    Another day of the $BarnyardChallenge. Yesterday's musical inspiration was Pink Floyd's Animals. Today, I'm thinking Pig Destroyer is the appropriate soundtrack. I think this boar knot is already bending to my will and now it's just a matter of getting the tips to split further. Before and after pics here. I don't have any complaints about this set up 5 days in. I feel like I chose a nice and easy soap/splash combo that's not going to annoy me over the next 25 days.

    On to the coffee part of the morning and then it's off to Boston with the wife and dogs as our vacation rolls on. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

    So, a few days back I nicked under my nose. Alas this is right where my cpap sits do it’s very angry. I shaved around it, but we’ll see. I have to remind myself I struggled this much with my gem run last AA. Sometimes it just takes time to learn a razor or a blade needs it calm down a bit.

    On the brush side, I left more water in the brush when loading this time and while messier I got a full shave (my usual.2.5 passes) with a 30 second load. That’s clearly the ticket. If anyone else is struggling with loading the boar, try a wetter brush.

    The best shave yet with this gear so far. Brush is holding lather well, or at least enough for all passes. I think soaking the brush for about 10-12 minutes is the sweet spot. I tried u/tsrblke advice with a wetter brush and it seemed to help quite a bit. Made lather easier and felt better on the face.

    We're 5 days into AA RawHoggin and still no funky smells have emanated from the Unbleached Boar. The bristles are slowly starting to split, but the knot's still dropping two to three bristles each shave. Overall progress is a little behind last AA's 506U break-in, but since the 506U was bleached and this 507N is unbleached, the delayed progress is understandable.

    The Black Boar knot

    The knot is deeply disappointing to me. If there is one thing I can't stand in a brush, it is excessive bristle shredding. Yesterday I realized that the soap had sections of bristles of approximately 5mm, I could count more than 15, today I put less pressure loading the soap just the tips with almost no force. But they continue to break, they are so britle, today I count more than 6. It's too soon in August, let's see how it evolves.

    The Friodur is outstanding #nostroping and it's performing almost like the first day.

    Tropical Storm Debbie is still going strong dumping rain on us since 1pm (13:00) yesterday. While I was shaving it’s started coming down in sheets again and was just pounding the skylight in my bathroom. It’s not supposed to clear us till sometime tomorrow.

    As for today’s shave. All went well, lather was the best yet and the knot is softening and opening up nicely. I think I am finally used to the lightness of this razor and I went opposite hand not only cheek but neck as well. I’ll have to work on skin stretching angles. Being blind in my left eye means strange angles and head tilts to be able to see. Sometimes it’s like playing Twister on my face.

    So far I’m ahead on shaves without blood 3-2. At the last second, gave a little too much pressure near my jawline, ended up with a weeper bring blood a point closer. Still better than week 1 with a Weck. Otherwise the shave went well. Loading the brush and building the lather took a long time. I think if I can find where I left the empty sample spray bottles, I’ll switch to misting my face instead of using the brush to grab water. I also shaved the back of my neck, but will need my wife to even it up. Hard to get a straight line by feel alone.

    The brush is lathering nicely. It's not as soft as more premium boars, or even the 610. But, it's not really scrubby, either. The backbone is on the lower side, but has been working well for face lathering. It's getting to the point where it gels and stays open a bit. I loaded to a count of 40 this shave. That left some excess lather. I could probably load a little less, but I'd rather be able to make a decent lather with some left over than have it be thin. I have the rest of the month to experiment.

    2024-08-054 Austere August Day 5

    Face remains tender however not actively angry (that was a weird statement). Did two passes. One with grain and one at 45 degrees off of into grain. Mostly went well. Not super comfortable yet but better than when I started.

    I can say my neck was one place I've always been concerned about with a straight razor but have hadd the least amount of trouble there of anywhere so far this month.

    My glasses sometimes get in the way of the scale. Just a side note. I'm not Velma Dinkley (obsolete Scooby Doo reference) without them but close enough so I will get used to it.

    Now, about the new boar. Very little shedding again today. The knot has reduced the amount of lather it just plain eats by quite a large amount. So, progress there.

    Day 5: Coming off yesterday's rushed shave, I slowed today's down. I reopened a few of yesterday's weepers, but didn't do any new damage and certainly less irritation post-shave than yesterday. That's 5 straight days of 2-pass WTG / ATG shaves, which I've never been able to do comfortably before and, despite the last two shaves not being great, they were far better than any other attempt I've made at consecutive shaves iwth an ATG pass. Time to switch to WTG / XTG for the next few days to let the skin recover a bit.

    Here is an album that I am going to continue uploading to throughout the month to show progress of the brush. I weighed the tub again post-shave today and it was 137.4, a difference from yesterdays's post-shave of 11.3g... I'm not sure this tub will make it to the end of the month...

    Work was indeed a shitshow. Did a nice easy 2 pass shave tonight, the boar brush held enough lather to do both passes without a reload! I'm pretty blown away by how quickly this thing is breaking in, reminds me of the Maggard boar but with no gel. I typically shave in the AM but these evening shaves have been therapeutic.

    Brush Pics are in the short album - tonight's shave was the best yet, though probably still not "good." I heeded some pudding advice and paid extra attention to the heel, middle, and toe tonight and i think that probably helped me avoid some cuts. Just a couple on my sideburns tonight (which are usually very easy areas because flat, but I digress), otherwise nothing too bad. My chin is an absolute monster to deal with and it's nowhere near BBS - I think tomorrow I'll attack it in very small swaths across the grain and see what happens - if I can get just a few millimeters at a time but do the whole ting would could be golden. Or it'll be a bloodbath, that's always possible.

    Brush is breaking in nicely. Everett is still good.

    I'm improving, I think, slowly but surely. I'll say this - it's only day 5 and this shave was better than any I had with the weck last year, so, I got this. And so do you.

    Straight razor shave number five. No cuts or irritation though I’m still not great at my chin. I’d say DFS everywhere but my chin which is more in the socially acceptable range.

    The brush seemed less lather hungry today. Still no split tips. Seems to be losing about one hair per shave.
