This cream smells nothing like sandals or wood, but I guess I probably smells like sandalwood. The AoS cream was my first foray into wetshaving \~8 years ago. Looking back, I've come a long way in my shaving journey (I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing though). I don't know if my technique has improved or if the cream has gotten better with age, but I was able to get a really nice lather out of it.

Without knowing any scores, I think u/Priusaurus is a strong contender for overall LG winner. The time and effort that must go into his interviews really shows in creating great, engaging, entertaining posts. For FoF, my money is on last year's overall winner, u/RedMosquitoMM. His writing is fantastic, and I think he does an excellent job of describing fragrances and how they pair. I'd put u/chronnoisseur42O as my Photo Contest frontrunner, with yesterday's Lavendursday photo being one of his best.

Shaver General to the tune of The Major General's Song by Gilbert and Sullivan

    Lyrics:

I am the very model of a modern Shaver-General

Of soaps, both vegetable and tallow, I have several

I know the soapers of England, and I quote the shaves historical

From Marathon to Dickhole, in order categorical

I'm very well acquainted, too, with shavers who’re fanatical

I understand the razors, both budget and aristocratical

About wet shaving I am teeming with a lot o' news

Cheerfully all of the wetshaving posts I must peruse

Cheerfully all the wetshaving posts he must peruse!
Cheerfully all the wetshaving posts he must peruse!
Cheerfully all the wetshaving posts he must peru-peruse!

I'm very good at both shaving and soap lathering

On wetshaving I’m certainly not just blathering

In short, in soaps both unobtanium or plentiful

I am the very model of a modern Shaver-General

    • Razor: Charcoal Goods - Everyday #CNC
    • Blade: Wizamet - Super Iridium
    • Lather: Sir Henry - Sandalwood
    • Post Shave: Sir Henry – Sandalwood AS

I don't see Sir Henry so that much, certainly in the UK, but it's very nice and their Sandalwood is actually my favourite, followed by Kentucky Rain. Nice easy lather, lovely scent and non-alcoholic splash which obviously makes it a lot easy to acquire!

For the challenge of the day, my favourite general reads have been /u/Priusaurus ' interviews, sometimes informative, sometimes amusing but always a good read. /u/Crisp_Mango deserves an honourable mention, everyday coming up with new lyrics deserves a shout out, very inventive.

FOF I'm genuinely not sure, not being able to understand it myself, I would always struggle to know whether what someone is saying is on the nose or a load of rubbish.

Best picture, this is truly challenging. There have been so many good ones over the course of the event. I think for myself it would be a toss up between /u/gcgallant for Almond day, another by gcgallant on day 25 and finally /u/chronnoisseur420 for day 11, I think this one just wins out for me, the lime background with the water splashes just really caught my eye.

The best post, I'm not sure I should call it that as it's closer to stomach turning, would be /u/hugbckt and Day 18 and going the extra mile for the daily challenge, absolutely grim but shows absolute dedication to the cause.

It's been an entertaining run, and I'm hoping myself and my gear arrive at tomorrow's destination in one piece and I have access to WiFi for my final shave tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a grand day.

    Cheers

    Marc

Lather Games Day 29 - I Got Yer Sandalwood

    • Brush: Semogue 610
    • Razor: GEM Pushbutton
    • Blade: Gem PTFE (5)
    • Lather: Proraso - Sandalwood Soap
    • Post Shave: Southern Witchcrafts - Sandalwood splash

Today is another day that Big Soap is going to take over the Lather Games. Today is the day that the djudges should get down on their knees and beg like they've never begged before for Proraso to become one of the sponsors of the Lather Games. I mean is there any point in using any other sandalwood scented shaving product other than Proraso today? Sure, I could have used the Southern Witchcrafts Sandalwood soap I have that matches the splash used today, but that's bullshit. I'm pretty sure Southern Witchcrafts stopped making their version when Proraso sent them a cease and desist letter. I'm willing to bet B&M got a cease and desist letter as well. Go find their version of Sandalwood flooding the market. It's practically unobtanium thanks to Big Soap. So many artisans think they can band together on a day like today and knock Big Soap off its pedestal as the sandalwood king. So many artisans' hopes and dreams will be crushed today.

On to today's challenge to give our djudges a day of rest from thinking about who has been worthy in this year's LG. I do have to say that u/priusaurus definitely brought his A-game with the ice baths, the getting kicked out of restaurants for shaving and other hijinks. I have to give a shout out to my fellow Pine Tree Stater u/hugbckt for doing (or maybe not doing) the unthinkable and enjoying a nice glass of stubbly lather water. u/mrtangerinesky and his attempt to shave in a headstand before falling and slashing himself is definitely taking one for the team. u/chronnoisseur420 and his creation of the most dangerous shaving instrument ever is worthy. u/crisp_mango wins song of the year for his brilliant remake/remix of the Humpty Dance to kick off the LG. Of course, you have to give credit to u/jeffm54321 and his commitment to keeping the Air Bud Rule from going extinct with his usage of Bay Rum this year.

Sandalwood Saturday and the penultimate day of the Games, July has flown by at a rate of knots.

Each time I use Sandalwood I kick myself for not getting on board with it sooner, I have had some great Sandalwoods and moved them on like an idiot Santal Noir and Les Santals to name a few and boy I regret it. I’m guessing my nose wasn’t refined enough when I was sniffing these great scents but now I can’t get enough of them.

The Traditionalist is great a pure smooth creamy Sandalwood and the vegan base from Zingari is one of the best in my book. I topped it off with the now discontinued Zara S4ND4LWOOD, I believe it’s based on Le Labo Santal 33. It’s a nice creamy scent that stays close to your skin and is just a nice warm hug of a scent perfect for a Lazy weekend at home.

I still have loads of days to read fully so I can’t really make a good prediction, I will say that u/Priusaurus has had a great games. Although not a competition in its own right two people always make me smile when they comment on my posts and that u/jeffm54321 the man is dryer than an arid desert and u/enndeegee for his daily commitment to his TLC Tribute List.

    July 29, 2023 – Woody saturday

    • Brush: Holzleute – Silvertip badger
    • Razor: Custom designed Böker with bog oak scale and french head
    • Lather: Captain’s Choice – Sandalwood
    • Post Shave: Spearhead – Black Watch
    • Fragrance: Boss – Bottled

    #FOF

I decided to match evrything I could with the wood and or sandalwood theme. The brush has a wooden handle and translates to “woodpeople”. My Böker is the only razor with a wood scale (leaving out the new Koraat).

    Soap:
In my first maggards order, I got a A&E soap with sandalwood and oud. The soap back then had a creamy sweet sandalwood. That’s why this soap confused me a bit and reminded me of u/djundjila djunior snot Proraso red cream. Captains choice is almost medicinical. When lathered, the wood aspect gets more prominent, but also a more balsamic, almost mediteranean vibe. Did not know that sandalwood can be that different. The lather was…. if the lather would be a ship, I would be a landlubber.
There were more visible bubbles than in caties bubbles stock. Once on the face, the lather collapsed. I did not have huge expectations about the soap, but this was really underwhelming.

    Shave:
I enjoyed the razor like no day before. It went as smooth over my skin as the soap allowed it. All in all, i got good shave out of it, but at no moment was I confident about what I was doing. While that beautiful shaped metal scratched off hair, making sounds like buttered toast, I thought to myself: “We have a damn nice hobby.”

    Aftershave:
My first use of the aftershave. It’s more sweeter than the soap, more plum, more jasmine, but still a banger. I did the right choice to order it for the lathergames and further shaves. Because of the Sandalwood in the ingredients, I paired it for today, although I am not able to extract these notes among the other ones.

    Fragrance:
Boss bottled was a sample I got way ahead of the games and only tried it once, but surprised me. Sweet apple notes fade to something spicy. After a few hours, I smell a little bit of sweetness, like cinnamon and mild woody notes, like vetiver and probably a slightly creamy sandalwood note.

    Daily challenge:

    Photocontest:
I looked at way too few pictures, but u/Chronossieur420 and u/gcgallant stood out. But my vote goes to u/gcgallant.

    Rookie of the year:
u/pridetwo will probably make it with u/tsrblke second place. I hope they will keep our sub and hobby faithfull.

    FOF:
Although u/red_mosquitoMM’s posts are tldr for me, even a blind person sees his talent. Only one who could make it up with him would be Will from B&M.

    LG Winner:
u/priusaurus. He announced it in his first post and I would laugh a lot if he gets second place. While his first posts had good quality and was inventive with the interviews, it got repetitive. Thats not how I want to play the games. Thats not what I enjoy about the games. I want madness. I want shitpostings. I want drama. I want people to go crazy and innovative. The podcast would never be successful if we have boomers and u/J33pguy13 rave over quality posts: “The way he describes the use of lavender in the soap was so thoughtfull. I could really picture myself having a picnic in a lavender field”. Bla Bla.
But finally priusaurus pulled himself up and stepped in u/Djundjila’s footsteps and brought everything to the table. The spite posts with u/MrTangerinesky only pushed him forward, while still keeping up quality.

    Lather games day 29

    • Prep: Warm water
    • Brush: APSaveCo - 28MM G5A SHD
    • Razor: Henson AL 13 Medium #RAINBOW
    • Blade: Gillette - Minora
    • Lather: Proraso - Red
    • Post Shave: Proraso - Red
    • Post Shave: Osma - alum block

Proraso is classic and everyone is used in life. I can make a jokes but the truth is they are so popular and for this price you have great product. In fact I lake much more Proraso Red sandalwood scent then TOBS Sandalwood. But I give all my proraso collection to one friend. And now I borrowed it for today. Slick and make Lather really fast but dry my skin. Like I say in my early posts I shave to indulge my self for relax and pleasure. And I'll prefer Gentleman's Nod, Stirling, Spearheaded, B&M, Chiseled face for my shave.

I can write only about me. And this is not because I am one egoistic megalomaniac just because this month I have to much work. Two big projects plus my everyday work. Every free second this month I dedicated to Lather games. Even at work I write or filming. Literally sacrifice part of my sleeping time and I don't have time to see what other participants do even MrTangerinsky. That's why I'll share my favorite and not so favorite moments of this journey . I gained experience in this month more then half year before. To shave with different style razors and soaps that usually I am not gonna buy. Trying to make something interesting to me and to you. I have so much fun and cursing. Stupid rookie mistakes and unusual situations. Like idea to steal guitar feather and go on red traffic light or use gun lubricant for shave. One of my favorite video is "military laboratory" I laugh so much during the filming. And cursed so much when I realized that have to write first aftershave not alum block. Thank God ( and merciful judges ) this mistake was corrected. But other will cost me a lot. When I try to make aftershave with vodka and coffee. Was nice idea and good for video but really shity aftershave. And this is not the real shit!!! After That at evening I use Holly Kow "Iced tea" because this "moonshine after" doesn't work and didn't edit the post. Stupid rookie mistake and this is my only regret this month. I was mad at me when forgot lavender aftershave but I manage the situation and buy one. Was mad but not so mad like day 9. And jinx day when I was nearby small waterfall and everything goes south. I hope you have fun reading my misfortune. But you never see the stupid video me stirring with toilet brush Stirling's Deton8. I'm pretty sure Ron like ex ranger will appreciate it. I think this is the time to thank to all people that read my post and comment. To judges give all this efforts! And to my friends from my shaving club! Ivo Borisov, Tzvetan Vujarov, Vasil Katzarov, Ivo Atanasov, Dimitar Gerasimov and famous MrTangerinesky. Without them I never be able to cover all 30 days!

Today I'm rolling with my three favorite sandalwood scents in all of shavedom. All different takes on sandalwood, but all blend amazingly well together for a wonderful woody sandalwood bomb. I would be remiss if I didn't use a wooden shave brush for this one so I busted out the Elite. The kamisori kinda sucked, but I escaped without any cuts or major irritation. It has me rethinking using a Weck for the next month. I know the point is to get better at it but I'm not sure I care enough to lol.

As far as who I think will win LG, I'm not sure. I haven't been following every post, but there are some definite contenders like u/OnionMiasma, u/Priusaurus, u/Crisp_Mango, u/chronnoisseur42O, and u/hairykopite to name a few.

    July 29, 2023 – Sandalwood Sandwich

    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Badger #composite #shd
    • Razor: Chiseled Face Legacy #cnc #rainbow
    • Blade: 7 O’Clock – Sharpedge (Yellow) (1)
    • Lather: Red House Farm – Sandalwood & Bourbon
    • Post Shave: Zingari Man – Traditionalist
    • Fragrance: Maher Olfactive – Waking Dream

Had to think a bit about this setup and it took a few tries but I put it together. For #fof all three of these scents have a sandalwood note in them, prominent enough to be be called out in the descriptions. And it progresses so that the sandalwood is up front in the soap, moves to the middle of the pack in the balm and then plays base note to the iris in the EdP. Overall a pretty good, but nontraditional progression. Sandalwood up top, sandalwood in the middle, and sandalwood on bottom. Hence, sandalwood sandwich.

Since this is u/j33pguy13’s CFL, a quick note him, shaved great. Smoother than expected, no irritation. Needs some technique work on my part. I see what people mean about the pineapple handle being slippery. It’s also beautiful. I love the flame treatment (#rainbow tag). But also not sure I can justify $350. Sure could get a non treated one, or the aluminum. But why half ass anything. Maybe in a few years.

As I’ve been doing my #photocontest ties in with the challenge. It’s vegetable themed and my prediction to win this whole thing is a vegetable… Wait that doesn’t sound right. Point is I included am onion in the picture for a reason. I’ve said it before, I think u/onionmiasma is running away with this thing. He’s been on point the whole time. And while it’s unclear to me if he’s gonna lose 2 points on wildcard Wednesday for not using things marketed as posts and frags (thus blowing the 30 of each bonus) he’s still crushing it. (I think the WCW rules extend to post and frag but not sure.) Just look at the legendary post category on the portal, it’s got more onions than a Philly cheese steak. As for individual challenges hard to say he didn’t own wildcard Wednesday either. I gotta hand it to him even if he did one up my kids kitchen shave. Outdoor day, crushed it. Hell I don’t even remember the challenge for autumn, but his 10 pass on the road shave should be it’s own challenge.

There are of course other competitions. Obviously I hope to pull off #ROTY but who knows. Getting some serious competition from u/pridetwo, u/whosgothepudding, and others. Should have upped my game earlier.

And #photocontest is anyone’s game. I didn’t start this intending to take 30 photos and hit all the themes but I did (even if I used #photochallenge on day 7, so only 29 count.) Many people haven’t been declaring themes so there’s probably only been about 5 to 10 in contention for that prize. But a ton of great shots for the best shot.

And then there’s #fof. Let’s be real, I apologize to judges for my posts there. I’ve been participating but mostly as a way to focus my themes and force myself to spell them out. I’ll be dead last on that. I’m not even sure I understood the assignment enough to take a guess at who’d win.

1 more then the board is set and we just wait for the reveal.

    July 29, 2023 – LG Day 29 – Santal Saturday

    • Brush: Stirling Synthetic Li’l Brudder
    • Razor: Razorock Mamba 70
    • Blade: Lord Extra
    • Lather: Black Ship Grooming – Stede Bonnet
    • Post Shave: Epsilon – Scottish Spirit
    • Fragrance: Essential Parfums – Orange X Santal

I have surprisingly few sandalwood-centric soaps, but an increasing number of fragrances/EdPs that feature sandalwood. Stede Bonnet is probably the most sandalwood-prominent soap I own, with teakwood sharing the stage. It’s a really nice blend, and I’m glad I like it, since I bought it at the behest of Mrs. hugbckt due to it reminding her of Our Flag Means Death. This was followed up by Scottish Spirit, which felt like a decent match as a spicy woody fragrance, and then brightened by Orange X Santal, which is a delightful but light fragrance by Essential Parfums. The citrus comes first, which then opens into a nice sandalwood accord, but fades faster than I’d like. #FOF

Time to talk about why someone else should win. Thankfully, there’s a rubric so today doesn’t functionally mean anything, other than to laud those who stood out.

    • u/Priusaurus was not only entertaining by announcing that everyone else was playing for second, but also by providing quality, informative and/or entertaining interviews with artisans and chatbots.
    • u/OnionMiasma consistently commits to the bit and really loves the road-trip style shitposts (e.g., almond adventure and trip to Wisconsin) and the biggest commitment to the bit: gasoline on the face
    • u/djanovshaving made some of the best, tightest, and well-edited videos I’ve seen related to shaving
    • u/ginopono is an incredible photographer and is my PhotoContest pick, and shaved in a restaurant and managed not to get kicked out
    • u/hairykopite cracks me up and is just consistently hilarious, and I love the image of him in the doghouse due to using War, but the hot sauce was fine
    • u/Newtothethis has mastered the ability to be concise while still pumping out high-quality LG SOTD posts
    • u/tsrblke put more effort in than any other ROTY candidate I saw, and is my pick for that side contest
    • u/RedMosquitoMM describes fragrances and scents the way I wish I could, and is my pick for Feats of Fragrance

I'm sure I've missed folks, but these folks are who immediately come to mind!

I'm a big fan of classics and staples. There is probably nothing more of a staple or classic than TOBS Sandalwood. I know the judges are probably rolling their eyes at something so basic, but I genuinely enjoy it. Whipped up with my new B13 that I'm enjoying, it provides such a luxurious experience. I decided to finish up the shave with another classic; Floid. It is slightly cooling, which is perfect for summer, and smells like what your Grandfather's Grandfather would wear. But still very enjoyable.

For today's challenge, /u/MrTangerinesky has been killing it. The effort he puts in is unparalleled. But not to discredit anyone else. There have been some amazing posts. Like shaving in a certain restaurant. I think I did pretty well for my first Lather Games, think I'll have a legit shot for ROTY, but think I'll miss out on the regular standings on account of missing a couple of daily challenges. It's tough to actually quantify the contents without access to the data, but the djudgeme portal has been amazing. Seriously props to the mods for setting all of this up and putting in countless hours in daily, and shout out to all of the other contestants for putting up such good quality posts!

    Until tomorrow!

Proraso Red, aka Proraso Sandalwood, aka Proraso Red Super Formula™.

No real link between my post shave and fragrance, except they're all... OMG they all have sandalwood in them. I was going to say they all smell amazing and they're all sort of dark and woody. So, accidental relevance perhaps?

Raconteur is so good. It's one of my favorites.

Madame Chouteau has grown on me a little bit over the past year, or however long I've had this tiny little sample that I got from u/ShavingInCT. A little bit goes a LONG way. It used to smell a little too much like an ashtray to me, but I've grown to appreciate it.

Today's Theme: Sandalwood - I'm pretty sure a soap named sandalwood works for sandalwood day. Djudges ran out of ideas by the time they got to day 29 huh?

Today's Challenge: Do our homework day. - So I've actually got some people in mind that I'd really like to highlight.

First of all, /u/ginopono with the Pei Wei Asian Kitchen shave was not only incredible in his own right, but also inspired /u/Priusaurus to get kicked out of a Thai restaurant on coconut day. Absolutely incredible stuff and I must say that public shaves have been off the hook this year's LG.

Then /u/onionmiasma has been absolutely crushing it on the regular with both humorous and high-effort shave posts. I think people are heavily sleeping on his shave at the Bean he did a couple days ago. We're all getting tired over here as the end of LG draws closer, meanwhile onion be like "I didn't hear no bell"

/u/tangerinesky and /u/djanovshaving have been the greusome Bulgarian twosome all month long too with absolutely hilarious shaves and great interactions with the whole community. I genuinely believe that /u/djanovshaving might be one of the top rookies in this crop of rookies. /u/tsrblke has been a top tier contestant alongside myself and djanov in the rookie class, and I really do enjoy his interactions both around the subreddit and on discord.

And while everyone saw /u/Crisp_Mango kick off lather games on an absolute tear, you'd be forgiven for being unaware that he has quietly been collecting Legendary Post points at a pretty steady rate as well.

And last year's winner /u/RedmosquitoMM has been quietly killing it all month long too. No victory laps for him!

    LG Top 5:

    1. /u/Priusaurus
    2. /u/Crisp_Mango
    3. /u/onionmiasma
    4. /u/mrtangerinesky
    5. /u/RedmosquitoMM

    ROTY Top 3:

    1. /u/djanovshaving
    2. /u/tsrblke
    3. /u/pridetwo - because I'm humble like that.

FoF Winner: /u/chronnoisseur42O - I don't know if anyone else has noticed his fragrance combinations, but they've been hot fire all month.

My personal pick for top post of LG: /u/ginopono shaving in a Pei Wei Asian Kitchen

My theme for today's shave: Sandalwood yo

On the eve of this year's Lather Games' final day, it ends for me much the way it began - with a miserable and bloody shave using a razor type that I've never touched before. I could blame it on using Personna blades instead of Kismets, or on the choice of hair shaper instead of a sextoblade, but let's be honest. It's a skill issue. I won't be doing Austere August so my shot at intense honing of my weck/hair shaper skills is out of the question for the immediate future, though I may do a couple practice runs on my cheeks to get used to using a folding straight razor.

This lather games has been so much fun to compete in, and I've really enjoyed getting to know more of the community throughout the month's shenanigans. Thanks again to everyone here and elsewhere that have helped make Lather Games what it has become.

I'm a noted sandalwood hater, I think it's one of the most boring scents out there and completely overplayed. It's the Hoobastank of perfumery. Santal Auster is a nice, deep, resinous sandalwood scent though.

I listened to Iced Earth's The Blessed and The Damned, it's a collection of their most well known songs with some live tracks sprinkled throughout. Great album, great band. I always tear up a bit at Watching Over Me. #photocontest #FOF #ROTY

Sandalwood and Amber, that's it. Nothing too complicated, but done well. I really enjoy this one from 345 and find it a "creamier" sandalwood than most I have smelled before. The fragrance is also from 345 and while it list several notes I get mostly sandalwood from it as well. As such, software today is linked by being on theme.

Challenge - I feel dirty giving my opinion here as I've been traveling and exploring the last week so I haven't read as many posts as I'd like. With what I have read though a couple people come to mind. u/onionmiasma and u/priusaurus have been consistent in top tier quality posts. u/redmosquitomm is of course in the running for FoF, as yet again, every post of his I read this year leaves me jealous of his ability to write and describe things the way he does. u/chronnoisseur42o continues to impress with the pictures as is normal and has got to be near the top for the photo contest.

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

Last year on Sandalwood day I used Barrister and Mann's Sandalwood and commented on how it was the favorite of the ones that I had tried. Being the keen observer that he is, /u/J33pGuy13 noticed that I did not mention The Traditionalist in my write-up. Because the "enabler" gene runs strong in him, and sensing FOMO weakness in me, he suggested that I try it. Naturally, I bought a tub because, like many, I enjoy sandalwood scents. And, as he predicted, I love this one too. I have definitely been looking forward to today's shave.

As to the challenge. I don't keep track of points for myself and definitely don't bother keeping track of points for others. And, unlike last year, I have not read all of the comments each day. This is my loss because what I have read this year has just blown me away. The commitment that some of you take to these games is astounding. I'm not going to categorize by contest (I'll let the djudges do their thing), but I have been impressed by so many of the contestants this year. In no particular order, and from memory, I'm going to tag the following folks just to express my appreciation for their "game":

    • /u/Priusaurus - the interview idea was brilliant
    • /u/Onionmiasma
    • /u/mrtangerinesky
    • /u/ginopono
    • /u/chronnoisseur42O
    • /u/RedMosquitoMM
    • /u/hairykopite

I'm sure I've left someone out. My fault. It's kind of a low effort comment.

    Two notables, though ...

To /u/alg82, today I shaved with Zingari Man The Traditionalist. I used my Simpsons Chubby 2 brush, and an EldrormR Industries MM24. I followed up with Zingari Man The Traditionalist aftershave, and some Thayers Cucumber Toner.

I have enjoyed these non-conforming comments a lot. I chuckle every time.

And if there were an award for most surface area covered in the games that absolutely needs to go to /u/Newtothethis. Gutsiest move I ever saw shaving legs and armpits for the Lather Games. Total respect from me, plus(!) you know how to say Jaaaaaag!

And finally, to /u/Enndeegee ... Scrub

Day 29 of Lather Games: So many choices for today's theme... I could probably do a whole month of different sandalwoods, but that's someone else's thing. cough u/35048467 cough I went with the Traditionalist in part to get my last sponsor in and also because it's been a while since I've used it.

I'm probably the worst person to copy off of or have me do your homework in this matter, but I have taken note of u/priasaurus's interviews and u/Crisp_Mango's song parodies. Apologies to other strong contenders, but it's been a busy month and getting my SOTD's in has been about all I've had time for. I have never smelled a pure Sandalwood essential oil that I considered pleasant. I don't really care much for true pure sandalwood. But fantasy accords of a creamy, idealized, imaginary sandalwood? Heck yeah. Proraso Red is a good example. Yes it has real Sandalwood oil in it, but it also has - TADAAAA - "Parfum" listed right ahead of it in the ingredients. And Santal Auster? Despite the name, there's a lot of stuff going on in that perfume to create its magnificent portrayal of sandalwood that ain't just sandalwood EO.

Ice Blue is off theme though; I just think it smells nice paired with Proraso.

    Challenge:

It would be unfair for me to open my mouth on which players I think might win / deserve to win LG2023. And while I always award excellent photos with good scores, I haven't really paid attention to who wrote those posts... I do a lot of judging without checking the user name because I don't want preconceptions or biases to sway my scoring.

FOF though? I didn't see a lot of high-effort FOF players in general, so it Did catch my eye when good fragrance writing popped up and the player who stands out most in my memory is /u/Chronossieur420 . I suspect he probably has a good chance at FOF this year. (That said, I don't judge FOF at all, so I really have no idea who's in the lead there!)

Challenge: The 2023 Lather Games Scoring Hot Strategy Tip noted "The point spread between the top five players was less than three points", so missing one LG SOTD virtually guarantees being out of the running. Scanning the DJudge Portal, I noted that roughly half of the participants posted SOTD posts for every LG day, and of the daily posters, around 20 were chasing every point. Having done my homework, now it's time to answer the challenge:

    • Lather Games Frontrunners: u/OnionMiasma, u/Priusaurus and u/Crisp_Mango. The amount of preparation by Priusaurus and Mango puts them near the top. Onion's posts are consistently the most enjoyable read for me so if I have to pick one, he gets the nod.
    • Feats of Fragrance Frontrunners: u/RedMosquitoMM and u/chronnoisseur42O. I learn something about fragrances every time I read one of RedMosquito's posts, and Chronnoisseur has been playing Fragrance Ninja by silently impressing me with his frag knowledge.
    • Photo Contest Frontrunners: u/ginopono, u/jwoods23 and u/raymoonie consistently posted thoughtful, eye-catching photos.
    • ROTY Frontrunners: u/pridetwo and u/tsrblke and then it's the rest of us rooks.

Daily Theme/Shave: Proraso Sandalwood is by far my least favorite Proraso product. I don't like the smell and the lather is meh, yet here we are (next Games I need to be smarter than this!). Remembering Proraso doesn't respond well to my current lather-building technique, I went old school and kept the lather pasty. I continually rehydrated the paste with my off hand and ended with a DFS. To reward my nose for having to tolerate the Proraso Sandalwood smell, I finished with Varen. #ROTY

    Day 29 - Sandalwood Saturday

    • Brush: Maggard Razors - Black Resin Handle Synthetic Shaving Brush
    • Razor: Merkur - 34C
    • Blade: Astra - Green
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann - Sandalwood

    • Fragrance: Dossier - Woody Sandalwood
    • Fragrance: Home mix - 1% Javanol

I bathed in the smell of Sandalwood today. I started the day with Fu-in Sandalwood. Then shaved in B&M Sandalwood soap and balm. I recently bought a palette knife to scoop soaps, I now play with my soaps like I am stirring plaster. Cleaning the knife, re-scooping a few times, and then leveling out the scoop. Turns out I am a man-child. haha

For the fragrance, I went with a Santal 33 Dupe. I recently tried another dupe, and it was way different, less floral. I have no idea what the real Santal 33 smells like now. Anyway, I bumped up the Sandalwood with a spray of Javanol.

    Daily Challenge/Write-Up:

Have to be a little short and sweet today, because I'm traveling.

These games have been an absolute blast. First I'd like to call out the djudges- it's a lot of work putting this together and reading about all our stupid antics.

On to who I think should win-

#photocontest - I'm uncomfortable naming names since I'm a judge here, but in my mind there are two clear frontrunners. I'm excited to see who ends up winning.

#ROTY - This to me feels super clear. u/tsrblke seems like the clear favorite here. He's been super engaged, and I'd also expect him in the top 10 overall.

#FOF - There are two that I feel like are clear standouts here. Between them, I can't choose a winner. Either u/RedMosquitoMM or u/chronnosieur42O

The games overall - I've made it no secret that I've been playing to win. In my head, there are a handful of people right there competing for the crown.

u/priusaurus called his shot day one, and has probably been the most consistent player since then. He regaled us with interviews, history lessons, shitposts, and everything in between. If I were putting money on who wins, he gets my nod. My play was better because I was constantly trying to outdo him, with limited success.

u/Marquis90 was a slightly quieter (no open feuds or calling me out) player, but no less consistent. Hilarious posts like his ice shave, the stack challenge… day in and day out great posts.

u/Impressive_Donut114 - for great, well-done, and succinct videos every day

Some others I'd like to recognize for particular contributions to the games:

u/MrTangerinesky - the lion still doesn't care what the Mountain Goat has to say, but watching his videos has been entertaining, if shocking at times.

u/newtothethis - thank you for teaching us how to leg shave, and for continuously injecting humanity into this mess

    And most importantly-

u/ktturtlesue - for your ideas and putting up with my stupidity the last 20 years. I may have dialed it up to 11 this month, thanks for being willing to laugh at me rather than be annoyed.

    Soap Theme Justification

Sandalwood Saturday - I think Proraso Red is many people's first exposure to Sandalwood. However, as Sandalwood goes, it's not my favorite.

    Post-Shave and Fragrance Relevance Notes

    • Today’s theme is “Sandalwood”

    • All three are primarily sandalwood scents. The splash has some bergamot added to brighten it up, but I am a walking sandalbomb today.  TBF, I preferred being a Lavender bomb, especially because I find sandalwood scents to land better in cooler months

    • Razor: Maggard V3
    • Blade: Astra SP (Green)
    • Lather: Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements – Sangre De Drago
    • Post Shave: Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements – Sangre De Drago

Had to sneak in some PAA. This old tub is pretty much scentless now. The splash has chunks of something in it. Maybe beard crumbs. Scent: Dragons Blood, (Mysore) Sandalwood, Indonesian Oud (Agarwood), Benzoin, Tonka, Linaloe Wood, Spruce Hemlock, Amyris and Tobacco Absolute.

I believe the winners to be OnionMiasma or alg82 or chronnoisseur42O

    • Lather: Chicago Grooming Co. (Formerly Oleo Soapworks) – Sandalwood
    • Post Shave: Declaration Grooming – Cerberus
    • Fragrance: Maher Olfactive – Santal Auster

I don’t think that anyone has used this soap yet so far. I love the base but the scent on this one is quite weak. That’s OK though, Cerberus splash and Santal Auster frag to the rescue.

I wish I had time to pay more attention to the games this year, but alas. I see some strong contenders even from the small tastes that I’ve taken of reading the daily posts and listening to the podcasts. I’ve tried my best to at least provide a decent SOTD photo for y’all, but as to the winner? I am excited to find that out myself in due course, so no predictions here. Hat’s off to those who gave it their all, that’s for sure. Also, I don’t do homework.

    2023-07-29 Sandalwood

    • Brush: Yaqi Metal Timberwolf
    • Razor: "Germany"
    • Lather: Haslinger - Sandelholz
    • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. - Varen
    • Fragrance: Chatillon Lux - Weinstrasse

    Sandalwood: Sandelholz, indeed.
I think this is interesting: If the Online Etymological Dictionary is to be believed, the sandal- part of sandalwood is cognate with the word candle, and traces back to a Sanskrit word along the lines of "wood for burning incense." It seems to be unrelated to the footwear word sandal. Etymology is fun!

Relevant Post-Shave and Fragrance: On the topic of word-fun, I'm far more proud of this than I have any right to be: the name of each is a non-English germanic word; Sandelholz and Weinstrasse are both German and Varen is Dutch.
The razor also kind of ties in, because it appears to be made in Germany. That's literally all I know about it. Well, that and that it handles like a less-bitey Old Type.

    #FOF
I didn't think I was a fan of sandalwood, because my first experience therewith was from one of Maggard's empty tubs, which had been from a sandalwood soap (I don't recall which), and I found it unpleasant.
Sandelholz provided a different experience. It started unremarkable, its scent faint and its lather unimpressive. By the time I was done, the lather was much stronger, and the scent it provided was rich, warm, soothing, and even classically manly. I don't know what that other soap I tried was, but this is much better. That said, I still hesitate to call myself a fan sandalwood.

Following it up with Varen, the strong oakmoss and vetiver fit right in, bringing some green to the wood. The lavender note of Varen seems to come through more in the aftershave than the soap, where it feels more like a subtle afterthought at most, u/oswald_heist. As such, the lavender offers a smoother transition into the florals of Weinstrasse.

As an aside, I feel like my smell-sensor has learned a lot over the past few weeks, during which time I gradually became better at picking out individual notes. I still have mixed feelings about that, if I'm honest. I still feel that a scent should be appreciated for its whole.
At the same time, though, it seems comparable to, say, a color. As a simplistic example, take a single color in the RGB colorspace. The color is its own thing, but one can still identify that it's more red or blue, or dark or light, without losing sight of the color as a whole. With scents, you can identify, say, oakmoss or tobacco or nacho cheese without losing the overall experience.

Weinstrasse makes me realize that, though I've made strides, there's still much to learn. Specifically, there's a bunch of notes here that ~~I'm not familiar with~~ I haven't learned in isolation, i.e. honeysucke, iris, helichrysum (?!), coumarin.
The scent certainly reminds of white wine off the top, accompanied by floralness and... something sharper that almost competes for the attention of the wine, which must be the blackcurrant, I dare guess. As those fall away, the oakmoss and musk (musk being a note that I learned on day 1 of these Games) affirm their presence. I realize I'm largely just describing how top/base notes work, but hey.

Fun fact: white wine comes from red grapes! The difference is that the grape skins are removed from the grapes during the production of white wine, whereas red wines get their color from the skins that are left on.

Challenge Accepted: I'm of the opinion that this challenge should be re-framed to reflect what it's really about. It's not about the judges or their scoring. Never has been. It's about recognition of Games well played and identifying the players who ~~require mental health treatment~~ have demonstrated devotion to the Games.

I think it's pretty clear (not to mention heavily hinted by the djudges) who's in the top running for the Games. In no particular order, u/MrTangerinesky, u/Priusaurus, u/OnionMiasma, u/hugbckt, u/hairykopite, u/tsrblke all seem to be top contenders.

As such, u/tsrblke also seems pretty likely to take the top-scoring ROTY spot.

As for #photocontest, a quick glance at the portal seems to indicate that there's only a few who have carried through with that contest hitting all the days and themes. Notably, I've had an eye on u/chronnoisseur42o throughout the month. Meanwhile, I doubt I did myself any favors with a couple of, uh, "liberal" interpretations of loosely-defined (or simply non-defined) categories.

    #photocontest
    Photo: Society
This one was probably the trickiest to figure out how to do—or rather, what to do. I've just been winging it from day to day, so I missed a few days when this could have been easier (Pei Wei folks having lunch or people walking by the park, for instance).

Last night was pretty stormy, and we had dime-sized hail here in the desert. That's not unusual for this time of year; our summer storms are characterized by massive raindrops, which are big because they form as hailstones; on occasion, they manage not to completely melt as they careen through the firelike air. As a result of the storm, internet went out for a while last night, and it was out this morning and is out still.

What's one place where people go to use the internet when not at home? The library! I mean, I don't, but people do.
A regular public library was an option, but the university has those neato wooden steps. They weren't there in my day, though. I might have been able to try to get the effect such that my little pieces of wood blended into the steps, but I figured it probably wouldn't have been worth the effort.
I did, however, wait around for someone to use the stairs there (to no one's surprise, not a lot of students in the university library in July) to really get the society theme pegged.

For Sandalwood Day, I thought the best place to shave would be the woods and appreciate the natural sandalwood all around me. Then I googled where Sandalwood comes from, hoping to go to the local sandalwood forest, and quickly learned it comes from India, Australia, and Hawaii. And none of those places are driving distance to me. Dammit. Buuuuuut… Cedar is half of the scent notes in the soap I used today and we have White Cedar trees everywhere! Bingo! Let’s go hiking! It’s a great day to shave in the woods! So I woke up early, made myself a wonderful cup of Stirling Ethiopia Yirgacheffe with my v60, into a travel mug. And brought it hiking with me.

Today I’m working with Castle Forbes Cedarwood and Sandalwood, because it’s Sandalwood Day and it’s half of the soap. I used Southern Witchcrafts Samhain splash because sandalwood is the 2nd scent note listed on the bottle. Try as I might, the other scent notes certainly come in stronger, but the sandalwood is certainly there. This is such an amazing scent. Then my frag was Kenneth Cole Mankind Rise. It’s described as a deep woody amber scent. Perfect for Sandalwood Day, perfect for going into the deep woods, and perfect for a morning hike. #FOF

As I walked through the woods, I made sure to take the time to appreciate all the smells along the route. It absolutely downpoured yesterday, so it smelled a little damp and musty. The scent of pine surrounded me as I went further into the forest. A lot of the paths were muddy and smelled like a swamp. And of course, the smell of the wet rocks getting enveloped by the river around them. This. This is what nature is all about. And, unfortunately, mosquitos are also part of nature. I had to spray on bug spray which kinda messed with the nature-scents thing I was going for, but whatevs. I hiked along this path, listening to the sounds, thinking of the events of the last 29 days, and I came upon the opening to riverbed. It seemed so very peaceful that I decided this was the spot I wanted to shave at. No grand theatrics today, and no hyperbole or gimmicks. Just an old-fashioned, relaxing shave at this beautiful spot on the river, among the woods and nature, as I enjoy my coffee. Taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the world around us, taking about our next Lather Games Champion…

    Here's the video.

For the challenge, as much as I’d like to be brash and say that I should win in order to fulfill my day one prediction of winning this whole thing, I believe one man has stood in my way. One man, has done it better than I have and has been a wonderful ambassador of the games to every single participant this year. That man is kind, funny, and one of the most creative people we have on this sub and he will make a great Lather Games Champion. He’s the only one person who I can say, I’ve looked forward to and read every single one of their posts. And that man is u/OnionMiasma. He didn’t initiate silly feuds, participate in Spite Shaves Wars, or get kicked out of any restaurants – because he didn’t need to. He stuck to what he is good at, did his thing, and did it better than anyone. While I was doing my best to be over the top, charismatic, and entertaining, trying gimmick after gimmick, he was just being himself and being damn good at it. I felt like I had to try to do SO MUCH to keep close to him. I believe the Legendary Post points will be what makes the difference and he currently has more than anyone. And rightfully so. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets another one before this thing is up. It’s time for Red to pass the crown to Onion, and I can only hope that next year, Onion loses internet for a couple days in June, because I think that is my only hope of beating him.

The winner of FOF has got to be u/RedMosquitoMM. His ability to detect scents and so eloquently and accurately write about them is unparalleled.

Photocontest: No clue. While I try to read as many posts as I can, more often than not, I don’t click on the SOTD pics. I’ve been trying with the scavenger hunt part, but no idea how anyone else is doing.

For my own #photocontest entry today: Scenery.

I feel very fortunate to have connected with Southern Witchcrafts for the final interview of my Lather Games series. They made the splash I used today - which happens to be one of my favorite scents in all of wetshaving. Southern Witchcrafts makes absolutely, unique, outstanding scents and great performing products. They have a wonderful vegan base, and most importantly to me, they don’t use palm oil in anything – including their bath soaps! I’m not sure any other artisan can say that. But if you’re reading this far, you already know all this. So, thank you u/Phteven_j for connecting me for Courtney for this series. I love what you both make, what you’re all about, and I couldn’t think of a better way to close out my interview series. Without further ado, the final entry:

    10 Questions with… Southern Witchcrafts

    1) How did you get started making shaving soaps?

I have strange taste in fragrances and choices of vegan soaps were kind of limited back then so I thought it might be fun to make my own. It wasn't supposed to be anything serious at first but we sent out my first try to some friends and they loved it just kind of grew from there.

    2) All of your shave soaps are vegan, which is getting more popular, but even more impressive is that your bar soaps are made without using palm oil. Why is that important to you?

Palm oil is a big contributor to deforestation but also known for its production being riddled with human rights violations like child and forced labor. We always try to be as ethical as we can with our ingredients.

    3) I really, really love how all of your scents are completely one of a kind. Which is your favorite?

I feel like Carpathia does the best job of getting across what I was going for. It smells like the wet bricks of a dilapidated castle in the Carpathian mountains. It's what I would imagine Nosferatu would shave with if he was homesick.

    4) What surprised you most about starting your own shaving/grooming company?

Just that people would enjoy my weird creations.

    5) I live in Massachusetts, which historically has not looked kindly toward witches. Do you think a company called “Northern Witchcrafts” would have been crushed like Giles Corey?

Thankfully things up there have improved since back then. I have visited a couple of times and at no point did anyone try to throw me in a lake or press me to death. I consider that a win for progress.

    Today’s Theme:

All three are sandalwood scents. Pretty much hits the theme.

    Today’s Challenge:

Not a fan of cheating on the homework, but points are points.

For the LG overall there are a few people I can see winning and one I’d think would be awesome, but not enough shaves to contend.

u/OnionMiasma - I think all the on location shaves were great. Very engaged and funny. Not which one to win! This timeline, or the alt-universe. I guess this universe because in Bizarro World, PAA is a top artisan. Trying to guess where he’ll go next year, maybe shaving in the bleachers at Wrigley?

u/CrispMango - I can barely think of a few things for a haiku, going for 30 songs? Also, not sure the location, but if in the US, is shaving very late at night.

u/Priusaurus and u/MrTangerineSky: The feud was very entertaining, but got a bit crazy at the end.

Really a lot of good performances this year, but I’m sad that this poster didn’t go for it every day.

u/ktturtlesue - Not shaving everyday, but I looked for your replies, and all your dunking on Onion. u/OnionMiasma looks like you got a keeper.

    Feats of Fragrance:

Fragrance has been a real journey for me this year. I’ve enjoyed learning more about the art, and trying more. I’ll say the the likely winners would be between u/RedMosquitoMM and u/chronnoisseur420

    Photocontest:

u/gcgallant - consistently has beautiful arrangements, color, and lighting.
    u/jwoods23 - I like the Lego themes

    Today’s Fragrances:

After the underwhelming cheap stuff yesterday, it was nice to get back to something good. Sandalwood is in a lot of things I have. It is usually more a base note I think, so not always upfront or in your face, but it comes out as a mellow foundation that is a bit woody (duh) and sometimes a bit creamy. I couldn’t find a list of scents in the Edwin Jagger other than warm spice and sandalwood. The soap/cream was very mildly scented, and just gave me a hint of sandalwood once I got some water in the lather. To really get things more interesting, House of Mammoth - Santa Noir adds a dark and musky flavor to the sandalwood. Lots of interesting things added to the sandalwood like black currant, evergreen scents like balsam, spruce, and hemlock, then musk, patchouli, and sandalwood. A few other scents are listed, but to me it is a fresh cut pine tree with some incense in the background. Definitely get the sandalwood from it, but there is a lot layered in there. The Rose Santal from Chatillon Lux took the darker sandalwood experience of Santa Noir, and brightened things up with the rose and bergamot. This scent has the strongest sandalwood of the three. Rose as a scent is a strange one to me. Whenever I smell something rose scented, my mind just says flowers. I’d only be guessing if I said rose. I can smell lavender and lilac and pretty much identify them, but rose seems to be my default flower scent. I was talking about that with my mom a while ago. She thinks it is probably because most modern roses you get in floral arrangements have very little scent. The were cultivated for their appearance, and lost a lot of scent over time. Features like the shape of the buds, and long straight stems were the goal. I do like this EdP, and it pairs nicely with the splash.

    Today’s Haiku:

    Sandalwood, musk, rose,
    A freshly cut Christmas tree,
    A bit dark, yet bright.

A shave I’ve been looking forward to on the calendar, until I realized the Leaf razor I bought for my wife for Christmas fits a scavenger hunt point I hadn’t earned yet and had to give it a try. It’s been a long time since I used a razor with a head that has multiple blades or any movement to it so it was pretty awkward. Didn’t cut myself or anything but I had no idea where to begin because it has a pretty chunky blade guard thing at the top. The long handle also made it pretty ungainly to shave my neck with. This was an experiment I won’t be repeating.

The smells were better, as I really like the light sweetness of Vanilla Sandalwood followed up with the drier sandalwood splash, and then topping it off with the coppery-metallic sandalwood of Radio Bombay, a favorite frag of mine.

I’ll update later when I have a chance to think over the potential winners…if I remember.

I can't get on the numbers train. Proraso red smells like a forest floor, just 100% twigs and dry rot. The TOBS gel and Stirling edt smell a lot cleaner, thankfully 😅

The relevant post and frag theme is Sandalwood.

For today's challenge, my money for the photocontest is on u/gcgallant for the gin and tonic shot or the flower shot, for fof on u/RedMosquitoMM because he writes with so much authority that his competitors agree to use his posts as scent references, and I have too much inside knowledge to opine publicly on the LG lead and I think that [REDACTED] will win with their consistently high quality posts with a greatly dose of pleasant shenanigans. One post in particular, [REDACTED], shows everything that makes Lather Games great❤️.

Challenge: I didn’t realize we had a homework assignment. You know, aside from being asked this question every year. I’m not the one who’s supposed to be reading and djudging all of the posts. You’re asking someone who’s going to take a C-/D+ on the test, and that’s from cheating off the judges from listening to the podcast.

Who’s winning? I’ve enjoyed /u/Priusaurus’ interviews and his posts have been interesting and well written. I think he has a good shot.

Feats of Fragrance is tough. No one has taken it to the level /u/USS-SpongeBob did last year. There’s a bunch of us doing consistent write-ups. It’s going to be close.

I haven’t paid attention to the photo contest. I made no attempt to compete in it. Isn’t it points based on a checklist? You want to me to go through and add up everyone’s themes? That’s what the bot is for.

Thanks to /u/schontzm for the smoosh. This is my first time using Proraso. The soap was very soft, so I’m assuming it’s the cream. I’ve noticed that when the topic of Proraso comes up on the sub, sandalwood seems to be the favorite. I can see why. I used the whole smush thinking I would need all of it for two passes. This is a very fluffy soap. I ended up with enough for four passes. It lathered easily and was plenty slick. There was a bit of secondary slickness, but not a lot. My face feels very dry right now, but the shave was pleasant. This is a good sandalwood fragrance. Off the top of my head, I would say it’s dry. Let’s look through the list: “decalinyl formate” sounds like what I’m smelling. It's not very complex, but it's sure to satisfy fans of sandalwood.

I bought a sample of the aftershave to use today. It also left my face feeling dry. It’s lightly fragranced. In addition to sandalwood I smell a bit of aloe, which makes the sandalwood in this smell creamier than the soap. I like the soap, I could do without this splash.

Santal Auster is an unapologetic-ally masculine sandalwood fragrance. This smells like “amyris acetate” variety. It smells a bit earthy. It has a warm, honey sweet, resinous quality. There’s an animalic note that comes in on the tail end, like a beaver that chomped a bunch of sandalwood. While I got a lot of sandalwood at first, the animalic note now overpowers it. There’s something that smells kind of sour that inter-plays with the warm sweet note. I like animalic fragrances. This is a very good one. Once I stopped nosing it constantly and gave it time to dry down, it comes off as Sandalwood, again. It's an awesome fragrance whichever stage of dry down it's in. It's layered, nuanced, and refined. It feels classic.

The community really stepped it up this year. I'll admit that travel and various unforeseen circumstances pulled me away from the sub, and prevented me from keeping up with the Lather Games threads as much as I wanted, but I still noticed players going hard. Honestly, I needed the laughs. I just wish I had been able to keep up more and ensure I wasn't missing folks, which I definitely did.

So who's going to win this thing?

There are a few contenders I'd guess are competing for the top of the pack. u/OnionMiasma may have topped a darn-good 2022 performance with post after post of Lather Games gold. Those day-log posts are probably the highlight of his 2023 run, but that doesn't do the rest justice. u/Crisp_Mango wrote song after hilarious song—clever tunes every one of them—and even recorded future hit singles. The chaotic energy of u/j33pguy's top notch Lather Games 2022 performance lived on in u/MrTangerinesky, who's escalating "feud" videos aimed at Onion and u/Priusaurus have brought me to tears a few times. (I've also chatted with him quite a bit this week about some heavy stuff, so I need to thank him for that too.) Speaking of u/Priusaurus, his high-effort posts are essential reading; those interviews with our various artisans must have taken lots of planning to coordinate and are a clever way to stand out in a crowded field. Along with unique posts and all those interviews, he managed to clap back at u/MrTangerinesky—I am all about the fake drama and Hulk Hogan impressions. u/pridetwo may have gone under the radar a bit, but those SOTD photos are hilarious, and I could learn a thing or two from concise writing. And that's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg: u/Marquis90, u/hairykopite, u/chronnoisseur42O, and u/Impressive_Donut114 all dropped bangers.

Which brings me to the side contests. Feats of Fragrance had an interesting year, including folks with unique approaches to the contest, like u/putneycj's haikus. u/Tetriside's and u/ginopono's scent descriptions were more detailed and personal, about the experience of wearing these fragrances. u/tsrblke effectively explained why all three scents were linked, often in an abstract way (something I try to do often), which can make for a fun SOTD. And, of course, there's u/USS-SpongeBob. Even just posting quick #FOF thoughts for Wally, I learn something new. Before I move on, check out the photo contest entrants; I feel like I'm missing at least one consistent photographer, but u/chronnoisseur420, u/gcgallant, u/cowzilla, and u/hairykopite all brought their James Webb to a Polaroid fight.

I should get back to the shave.

Today we celebrate the warm, rich, woody charms of sandalwood, a material that many of us have only smelled in the context of a fragrance, or a wholly synthetic recreation of the real thing. Sandalwood can smell creamy, musty, spicy, and earthy, and different varieties vary wildly. For example, the coveted Mysore is reportedly both creamy and robust, while Hawaiian sandalwoods are sweeter. (I can neither confirm nor deny either claim.) Include synthetic materials and there's a staggering number of permutations. I'm partial to the spicy sandalwood simulacra of deodorants and cheap cosmetics.

All three of my products revolve around this wonderful material. My lather uses it to balance sour citrus, my aftershave is powdery barbershop sandalwood, and my fragrance leads with sandalwood before revealing an equally important saffron accord.

I started off with Ghost Ship, a top-tier Summer seasonal that combines grapefruit and sandalwood over a "Black Amber" base. I don't know anything about Pennsylvania's Black Ship Grooming Co., but Ghost Ship has popped up in many "favorite scents" lists over the years, and it was an immediate favorite once I gave in and ordered a tub. I've heard earlier Black Ship soap bases weren't ideal, but I find Kaito easy to work with, very protective, and slick. Coconut oil is still ingredient number two, but this soap is loaded with plenty of seed butters. And I'd buy this soap again even if the base was truly awful. The sandalwood here is creamy, sweet, and very smooth, making it an ideal companion to tart grapefruit. The amber reinforces that smooth, woody quality while texturing the scent with a bit of added complexity. For a three note blend, it sure smells like Ghost Ship has more going on, while simultaneously allowing the grapefruit and sandalwood to shine. I love it year around.

Getting to my aftershave, there's not much left to say about Proraso Red. Interestingly, I've read this is either the most or least accurate sandalwood scent out there, which reinforces what I was saying earlier; there are many flavors of sandalwood—natural, synthetic, or both—and the type you're used to regionally likely determines what you think smells correct. I happen to like the spicy, aromatic quality of Proraso Red, but it also reminds me of scented urinal cakes. (Better-smelling than most, sure, but still chemical and about to get drenched.) This take on sandalwood is quite powdery, with a resinous warmth I'd expect from a dash of sharp cinnamon. It works well as an aftershave, leading with a harsher, spicy vibe, and settling into a powdery one with time. Like Ghost Ship, lots of complexity for such a narrow scent profile.

Ophir is a different story—there's tons going on here. I've used a couple of Blackbird fragrances this month, all of which or are extremely conceptual; this one focuses on specific materials instead, reveling in entangled sandalwood and saffron accords. It leads with the sandalwood, a dry woody heart (lots of guaiacwood, perhaps) rounded by nutty notes, and textured by pungent spices just waiting to tip the scales in their favor. Ophir avoids lively or fresh in favor of warm and smooth—there's no tangy citrus, juicy fruit, or anything green. Continuing with dry woods and spice (I get nutmeg and stronger-yet black pepper), the sandalwood eventually gives way to a leathery saffron that carries just a whiff of rubber, sweetened by rosewood and restrained florals. If you want the complexity, texture, and wear of an incense fragrance, but don't like the of burning resins, give Ophir a try. It's among my favorites from this house and handles both sandalwood and saffron perfectly for my tastes.

Homework Challenge: There have been so many great posts this month. The portal has made keeping up with the highlights much easier this time around. That said, I've thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to the vendor interviews hosted by u/Priusaurus.

    July 29, 2023 – LG23 Day 29: Sandalwood Saturday

    • Brush: DG B13 Butterscotch 28mm
    • Razor: Eversharp Eagle TTO #UNICORN
    • Blade: Voskhod (2)
    • Lather: Nõberu of Sweden – Sandalwood
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Adumbrare
    • Fragrance: Burberry – London for Men

Today’s shave I decided to forgo my typical shave and went right for the head today and found another razor I could be comfortable with using in the shower. The Eversharp Eagle sometimes misknown as the Krona, is quite similar to the Lady Gillette, which I have also tried on occasion. I’ve blind shaved for so many years, I guess it was natural to finally be able to use a safety razor over a cartridge.

The Nõbertu Sandalwood soap was quite slick and made, from what I couldn’t see, a decently creamy lather. The scent is on the very light side and I might be detecting some leathery notes with the sandalwood. Nice enough that I’d be interested I further exploring the brand, but it seems they might me more mainstream focused than artisan wetshaving.

Thanks to the sandalwood note in Adumbrare, I can pull some more happiness into this shave from the lack of fragrance in the so. When I learned about this one it was late in the game. I was happy to have found this sealed bottle at the Maggard Meetup PIF table.

Finishing off with Burberry London whose notes do not actually include sandalwood. It’s tobacco notes play in common with Adumbrare. The citrusy and woody notes are a natural matchup to boost the warm woody notes of sandalwood.

Fragrant Theme Overall the scents of the soap, aftershave , and fragrance combine into what could be made into its own delightful fragrance.

Daily Challenge I was never good at cheating on tests. Not that I tried it a lot, I was always more worried about the consequences of being caught than those of just being an underachiever. But I would also argue that the results of being compared to my over achieving younger brother and sister have been a cloud that has seemed to loom behind me.

Let’s give the Djudges some crib notes anyway.

Best Shave by a Sock Puppet, ̶h̶a̶n̶d̶s̶ ̶f̶e̶e̶t̶ foot down goes to Sapo on Leftorium Challenge day. He didn’t want to bother with the hassle of creating a Reddit account, so forward your accolades and Maggard credits to me.

Best Lather by a Sock Puppet also goes to Sapo for the Lather With a Sock daily challenge.

Best Triple-Team Attempt at Masochistic Frugality (though I will graciously donate my share of the reward, should I win, to Dollar Tree Dan), though only two participants used the same instrument, goes to Team Dollar Tree: u/OnionMiasma, u/Priusaurus, and me.

Most Consistently Organized (ROTY) posts as judged from a random sampling of posts goes to u/curbside_champ. User has a standardized setup with easy-to-read formatting. Had I been a djudge and been required to actually read them, these are just the posts I want to read when scoring against a rubric.

Most Exciting New Bulgarian Shaver (ROTY) goes to u/djanovshaving. He flexed his shave muscles right away, posting from the set of The Voice of Bulgaria. He also shaved while slinging some serious 7.62×39 lead down range, and in the mountains of his motherland and educated us on Bulgarian culture along the way. Simply amazing.

Best ROTY Overall goes to u/tsrblke who slugged it out every day like he was mad at being mistaken for a two-wheeler. He brought his family as seemingly willing spectators in his farcical antics and genuinely participated in the best spirit of the games.

Best Use of The Bean award goes to none other than u/OnionMiasma. Not only does he succeed in his purpose, but encourages a fellow citizen to join our ranks. The only logical reason someone would laugh and run away from a strange man shaving in front of the Bean, is that they are hurrying to catch the next AP Shave Co. brush drop and maybe get in on some cheese soap and Mtn Dew aftershave.

Photo Contest As I was a photojournalist by trade for several years, I know what I like. The Djudges have their own ideas. Good luck to them in picking a winner and good luck to all entrants.

Feet of Fragrance award undoubtedly goes to u/hairykopite for his nimble-footed leg shave.

Feats of Fragrance award goes to… the award is a tie between the equally illustrious and eloquatious u/RedMosquitoMM and u/chronnosseur420 for their fragrantically fantastic olfactory expositions.

As for the overall winner, it would be a disservice to try and come up with a winner with such fantastic SOTDs and a high level of hijinks. You have an u enviable job this year, Djudges. I’ll look forward to the final results!

Sandalwood from Stirling because, well, sandalwood. It also happens to be one of my favorite sandalwood dominant scents. Samhain because it has a sandalwood note.

I think there are a few out in front and it may come down to the legendary bonus. u/onionmiasma, u/crispmango, u/Priusaurus, u/impressive_donut114 and u/chronoisseur420 all got a shot. Onion has been consistent with some dedicated crazy posts, Prius with the interviews – good and funny ones, mango is obvious with the songs, donut has a certain flair and videos are very enjoyable, chron used an effing ice cube kamisori….

I haven’t followed fof as closely but u/redmosquitomm always has fantastic write ups.

For ROTY, u/tsrblke has been consistently putting in his dues. Except that one day when he forgot to post his lather.

I think u/gcgallant has some great photos with u/chronoisseur420 again.

For some good memorable posts, u/hugbckt with his sip of the essence of LGs in a glass. Of course u/newtothethis with honorary scrubbing and the leg day how to were great. I can’t stop laughing at virtually every one of u/alg82 on theme posts – incredible 20 second read in the Tolkien length LG SOTD daily threads. Never missed one.

DAY 29 LATHER GAMES! WHO'S GONNA WIN IT!?!??!

    • Prep: Water
    • Brush: DS Cosmetics 30mm Tuxedo Knot
    • Razor: Blackland Vector
    • Blade: Chinese(13)
    • Lather: Taylor of Old Bond Street - Sandalwood Shaving Cream
    • Post Shave: Proraso - Sandalwood After Shave Lotion
    • Fragrance: David Beckham - Intimately Beckham Men

    PIC OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN

    DAILY THEME

Now we all know that sandalwood is one of the most overused fragrance in men's cosmetics and is probably the most popular(or mainstream) scent for men. It is considered a woody fragrance. When I first came into contact with this scent I got a lot of sweetness and spices from it, with time I started to appreciate the woody part of it and the smoothness that it carries. Compared to other woody scents like cedar and other similar coniferous types, Sandalwood is a lot more mellow and brighter, you don't get that piercing aroma you get from coniferous types.

As with many things, a lot of the products that carry the scent of Sandalwood do not actually use authentic sandalwood oil. There are over 19 species of Sandalwood in the world. As some have already said today, the best quality Sandalwood is made in India. The thing that characterizes Sandalwood is Santalol.

Here are three examples of different types of Sandalwood:

    • Santalum Album(East Indian Sandalwood) from India - 51 - 80% Santalol
    • Santalum austrocaledonicum(Pacific(yellow) Sandalwood) from New Caledonia - 51 - 65% Santalol
    • Santalum spicatum(West Australian Sandalwood) - 25 - 45% Santalol

Here is a quote from a study made based upon products in Poland, Germany and England:

"Good-quality sandalwood oils derived from the Santalum album plant at a price equal to or greater than the chromatographically tested items amounted to a negligible percentage of products sold online. Without knowing the botanical name of the essential oil plant and the price range of unadulterated sandalwood oil, the likelihood of buying a reliable product is low on all of the analyzed websites, with the lowest probability being observed on Polish sites."

DAILY CHALLENGE! WHO GONNA WIN IT!!??

This year has been quite different than last year's edition, a lot of people have stepped up their game! For first place, I have no idea who it will be, but if I had to guess, and as much as it makes me salty I'd probably say u/Priusaurus. Dude was too consistent, and those interviews he made pre-LG... And they were good, not just interviews, that's dedication... HE ALSO BIRTHED A NEW SOAP(well not him, but you get it). Also reading through the comments I see that I probably only helped him with the Spite Shaves, but I won those at least! Again this is a guess, cause there are maaaany factors at hand.

What I will do is mention the people(in no particular oder) that will be in the top 6(was gonna be top 5, but gotta include myself). This also overlaps with my favourite posts/posters of the month:

    • u/chronnoisseur42O - You are so consistent that it's crazy, GRANITE! Great videos, great write-ups, great photos! He has it all! True wetshaving at it's best!! I still think you should make a channel!
    • u/OnionMiasma - You are no lion, just a two timing SOB who stole my idea, but you went above and beyond with it. The gasoline as an aftershave, which I truly applaud! And the many shaves trip, sending personal memes to everyone and many many more! Truly crazy and deserving! We were side by side last year as rookies, and we are side by side here again!
    • u/RedMosquitoMM - What can I say that hasn't already been said on day 2? You are more than consistent and have a silver tongue like no one else here! I don't think you went out like last year, but still damn good! I am thankful that I got to know you a bit better this year and share some moments with you!
    • u/Priusaurus - BROTHER!!! I really had fun with you this year and am stunned at the level of dedication you brought to the games from Day1! I enjoyed all of your posts, your energy and level of ingenuity! I still have to buy a damn ocean to get square with you....
    • u/MrTangerinesky - Dumb fuck!
    • u/ginopono - While I have not interacted with your posts, I did thoroughly enjoy them! Similarly to chronnoisseur you are very, very solid and consistent with great pictures and just the right amount of length to your post. Also you have a very good style of writing which I also enjoyed!

    For Feats of Fragrance(drumroll):

    • u/RedMosquitoMM - Yeah no surprise there. Man is a beast when it comes to fragrances. With his help(if he decides to) I will try and become better at describing and appreciating the subtle nuances of different fragrances so I can be better next year!

    Photo Contest:

For Rookie of the Year, couple of people(also this year PALES in comparison to last year, I hope next year people will step up their game):

    • u/djanovshaving - Gotta give you a shout-out my man! You came and you killed it, what makes me happy is how well people accepted you and enjoyed your posts!
    • u/tsrblke - One of the few Rookies that tried and put effort into their posts!
    • u/Crossan1983 - One of the early birds I always saw when opening the daily theme who was consistent in his write-ups!
    • Honorable mention to u/souleater7173 I applaud his consistency for daily fitness while participating in the LG!

    Man is my post long....

    #FOF

I ain't gonna win anything from this whole thing, but yeah gonna give a few lines. It is a cheap fragrance that doesn't last long, you don't get the cheap vibes from it, but it could be much better, it fits the theme and that's it more or less.

Didn't get around to trying the original Haslinger base, but the newer one works quite well. Somewhat difficult to lather without pulling out of the container I have it in, since it is a much smaller puck than average these days. A nice sweet and light take on sandalwood. Captain's Choice sandalwood is a very straightforward scent, but Sandalorian is a masterpiece. A fruity, funky Sandalwood, and the dry down is amazing.

I have not been as engaged as I hoped I would be this year. With the games moving to July and an unexpected job change I have not had nearly the bandwidth that I would have liked.

That being said, I have really enjoyed u/Priusaurus interviews with the various vendors, and once again u/OnionMiasma for engaging (or attempting despite my lack of time/effort), being entertaining, and just generally a stand-up guy.

    1 shave remains…

More Maggard samples for today's shave. Very pleasant sandalwood scent that sits right in the goldilocks zone for Scent strength in my mind.

    For the challenge:

Winner of the lather games: u/OnionMiasma Best of luck bud! I really felt you went above and beyond. One of my favorite posters without a doubt.

    Fears of Fragrance: u/RedMosquitoMM

Photo Contest: u/chronnoisseur420 had some great photos.

Lots of great posts and it was a blast participating in my first lather games!

Honorable mention to u/tsrblke who gets my vote for roty. Great guy and a great set of legs.

Since I just PIF'd my last straight sandalwood scent out the door earlier this week, this will have to cover it. I'm tossing Signature into the ring because (1) this is one of my favorite soaps, and (2) we have two different varieties of snadalwood here: Arabian Sandalwood & Tunisian Sandalwood. There are other scents here but this does add up to a solid sandalwood-y shave, and I'm gladdened for that.

As for the challenge part of this day's shave: I know not who ought to win this year's Lather Games, but I know it most likely won't be me. I do enjoy just getting forced out of old habits and made to try new things, which is why I participate. And it's fun all around as well.

    • Blade: Astra SP (2)
    • Lather: Castle Forbes – Cedarwood and Sandalwood
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Sonder
    • Fragrance: Duke Cannon – Sawtooth

The Soap/Lather: Having not used this sample of cream in over a year, it is definitely harder than it should be. That said, it still lathers up beautifully. Castle Forbes, from what I’ve sampled, has the best shaving cream base. The scent of this soap definitely presents both sandalwood and cedarwood with little else to distract you.

The Shave: The lather from this cream helps to provide a smooth and effortless shave. Really no complaints today. I followed up the shave with Sonder splash and my Sawtooth frag.

Theme: Castle Forbes needs little explanation as sandalwood is in the name, but let me explain the aftershave and frag a little more. While Sonder isn’t an extreme burst of sandalwood, it does provide sandalwood notes and the flowery notes fit right at home alongside both sandalwood and cedar. The sawtooth continues the woody notes and rounds out any rough edges to the scent combination.

    Challenge:

    • Overall Winner: I think u/Priusaurus will likely ascend the throne as the king of the hill this year. His posts were well done and challenges effectively handled. He was likely compelled into doing more than he planned due to the ongoing feud/competition with the equally impressive u/MrTangerinesky, but that’s just my speculation.
    • ROTY: As much as I would like to claim this title, it is not mine to take. I am more than capable to admit defeat to u/tsrblke. His posts consistently hit the mark and provided a basis from which to djudge all other ROTY posts.
    • FOF: This can only go to u/RedMosquitoMM. The eloquent explanations and flow of the scent descriptions consistently take you to a place where you feel like you are right there with him on a scented journey.
    • Photo Contest: While I admittedly haven’t tracked every photo taken, u/chronnoisseur42O definitely stood out in my mind. That Lavender day shot was just killer.
    • Videos: While there were a number of videos that were full of humorous shenanigans, u/Impressive_Donut114 provided a consistent set of videos that were well edited, entertained, and provided a complimentary musical background.
    • Most Disturbing Shave: This probably needs to go to u/hugbckt. I hope to never see another man drink his shave water again.

I could go on and on talking about a number of other competitors. I have really enjoyed reading the threads and watching the videos. One more day to go.

This is my first time trying something from Zingari Man. I got this smush from the generous u/J33pGuy13. The scent is really nice. There's definitely a traditional feel to it. A powdery sandalwood blended with musks and spices. The performance I thought was really good. Honestly, better than what I was expecting. It was easy enough to whip up a thicc and slick lather.

I got a trick of labyrinth in mid LG and I immediately fell in love with this scent. It paired really well with The Traditionalist. The sandalwood in both sticking out more while being sweetened up by the Myrrh and lavender. I can't wait to trickhole this set.

As far as leaders in LG, u/MrTangerinsky, u/OnionMiasma and u/Priasaurus are definitely leading the pack. u/gcgallant has provided some amazing content for the photography contest. u/djanovshaving and u/pridetwo are crushing roty. u/RedMosquitoMM is delivering on FoF, as you would expect.

    • Brush: Omega 20106

    • Blade: Gillette Rubie (34)
    • Lather: Red House Farm - Sandalwood & Bourbon
    • Post shave: Storybook Soapworks - Shaken
    • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Company - Sandalwood

For me, Sandalwood Saturday is also Red House Farm appreciation day. This is u/grindermonk's brand, and he makes a fine shaving soap (many worlds better than the Arko I used yesterday). It gave me a nice, smooth shave today.

On the scents: there's at least a bit of sandalwood in everything today. Sandalwood & Bourbon is a fine scent, well balanced between the two core elements. It's a sweeter sandalwood here, I think, although that might be influenced by the bourbon, and it might seem drier without it. Shaken isn't exactly Sandalwood-heavy, but it's present. Just in the background, and to be honest, it's hard for me to pick out. So, I'll pick a perfume with a little heavier dose: Stirling's Sandalwood scent is a very sweet sandalwood with I think a little bit of spice in the accord. It goes nicely today!

As for the challenge... I haven't found time this year to keep up with the posts as much as I'd have liked. There's a lot going on! I did catch u/Priusaurus and u/MrTangerineSky's fake feud, the spite shave videos, and the driving shave. I like u/Crisp_Mango's songs, and u/Impressive_Donut114's daily videos. u/NewToTheThis's advice and scrubbing/no scrubbing for leg day was fun... u/Marquis90 has had a few fun posts I've caught (I'm a Link fan), and u/OnionMiasma's motor oil shave was a fun start to Wildcard Wednesday (and a little unbelievable he ruined u/MrTangerineSky's plan).

So, of what I've caught (I still need to listen to the latest podcast to catch up!) I'll give to u/Priusaurus: while he hasn't managed one every single day, I'm a big fan of the interviews, as it's a fun way to above and beyond the usual antics. They remind me of u/WiRey_GuY's origin stories.

As for the other contests... man. I'm even less sure. The photo contest has added an interesting element to all the SOTD pictures. I dunno about winner, but let's revel in recency bias as I point out u/jwoods23's picture today (maybe not least because he also ended up using the same soap I did).

For FOF, I'm honestly going to punt. But, u/RedMosquitoMM always has interesting thoughts, and of course placed second last year. Also, personally, his post got me to take a real second sniff of a fragrance sample I'd disliked, January Scent Project's Horla. So, why not nominate him to win this year?

Today’s shave has the honor of being the only set that I borrowed from somebody I know in real life. I normally really don’t like sandalwood scents, and I’m sad to report that trend continues. Performance was great, hated the scent. Can’t wait to get rid of this stuff. No more super obvious sandalwood for me, thanks.

To win the whole shebang I’m guessing OnionMiasma. They have the most legendary post points, and has consistently created my favorite posts all month. I haven’t been following FOF at all, so I’m going to guess RedMosquitoMM, based purely on name recognition. I’m guessing HairyKopite for the Photo Contest. Their picture of Cannonball with the little model swimmers is still my favorite, all time, SotD photo. The challenge didn’t ask, but I’ll give a guess anyways. I’m pegging chronnosseiur420 or trsblke for rookie of the year.

My bike is in the shop for the next couple days, so I’m sad to say that my LG biking journey ends at 111 miles. Going to include a reflection on my progress for the month in tomorrow’s post.

I recently learned what sandalwood smells like and I enjoy it. It kinda smells like a lot of typical “masculine” fragrances. Like if something doesn’t smell manly enough, let’s throw some sandalwood in there to make it more tolerable for the masses. And that’s kind of the impression I get with Black Tie LVS. The LVS stands for Lavender, Vanilla, and Sandalwood. The lavender shows through right away and it is tied to Vanilla, but underneath that tasty floral sweetness is the sandalwood to turn the volume down a little bit. It’s a really nice scent the checks a lot of boxes and I think I can use something like this year round. I finished the shave with Diesel – Only The Brave Street because it’s woody and spicy, so I thought it would help bring out the sandalwood from the Black Tie LVS. And as it turned out, I picked up a stronger scent of vanilla in the cologne that I didn’t smell when I sprayed this tester before. Funny how I expected one thing, but when I layered this cologne on the splash, it seemed to almost change or morph into the aftershave I was wearing. #FOF

    CHALLENGE

If u/Priusaurus doesn’t win, we riot, right? That is how this works, right??? I recognize I may be biased because he sent me smushes, but I don’t think so. The interviews were a great way to hear from the people that make the stuff we use, but he didn’t stop there. It seemed like every day he was shaving somewhere new or doing a new shtick. A lot of people did funny stuff and a lot of people were informative in their posts, but he was a great mix of everything. I looked forward to his antics and the content of his posts. I can’t say that for anyone else.

For #FOF: I have a feeling it’s not me. This was my first Lather Games and I was in way over my head here. I saw the challenge and figured there was no harm in trying it, but it seems like the consensus is u/RedMosquitoMM is gonna win. Based on the post of his that I’ve seen, that seems about right.

For #ROTY: I haven’t been paying attention at all. Sorry team. I missed the ROTY announcement before the Lather Games started and never looked back.

For #photocontest: u/gcgallant has had some great pics.

Fairly straightforward shave, I used a sampler from Stirling for my Sandalwood. The only pronounced Sandalwood in my collection right now is in the LEA Classic cream so I wanted to nice big straightforward sandalwood smell. Unfortunately I don’t think I got that off the Stirling puck. Still great performance and my new Chisel and Hound brush really likes these Stirling soaps and is totally coming along as I use it more. Since I don’t have a splash with sandalwood and the puck soap really didn’t give me much but a great lather , I splashed on Dammusi because I have only gotten to use it once since LG started, plus Chicago Grooming Cos splashes just work so well with my skin.

For the challenge I just wanted to recognize u/enndeegee , though while not a player in the games I’ve really enjoyed their work scrubbing and no scrubbing the competition. I know I’m not going to win the damn thing but I at least know I’m at not a total scrub in this arena of my life. Their work also helped highlight some posta I may have missed. Also, was helpful suggesting a tech or superspeed in the DQ day thread. I made my trade happen slim for a tech and I’ve been real happy. Todays shave with the tech I received was one of the better DE shaves I’ve had.

For players, u/mrtangerinesky ha really made me laugh. I hope u/rebdoomer wins the the second ROTY award, I’m a sucker for brevity and consistency. Also I really enjoy when people of positions of power or judges or rule makers can be upset when someone is clearly not following the rules or meeting the expected behavior of a group/game but also meeting the minimum requirements. Not sure if this is an intended disobedience or contrarianism but I see you u/rebdoomer and I like your style.

This has been a blast. Thanks to all the players and so much to all the judges. Really this is fucking awesome.

    Cheers! 🤙

Why is Castle Forbes so expensive? Is it the amount of time this company has survive the ages! Is it the scent flowing that has captivated a mass audience? Is it the ingredients they use? I am still in dismay because I could smell the cedar and all but it was not anything special! I would argue HoM, Stirling, summer break had more memorable of lasting scents. Was my sample bad? Possibly either way maybe I was expecting more. Am I turning into a soap snob??

DAILY CHALLENGE: Well I feel that I am not qualified enough to give a true response for todays challenge. I may be bias and to be honest I am not even sure what all the parameters really are. Case in point I am still learning the terminology and have to search words here and there to understand what some of the posts mean. So here is my utterly and completely bias opinion. Today, we took sandalwood Saturday quite literally.

You’ve spent days on the desert planet of tatooine, your leather plate armor beneath the beskar growing heavier each day as it takes in your musk and sweat. Despite not belonging to their tribe, your newly formed gaffi stick has left sacred wortwood dust and shavings in every crevice possible; the tusken chieftain looks on with approval. You exhale, sweat dripping from your brow beneath your helmet. Your next breath makes you realize the warm woody and leather aroma permeates from you under the 2 suns, a hint of resinous ceremonial incense lingers in the background. Alas, your time has come to make way back to the capital of Corsucant, you put your starfighter into hyperdrive to catch some much needed rest. Upon arrival, the heavily perfumed floral senators pass by and it mingles with the remanence of your musky, woody, dominated regalia. In need of sustenance, you give a few Galatic credits to the nearby vendor, who graces you with the rich aroma of jogan fruit. Then you notice the few meiloorun fruits in the corner, reminding you of your time on tatooine, you ask for a few. Finally secluded to you quarters, you remove your helm, the exotic fruit now truly mingling with your tired, woody, musky self, and just a hint of the florals still caught in your nose so prominently worn amongst ethically questionable senators of the galaxy. #FOF

For my #PHOTOCONTEST, I went with wild animals. I’ll be honest birds and squirrels were all over the feeder in the morning. By the time I set up for the photo, scarcely there. My peanuts could not lure the squirrels back, so we went for a lone bird. I know our photo judges must have keen eyes, but I included a r/uselessredcircle just in case. No joke, I also videoed for like 1+ hour hoping to take a cool screen shot to no avail.

As for the challenge. I have to think u/Priusaurus, u/onionmiasma, u/MrTangerineSky, and u/crisp_mango all made strong showings for the podium.

For u/priusaurus, the interviews, witch, ice and restaurant shaves were all great. Brought his A game everyday.

For u/onionmiasma another A game everyday. I know the oil and gasoline shave got a lot of traction, but the Chicago bean mirror shave had me in stitches. Great interaction with many players too.

For u/MrTangerineSky, he pushed the limits and was continuously hilarious. Wonderful outside setting shaves. Also, he speaks highly of me so he’s clearly pretty smart.

For u/crisp_mango. That dude was one of if not the first poster almost everyday putting out shaving tunes non stop. That takes skill.

As for FoF, reigning LG champ u/RedMosquitoMM (and 2022 FOF runner up) was eloquent all July. Said he had to take it easy this year and still walked circles around majority of players.

For #PHOTOCONTEST, I think u/gcgallant consistently had really cool photos, often in some differing style. I think my favorite was u/impressive_donut114’s Death Before Decaf Photo. Beautiful shot.

As for ROTY, I think u/tsrblke was a consistent poster and putting in bery solid effort, way better than my rookie year for sure. I think u/djanovshaving was superb too. The way he just continually integrates the memes, pics, and gyfs makes for fun reading.

At the risk of sounding like Bobby Newport, can we show self love too? I had a great time this year, particularly pushing myself more with photos. I like to think I went ESPN 30 for 30 on that shit. However, in hindsight I could have used aforementioned names against them. I wish I had done more to include LGers in photos. I mean, Onion for vegetable, Mango or Tangerine for fruit, Donut for food, Mosquito for insect, Priusaurus (that’s and extinct animal, right?!?). NTM u/j33p_guy13 for vehicles or u/airbudruler for airbudrule. You get the idea.

Fun Fact: When I first started in this endeavor to save money my first razor was an Edwin Jagger DE89 and my first “soap” was TOBS Sandalwood. I thought it smelled great, but, it burned the heck out of my face and I think I ended up throwing most of it out, honestly. I had a terribly inexpensive Omega Boar brush, too. Straightforward Sandalwood has never been my friend and this Angora wasn’t that different. It’s a soap (thrown in on a Black Friday deal) I’ve never used before in a scent that I steer clear of, but, it got me some theme points. Performance was underwhelming and by the back end of the 2nd pass I could feel the face burn start to kick in just a tad. It wasn’t overwhelming (nothing like Melange), but, it’s not exactly pleasant, either. Scent, ok not great – smelled like a very dry sandalwood which just wasn’t my favorite.

Paired it with Sonder and the underlying “creamy woody base” that is at least partly sandalwood and now I both smell and feel great.

The G5C got the job done and net me another brush hashtag. It’s not my favorite synthetic, I’ve come to appreciate much softer synths that aren’t trying to convince me they’re badger or whatever (they could not, anyway) – but – this whips up a solid lather and has much stronger fibers than the Motherlode that I have come to prefer.

Admittedly I have not read nearly as many posts this year as I would have liked, however, it’s been impossible not to notice u/OnionMiasma and u/Priusaurus and their relentless pursuit of victory. High effort post after high effort post, I’m sure the points that separate them at the top will be very small; it’s been a fun battle to watch and either would be a worthy champ – though I do think the edge goes to Onion.

Feats of Fragrance has to be u/RedMosquitoMM – I write Haikus but that dude gets into the real meat of what’s going on down in those little molecules. Mine are fun (for me), his are actually thoughtful and well done.

ROTY Feels like u/tsrblke to me – I would not know he was a rookie if it weren’t for the ROTY on his posts – really stepped up and having a great showing this first go.

Photo contest – well – no idea. I’ve barely looked at photos, I couldn’t even venture an educated guess. Shame, I know, I’m sure there are some great ones. My photo today (not in the contest) includes a picture of my own bathroom sink, finally. After a dozen shaves in these games away from home, it felt so good to shave in a familiar bathroom.

    That said, here’s my Haiku:

    FOF Haiku of the Day

    Sandalwood was dry
    Sonder softened, expanded
    Creamy over dry

    • Brush: Noble Otter 26mm Synthetic
    • Razor: Henson AL13 #CNC #RAINBOW
    • Blade: Gillette Platinum
    • Lather: Declaration Grooming - Original
    • Post Shave: First Aid Beauty - Ultra Repair Cream

    Daily Write-Up:
I am irrationally excited that our house has a functional bathtub again, so I figured I better give it a test run. Asked Onion to go root around in the MiasmaDen, and he surfaced with some options. I selected DG Original since its sandalwood is tempered with bergamot, which was quite pleasant.

As for the challenge: I have enjoyed reading these posts every day. I mean, I am rooting for the home team (u/OnionMiasma), but the antics and the passion and the interactions have brought me much joy.

A special note for u/MrTangerineSky: The lion married a lioness. Consider yourself warned.

    Soap Theme Justification
Original = sandalwood + bergamot. Right on.

    Post-Shave and Fragrance Relevance Notes
FAB Ultra Repair Cream is a versatile workhorse and made my previously parched legs happy. No fragrance here; the thought of spraying it on my legs weirds me out a bit. I suppose I could dab some behind my knees at the pulse points in an old-school Hollywood glamour sort of way or something. Let's just pretend I did that, since I'm not nearly that sophisticated, nor am I playing for internet points.

    • Brush: Simpson Synthetic
    • Razor: Gillette Tech
    • Blade: Astra SP (Green)
    • Lather: Proraso – Sandalwood

Theme: Proraso was almost my first shave soap because of its availability on Amazon, I went with it because Maggard’s had a sample and I wanted to know what could have been. Its…okay. It smells okay, it shaves okay, but it left my leg feeling very dry.

Challenge: what can I say that hasn’t already been said. Mr.Miasma has to be tired of mentions by now.

Hot Take: Can’t be ROTY if you were too scared and unimaginative to shave something for leg day. u/trsBlke is my pick for ROTY, dude shaved his legs twice.

    July 30, 2023 – Lather Games: Day 29

    • Post Shave: Wet Shaving Products – Sandalwood

WSP makes great products in my opinion. I love all of the scents I’ve tried thus far, and Sandalwood is one of those. For those who would like to try it, be forewarned, it is not powdery or cologney (yeah, not a real word). It smells like wood. Now whether it smells like true sandalwood, I do not know. There are several varieties of sandalwood, and I’ve never had a chunk of any kind of sandalwood to sniff. I will assume that it’s correct though. The performance is excellent, although I find their products a little too expensive, especially their aftershaves.

I think /u/onionmiasma, /u/RedMosquitoMM, and /u/MrTangerineSky have been killing it. Wasn’t it the same way last year?

I can't believe u/J33pGuy13 and I used Proraso Red for a whole month. The scent is there, but the performance leaves something to be desired. Followed up with Torchwood and smelled great all day.
