It's good to be back, and with a new Lather Games, a New All The Things kickoff. First of all a couple of shoutouts to those that made this possible, u/enndeegee sent me a Durham Duplex completely unsolicited out of the kindness of his heart. The gesture was amazing, the shave itself was.... sub-par. It came with a proprietary hair shaper blade which I've never seen before, and it was... rough. It will be tough to find a new razor for next year as I think this was the last one on my bucket list.

Also the first time using a horse brush, and I must say, I really enjoyed it, it has decent backbone with some scritch, somewhere between a badger and a boar. Will definitely keep it in the rotation post LG.

And most importantly, onto the lather. Shoutout to u/infernalinternal for also sending me some unsolicited smushes out of the kindness of his heart. I haven't used APR before, and the scent was quite nice, sweet with notes of fruit to my nose. I was so sad to hear about what happened to the maker. The purpose of new things day is to expose us to new brands, and unfortunately this one is permanently unobtanium. I'm glad I got to try it and I wish everyone else good luck for the duration of the games in our month-long thunderdome style shaving competition.

    Ahoy Mateys,

One thing I learned last year is the judges prefer out of the box and the unobvious option. Yes Bay Rum or Old Spice could've been the easy option, like picking Cella on almond day, but today was a perfect excuse to use arguably my absolute favorite warm-month scent; SEAforth SEA SPICE Lime. "Waves crashing over the deck" in Spearhead's own words, just oozes nautical vibes. With the Lime right on top of everything to prevent Scurvy. Any chance to use this trifecta set is a good day, and I will be jumping head-first off of the gangplank into this wonderful scent.

I have u/Priusaurus on record as saying "I really like it" regarding a Blackland razor, unfortunately I didn't have one on my calendar for today, so what I do is this, I go click, click, click and move everything around. And voila, in his honor, I am shaving with a titanium Blackland Vector today, which is highly resistant to corrosion, making it a great option for shaving at sea.

May yer anchors be ever tight!

Another shout out to u/infernalinternal for the unsolicited Hampshire Wool Fat, it's a super nice soap. The fragrance in it is very subtle, I'd describe it as a Stirling Sheep without the funk. I'm a big fan of Mitchell's Wool Fat already, so this was right up my alley, just with a more unique scent. Since today's theme is a question (i.e. Where's the Beef?) I thought it fitting to counteract the non beef tallow by answering the question with beef tallow balm. It was in my bathroom, so I found it.

But before the balm, came the Osma, which I own, but pretty much never use. I enjoy the feeling while applying it, but it is damn near impossible to wash off, which was the case today.

I haven't counted how many shaves are on this Fromm blade, probably \~5, but it's a crazy smooth blade, probably my new favorite hair shaper blade, I'll have to revisit a Kismet in the future.

I'm seeing many other interesting tallows, and definitely want to check out bear and duck in the future!

Single scent, one word; almond. There's something so nice about this scent from Cella, it smells just like a fresh almond croissant to me. And it's very clean. It's a perfect scent for when decision paralysis kicks in and I can't decide which soap to use. It's very universal and simultaneously innocuous. Cella is an absolute den staple.

Also huge shoutout to u/EldrormR for supplying today's hardware. The MM24 is one of my absolute favorite razors, and he does incredible work, so much that he made this absolutely incredible brush. I wanted a 24mm unbleached Zenith boar knot in it, but unfortunately Zenith doesn't or wouldn't sell a loose knot. Not a problem for a man with desire and a hammer, who completely knocked it out of the park.

As for discontinued soap bases, I'm still relatively new, so haven't gotten a chance to use many, if any of the unobtanium bases. But as far as the current ones, I absolutely love Stirling and Spearhead bases. They can take a ton of water to make the slickest glide I've been able to get. Not to discount any of the other artisan bases, as they all work well for me, it's like comparing a Ferrari to a Formula 1 car, I love them all!

I think it's been about 20 years since I actually used a shaving cream. I used a gel a handful of times as I never shaved, and if I did want to shape up, I'd clean up with a cartridge after a shower with no product. I bought a travel gel a couple of years ago, and only used it once; on canned goop day last year. I threw it under the sink, with anticipation of using it for the same day this year. I wanted to change things up and wanted to go with the old school canned goop staple; Barbasol. I bought this value size (with 50% more free) at my local CVS, because they didn't have the smaller size, which I wish they did, as this thing is massive and I have almost no space. It will continue to sit under my sink until this time next year, and every year thereafter until the can inevitably ceases to generate canned goop.

Staying on theme, I used a disposable Gillette which was also purchased at CVS as well as the ubiquitous Thayer's Witch Hazel.

I was debating what I would do for my reverse lather routine, as I typically use the Michael Freedberg method of bowl loading NOT bowl lathering; i.e. scooping into a bowl, loading, and building the lather on face. I thought the opposite would be somehow loading on my face, and lathering in the bowl. Fortunately this challenge fell on canned goop day and I didn't have to attempt that. The only constant is I always use a brush, well today I use my hands, which is the scientific opposite of a brush. It was messy, and sub par, but following the LG rules and guidelines for themes and challenges ALWAYS comes first.

Most lathers today will be inspired by beverages today, this lather actually HAS real beverage in it; real brewed coffee. Over a billion people drink it every day. And this scent from Wet the Face is incredible; it has actual grounds in it, and smells exactly like whole beans in the grocery store. It does give a bit of burn, but worth it for the great scent.

Whipping it up with a mixed brush and scraping it off is a Rolls razor honed by the master u/whosgotthepudding to throwback the timelessness of coffee this morning.

I originally started down the rabbit hole after googling how to lather Proraso, and stumbled across a GeoFatBoy video. He's the OG for sure, but his more recent videos have felt much more salesy. Ken Surfs is another classic, I enjoy his content for the Bond memorabilia. u/VisceralWatch gets to use the best items I'm interested in, but he doesn't make enough content, which is of course totally understandable as he does it for fun, but please, give the people what they want!

"Scent Notes: vetiver, patchouli, rose, tobacco, genuine leather, clove"

"The base notes of vetiver and patchouli beckon you, the natural and bohemian movements of the time guide you through the hazy entrance."

This is what Razor Emporium has to say about 1977. It's definitely vetiver forward. I grabbed this smush from a passaround of the two Rex slants. It's definitely a timey scent that lives up to it's namesake. I rounded out the shave with some other timey items; Floid and Dior, although their eras predate the Rex, they are certainly classic scented.

The GeoFatBoy special challenge feels more like a day off than a challenge. I do 3 passes daily, and honestly, if I didn't enjoy this hobby, the single pass against the grain makes more sense efficiency wise. I can see how it might be more problematic if you went several days with only the one pass. But with a single day of growth, the stubble is already so short its comparable to already having done a WTG and XTG pass. Anyway, super easy solo ATG pass this morning.

Maggard; synonymous with a great selection and even better customer service. Last year I used Convergence which admittedly wasn't my favorite scent, it reminded me of those brown paper towels from high school bathrooms. I placed an order during the most recent black friday sale, and threw in a sample of Maggard's Barbershop in anticipation of today, and the scent blow me away. It's so fresh and clean. To stay on theme today, EVERYTHING used in today's shave was either bought from Maggard, or available for sale at Maggard.

Looking through all of my orders at Maggard last year (there were NINE), I'm kind of surprised at how much I bought, and how many of the items actually remained in my possession. My order experience with Maggard will always be skewed as I usually go to Pasteur's and buy in person, and that should say a lot as I still made nine orders in a year. Most of my orders from Maggard seem reasonable, two of them however, don't. On one order, I wanted to buy a Valet Autostrop, and I needed those proprietary Feather's that the Oneblade uses. I placed an order for a single pack of blades; the shipping cost more than half of the price of the blades. I didn't even have the Valet yet. Less than two months later, I placed an order for 4 HoM samples. Again the shipping was more than half of the price. But both orders were shipped within an hour of me placing the order. And no other company (that I know of) offers such a wide variety of samples. Truly great customer service, and I don't mind paying money to such a great business.

Today is one of in not my favorite theme day, it gives me the only chance this month to use my favorite scent; Stirling Barbershop. If you haven't tried it yet, you're only cheating yourself. It fresh, clean, and sweet. It really invokes that feeling of walking out of a barbershop after a fresh haircut when you just feel on top of the world. Amazing scent.

Pop Quiz Score; 5/32 Pretty tough without Latherbot giving out the fill in the blanks. Even after getting the answers, I probably only could've gotten 1 or 2 more. Good quiz, will certainly separate the wheat from the chaff

Denton Majik for Pasteur's (as seen on the label) was an on the spot buy. I whiffed it and had to grab it, it's a really nice "blue" scent. When I was researching it now to write my description, I discovered it's based off of Creed Erolfa which I haven't smelled before, but I'd think it would be great. I love the sizes of Denton Majik's products. I'd much rather have the half sizes so tub kills can actually happen.

"Warmed by a gentle sea breeze, wild, delicate flowers sit dotted amongst freshly cut grass painting a picture of spring meadows coated in frosty morning dew."

Green Irish Tweed and Spring are synonymous. You can't think of one without thinking of the other. It's also got the cool factor being worn by Pierce Brosnan and Cary Grant. I've tried a small handful of clones/dupes, and I found Irish Countryside to be my favorite out of the lot. It hits everything just right, I can't say which is objectively the closest, but this on from RazoRock is certainly my favorite. I did some Googling for the best GIT frag, and Tres Nuit from Armaf was the most recommended. To my nose, it sits somewhere between Cool Water and GIT, but for 25 bucks, it can't be beat.

    Color Coordinated

I admittedly know nothing about photography, but I tried to capture the greens and blues against a green and blue background. Big thanks to u/SaintBandicoot for the touch up and and tips. (I asked for help after I had already taken the photos)

Dupe day; keeping it simple and concise for the judges, Cowboy Up is a dupe of Tom Ford's Ombré Leather. I was able to smell them side by side, and it's legitimately identical. The frag is the best frag I've ever used longevity wise, it sticks to clothes until you do laundry. Trying to add to the theme, I used a Hoffritz slant which is a "dupe" of the Merkur 37C. It's a stretch to call it a dupe, but fortunately the guidelines only apply to the lather.

I have drawn a soap label of today's soap here. This was created using a combination of pencils, highlighters, and a Sharpie.

I then had an epiphany after.

Near Death Experience Day, and my tub closest to a kill is HC&C James Bond. It's also the tub that I've possessed the longest. It a really nice fragrance, but a bit too much for daily wear. Definitely a going out type of scent. At the rate I'm going, it should be finished sometime next year.

I had my first use with the RFB today, and my initial impressions are.... inconclusive. Probably because today's dry/pasty/thin lather looked like THIS. I normally take the time to make a nice, wet, thick and drippy lather, so I went with the opposite today. It was pretty bad, but .2 points is .2 points.

For Father's Day, not only is the lather company I'm using older than me, but every item in today's shave is older than me (80's baby for clarity)

First, the lather; Cyril R. Salter was founded in 1949. And the scent is incredible, it's super peaty. I haven't tried Mike's Vetiver, but it's the best Vetiver I've whiffed.

The razor and blade; both Gillette which was founded in 1901.

Simpson was founded in London in 1919.

Myrsol was founded in Barcelona in the early 1940's. An odd time to found an aftershave company given the geopolitical events at the time.

And finally, Floris, the oldest company in my sotd, which was founded in 1730.

Happy Father's Day to all, and good luck to those scraping lather off their legs today!

It's fitting that Catie's Bubbles is the Sponsor Spotlight today, as I used Catie's Bubbles. It's a vegan base (as I'm sure the judges know) with a great base and an even better scent. I wasn't allowed sugary cereals as a kid, so Fruit Loops were always the forbidden fruit (didn't intend the pun but it happened.) I get that hankering for a bowl anytime I whiff this soap. And the cooling in the splash is a great touch for this nationwide heatwave. Wanting to stay even more on theme, I went with a synthetic knot, and I guess for that matter a vegan razor, as I didn't use a straight with horn scales or anything like that.

I loaded and lathered completely on my knee, but Imgur doesn't want to upload videos, so here are some pics and a couple of screenshots from the clip

Hi guys I tried to make a post for this, but the mod wouldn't let me. Why can't we submit full posts instead of having to use these stupid daily threads. Anyways, Williams Mug Soap was cheap, but now that it's unobtanium, I will sell the puck after I'm done with it to the highest bidder (with minimum pubes, not none, but still a lil). I'm thinking something like 60 bucks idk lol. I used a straight razor but idk if its working right, it shaved up my strop, I thought you could use a strop a long time, not just one time. Idk is it sharper than a Feather? The brush and razor are also from companies out of bizness.

Is alot of blood alot? I used Asmo block but it stings. Here's a pic of me after. Can anyone help me out? Im young and poor and just started shaving. Can somebody PIF me a Dec Brush and a Wolf-Man rayzor?? Like please Im so poor. Im thinking of going on dark web and selling my kidneys for a good razor, or minecraft dollars, or Im gonna steal monies, idk, tbd lol. n e way, bye every1!

For today's Juneteenth shave, not only is my House of Mammoth lather from a Union state, but almost every item today is.

The Rubberset company was in Newark, New Jersey

Gillette was famously located in Boston, MA

House of Mammoth is New York (and shipped out of Illinois?) which was also a Union state

Ogallala is based in Nebraska, and although Nebraska didn't achieve statehood until 1867, Nebraska was a Union territory whose residents fought for the Union Army

There is only one American made blade to my knowledge; Personna. It felt like it would have been irresponsible to use them today as they were a Confederate state. So I picked a Gillette blade, while not made in Boston, it was made in Russia. Russia was the only country that openly supported the Union.

That concludes today's history lesson. Here is your meme.

Shout out to u/EldrormR for today's soap. Dec's Sweet Lemon, described as "an accord that is citrusy and creamy", it definitely gives off summer vibes, especially with the notes of coconut, which I associate with a pina colada on a hot summer day. Trying to match the scent as close as I can with some Catie's Bubbles Saturday Morning which has citrusy notes from the lemon and lime froot loops (despite apparently all froot loops being the same flavor) Thanks to u/Environmental-Gap380 for this info.

I missed out on Day 1's daily challenge due to a technicality, so I am making sure to follow today's stipulations TO A T. Webster's dictionary, defines "nearby" as "close at hand". Making sure to follow these rules as stated "Being outside for this challenge is defined as having no more than 1 nearby wall". To honor u/Old_Hiker I shaved outside by making sure that no more than one wall was in arm's reach, or close AT HAND. It was impossible for me to touch 3/4 of the walls without moving, making it not close at hand. It was almost an indoor shave, but per the rules, this is an outdoor shave. The weather was much nicer than I expected, and I thank you for forcing me outside of my comfort zone for today's shave and god bless :)

No other scent/fragrance/smell/vegetable/fruit is more associated with Spooky Season/Autumn/Halloween than Pumpkin. Is a pumpkin a fruit or a vegetable? Well a cursory Google search confirms it is in fact a fruit.

Stirling's Pumpkin Spice is amazing, it's a super cinnamony/nutmeggy pumpkin scent. I def get burn from it (probably the cinnamon) but it's definitely worth it for the scent alone. The aftershave smells much more apple like to my nose. I finished up the shave with some Samhain, which is of course Halloween/Pumpkin themed.

The hardware used was my "scariest" looking razor, and my most orange-adjacent (butterscotch) brush.

Here is my Halloween carving. I tried to make a jack-o-lantern, but it was trickier with a DE due to the width of the blade. If I were to do it again, Id use something narrower like an Artist Club. Anyway, I lit a paper towel inside on fire because I don't have any tea candles on hand, but considering what I had at my disposal and not being able to leave my apartment due to Covid, I'm really happy with how it came out!

Nothing more sugary, sweet, and desserty than a donut, and this is Talent Soap Factory's take on it. It's such a nice scent, not overpowering at all, but more like a barbershop scent that's innocuous enough to wear on a daily basis. It has a slight sour cream-esque tang that really makes this soap stand out. The splash is even better. And it was of course whipped up with the gourmand candy; butterscotch.

    Here is my kitchen shave

Kitchen day isn't as much of a challenge as it is a privilege; I have way more counter space, the hot water comes out fast, and if I do a 180, I have a full length mirror. It also brings me closer to the air conditioner. Win Win Win

The razor I had been looking for like a year for, I finally found one across the pond on a forum, and the owner said he'd just send it to me. I insisted I return the favor and asked what he needed, and sent him some Personna Reds. It was only after he said he'd give it to me that I offered to send him something. There was no quid pro quo. The RK blades were thrown in that Rex slant passaround. GBY whoever threw those in the box.

Celebrating Christmas in July, in June, with Cooper & French's Santa's Workshop. Santa is the face of Christmas (it feels unnecessary to try and justify this soap, but better safe than sorry.) This is one of my all time favorite scents, the sweet tobacco leaf really pierce through. I wish they made a splash as well, but the balm on this 90 degree day will have to do.

The only hat options I had on hand are beanies or fitteds, and a beanie is just way too hot to shave in, so here is my favorite hat. Was shaving in a hat silly? Yes. Is ignoring conventional norms of shaving for daily challenge points also necessary? Also yes.

Apparently I wasn't the only one with the idea to shave at this ungodly hour (props /u/bmac92 and /u/Priusaurus )

Looks like we all got the memo

I admittedly screwed up my calendar, and today was the only day left to get B&M in, so I had to put my original plans away for next year. Now Djudges, please remember the stipulations of today's challenge call for being the FIRST to use a specific lather, not who uses the WEIRDEST substitute. I have thereby satisfied the requirements of today's challenge, and in the spirit of the challenge, I have also been the first to use each item that is in my shave from razor, blade, brush, and aftershave (taking the games seriously, so probably max points here)

I'm sure the Djudges will be tired of reading the monotonous descriptions of our brush cleaning routines. Mine will be no different, but it will be one of the first, so whoever is Djudging this, hopefully won't be too jaded yet. After I complete my last pass, I lather onto my face and then squeeze out what's left in the brush. I then rinse out the brush under the tape while lathering the bristles in my palm until the water runs clear. I then give the brush 4-5 hard shakes to remove the excess water. And finally I paint the bristles on a towel for \~15 seconds, and then hang the brush to dry. This concludes my brush cleaning routine and binarily satisfies today's daily challenge.

    Frugal Friday is one of my favorite theme days. It's fun going through the inventory in the ole den and doing some quick maths. That said, here is my cheapest loadout;

Brush; The brush, although I received it for free, was/is being sold as NOS on eBay for $7.46. The markup percentage wise is actually quite high, considering this brush was made for the Soviet army in the mid-late 80's and probably cost literal kopeks to make and was issued for free. Not only is it the cheapest brush I own, it is also the worst. It's crazy scratchy and if you have some spare time, you could probably sit down and count the individual boar hairs as there are so few.

Razor; I thought I'd end up using some vintage Gillette adjusted for inflation today, but somehow, this "modern" Russian army razor is still cheaper. These were being sold brand new just a few years ago for $10. It uses 2 DE blades, one of which is snapped in half, and is crazy mild. It also is a hybrid guard, with a safety bar on one side, and open comb on the other. It's such a pain to get the blades to seat properly, but the novelty of this razor makes it a keeper.

Blade; This one is the most difficult to quantify as there is no MSRP and finding consistent pricing is tricky. I checked multiple sites and settles on Razor Blades Club's pricing since they have the most variety and thus the most consistent pricing. It narrowed me down to 3 different blades that are 29 cents a piece. After doing some more Googling, I found a 100 pack of Treet Carbons for $7.98, making these 8 cents a piece!

Soap; This will be the most popular option today, not because LG competitors are unoriginal, rather we are satisfying today's theme as expertly as possible. An Arko stick is $2.99, or 4 cents a gram; you simply can't beat that.

Aftershave; This was the most surprising. After finding the prices for all of my splashes, the Floid Genuine was the cheapest by cost per oz. A 400ml bottle sells for $38, making it 9.5 cents per oz.

    To acquire every item in today's shave, the total cost excluding taxes and shipping is $66.43, but of course on a price per gram/oz/blade, the shave is even cheaper. I will try to quantify this below;

The brush and razor can last a long time if cared for properly, if you get over 1000 shaves with the razor, and 746 with the brush, they will each be 1 cent per use.

The blade we'll say an average of 3 total uses, so 2.67 cents per use, but this razor takes two, so it's 5.33 cents

The soap and splash are the trickiest to quantify, so here it goes. From a cursory Google search, an Arko stick lasts about 3.5 months of shaving daily; roughly 105 shaves, making it 3 cents a shave. Assuming 2ml of aftershave is used, this bottle of Floid will last 200 shaves, making it 19 cents per shave.

That makes the cost of today's individual shave 29 cents.

I will reluctantly satisfy today's challenge. I don't like to encourage cheating, but the Djudges have been working overtime this month, so as nod to them, I will make an exception this one time (until next year I'm sure when this daily challenge returns)

u/Priusaurus is bringing a strong case for back to back champion. Getting his wife to drive him while he shaves his legs in the car speaks almost more to the strength of his marriage, than his commitment to the Lather Games.

u/Enndeegee is my favorite non-scrub, and if I were a Djudge, I would just give him the title.

u/whosgotthepudding straight up opened a barbershop, which is some serious commitment. Can you get tax breaks for a "home office" now?

u/MrTangerinesky I don't even know what to say, he always brings it, in fact, I picked him as the winner for this daily challenge last year.
