Well, this is my first Austere August and my first ever shaving challenge (started wet shaving in September 2023 and skipped the Lather Games this year because I wanted to allow /u/bacconchop a fighting chance at ROTY).

Normally, I don't think I would take part in a challenge like Austere August, partially because I don't normally shave every day, and partially because I don't like the idea of restricting myself... But, the Great Wall of Badger was breached earlier this summer when I let a Wald A1 synthetic into the den, so I decided I needed a boar, and /u/geekyoldrob is a literal crack dealer and won't stop dropping fire and I keep coming back for more, so I had a few handles that were gonna need knots. I purchased a 28mm shoat (boar) knot from Milton at Turn-N-Shave (along with his excellent ~~off the shelf~~ Chinese hand-tied Tip V8 also in 28mm for another Chizzly & Hizzly handle I had ordered.

Here is an album containing pictures of the new Shoat boar knot in its shipping material, the empty handle, the unused knot set in the handle, as well as the packing slip, knot, and shipping material. I've also included a picture of the knot after the first use today as to show the difference between from it's unused state in my SOTD photo. Tagging /u/EldrormR for the first and only time to enter Raw Hoggin'.

Further, /u/archsoup1 generously let me borrow his rather newly received Le Maurice 1.4 earlier this summer and I fell in love with it after putting it through a little over a week's worth of use in different shaving scenarios, so I ordered one. It is my Swiss Army razor, good in every situation for me. It is probably the most comfortable razor I have used over almost the last year of wet shaving, and I've put a rather lengthy list of razors though my den in that time. The razor in premium polished 316L stainless is a sight to behold and the finish is on par with that of Wolfman's mirror polish, and James set the bar. This razor quite literally arrived today at 2:55pm. Much like the Americans arrived in France at the last minute, this razor returned the favor. Sadly, I found that when I opened the box, I had misunderstood the configuration options, so the handle is not exactly what I had in mind, but that will be fixed.

I decided that Austere August was the perfect time to accomplish three things: * Kill some soap (I have too much) * See just how many shaves I can put on each edge of a Wizamet (I usually toss them after 10-12 shaves, but not really out of necessity) * Further refine my technique to see if I can achieve daily BBS for a month straight (if I start getting irritation, I'll drop to WTG and XTG, and if I need to, drop to two WTG passes)

I figure getting to the point where I can comfortably shave daily and get the results I want will also help me kill more soap, so Austere August here we come!

    Austere August Day 2

    • Prep: Hot shower
    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Government Issue with 28mm Turn-N-Shave Shoat (Boar)
    • Razor: Atelier Durdan Le Maurice 1.4 (SS Premium Polish)
    • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (Edge 1 - 2nd shave)
    • Lather: Gentleman's Nod Mushashi Soap
    • Post Shave: Cold shower, Gentleman's Nod Musashi Splash

Day 2, here we go. I feel like the brush is breaking-in pretty well, and it feels like the tips were noticably softer by the time I was lathering for the second pass than they were lathering for the first time yesterday.

Here is an album that I am going to continue uploading to throughout the month to show progress of the brush. I saw others were progress tracking soap weights, so I decided to weigh my tub today pre and post-shave, and I went from 180.6g to 169.1g, which seems crazy... 11.5 grams! I don't feel like I loaded crazy heavy, since I did a two pass WTG and ATG shave, and when I squeezed the brush out there was barely any lather left in the knot.

The Le Maurice continues to shine. I truly love this razor. It think it may be my outright favorite of the razors that I own and have owned. I was able to achieve a 2-pass BBS result this evening, after the same yesterday and that is not something I can comfortably do with many razors. Even with the razors I've been able to accomplish this with, I usually can't keep it going for 3 or more days. My face feels totally fine, without signs of irritation, so I'm hopeful I can make it through a 5-day stretch of 2-pass BBS shaves (that would be a work week test for me).

    Austere August Day 3

    • Prep: Hot shower

    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Government Issue with 28mm Turn-N-Shave Shoat (Boar)

    • Razor: Atelier Durdan Le Maurice 1.4 (SS Premium Polish)

    • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (Edge 1 - 3rd shave)

    • Lather: Gentleman's Nod Mushashi Soap

    • Post Shave: Cold shower, Gentleman's Nod Musashi Splash

Day 3, and another smooth, comfortable 2-pass WTG / ATG shave with BBS finish from the Le Maurice. My skin still feels great. I'm actually getting some great lathers from the GN C4 base. This stuff is better than I remember it being when I first bought it. Today's lather consistency was perfect. The brush feels slightly better than yesterday, but not as noticeable of a difference as between Day 1 and Day 2. The knot fell out while I was shaking out the brush post-shave, so I had to re-glue it in... hopefully it stays put this time.

Here is an album that I am going to continue uploading to throughout the month to show progress of the brush. I weighed the tub again pre and post-shave today and found that, pre-shave, a gram of water had evaporated since the post-shave weigh-in yesterday. Went from 168.1g to 159.6... a difference of 8.5g, down 3g from yesterday's 11.5g difference.

    Austere August goals below...

I decided that Austere August was the perfect time to accomplish three things:

Gonna move the Discord tag to see if Discord LatherTwot picks up my post this time.

    Austere August Day 4

    • Prep: Hot shower
    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Government Issue with 28mm Turn-N-Shave Shoat (Boar)
    • Razor: Atelier Durdan Le Maurice 1.4 (SS Premium Polish)
    • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (Edge 1 - 4th shave)
    • Lather: Gentleman's Nod Mushashi Soap
    • Post Shave: Cold shower, Gentleman's Nod Musashi Splash
    • Tags: $UltraNightmareMode $RawHoggin

Day 4: I spent the day in the high country and got home later than anticipated and ended up rushing this shave, which resulted in a few weepers and some irritation, but that's my fault. Hopefully tomorrow's shave is better. I'm moving into unchartered territory for me: 4 straight days of 2-pass WTG / ATG shaves. I'm going to do one more shave like that tomorrow, and then simulate a "weekend shave" with two days of WTG / XTG to give my face a break.

Here is an album that I am going to continue uploading to throughout the month to show progress of the brush. I weighed the tub again post-shave today and it was 148.7g, a different from yesterdays's post-shave of 10.9g... hungry brush is hungry

    Austere August Day 5

    • Prep: Hot shower
    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Government Issue with 28mm Turn-N-Shave Shoat (Boar)
    • Razor: Atelier Durdan Le Maurice 1.4 (SS Premium Polish)
    • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (Edge 1 - 5th shave)
    • Lather: Gentleman's Nod Mushashi Soap
    • Post Shave: Cold shower, Gentleman's Nod Musashi Splash
    • Tags: $UltraNightmareMode $RawHoggin

Day 5: Coming off yesterday's rushed shave, I slowed today's down. I reopened a few of yesterday's weepers, but didn't do any new damage and certainly less irritation post-shave than yesterday. That's 5 straight days of 2-pass WTG / ATG shaves, which I've never been able to do comfortably before and, despite the last two shaves not being great, they were far better than any other attempt I've made at consecutive shaves iwth an ATG pass. Time to switch to WTG / XTG for the next few days to let the skin recover a bit.

Here is an album that I am going to continue uploading to throughout the month to show progress of the brush. I weighed the tub again post-shave today and it was 137.4, a difference from yesterdays's post-shave of 11.3g... I'm not sure this tub will make it to the end of the month...

    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Government Issue with 28mm Turn-N-Shave Shoat (Boar)
    • Razor: Atelier Durdan Le Maurice 1.4 (SS Premium Polish)
    • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (Edge 1 - 6th shave)
    • Lather: Gentleman's Nod Mushashi Soap
    • Post Shave: Cold shower, Gentleman's Nod Musashi Splash

Day 6: Switched to WTG / XTG to let the skin recover a bit. Today I did a couple of weigh-ins to see how much soap I was losing to the tub rinshing after a shave. Post-shave (after rinse) yesterday was 137.4g and post-shave (before rinse) was 134.1g. After rinsing today, it weighed in at 130.6g. I lost more soap to rinsing than I used in the shave. Today was the lightest I've loaded all month, and I struggled to build an adequate lather for the second pass; I thought about going back to the tub for a few swirls, but didn't.

Day 7: Continued with WTG / XTG to let the skin recover a bit. Today I did another couple of weigh-ins to add more data to how much soap I was losing to the tub rinsing after a shave. Post-shave (after rinse) yesterday was 130.6g and post-shave today (before rinse) was 127g. After rinsing today, it weighed in at 124.5g. I lost more soap to rinsing than I used in the shave. Today was an even lighter initial load than yesterday and I had to go back to the tub briefly to build adequate lather for the second pass.

Here is an album that I am going to continue uploading to throughout the month to show progress of the brush. I weighed the tub again post-shave today and it was 137.4, a difference from yesterdays's post-shave of 11.3g... I'm not sure this tub will make it to the end of the month...

    Austere August Day 8

    • Prep: Hot shower
    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Government Issue with 28mm Turn-N-Shave Shoat (Boar)
    • Razor: Atelier Durdan Le Maurice 1.4 (SS Premium Polish)
    • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (Edge 1 - 8th shave)

    • Post Shave: Cold shower, Gentleman's Nod Musashi Splash

Day 8: Continued with WTG / XTG. Skin is feeling better. Today I did more weigh-ins because wtf else is there to do when you can only shave with one setup? Post-shave (after rinse) yesterday was 124.5g. Pre-shave weigh-in (24h drying time with lid off) was 123.5g (this is the second time I have measured this, and the second time I've seen a loss of one gram due to water evaporation). Post-shave (pre-rinse) weight was 120.4g, so 3.1g used for the shave (I had to go back to the tub twice during the lather for the second pass). Post-shave (post-rinse) weight was 119.4g, so only 1g lost to the rinse, however today I decided to try a cold water rinse instead of warm. It took about twice as long to rinse the protolather out of the tub, but only lost 1g instead of +/-3g.

Here is an album that I am going to continue uploading to throughout the month to show progress of the brush.

Day 10: Continued with WTG / XTG. Found the bottom of the tub, which is a first for me. I don't think I would have seen a tub bottom for 3 years if I hadn't done AA. Granted, tonight required digging deep to motivate myself to push through the boredom and monotony. Thrill has been killed.
