Devil Take the Hindmost
Chastened by u/Enndeegee ‘s Carleton-air-ball gif in yesterday's SOTD, I decided to shave and post earlier in the evening. (Geez Enndeegee, do you also go to marathons and heckle stragglers?)
Voila un homme
I didn’t plan it this way, but the lather, aftershave, and fragrance all allude to themes of masculinity. Even the names suggest masculinity. “The Gent.” “Uomo.” “Midnight Stag.” (If there was any question about the latter, the smell more than made up for it.)
To me, the smell of Zingari Man The Gent closely approximates Geo. F. Trumper Eucris. It’s rich. It’s intense. It’s a lot. It smells fancy, if decidedly old-school.
Midnight Stag is a completely different beast. Had heard a lot about it around these parts and it lived up to its reputation. This contains Village People levels of masculinity. For the first time, though, I noticed that in terms of scent, oakmoss and gasoline have strange affinities. Like an raw, earthy, suffocating quality that’s still somehow fragrant.
Carthusia Uomo is the freshest, most summer-ready fragrance out of the group, though it too is complex, with richer notes including sandalwood and oakmoss.
And now, the Prime Minister…sinister
For the Daily Challenge I tried my best to shave with my non-dominant (i.e. left) hand—which started off okay. Screwy (my razor) did great. But I caught a few nicks in problem areas and eventually resorted to using the dominant hand. Still, I might try using the NDH again in future shaves.
Brush Strokes features a cartoon about masculinity by the ingenious Honoré Daumier (1808–1879).
