The last time I participated in Austere August was in 2021, where I earned the "Knights of Nothing" flair for using an unscented soap (Southern Witchcrafts - Incorporeal).

I do not like Austere August, so when I found out there was a side-car contest to use a Stirling Mutton based soap, my stomach churned. As someone who's unable to not support Stirling Mutton, I slowly came to the realization that my fate included using the same soap for a whole month.

    So here we are.

Great shave. Everything clicked. This blade in this razor is just incredible. I really enjoyed the scent of Port-Au-Prince today.

Port-Au-Prince has always been "the scent that could have been great" to me. The lemongrass has always been a turn off, both because I'm not a fan of the smell, and also because it has given me a small amount of frag burn (I assume it's the lemongrass because it's a known common irritant, and vetiver is not).

The Ariana and Evans method of continuing to use soap even though it burns you in an attempt to "teach" your skin to grin and bear it seems to be working. No tinge anymore. My nose also might be learning to ignore the lemongrass, as today it came across as just good ol' Vetiver.

A slightly rushed shave, but I went into it knowing I could go quickly. I find Stirling to be incredibly easy to lather. It's more fun to add water slowly, but you can also just throw a bunch of water at it right up front and call it good, which is what I did today.

The 34C feels nice. Very similar to the Era level 3 which I've been using.

So far, after 6 shaves, I've been using an average of 2.6 grams of soap per shave. At this rate, I predict I'll have plenty of soap to make it through the month, but won't be surprised if the bottom of the tub starts peeking through at some point.

Well, maybe the whole "moar boar eats soap" thing is true? Today I used 4.2 grams of soap, which is more than the average so far this month of 2.63 (now bumped up to 2.86 grams after this shave).

And you know what? I would have liked more lather. There was plenty available, but not the copious amount that I'm accustomed to when using synthetic knots.

/u/saintbandicoot did an experiment with weighing soap before and after rinsing the tub. I'm a tub rinser (even when using the same tub all month), and never concerned myself with whatever gets rinsed down the sink.

That person took photos to show that they lost something like 3 grams of soap JUST by rinsing! Granted, they were using a soap base which is apparently known for going fast (Gentleman's Nod). I've never used that brand.

I recreated the experiment with Stirling, and I only lost 0.1 grams. So, basically nothing. Maybe it'd be 0.2 grams if I let the water evaporate a little bit before weighing... Either way, with a standard tub being 4 oz. (113 grams), it would take 565 rinses to deplete the entire tub.

Or, assuming 35 shaves out of a tub of soap, I'm rinsing 7 grams of soap down the drain during the life of the soap, which is .25 oz. So, maybe I'm wasting 1/16th of the tub by rinsing? This math is done with rounding up to .2 grams, so maybe I'm only wasting 1/32nd of the tub by rinsing assuming .1 grams per rinse.

So there you have it. I'm going to keep rinsing.

I thought I was done with any science in regards to rinsing/not rinsing, but /u/saintbandicoot pulled me back in. For the record, I'm a rinser. I think leaving lather in the soap tub and then putting the lid on is untoward. The following album contains sequential pictures from today's shave which I'll summarize below. https://imgur.com/a/AoQgJ3G

    1. Tub has been sitting for a day with the lid on. Weight = 148.5g
    2. Tub has been loaded from, and not yet rinsed. Weight = 145.7g
    3. Tub has now been rinsed, with some residual water on the surface. Weight = 145.7g
    4. Tub has been resting upside down to "drain"/dry for the duration of the shave. Weight = 145.6g

Although this experiment isn't perfect, I deduce that rinsing removes approximately 0.1 grams of soap. It could be higher or lower based on what's actually being weighed here (soap vs residual water), but I do think it's negligible either way.

It has been a while since I've used a BIC. Very close shave, but that's probably more due to using a Tech.

I loaded what I thought was a ton of soap, and it ended up just being on the high side of average (3.2g, average is 2.8g this month). Excellent lather as always with this base.

We're half way through the month, and I have to say this scent has grown on me quite a bit. The lemongrass used to throw me off, but now it either doesn't bother me, or I've learned to like it, or my nose has learned to ignore it. Either way, it's a great Haitian vetiver scent.

    What a great razor.

I purposefully loaded what felt like "less soap" today, and it still came out to 2.6 grams. The lather was ok, not the quality I'm accustomed to. My average is holding steady at around 2.9 grams per shave.

Whew! 3.6 grams today. Loaded it like it's a rental. The neat thing about this soap base (and others, of course) is that if you load more soap, the lather quality goes off the charts. Does it perform better? I say yes, sure. But more importantly, it LOOKS better. And that's what we're all here for -- good looking lather.

Very nice. This Damaskeene is particularly mild, and it's a joy to use. Good efficiency despite not much blade feel.

Used 4.9 grams of soap today, which is a lot. I don't use badger knots often so wasn't sure how much to load, but apparently I can dial it back a tad. Really nice lather, though.

Really good. I'm close to the end of this tub and wonder if maybe I'll keep pushing through until it's finished, even after August is over. I sort of doubt I will, since I have 4 Stirling samples queued up. I got Oro Valley (smells nice, but scent strength might be a tad low, we'll see during the shave), Haverford (I had a sample of this back in the day and it didn't click, but now it clicks), Nag Champa (ooo baby), and they threw in Margarita's in the Arctic.

Surprise balm kill today!!!! I've been working at this balm for what feels like forever. Although there was still some left in the bottom, the pump stopped picking it up.

The soap is getting near, too. I've already re-spread it once after hitting the bottom, and the bottom is starting to become visible again. I won't kill it before the month is over, but it'll be soon. I found reference online to an empty Stirling tub weighing 78 grams. If this is true, I still have a solid 42 grams of soap left, which will last me precisely 13 more shaves.

New synthetic knot that I got from Chisel & Hound. It's a really good synthetic, I like it! The handle is one of Rob's Finest, that's for sure.

I really like Barrister & Mann aftershave. Other aftershaves can either be drying, or overly moisturizing. B&M is just right. It doesn't leave any sort of oily film, but at the same time my skin feels great.

A nice end to Austere August. I never got tired of Port-Au-Prince, which says a lot. I used to not really like the scent because of the lemongrass, but I quickly learned to really enjoy it.

    Final Stats:

    • Total Soap Used - 98 grams
    • Average grams per day - 3.16
    • Lightest soap usage day - 1.6 grams (loaded light on purpose, otherwise there are a few 2.1 gram days)
    • Heaviest soap usage day - 5.5 grams

I found the weight of a Stirling tub online, and if it's to be believed I have about 26 grams of soap left in this tub. At my rate of 3 grams per day, I should have another 8 shaves in this tub. If it was 4 or something, I'd keep using it and kill it, but I'll save this kill for some other time.
