I have just under a week left here in Japan. Staying with my in-laws I have to say that a regular Shit, Shower & Shave routine has not been established. My lathering here has not been the best. My travel brush is small and I just hybrid-load it straight from the Maggard sample jar and my palm. What else am I gonna do? Ask my mother in law if I can use an old rice bowl??

I had this Flowers in the Dark sample for a long time but never used it. I quite liked the scent and performance of the soap. It’s sad they are closing down.

It’s been a great year of shaving for me. I added lots of soaps to my den. I got the Overlander which is my new favourite razor. But the highlight for me this year was the MOAR BOAR. Thanks to the crew who made that happen!! My first boar and I love it. But hey, did you all spot the MOAR BOAR prototype at the 2022 FIFA World Cup???

Lather Games off to a great start yesterday! I think I saw a lot of ROTYs - that was kind of amazing.

Nice sunny hot summer day here. Not much going on. I had a good workout in the gym followed by a quick shower and shave. I got a really good lather today and very decent shave result. The scent is great too.

Edit: almost forgot in the last second to only use the one side of the DE razor. I wonder if my shave tomorrow will be affected - I did not make a note of what side I used.

For my tribute to u/RedMosquitoMM I decided to get some Peanuts M&M’s and only eat the red ones. Those are the best! So I headed down to the Konbini (コンビニ), but unfortunately I could not find them. Brush and aftershave packed in the suitcase and shipped to airport. I scooped up a little soap in my hand and added some water and massaged onto my face to try to create some kind of a lather. Just one pass for a just ok result.

Damn….. I just realised neither figs or roses has anything at all to do with spring….like absolutely zero Figarose sure smells good, though. Probably one of my favourite scents.

I watched Dune on Netflix for the first time only a month ago. Never read the book. That’s how far behind I am. Now I finally know the background for the artwork on the Mélange soap used for today. By the way mods, what happened with yesterday’s and today’s thread? Good match with the Spice aftershave. Nice shave for a chilly morning.

I lift weights. I got into it through my friend who competed in natural bodybuilding, and been interested in it ever since. We used to share apartment when at university, so I would come along to training, bodybuilding shows, and watch training videos at home. There’s the classic Pumping Iron movie of course. I used to crack up my friend by imitating this guy talking to Arnold in the video. I just sent him that link a few weeks ago - and he cracked up again.

Also, not sure if I can call it a hobby, but something I spent a little bit of time and money on before wetshaving was hi-fi headphones, or “head-fi”. The biggest online forum in this community is https://www.head-fi.org - I don’t think I ever posted anything on there. There’s also audio shows mostly in the US like CanJam - again I have never been to any of those. The community seems to be mostly old men boasting online about how much money they have spent on their equipment - sounds familiar? Here is the goods I got before I got out of the rabbit hole. Check out Audeze headphones (pronounced Odyssey) if you can - a small company based in California. When my kids grow old and perhaps my wife kick me out, I’d like to think I will get into vinyl. But for now - it’s personal audio. On the go - I currently use my iPhone and Tin T2 IEMs. Cheap and good!

Nice clean smooth shave today. Highly recommend the Maggard SHD brush knots if you haven’t tried. Great value for money. Loaded heavy and got heaps of lather. I have the sample of Fougère Gothique too, but prefer this one. I have a lot of soaps but not many aftershaves, so this unscented mentholated aftershave that I recently picked up will be very useful.

Ah, kitchen shave day - gotta love it! To be honest though, I was not looking forward to it. Luckily my wife and kids went outside for a play date late in the morning. So I got all the time in the world to go about my day and have a nice shave. I was trying to find a hand held mirror - could not find it so I’m using my phone as a mirror. Lathering up I feel pretty good. This is going way better than expected. You know with a milksteak base soap you can’t really fuck up the lather. Taking my first strokes, I’m enjoying this shave. I remember thinking it would be really awkward if my wife came back right now. Well, it turns out I must be a procrastinator, because that is exactly what happened. Using my phone as a mirror snapping selfies, I was able to capture the very moment I realised I had fucked up

Is it safe to open my eyes now???

I stocked up on new business socks in Japan. The scent of sandalwood combined with a brand new sock exposed to water and soap for the first time was not good at all. I do not recommend.

The lather was not good either. I did the soak. Then I squeezed out the water going about it as if it was a brush. Slowly adding water but nothing happening, so I added more cream and more water. At least my bowl is good for this kind of experiment - it’s a cheapie from Kmart - I have found it to be excellent good size bowl for really working the lather and moving it around. This time however I was left with a foamy soupy later. I tried to apply the lather on the face with the sock. Yucky, so I scooped up the lather with my hands instead. Conclusion: socks sucks.

At least the aftershave was good.

Nice, my lather is on theme with today’s Sponsor. Shiloh is a great dupe of a great scent!

For my pasty lather today I decided to try out the lathering method used by the Wet The Face guy on YouTube - my choice of wetuber on Day 15. I like the channel and the guy, but my hypothesis is that the lather is slightly pasty, at least for me.

Method:

1. Apply a generous amount of soap in the bottom of the bowl
2. Soak brush and shake off excess water gently
3. Squeeze out the remaining water in the brush into the bowl.
4. Apply pressure with the brush and stir first slowly and then vigorously and fast for around 2 minutes

(Optional steps - I only followed steps 1 and 3)

1. Say: “Ok, let me wet the face”
2. Complete the shave with only one pass. Plenty of buffing with no lather.
3. After the shave, say: “Wow!!”

The result: plenty of thick lather, too pasty for my liking. No drippage.

The only time I got a positive feedback from my family was from this setup. My oldest son said it’s smells good. That meant a lot to me, because I see myself in that kid.

For the lather audit I followed the u/CosmoBarber precision loading technique. I know it’s painful because it takes a lot of time. I slowly add more water, just drops at the time and keep working it. In the end the lather is not thick and fluffy - it may not look good - but it works well for me - rather drippy and it feels slick. Pics

Wow, I’m very humbled to have received these two soaps from u/airbudruler. Sometimes I can not believe the generosity of the people in this community. Well, I guess these two soaps were simply not needed in airbudruler’s shaving routine...? What do I know? They both smell great. Thank you u/airbudruler!!! You really saved me for today’s theme!!

Shire 2 smells great. I never tried the original before. Love the tobacco, and I’m really happy to find a soap that blends in well with the fruity spicy and dank Carnivale splash.

You know, in the beginning, wetshaving can feel very daunting because there are so many different things to choose from, both when it comes to hardware and software. Take scents for example, my gosh, how many different scents in are there out there? A lot! So rather than going out and trying all these scents for yourself, it’s actually super-helpful to have someone letting you know what NOT to choose. So for that reason I wold like to send out a very special shout-out to u/j33pguy13. Banana soap? No thanks. Not for me.

My wife said she’s gonna start counting my brushes as there seems be more and more showing up.

I have one more hack that you might find useful: magnets! Get yourself some small magnets. I glued one onto a Hagen-Dazs spoon - now I have an spoon always ready for scooping out soap - and it works really well with my iron over door shower caddy. Also great for placing blades currently in use

I have been enjoying this soap and aftershave combination a lot. I won these precious last drops of this aftershave in a PIF on a Aussie shave forum - amazing scent.

• Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - Campania
• Post Shave: Nivea Sensitive Post Shave Balm

I know nothing about Gillette Techs, I bought this for AUD $15. It was described as a 1940s one - can’t see any date codes, not that I even know where to look. Hard to swallow pills…

This brush - the original horse hair knot fell out (it was the cheapest Vie-Long on the market). Replaced with a look-a-like Maggard brown synthetic for USD $11.95. Very tight fit.

Stirling soap also from Maggard at USD $0.09 pr gram. All my other soaps are US soaps and 4oz from $20 and up, so at least USD $0.18 pr gram.

Balm is normally AUD $13 for 100ml, so $0.13 pr ml, but I always get them when they are on sale at 50% off.

Blades… I got called out by u/onionmiasma for having too many blades… Well… Yes, if I use each blade 4 times I’m probably good for around 30 years. Look… uh, for me it just one less thing having to worry about, ok? That’s all. No matter how much I fuck up in life, work sucks and all… if I have the worst day of my life, at least I can come home and know that I’m not gonna run out of blades. That’s… worth something to me. I will PIF some blades in 2053 as vintage blades, how about that?
