fine soap. I haven’t used the AL45 in awhile, so it was a bit harsh as I hurried through the shave. Thankfully, the cold water helped to tone things down a bit. Fragrantly finishing the morning shave is Clubman Lime Sec. It is definitely bright and juicy like a lime and complements the soap and aftershave nicely. My only complaint would be the cologne strength.

    Daily Challenge Stacking Day

It figures, that I’d choose a big, fat, plastic cologne bottle to have to stack. I have too much going on this morning to mess with it without incurring the wrath of Mrs_D. So, this is what you get today.

Have a great day and be kind to one another.

Use of Theme: Near Death Experience

My Stank Tank is nearly dead, and is the most nearly dead soap I have in my inventory. It is the old tallow formula and I may be lucky to still find some to replace it. I’d love to say that my bottle of aftershave is almost dead, but it is the magic 300mL non-exhausting, everlasting bottle. I can’t seem to deplete it no matter how much I use, and that is okay. Same for the EdC and I sprayed it on real good this morning. We’re in the country for Mrs_Donut’s annual family reunion and they will soon get to experience the glory that is Stank.

    Daily Challenge: Water Day

I lathered it on extra dry and pasty this morning. Probably my best shave yet.

Have a glorious day and be kind to one another.

    Use of Theme Father’s Day**

Here in the States we take this day to celebrate Fatherhood and how much we appreciate dads. Not the human equivalent of pollinators, buzzing and flitting about from flower to flower, but the honest-to-goodness dads who put in the time to raise their kids. They may not be the best, but they try. They may not have had their own dad present as a role model, but they persevere.

My dad will be 89 next month and I got my first scare at the Maggard Meetup in April with regard to what we all know is coming. The reminder that our lives are ultimately not in our hands. He officially had a TIA that day, received a subsequent cancer diagnosis, but thankfully any progressing dementia has been ruled out. He still has some fight left in him, but it’s been stressful for us in the midst of his decline.

I celebrate dads today with Williams Mug which, until its recent demise, has been creating lasting lathers since 1840. It’s been a punching bag of late, but I appreciated the honest evaluation that u/WegianWarrior gave it three years ago. Today’s aftershave is a favorite of years gone by, Avon Spicy in a “World’s Greatest Dad” trophy decanter it predates a few of us here, myself excluded. Some of you won’t have a clue. For being over 40 years old, the scent is still quite present, but likely won’t carry like it did back in the day. I’ve also paired it with another vintage Avon product from 1993 in cologne version for today’s fragrant finish. Musk for Men is a light, musky fragrance some say is Adidas Active Bodies with musk oil. I don’t know about that, but it is a suitable musk for the summer months.

    Daily Challenge: Leg Day

As if last year’s Never Skip Leg Day didn’t even matter. Nothing I can probably do to top last year’s 7.2K views of my epic short except a spite shave. This video is not for the faint of heart

Have a lovely day and be kind to one another. I don’t really hate all of you…just acting like I do.) 😁

Use of Theme: Don’t Have a Cow, Man!

I was always using Catie’s Bubbles for today’s shave and am happy that they are today’s sponsor. My first choice was Tonsorial Parlor since I think it has become my favorite barbershop scent and I have the matching aftershave to go with it. However, in light of today’s daily challenge, I called an audible, pulling out Porch Drinks instead. In certain parts of the country, drinking on the porch goes hand-in-hand with playing music. Porch drinks also smelled pretty good when coupled with Tonsorial Parlour, so that was a nice surprise. Fragrantly finishing our little porch jam is Azzaro Pour Homme which actually has a Cardamom note in common with Porch Drinks. I’m quite certain there would also be plenty of moss on the oak trees surrounding our little cabin in the woods.

    Daily Challenge: Knee Lather

I come from Forked River with a lather on my knee.

Jr_Donut’s banjo makes an encore performance in this year’s knee lathering daily challenge. Just know that I’m sparing you all the grueling 10 minutes of lathering.

Happy picking, happy shaving, and be kind to one another.

Use of Theme: RIP in Pieces

Today’s soap is Mickey Lee Soapworks, to whom I paid tribute in my day four epic story, The Devil of the Saponic Seas. The base continues to be very good, yet it would have been exciting to see how it would have progressed with the others. I have to admit it was my own temperance that kept me from having more of it when it was readily available to me, as it was one of the handful of artisan products available at my local proprietor of shave wares and now home of the Ohio Wet Shavers Meetup—River’s Edge Cutlery. I did, however, acquire a tub of Sandalwood preshave butter, which I hardly use these days. That tub of Pantie Dropper always looked me squarely in the eye every time I visited. Mickey Lee soap finally made it into my trial rotation just as they were announcing their closure. I was lucky to get my tub and bottle of C di A before the primary market dried up. Colonia di Agrumi is an inspiration reminiscent of Aqua di Parma Colonia, a classic Italian scent that is bright, citrusy, and spring-like. It very much compliments today’s fragrant finish, Stirling Campania, which should come as no surprise. Campania is an homage to Fico di Amalfi, another scent from Acqua di Parma.

    Daily Challenge: Wicked Edge

Say what you want about the other shaving sub. Having been a mod there for just over two years now, I’ve done my share of post removing and throwing ban hammers at idiots. Happily I have not had to throw any at my r/Wetshaving homies. Though some of you do irk me at times, just not on w_e. And I don’t really blame you. It’s just human nature to be spiteful and hypocritical. I’m just as guilty some times.

In the spirit of levity and good natured ribbing, here is my Wicked Edge post:

I’ve been a member of Wicked Edge for about two years, learning all I can about wet shaving. Despite trying numerous methods, I still haven’t found a solution, so I’m documenting my experience to outline my issues and seek advice.

I started shaving with a Gillette Sixtyblade when I was young, I decided to try a straight razor (Henson AL13), inspired by videos showing effortless shaves. However, I quickly realized that genetics play a significant role. For me, shaving with the grain doesn’t remove hair effectively, so I have to go against the grain, which results in severe irritation, burns, and bumps, so I went back to the new Gillette Eightyblade Electric Lab Superazor.

I want to return to wet shaving. I’ve been told that my flat-growing, thick beard and very sensitive skin will always make it impossible to wet shave my whole life, but I don’t want to give up.

Here are some pictures of the mess my acne-ridden, razor-bumpy, ingrown-infested, folliculitis face has become after trying everything people have told me to do. Can you help me?

Now, I will be the first to agree that society in general has forgotten what it is to laugh at ourselves. That’s why we have the fun we have here. But here’s to hoping you can find a source of humility and decency to be kind to one another. That is, treat others as you want to be treated.

    ❤️🍩

    June 19, 2024 – Lather Games 2024 Day 19: ~~RIP Lather Games~~ Juneteenth

    • Brush: My bare hands
    • Razor: Timeless Aluminum
    • Blade: Personna Lab Blue
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Lime
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Lime

    Amended Post

Today was a day I’m not proud of and I am willing to admit it. I’ve taken to putting the “Golden Rule” tagline at the end of my posts and I didn’t follow my own advice this morning and acted in an uncivil manner.

Am I a hypocrite? Yep. But I admit it and I’m sorry that I am.

Here is the post I had in my heart to do today (striking out some stuff as a reminder of what I did say and bolding my amended comments) and the shave I did do since Mrs_Donut and I went out this evening and she likes it when I clean up and smell nice.

    Use of Theme: Juneteenth

I’ll admit to being prejudiced when I was younger, but I’ve since learned and experience life. One thing I learned was that my direct ancestors fought in both the American Revolution and for the Union Army in the Civil War. While there likely is not much physical evidence of the former, I have touched the ground they fought on and have seen their names on monuments at Gettysburg. To ignore the importance of what they did goes against why we recognize today—the right of freedom and equality. Yet I am “othered” for my beliefs.

I suppose it would’t be right to continue this post, but that would not be in the spirit of camraderie that we foster with our hobby and the Lather Games. In that spirit, I will continue.

The now-home state of Barrister and Mann was also home of New York's 20th, 26th, and 31st regiments of the United States Colored Troops in which over 4,000 black men served. There are several notable members including the 26th Infantry’s Noah Elliott who would become the first black doctor in Athens, Ohio. But I digress…

I rubbed some made-in-the-abolitionist-state-of-New York Barrister & Mann Lime on my face with my bare hands. How could I use a brush? ~~China enslaves its people.~~ Still, do they not deserve to earn a living by making shaving products that we buy?

~~I rinsed the soap off my face with my bare hands. How could I keep it on? I don’t know where all the ingredients are sourced?~~

How could I choose even a razor made in my own abolitionist state? I can’t possibly know where those raw materials were sourced. Yet I chose the Timeless Aluminum made in North Royalton. Ohio by the Timura brothers, two of whom I have met personally and they are stand-up folks.

How could I choose a razor blade made in the United States? I don’t know where those raw materials are sourced, either. Yet 21st century Americans produced those blades with pride.

I followed up with a splash of Lime aftershave which is a close second to Seaforth! Sea Spice Lime as my favorite lime scent. Keeping with the Barrister and Mann theme, the fragrant finish comes from Eclipse, which turns out to be a nice complement to the lime despite the two having no notes in common.

    Daily Challenge: Meme Day

I had a whole album to meme Bacconchop and his desire to buy a Declaration Grooming brush, but I’m leaving that behind as long as we are all still shackled by incivility and hypocrisy. Technically, I still posted a meme for the challenge.

So, I had a lousy start to the day. I’ll probably have other lousy days (I hope you all will forgive me when I do.) but I will try to remain civil.

Please be kind to one another. Please remind me when I’m not.

    Use of Theme: Sunny Days

It’s all about having fun outdoors today. First we head to South Padre Island, where it’s anything but fun while they feel the effects of Alberto. The Stirling version is very reminiscent of days at the beach where we slathered on the SPF 15 if we were even concerned. We didn’t go to many beaches, living in landlocked in east-central Ohio, so we mostly headed to the swimming pools. And there, cannonballs were the thing along with whatever dives we could come up with. Though I could never manage to get that extra half-rotation, I did perfect a single-flip cannonball one summer. Summer Break Soaps has perfected their own Cannonball, and the aftershave is a cold delight on a hot day like today. Rounding off the shave is the fragrant Paris Hilton. Not the person. A guy can dream, can’t he? Paris Hilton for Men is a light, yet projecting fragrance that gives a very outdoorsy finish to today’s shave. Sometimes my nose picks up citrus from it despite not having those notes present, but it does have a mango note and that’s fine by me.

    Daily Challenge: u/Old_Hiker Day

By now, shaving outside is old hat. A few years ago, I might have taken a hike for a shave, but that will happen sometime down the line. Hopefully from the top of Pikes Peak. For now you’ll have to settle for my back yard. Enjoy the sounds of the birds as they sing happily while I shave from between their trees.

Have a great day and be kind to one another.

Last year we shaved with haikus,
But the Djudges say now they’re old news. Though haikus are fun,
    I’d write more than one,
Some limericks will have to do.

    Chorus
    Ay-yi-yi-yi,
    The Lather Games are silly.
    So, sing me another verse
That’s worse than the other verse
And waltz me around by my willy.

    Use of Theme: Fougère Friday

Ahh, the fresh smell of green ferns,
For the countryside this shaver yearns.
    But avoid “leaves of three,”
    And happy you’ll be,
Or the itch’ll be so fierce it burns.

There once was a man named Sri,
A soap maker he wanted to be.
    The Kaw it is Wholly,
    With lots of neroli,
And instead of one fat it has three.

A delightful post shave I hath,
    From a picturesque Scottish strath.
    I smell freshly scrubbed,
    Right out of the tub,
Like a ‘ristocrat after his bath.

Beau De Jour EdP by Tom Ford,
It has to win an award.
    I purchased a sample,
    The vial t’wasn’t ample,
But a big bottle I’d never afford.

    Use of Theme: Spooky Saturday

I’m up early on a Saturday morning to get some pork on the smoker and today’s choice of software will help things along. The sweet, smoky goodness of Autumn Ash will remind me of cooler days to come, colorful leaves, lovely maple things, and camp fires. If I didn’t already have my rub planned, I would’ve slathered my meat in maple syrup and wrapped it in bacon. I’ll queue that one for the next smoke. The glory of Autumn Ash will have to do until then. It’s a Trickhole of that goodness today, because the glory is so glorious.

    Daily Challenge: Carve a ~~pumpkin~~

What’s more spooky than carving a pumpkin at midnight? Sadly, there are no pumpkins in the Donut household until October, so I carved this instead. Consider it a harbinger.

Have a spooky shave and be kind to one another.

June 23, 2024 – The Great Lather Games 2024 Sweet Sunday Shave in the Kitchen Caper

    • Lather: Chiseled Face – Banana

    Use of Theme: Sweet Sunday

It’s all about my favorite shitfluencer, wet shaver, and all-around great guy, u/J33pGuy13. A year ago, or maybe two, he sent me a nice Oumo badger knot out of the goodness of his heart. I frosted it with beauty salon lightener to gel the tips and it turned out really well. But he’s really shitfluenced me to the banana side of life, so for the gourmand theme I’m pulling out all the bananas today.

I couldn’t use SW Boonana in order to meet all the point obligations, but I was fortunate to have grabbed a sample of Chiseled Face Banana. My aftershave choice is the result of an oversight as I used my original choice—Don José—earlier this month. Thanks to Amazon Prime, a bottle of banana essential oil bit my doorstep. Add some Everclear, some household botanicals and I concocted my own Impressive Donut branded banana aftershave. The fragrance finish comes from Radical Works Bananq Perfume with its greener banana notes. All-in-all a very banana-y shave.

    Daily Challenge: Kitchen Day

I woke up in the morning and stumbled to the kitchen, poured myself a cup of ambition, yawned and stretched and tried to have my annual gourmand-y shave for fake Internet points. And something was amiss. Dishes that I left in the sink were on the counter. A banana peel was left haphazardly on the counter next to an empty can of Banana Bread Beer. More importantly, the shaving gear I stashed in the cupboard was gone. Fortunately I could still oblige the Djudges and shave in the kitchen as I had a backup of my software for just such an occasion.

Stay tuned as I unravel the mystery…

    Edit

    Has the mystery been solved?

Did someone claiming to be u/J33pGuy13 purportedly sneak into my kitchen to cause harmless mischief and satisfy his curiosity?

    • Blade: Personna Lab Blue (3)
    • Lather: Noble Otter – Tis the Season
    • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. – Christmas Eve
    • Fragrance: Amouage – Fate Man

Use of Theme: Christmas in July, but in June’s Eve

Why is it Christmas in July as opposed to Christmas in June? Before we tackle this burning question, we should first thank fellow shaving degen u/Schontzm for his contribution to today’s shave. As he has in the past, he graciously sent me the smoosh I needed to meet the theme today—Noble Otter ‘Tis the Season. Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year and the good smells are many. At this juncture of life, the fruity, berry accords combined with the green pine really do it for me. Tis the Season might possibly the perfect Christmas scent for me, having tried sample offerings from other artisans. However, this may call for a 12 Christmas Soaps evaluation very soon. If anyone has a burning desire to contribute, start sending Christmas themed soaps my way!

A very apt paring of aftershave is Stirling Christmas Eve as it shares the pine and fir notes but goes a more spicy direction than fruity. The scent is very Christmas-y without being a solitary pine fragrance. Lucky for me it was still in stock at Maggard and I’m glad to have another Christmas-themed product to fill a void in my arsenal.

Fragrantly finishing today’s shave is the non-Christmas, but very complimentary, Fate Man fragrance from Amouage. Particular notes from the perfumer’s palate that seem to tie things together are ginger, Manarin orange, incense, and cedar–all Christmas-y scents to me.

Let us return to the question at hand. June would seem more logical as it is half-way to December. A Quora user posits that June is only the beginning of summer, and technically not summer, as the solstice falls closer to the end of the month, thereby making sense to celebrate it in the middle of summer as we yearn for the colder days of December and the holiday. But, still, why?

Modern thought leans toward the commercialization of the holiday as retailers race to the next season in an effort to boost their bottom lines, though Black Friday is historically the day in which the retail industry begins to actualize profits for the fiscal year. Though the connection of retail business and the Christmas holiday is linked, it turns out that in 1933 the first physical celebration of Christmas in July happened in Brevard, North Carolina where Keystone Camp held a two-day event complete with “fake snow, presents, carolers, and a Christmas Tree,” according to a 2022 report by North Dakota CBS affiliate KX News.

It’s unarguable that we’ve taken to having a “second Christmas” though wouldn’t it be, chronologically, the first as it occurs before December? Regardless, it’s a nice reason to wear some different scents in the summer just for fake Internet points.

Daily Challenge: r/Wetshaving exclusives wish list

I’ll admit, one of the alluring facets about our sub after I first became active was the sub exclusive. Talk about pumping the FOMO and fake status. Imagine being able to have something unique only to us, and it is exciting. With everything available to us these days, we are certainly not at a loss for products. That said, should something come into being that was truly worth acquiring, I would jump on the chance. Particularly if it would come from Stirling Soap Company, who, as I understand, has always wanted to do a sub exclusive. So, there. My wish list is complete.

Have a great rest of your Monday and be kind to one another.

I’d rather it be Christmas in December as I’m now, for the second day in a row, dealing with an idiot-in-charge who refuses to acknowledge context and will not accept that he is wrong for accusing me of being a liar and a subversive. Aside from that he is apparently feeling threatened by someone below him (moi) who takes initiative and, thereby, operates “outside the system.” I tried to deal with it properly, but it is time to climb up the ladder, which means the idiot is now a squatter invading the residence of my brain. I’m tired, boss.

It’s Santa Ben day and a day for Mammoth Santa❌ Noir Trickhole. As has been said earlier, it’s undeniably Christmas themed if it has a Santa Hat. It is a welcome departure from the traditional Christmas-y scents of winter berries, evergreen trees, and snow. Yet it retains an air of evergreen sophistication for the fancy office parties and get-togethers around the holiday.

Daily Challenge: Shave in a Hat Before I shave in a hat, I have to lather up. Bonus material I don’t know if I can make this a tradition with another album cover, but thank you Herb Alpert for another inspiration this year!

    • Lather: Djonut’s Djelicatessen – Mornay Sauce
    • Post Shave: Hartzler’s Family Dairy – Whole Milk
    • Fragrance: Radical Works – Bacon Solid Cologne

Ahhh…it’s the annual day where half the sub awakes, posts a placeholder, and goes back to bed feeling good about themselves long before the sun ever rises on the Eastern seaboard. This year it looks like some of the less adventurous actually shaved, leaving the late risers in a frenzy as they keyword searched the thread to find out if another user sniped them, leaving them without their daily lather point.

    Use of Theme: Wildcard Wednesday

Welcome to the third edition of what began from a friendly conversation with u/djunjilla about deli sandwiches, particularly the Reuben—ranked only number 14 by Far & Wide in their list of Most Popular Sandwiches in America, Ranked, but arguably the best by his and my standards—Impressive Djonut’s Djelicatessen

Year one was all about the iconic Reuben, which gets a lot of love in the Midwest yet is likely snubbed because of the sauerkraut.

Not wanting to waste the opportunity to meme a good comment, the Beef on Weck became the featured sandwich for year two and the subsequent opening shave of this year’s Lather Games.

If you were lucky enough to be having out on Discord the day I inadvertently tipped my hat, this will be no surprise. I set out to evaluate the list of popular deli sandwiches and came upon this Kentucky favorite, the Hot Brown.

Created the 1920s by Chef Fred Schmidt of the Brown Hotel in Louisville as a new temptation for late-night revelers of the hotel’s famed nightly dinner dances, the sandwich has gained world-wide appeal. These days, everyone and their brother’s cousin has a version of the famed sandwich, but before we go to the source for today’s recipe, The Brown Hotel, here are a few obligatory words about the shave theme.

Milk. It does a body good. Sri uses lots of it in Wholly Kaw soaps. My Mornay sauce lather is butter (another good ingredient), milk, and cream. More milk is good, so Hartzler’s Family Dairy Whole Milk is a nourishing aftershave lotion that does a face good. What can make this shave even better? That which makes anything better—bacon. Fragrantly finishing this fine shave is Bacon Solid Cologne from Radical Works.

The Chopstick Kamisori makes its return in a new V.2.5 #rainbow configuration with a comfort wrapped handle.

BONUS UPDATE! Making today’s sandwich!THE WORLD-FAMOUS HOT BROWN

    INGREDIENTS Makes Two Hot Browns

    • 2 oz. Whole Butter
    • 2 oz. All Purpose Flour
    • 8 oz. Heavy Cream
    • 8 oz. Whole Milk
    • ½ Cup of Pecorino Romano Cheese (Plus 1 Tablespoon for Garnish)
    • Pinch of Ground Nutmeg
    • Salt and Pepper
    • 14 oz. Sliced Roasted Turkey Breast, Slice Thick
    • 4 Slices of Texas Toast (Crust Trimmed)
    • 4 Slices of Crispy Bacon
    • 2 Roma Tomatoes, Sliced in Half
    • Parmesan Cheese
    • Paprika
    • Parsley

In a two‑quart saucepan, melt butter and slowly whisk in flour until combined and forms a thick paste (roux). Continue to cook roux for two minutes over medium‑low heat, stirring frequently. Whisk heavy cream and whole milk into the roux and cook over medium heat until the cream begins to simmer, about 2‑3 minutes. Remove sauce from heat and slowly whisk in Pecorino Romano cheese until the Mornay sauce is smooth. Add nutmeg, salt and pepper to taste.

For each Hot Brown, place two slices of toast with the crusts cut off in an oven safe dish – one slice is cut in half corner to corner to make two triangles and the other slice is left in a square shape – then cover with 7 ounces of turkey. Take the two halves of Roma tomato and two toast points and set them alongside the base of the turkey and toast. Next, pour one half of the Mornay sauce to completely cover the dish. Sprinkle with additional Pecorino Romano cheese. Place the entire dish under a broiler until cheese begins to brown and bubble. Remove from broiler, cross two pieces of crispy bacon on top, sprinkle with paprika and parsley, and serve immediately.

    Daily Challenge: Clean Brush Talk

Every so often I’ll clean a brush with some Zingari Brush Cleaner. Mrs_D and Lil’_Donette have since taken to using it to clean their makeup brushes to great success. But let me tell you about how not to clean a brush that you have used to slather Russian Dressing all over your face.

I pretty much thought the Opus Brushworks Glow Dot brush I used for for the inaugural Djelicatessen shave was ruined, but I liked the handle, so I wanted to at least try to rescue it. I thought a deep clean with white vinegar might do the trick, so I pretty much submerged the knot for a while and forgot about it. It must have gotten bumped while on the counter and I don’t know what, but a spot on the handle that was now in the vinegar became bleached of color. The knot still smells like rancid oil and has a sticky feel to it. I haven’t used it until today and it turns out that letting your dogs lick the Mornay sauce out of it doesn’t work so well, either. So, kids, don’t use your nice shaving brushes to mess around in the kitchen!

    Use of Theme: Information Overload

Our soap of choice today, Chicago Grooming’s sub exclusive AG 1889 is inspired by Guerlain Jicky and was the brainchild of u/Ythin and u/wallygator88. Meeting Information Overload criteria of at least 10 notes, AG 1889 lists 22 and are Lemon, Mandarin, Bergamot, Lavender, Rosemary, Basil, Bay, Orris, Jasmine, Patchouli, Rose, Vetiver, Cinnamon, Leather, Amber, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Civet, Tonka Bean, Incense, Benzoin, and Rosewood. I would list a ghost note of Ammonia, as it is the first thing I notice off the tub, however, it dissipates quickly upon lathering and is not present in the aftershave. Speaking of aftershave, I really felt the burn today no thanks to my little shaving helper’s handiwork behind the razor. Hopefully, the vast amount of skin-nourishing ingredients it contains will help after my near-death bleed-out in my bathroom. To fragrantly finish this morning’s blood-letting session I chose the real deal—Guerlain Jicky in a tiny sample vial. As there is more than one version, the current listing from Fragrantica shows 16 distinct notes of Rosemary, Bergamot, Lemon, Mandarin Orange, Lavender, Tonka Bean, Orris Root, Basil, Jasmine, Vanilla, Leather, Spices, Benzoin, Sandalwood, Amber, and Brazilian Rosewood.

Our little shaving buddy Sapo makes an appearance today to seek out another new adventure in our shaving journey. For the record, Sapo is right-hand dominant, so he uses his non-dominant, left hand to shave. He has a temper, though he managed to keep it in check and even showed a new side of himself this morning. Even my mettle was tested in what would have normally been a panic situation for the average shaver. Some scenes may be disturbing, viewer discretion is advised.

It’s Friday and we’re using all the cheap stuff!

    Use of Theme: Frugal Friday

    Daily Challenge: Frugal Friday

Lather: Arko – Shave Stick ($0.024/g)

Say what you want, derogatory or otherwise, about Arko Shave Sticks. It’s my first time using one and I’m not unsatisfied with it. Again, Arko users get a lot of chuckles and ribbing, but if that’s all I had to use, there’s nothing wrong with it. Does it smell a little funny? Yes, but that’s what aftershave and fragrance is for, to cover that shit up.

Assured for Men TTO Safety Razor ($0.038/g)

When am I gonna learn my lesson and throw these things in the trash? As long as they are in my house, I have to use one of them. Not a one of my cheap razors is any cheaper than the Dollar(Twenty-Five) Tree Assured Razors that I keep around. Why didn’t I stop at one? The first one, a TTO I’m pretty sure I bought before the 25% jack in price, broke into pieces before I could even ~~self flagellate~~ shave with it, so I bought another one. (One must take care to use that word, flagellate, as we all know autocorrect would probably change it to fellate, though self-fellation and self-flagellation are certainly mutually and arguably metaphorical for what we actually do around here.) The others I bought to test the mettle of ~~suckers~~ ~~unwary blood donors~~ volunteers in a few contests we held at previous Ohio Wet Shavers Meetups. Now having figured out the secret—an extremely light touch—I could use this razor if someone pointed a gun to my head every morning.

Omega 50068 Bambino White Handle ($8.50)

I always defaulted to my cheap-ass Perfecto brush for today as it felt cheaper than its $16.98 price tag. I’ve since acquired some Omega brushes that feel decidedly better than their cheap price tags. Te cheapest brush is now my Omega Bambino that, when I get fully broken in, should be a fine brush to take traveling as well as use any time. I think the Omega brushes could represent the gold standard for frugality. Go get some!

Gillette Wilkinson Sword (Saloon Pack) ($0.07)

These could be a blade I’d use every day, and I ordered many for just that. They are now in my Top Five and are the least expensive per blade that I probably have. The aren’t the sharpest, but they always give me a consistent shave. Just what you want when you are a ~~tightass cheapskate~~ frugal shaver.

Assured for Men – Original Scent ($0.01/mL)

Let’s talk about covering that shit up. Assured for Men ain’t gonna do it. It is certainly aftershave, has alcohol and some fragrance in it, but that’s about it. Not covering up much. Let’s try to be cheap and exciting with our fragrance.

Parfums Belcam – Black Classic Match – EdT ($0.11/mL)

It says it smells just like Polo Black, and I’m sure it does. Cheap and exciting, right? Well, there’s a reason it doesn’t say “projects just like…” or “lasts as long as…” ‘cause it’s cheap. Spray it on at the end of your fancy-schmancy date night and it’ll last for about three minutes, and that’s probably about the right amount of time.

Have a great rest of your day and be kind to one another.

    Use of Theme: Sandalwood Saturday

Several years ago the Donut family went to the Maple Syrup Festival at Malabar Farm State Park. Aside from seeing demonstrations on how maple syrup has been made throughout the years, we ate breakfast and listened to live bluegrass music in the Pugh Cabin. If you are a film history buff like I tend to be, you’ll appreciate that the Pugh Cabin and grounds were used in filming of the opening sequence of The Shawshank Redemption. All you see in the opening of the film is right there and almost the entire movie was filmed in nearby Mansfield. Pretty cool. So cool that when I had the opportunity to purchase a shaving brush handle made from the famous Shawshank tree, I jumped on it. I haven’t set a knot in it for fear of doing something rash, like using it for the Lather Games. So it sits on my shelf.

I do have a wood handled brush, though poor it may be, the Perfecto will have to do the job of representing the wood half of the theme. The other half is a strappy little number from Mrs_Donut’s side of the closet. We put the two together and we have Sandalwood Saturday!

Oh, it helps that we are using Zingari Man The Traditionalist. It has Sandalwood right on the label. Proraso (Red) Aftershave also is sandalwood scented. Our Fragrance, Blazing Saddles, though it smells more like a cowboy’s chaps after a long, hot, August trail ride, does have some sandalwood in it to round things out.

If it were up to some, we would venture out of our caves, club a lizard over the head, cook it for breakfast, rendering the fat in the process, and turn that fat into soap with the lye from water we passed through the ashes of yesterday’s fire. And we’d shave with the sharpened rib bone of that thing we chased out of our cave and killed last week. That is, if we have the time. The assholes from the two caves over keep coming over and trying to steal our stuff and rape our women.

But no. We’re all global-like, and we swing our clubs around in more sophisticated pursuits and go to great lengths to display our exotic shaving wares. And looky here, my soap is from Italy and my aftershave is from Germany and I don’t like it. And why should I have to use a Bangladeshi blade in my Indian razor when a perfectly good lizard bone works just fine? And how can I be expected to use a Chinese brush made of plastic? A proper Chinese brush should be made of Chinese Badger Hair and I don’t like it. Not one bit. And look at this Frenchy perfume that says Black. Who wants to be like real French boys prancing around in their berets and waving their white flags? I won’t have it.

    INTERMISSION

As a certain dead composer once said, “Oh, blimey, how time flies!” And so it has with the month of shaving in the 10th Lather Games.

Five years ago I poked around in the sub and stumbled across the remnants of this Lather Games thing and thought, “What a bunch of weirdos!” But I obviously tucked that thought into the forefront of my mind and dove headlong into the 2021 Games. So much so, that people thought I was an alt, trying to stir things up. Turns out I was just fed up with the world at the time and needed healthy dose of fun, and that’s exactly what I had. I had zero expectations of anything else, certainly not finishing in third place the following year. I just put in the effort to entertain myself and my fellow latherites.

The Games seem to get bigger each year and with the level of excitement and enthusiasm you all brought last year, I was not expecting another third place finish. I am fortunate to have some spare time in the summers to give to our shenanigans. This year I had less, so I set my expectations accordingly, after I initially planned to not play this year. Then fake oddsmakers who equate themselves with the big dogs in Vegas laid odds on me as the favorite to unseat u/Priusaurus in his bid to repeat as champion. Well, I had to pick up that gauntlet and here we are.

I put in more effort than I thought I could. You all brought yet another level of enthusiasm. I’m the fake, odds-on-favorite to win. Am I gonna stand on a soapbox and cry to the djudges about how I should win? Hell no!!

Instead, I extend my humble and sincere thanks to you for your efforts to run this great event despite having figurative and pseudonymic (It’s a word. I looked it up.) mud thrown at you in some sort of strange shaving harikari. Yours is a thankless job and you all deserve a salary increase. In fact I thought a certain muddy person was offering to finance your salaries next year, but alas, I am mistaken.

As for the rest of you. Thank you for playing along in the spirit of camaraderie and fun. It’s always a pleasure to be in good company even if we have our differences in opinions.

In lathery good spirit, have a great shave in happiness, and be kind to one another.

Edit: I live in the USA.
