    Bonjour, Jeux de Savons!

    We're back, baby!

    • Brush: Rubberset 400-3 #Ancient #Hollow
    • Razor: Henkotsu Kamisori #Kamisori #Str8Snob
    • Lather: Hendrix Classics & Co - Roasted
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann - Cheshire
    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - Saint Julep

These lather games feel weird, instead of preparing to compete, I've sunk more hours that I'd like to count into preparing for their organisation and operation. I thought at least I'd be more relaxed this time when I can't really compete with u/RedMosquito (As an aside, did you know that his family wealth comes from shady GDR oligarchy circles? His grandpa ran the Rote Mücke Volksrasurfabrik MikroMatik in Magdeburg in the late 1970s and through most of the '80s. I started my oppo research before I was asked to join the organising committee, and I also have other juicy titbits), but it's still super exciting to experience the start of Lather Games. Big shout-out to u/Crisp_Mango for setting immediately a sky-high bar!

I can't wait to follow along in these games and talk about them in the podcast!

This soap sample is from u/EldrormR, and it's the first time I try a HC&C product.

    Challenge:

I've used all the types of razors on the list, but this kami was approved by the Chief Djustice himself.

Post Shave and Fragrance Relevance: They're all drinks. Coffee lather, Earl Grey tea post shave, Mint Julep frag. And I continue the drinks theme in the #photocontest.

    Don't have a Cow, Man!

    • Brush: Chisel and Hound Ambrosia Maple #Composite
    • Razor: Schick Type B Repeating Magazine Razor #Brassing #IllFuckingDoItAgain
    • Blade: Schick Vintage 20 Injector Magazine (2)
    • Lather: Wholly Kaw – Dulci Tobacco
    • Post Shave: Summer Break Soaps – Valedictorian
    • Fragrance: Tom Ford – Tobacco Vanille

Dulci Tobacco was my first vegan product by Wholly Kaw (The bison in the background of the SOTD pic have not been harmed in any way), and I love the scent of it. Sweet and gourmand, it's the starting point for a little tobacco scent excursion, followed by earthier, smoky Tobacco of Valedictorian, and the drier fuller Tobacco scent of Tobacco Vanille. This one sparked joy.

While it doesn't have the satisfying toast buttering sound of the GEM SEs, the Schick Type B is one of the coolest SE razors in existence. You basically get a year of shaving out of a full magazine, a total nerd snipe for a mechanical engineer like me.

For the #photocontest, I'm shooting for the Pets theme. Now, we don't have pets of our own (the closest I have to a pet is Djunior), so we had to go visit our tax payer-funded pets at the local zoo.

    AlmonMammothMonDay

    • Brush: Frank Shaving FR 0929 Pure Badger Shaving Brush 20 mm × 47 mm #Runt #WeDontNeedNoStinkingBadgers #Smoll
    • Razor: Karve Christopher Bradley aluminium, E plate #CNC #Rainbow
    • Blade: Big Ben Super Stainless (3)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth – Almond Leather
    • Post Shave: Declaration Grooming – Fake Yellow Light
    • Fragrance: Chatillon Lux – Gratiot League Square

Theme: Almond Leather (frequently auto corrected to Salmon Letters) is one of my favourite Mammoth scents. The combination of almond and leather absolutely shouldn't work. It should smell sickly sweet and desgoostang, but instead the two notes really build on each other. I'm honouring our champion u/RedMosquitoMM, who famously has the nose of a bloodhound and comes up with fantastic scent combinations and even better descriptions of them, by using the best three part scent progression that I have ever discovered. Almond Leather -> Fake Yellow Light -> Gratiot League square is so much more that the sum of its parts, and they play so well together that I rarely use them separately anymore. Mosquito, it was a pure pleasure following along your tour de force last year, once again, 👏👏👏

#photocontest: So. Royals. One of the themes is royals. What's happening here? Do the organisers of #photocontest realise that most of us don't live in the middle ages anymore? Royals are something we've guillotined or chased away a few centuries ago and made their houses museums. Anyway, I've used some non-kosher plastic money to have the late Queen Lizy join my SOTD pic.

    April Showers

    • Brush: Djundjila Brushworx – r/Wetshaving exclusive Barber Pole with Maggard G5 knot #FauxFur #PremiumPlastic
    • Razor: Wilkinson Sword – Wilkinson Razor #Dial #EightDaysAWeek #SelfSharpening
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Roam
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Roam
    • Fragrance: House of Mammoth – Shire 2

Sometimes, I really need some external nudge to realise things that should be obvious. I've always liked Roam, but I could never find a category in my mind for it. Then, looking through the themes, it jumped at me: Roam is a spring scent. It's the scent of camp site on a spring morning with dewy grass, mud in front of the tent's entrance, and the smell of countless camp fires so deeply infused in the tent and the wool blankets that they never stop smelling of it. To continue this image, I've added Shire: Once you've packed everything up and are back in the saddle, you leave the smoke behind, the morning sun dries the landscape and you get to cleaner grass and tobacco notes.

For the #science part of today, I've kept lab notes: I bowl lathered using precisely 1.02 g of Roam with 11 ml of water, I stropped the #SelfSharpening Wilkinson Sword Tuesday blade for 30 laps on the included strop, and I did three passes with the #Dial on the most open setting. I then forgot about the science during post application (failed to weigh the balm tub before), so I have to report a negative result there (Reminds me of fatigue tests on aluminium frames a friend of my ran. One of the conclusions was that the fatigue failure usually occurred in the research assistant before the frame and that the former needed to be rotated. Alas, I was alone in my bathroom, beside which a rotation of the participant would likely cause me a DQ.) Finally, two spritzes of Shire under the shirt, corresponding to 140 mg of product (2 significant digits only).

Summer Break Soaps has two scent spots dear to my heart: Valedictorian and Teacher's Pet. Both of these reliably put me in a good mood.

I'm shooting for the technology theme in the #photocontest, and I chose close-ups of this fun and ridiculously overengineered razor with explanatory text as medium. In the SOTD picture link, note that there are multiple pictures in the gallery, and that you can hover your mouse of each of them (or long-press on mobile) to see the explanations.

    • Post Shave: Pitralon – Swiss Pitralon
    • Fragrance: Axe – Dark Temptation

Ok, this should conclude my brush scavenger hunt with 10 hashtags. I will still fetch the missing 5 (#SHD, #Toll, #TexasPigStinkMassacre, #HorseSass (yes), and #Chonk), but that will just be for fun.

For the theme today, I got the shave stick in my neighbourhood pharmacy on clearance, and it's definitely mass produced. I kept the local shop + mass production theme for the relevant post and frag, too: The connection today is each software product is the best smelling product of its category in my neighbourhood. The scents do not really play all that well together: Palmolive has some generic fresh vaguely barbershop scent, Swiss Pitralon is a wonderful delicious pear scent and Axe Dark Temptation is a warm chocolate scent. While Pitralon and Dark Temptation unsurprisingly work together well (who doesn't like canned Williams pears with a hot chocolate coulis?), Palmolive's scent won't fit in.

Oh, would you look at that, my inner perfumer has been channelled: Williams pear with dark chocolate. Boom. The warm companion to Don Josè, another gourmand I adore.

    Olfactory Stacking Games

    • Brush: Viel-Long B0320921 Cachurro Horse Hair #HorseSass #Toll
    • Razor: Hoffritz Travel Slant #JetSetter #Unicorn
    • Blade: Astra (Blue) (1)
    • Lather: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Black Watch
    • Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Black Watch
    • Fragrance: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Black Watch

Stacking is hard, risky, and the best case scenario is, well, you get a stack. Still, this was fun, and 44 attempts doesn't seem too shabby.

I went with Black Watch, a recent favourite of mine for the theme today. Plum is an underused scent note IMO. Warm and sweet without being cloying. I also really enjoy using the Highland base, although I can't help but remember u/pppork describing it as greasy :)

Regarding the unicorn hashtag: I can't prove that this particular travel slant was made before 1971, and this particular model seems to have been made until the late seventies or early eighties, when they switched to the scalloped cap that we still know today from the Merkur 37C (Hoffritz are rebranded Merkurs), but this model was produced since the sixties. I think this should satisfy the hashtag rule since this razor is itself, or is at least interchangeable with and indistinguishable from, a unicorn by the hashtag's definition. Either way, this is a great little 4-piece razor that folds into a tiny 5x5 cm shiny box. Oh, and this was my first ever vintage, which I proudly showed off on r/wicked_edge back in the day.

EDIT: after u/enndeegee gave me a bad conscience about the #unicorn, I did some more digging. This razor in the exact packaging I have is was sold as a 1960s Hoffritz Travel Slant on Razoremporium.com

Regarding the #Toll tag, this razor is sold as a 57mm loft, but I measure it at a solid 62mm.

I'm shooting for the history theme of the #photocontest, specifically a piece of history of obsolete technology. The odd stamp-looking thing on the right in my SOTD picture is a pagination machine. Imagine yourself in the age before digital word processing and your job is to produce 1000 numbered raffle tickets and all you have is a photo copier. Or you are a clerk in charge of writing up a lengthy contract that is still being negotiated and its (type-written and carbon-copied) sections can still grow or shrink, but in the end it needs page numbers. Enter the pagination machine: This stamp has only one setting to choose, the revolution period, and then it counts. If you set the revolution period to 1, it'll start by stamping 1, then 2, 3, you get the picture (and it's literally in the picture, on the left side, where I used it to count my attempts at stacking). If you set the revolution period to 2, you can stamp your raffle tickets twice each, to have the sequence 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, ... so that you cat tear off half the ticket and use half for the raffle drawing and the other as a receipt for the participant. Neat, and obsolete now that you can just set a form field or page numbers in your word processor of choice and never worry about the pagination problem again.

    Fremen Friday

    • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts Papa Eld with Declaration Grooming B3 #SHD
    • Razor: Ever-Ready Natuar Angle (E-bar) #Twins
    • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE (5)
    • Lather: Abbate y La Mantia – Vulcano
    • Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Spiced
    • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Man Fire Power

Dune struck me as a vaguely fascist übermensch fantasy, so I stopped reading after the first book. Multiple people I respect tell me that the subsequent books get better, so I guess I should find out how the freedom fight of the Fremen continues some day.

Vulcano is clearly a spice scent (lots of pepper and anise), but not a warm scent like Spiced or a dry scent like Fire power. Vulcano is fresh and hot simultaneously (this is where the temperature-spiciness metaphor breaks down) and plays tricks on the mind. The post and frag relevance here that they show different aspects of spiciness.

On a side note, there's this ongoing and very much stuck discussion between u/semaj3000 and myself about whether spiced is a summer or winter scent, and my stance is firmly that the scent of mandarines, vanilla, and gingerbread spices (literally the scent of Santa's bag) can be nothing else but a Christmas scent. This morning, when I went to wake up my wife, the first thing she said was "Oh, you smell very nice, so summerly!" 🤬🤬🤬

Today's challenge caused me to reevaluate my recent choices. One or two years ago, my answer would have been easy: I like doing bike treks, organise big hog roasts, and automate stuff around the house with little robots. Well, my last hog roast and the last time I've touched a soldering iron was before Djunior was born, and I haven't carried a tent up the alps on my bike since last year. So what's my hobby now?

I realised with some horror, that over the last year, I've spent more than an hour per day on developping the DjudgePortal (it originally started for Austere August 2022), and since I'm not getting paid to do it, I guess I have to classify this activity as a hobby or reevaluate my life choices 😅. I also like photography and take it seriously enough that it can count as a hobby, I guess.

Speaking of photography, I'm shooting for the Literature theme of the #photocontest, specifically concentrating on section 28.VII.β: "Science Fiction, Non-Fascist, English Language" of my bookshelf. Although, I'm not sure whether Brave New World is categorised correctly, I can never really tell.

    • Razor: GEM Heavy Flat Top (G-Bar) #Twins
    • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE (2)
    • Lather: Maggard Razors – Tobacco & Leather
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth – Almond Leather
    • Fragrance: Maher Olfactive – Treachery

To get the challenge out of the way: my answer. The DQ thread is my main source of information and enablement when it comes to obscure shaving knowledge, recently primarily about straight razors.

This is the first time I've tried Maggard's Tobacco and Leather, and its scent is pretty much exactly what you'd expect. The leather note is quite strong, and reminds me of CBL Lavender and Leather, which I have on my roster for later this month. I randomly got the most perfect, drippy, slick-as-snot (using Brand Maggard's term for describing the slickness of Barbasol) lather right away. I'm not often that lucky with bases I'm not used to, and it left an excellent impression. Almond Leather's leather note is softer, but the plays really nicely with the scent of the soap.

Treachery is another first for me, and I chose it for the tobacco and almond notes to create a tobacco-leather <-> leather-almond <-> almond-tobacco triangle of scents (relevance of post and frag). It's a very rich scent with a very different tobacco note than the soap. I clearly smell vanilla and some spices (spoiler, there is no vanilla note 😅) but I can't pick out the whiskey, berries, cocoa, etc from the well-blended background. I'll have to remember giving this sample some love after AA, This might be a full bottle candidate.

Regarding the #Twins tag, I've used the E-Bar yesterday.

A few words about Maggard. It's definitely the place where I've left most of my wetshaving money, and it's not even close. I can't help but think of Maggard Razors as the home of wetshaving in a way. Last October, we had the opportunity to talk to Brad Maggard for an hour and a half and discuss all things wetshaving with him. Give it a listen, if you're looking for some entertainment (other than the Lather Games, of course) this weekend.

For #photocontest, I'm shooting for the masterpieces theme, with an hommage to Wes Anderson and his compulsive need for symmetry.

    ☠Death before Decaf☠

    • Brush: Zenith r/Wetshaving exclusive MOAR BOAR #Chonk #OldWorld
    • Razor: Gillette Goodwill #RegUS
    • Blade: Feather (DE) (2)
    • Lather: Catie’s Bubbles – Irish Coffee
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Leviathan
    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors – Sundrunk

Kitchen shave day! Yayy! I didn't have time to come up with another episode of Indiana Djundj again, but less pressure to shit post is a perk of being a djudge, so I don't feel to bad about it. I'm looking forward to browsing the SOTD thread and look at kitchen shaves before going to bed tonight.

So, this shave concludes the Brush hashtags with my last missing hashtag #Chonk easily filled by the MOAR BOAR. You can see in the picture that my MOAR BOAR brush has some gold lines where it shouldn't, it's because I broke it and tried to fix it Kintsugi style 😭. At least it's still functional. I'm still missing the #AllNatural razor hashtag, but not for long.

We are a half-Croatian household, so we have a nice Džezva for making Balkan-style coffee, and it has the perfect size for lathering with the MOAR BOAR brush, very much unlike Catie's Bubbles tiny diameter tubs. Lore has it that this is explained by the fact that Chris is a bowl latherer.

I really like Catie's Bubbles' soap base, and Irish Coffee is a delightful gourmand that always makes me happy, and I had a great kitchen shave with the heavy Goodwill and the chonky moar boar.

My relevant post and frag theme for today clashes hard: I guess every culture has their version of Irish Coffee and ours is Kafi Lutz. There are two kinds of occasions for it, the happy drunk one (e.g., après-ski in the bar at the bottom of the slopes, getting you happy and (Sun)drunk), and the sad drunk one (pouring your morning booze in your coffee in a vain attempt at hiding your alcoholism as in Leviathan picking up the coffee note and turning it into dark despair).

Regarding the #RegUS hashtag, here's some supporting evidence.

For the #photocontest, I am submitting this picture of me mid-shave. I am the #law after all.

    Musical Monday

    • Brush: APShaveCo Butterscotch w/ 24mm Tuxedo knot
    • Razor: Victoria 4 (6/8″, half hollow, round tip, carbon steel) #AllNatural
    • Lather: Declaration Grooming – Fake Yellow Light
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Paganini’s Violin
    • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co. – Ozark Mountain

This was a tough one, theme-wise for me. In previous Lather Games, I poured over the calendar the moment it got published, and I traded for whatever I needed to set it up to my liking. This year, at the time the calendar was published, the issue tracker of the portal had dozens of open tickets and I had to work on those instead of prepping and I didn't start planning my roster until Lather Games eve. The musical themed soaps in my den are BaM (Rhapsody, Paganini's Violin), Stirling (Glastonbury, Witchy Woman), Mammoth (Mindigo), WK (Rebelle), and DG (Night/Dayman, Fake Yellow Light) and all these artisans were really useful in other days. I managed to free up DG and still make today's theme whithout blocking the path to 30 soapers (I think).

This razor with its beautiful 100 years old #AllNatural horn scales completes my razor hashtag scavenger hunt for this year.

I'm leaning into the relevant post shave and fragrance rubric this year. In previous years, I always tried to somewhat match the scents in interesting ways, but this year's formulation of the rules encourages thematic links of any sort, and I'm having fun with it. Today's link is colour, all software today prominently features the colour yellow on the artwork (including the brush, since it's suspiciously soft for a hardware item), yet none is citrusy.

For today's challenge, I decided to share my business plan of becoming a soaper with only one scent, the scent of scents, pure Mousse de Saxe. This label shows the Musical Monday edition of my soap.

Obviously, my #photocontest submission today is #music themed.

It's silly hot here in south-western Switzerland right now and I can't wait to go to the beach and smell Montrose Beach while sipping a double Pelinkovac.

The relevant post and frag theme for today is trying to stay cool at the beach, a.k.a., summer: The beach is, well, the soap, Pitralon Polar with it's vaguely sporty scent and refreshing menthol is the cold drink, and Gravity with its floral, fruit and earthy notes is the scent from a well kept perfumed AC unit in a high end hotel lobby. Oh, that, and that they are colour coordinated for today's challenge.

The #photocontest theme is wild animals.

    • Razor: Bismarck 4/8″, hollow ground, square point
    • Lather: Haslinger – Salbei
    • Post Shave: Speick – Men Active
    • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co. – Boat Drinks

This razor is a vintage restored by Brad Maggard, so please dear djudicial colleague, check that Maggard hardware sponsor point box.

For the challenge, the most reverse lathering technique I could come up with is using the soap puck as a shave stick, and it worked remarkably well.

This Haslinger is the reformulated vegan version from a few years back, and potassium cocoate is the third ingredient (after potassium stearate, and sodium stearate), and I always get adequate lather from it. The sage scent (German: Salbei) is very light, but pleasant. I paired it with the relevant post Speick splash and frag Boat Drinks for the two things I associate with the soap: herbs (speick plant in thia case) and coconut base (main note in the frag).

In my youth and early twenties, I was an angry little punk (in the leather jackets wearing sense, not the Dirty Harry sense), and I despised Hippies. With all the cringy righteous anger of a middle class kid growing in a nice little town in Northern Switzerland, I blamed them for betraying the labour movement and paving the way for vulture capitalism with their "peace through weakness bullshit". I tattooed the barcode of my copy of A Clockwork Orange on my chest, got teargassed at protests, and wore T-shirts like the one in the NSFW SOTD pic. I've mellowed since then, and I feel both cringe and amusement thinking how young djundjila would have gotten in a tizzy looking at today's theme.

Today's theme: I'm covering both patchouli and incense (mostly patchouli, though, as far as I can trust my nose) with Glastonbury (a gift by the extraordinarily generous photodjudge u/Semaj3000), and I'm extending the incense theme with the post and frag.

This was a fantastic shave with a fantastic razor I pulled out after u/VisceralWatch talked about it yesterday. So smooth, so calm, so quiet.

For today's challenge let me loop back to the beginning of this and present the piece of art that is Hier kommt Alex by Die Toten Hosen. It's the signature song of a punk opera version of A Clockwork Orange called Ein kleines bißchen Horrorschau (= A Little Bit of Horror Show) in the late eighties and I think it's fair to say it's been one of the more influencial songs for German speaking kids of my generation.

Yay, the Geo Fatboy special! I've proposed today's challenge for Theme Thursday a couple times in my early days in this sub, but surprisingly it never got enough upvotes (I naturally suspect mod misconduct).

Like wetshaving ambassador and mixed bag Geo Fatboy, I used a large R 41 for this (He used the Grande, if memory serves, and this GS is just the stainless steel version of the same razor in the same form factor), but unlike him, I didn't stop after a single ATG pass and proceeded with XTG and WTG passes myself.

For today's theme, Union by Moon soaps get menthol levels right, IMO. It's distinctly cooling without ever crossing into unpleasant territory or causing teary eyes. The balm has a bit more (at least perceived) menthol, but still at nice levels. For relevant post and frag, I'm going for a complementary theme of the frigid barbershop followed by warming up again with a warm and spicy bay rum. u/IcyPooter definitely started feeling a bit warm with that frag.

Re: #FauxFur, the knot is sold as a synthetic horse hair imitation.

Half-way point! Crazy how fast this whooshes by. I'm celebrating this milestone by using my Frio 14.

All chypres in my den, Executive Man, Sellout, Platinum, are dupes of Aventus. I really should try Le Grand et le Petit Chypre someday, and explore this family a bit.

The relevant post and frag theme today is fruity, specifically pineapple-forward fruity with patchouli. On a side note, Tribute is a good illustration for how poor my nose is. It smells practically like yet another Aventus dupe to me 😅

Wettubing challenge is a bit tricky. I value privacy on the internet, sticking my face in a camera is where I draw the line, and recording a face shaving video without showing a face misses the point (i.e., is truly impossible in the context of the challenge). My recent favourite WetTubing star is u/MrTangerineSky for this performance, but the all time award goes to u/CosmoBarber for whatever this is. No way u/VisceralWatch could match that.

Let's start with the meme challenge.

Concorde was an hommage to a French Barbershop (it's UnObTaInIuM now), Seville is meant to evoke a Spanish barbershop, and Tabac is the scent of Opas barbershop, so the relevant post and frag theme here is ficticious European barbershops.

This was an early morning shave after a short night cut in half by the recording of a certain podcast 👀

I don't know in what way u/hawns tweaked the scent of La Forêt e Liguest to make it have "more butthole. I guess", but whatever it is, I'm here for it. This is a wonderful dark scent, with a good amount of oakmoss (not quite Varen level, but you get the idea. There's citrus, without changing the warm nature of the scent, strong vanilla, but not sweet. This is one of the (many) moments I wish I had u/RedMosquitoMM's nose and powers of scent description. u/hawns, u/ptheven_j, u/kenzycat, I can't thank you enough for making this set happen and thank you /u/wyze0ne for the hilarious artwork, this is definitely the collaboration of the year in my book 😘. I get unreasonably happy and giddy when I sniff this set and it was difficult to wait all the way to collaboration day to properly inaugurate it, but I'm happy I did. Thank you!

I thought I'd use this set together with my other LG winnings, so out came the beautiful LG21 WR2 to join in on the fun. This razor immediately became a favourite of mine, and it's my second-most used razor (N°1 being the Ockmock that I used for getting 100 shaves with a single GEM blade, that stunt skews the statistics).

Using these items makes me really proud of our community and the crazy extravagance that is the Lather Games. The thrill of participating is exhilarating (and I really miss it this year, but even just following the shenanigans from the djudicial bench I'm having a blast). Our wonderful sponsors who donate their own time, effort, and money to make amazing prizes are the cherry on top. Whether it's custom software like this set, the ROTY sets by u/rocketk455 or the custom set by u/mammothben, a custom hardware piece of jewellery by Wolfman James (who deleted his reddit accout AFAIK, or I would have tagged him), or any of dozens of prizes, these artisans elevate our competition to an insane level. Thank you, sponsors!

And then there's u/declarationgrooming, the exception that used to prove the rule. He didn't make good on the pledged prize last year.

    Osma is alright.

Oh, good old u/MajorMinceMeat and his Atlas Challenge. This is one of the crazier stories of our sub IMO: MMM (back then a daily shaver) decides one day to create this challenge for the non-daily shavers, hypes it to the max, and decides in the last moment that he has better things to do than dealing with it. Somehow, three years later, Atlas is still a thing, and yet again I'm finding myself trying to determine the best way to show Mighty Atlas shouldering his burden of tonsorial detritus in an SOTD picture. This is wild to me.

I narrowly avoided having to shave my head or something (legs are reserved for never skip leg day), because I almost forgot about the challenge, and my proof of participation shown in the SOTD picture is from the very last stroke of the first pass, i.e., the last chance for saving stubble of photographically relevant size.

Nocturne and Autumn Ash shave a lot of the same idea of autumn, a smoky harvest time scent (relevant post and frag), and they play very nicely together, but they are very different scents. It seemed frankly like an uninspired pairing in my spreadsheet, but now that I used it again, I kinda love the combo.

Interesting(?) titbit*: when googling "Autumn Ash" without "Southern Witchcrafts", the first hit I get is from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement showing the mugshot of a Sexual Offender/Predator called Autumn Ash.

The theme for today's #photocontest is light sources. The light source for this shot was my beaming grin after reading this.

    * Yes, titbit.

Ok, today's challenge was something. Admittedly, I am no expert in sock lathering, and as a novice sock latherist, I shouldn't expect excellent results on the first try, but I can't help but think that socks aren't the best lathering device. That, or I didn't use the right artisan sock.

Luckily, Lea cream is really easy to hydrate and immediately gets decent slickness like u/EldrormR's mum, and I still had a fine Weckoning. For today's relevant post and fragrance: How do we usually consume cream in the summertime? That's right, in ice form, and in a wafflecone. Boom, today's theme is an ice cream cone: Mentholated (ice) cream (cream), matching splash (frozen topping), and a whafflecone (cone).

Huh, this challenge sounded so much worse than it turned out to be. I produced Desert Vetiver past that came off like spackle. It's not easy to convey through a photograph how pasty that blob in the picture is, so let me add that it was annoyingly difficult to rinse off.

I currently live off of this box of software and just the B8 brush and MedWeck because my shave den storage is our guest room and we have guests. I think I would have included a second, safer razor if I had remembered that this challenge was coming, and I was a bit worried about attempting this shitty lather shave with an open blade, but in the end it was really a non-issue, and I had a surprisingly pleasant shave.

I bought Desert Vetiver late last year after my wife gifted me the bottle of Terre D'Hermès Eau Intense Vétiver, and it quickly became a favourite of mine. Next to one another, it's difficult for me to say whether I prefer the original TDH or the SV dupe.

Edit: I completely forgot that I had prepared some content for Dupelgänger Day last year, back before I joined the Lather Games Organising Committee. It was in my "2023-06-Lather_Games" folder, which became obsolete when we moved the games to July. Without further ado, I present u/Vtephen_j, u/phteven_j's Brother from a Viking mother (meant to be a grade A Lather Games Organising Committee member Dupelgänger back then).

My second prepared example turns out to likely be an alter ego, rather than a Dupelgänger. I believe I have uncovered u/merikus's secret second career as a singer of children songs all my voice analyses indicate that this is indeed his voice (compare to this sample to convince yourself).

Our interpretation of the classic Fougere scent will beckon you to inhale deeply again and again

This is my first time using Captain's Choice soap, even though I've been using a heavy copper Captain's Choice bowl for years (first almost daily, as a bowl lathering precision loader, but that got ruined for me in July 2021, when I started using boar brushes, and the fact that I had to soak them and that an undetermined amount of water becomes unavailable to the lather meant that loading wasn't precise anymore. I've since not only dropped precision loading, but bowl lathering altogether, except for samples).

Land Ho! is a green and sweet fougère, and reminds me a bit of Spearhead's Heather. The base is super soft (like, milksteak soft) and lathered without a hitch. Following sweet, happy Land Ho! with Varen is like swinging a big oakmoss hammer, and after two spritzes of Fougère Gothique, I mainly smell Varen with mushrooms.

Relevant post and frag theme: Fougère Friday

I'll use the challenge to hype our AA challenge:

    Days of Weckoning,
Your skill decides flair or blood,
    Austerity come.

Edit: And a little extra because I remembered my pirate themed title:

    August brews windward,
    Weckoning ~~day~~ be upon us,
    Austere souls beware.

Leg Wecking Day (oh, and Berries)

    • Blade: Kismet Rostfrei, Polymer beschichtet (6)
    • Lather: Abbate y La Mantia – Don Jose
    • Post Shave: Abbate y La Mantia – Don Jose
    • Fragrance: Abbate y La Mantia – Don Jose

So yeah, bananas are berries, Don Josè is banana, coconut, and menthol (in that order), and me trickholing this should make djudging my post and frag relevance maximally efficient.

Now, today wasn't ideal for three reasons: we have guests at home, it's lather games podcast recording night, and it's travel day for Djunior and me. So this is how the last hours before leg day unrolled:

The guests staying over are a couple with their 7 month old baby in the guest room, a.k.a. Djunior's room. So everything has been a bit hectic and improvised, tiring and happy in the last few days. The evening before leg day was our last dinner, and it's time for me to come clean, because there's no way that I record a podcast in the living room and shave my legs (two separate activities) before taking the train with Djunior without our guests noticing in such a crowded and intimate setting.

Djundjila, at the dinner table: "BTW, don't be surprised, but I'll get up at 03:00 to record a podcast in the living room. I'll try to keep volume down not to wake baby Guest Baby" Guest Wife: "Oh interesting, what kind of podcast?" DJ: "The weekly Lather Games podcast" Guest Husband: "What are 'Lather Games'?"

A lengthy discussion, including a den tour, ensued. It turned out that Guest Wife had been silently wondering about the large number of weird cosmetics in the main bathroom and had unsuccessfully tried to figure out what my wife might be doing with "Tabac", "Haverford", or "Massacre of the Innocent".

By the time the discussion ended, we were tipsy and it was three hours before I had to get up again for the podcast recording. I got in a solid 2.5 hours of sleep before waking up sleepy, but mostly sober. During prep, I realised that our special guests, the djudges of the photocontest, all overslept and I was really jealous of them.

By the time recording was finished, the sun was up and birds were chirping, and I really wanted nothing but to go to sleep, but it was fucking leg day. (Mandatory before pic (Safeish for work) )

So I smushed about a table spoon of Don Josè in my lather bowl, grabbed the big Мужской Материк brush and sat down on the edge of the bathtub to lather up, following u/newtothethis's advice to work in quadrants (thanks!).

I felt very proud with my genius decision to use the Sextoblade. I had shaved my left leg for Atlas shaves one and a half years ago, and I knew that even open comb safety razor clog when shaving full length leg hair, and for the first leg, everything went well. Slow, but no blood. By the time I reached the second leg, I was cocky and went fast with the commensurate result (blood, NSFW). Nothing that a styptic pencil couldn't stem, but I felt less smug at this point. The final result is disturbingly smooth (Safeish for work). I later found that I had missed a good 2×4 cm patch on my left knee, a blatant violation of the challenge rules which I corrected with a Gillette Goodwill having already packed my Weck for the trip. I attribute the oversight to sleep deprivation. By the time I had finished, Djunior was up, and it was time to get breakfast, get packed, and get on the train. It was the beginning of a loooong day.

BTW, I'll be away from my den for the rest of Lather Games, and I had to pack a pretty ridiculous amount of shave wares as a result.

This ADP set was a Christmas gift from my wife a few years back, and she mostly bought it because she likes the scent. I think it's the fresh, clean citrus that she likes. Historically, it's definitely the set that has gotten me the most compliments, although I think that Desert Vetiver is catching up.

Alas, today I'm not going to get any compliments, I'm currently traveling with Djunior while she is on a work trip. Djunior couldn't care less about how I smell as long as I read him dinosaur stories and help him fight the T-Rex with a fire truck.

For relevance in post and frag: as far as I can tell, the Barbiere line of shave products corresponds to the Colonia line of fragrances, and they smell very similar: fresh citrus and florals.

For the challenge, here, have a bowl of my best w/e lather to laugh at.

    • Lather: Natural Skincare Hampshire – Unisex Shaving Soap No. 3
    • Post Shave: Spartium – Meštar
    • Fragrance: Creed – Wind Flowers

The relevant theme for today's post and frag is gifts as an extension of the daily theme.

The lather is a gift by the very generous u/Semaj3000. This soap seems to be a modern alternative to Mitchell's Wool Fat in that is has the same skin feel, but lathers like a modern soap. The light lavender scent is pleasant, and the soap reminds me that my skin seems to love lanolin. The green and earthy Meštar was a gift by the very generous u/VisceralWatch two years ago, and I suspect it may have originally been a git from u/Sapat1 to veedubs. I've never received a frag gift from a Lather Games participant (I choose to believe that this deplorable state is caused by me being the lone Helvetic participant and nobody can legally ship frags to me at a reasonable price), so I went with the next best thing, a gift from my Lather Games fan club, a.k.a. my inlaws. My sister in law gave me this bottle on our last visit after we decided that it smells better on me *. The scent is marketed towards women, but I really enjoy the prominent pink pepper note (which doesn't exist, apparently, but I'm convinced I smell it) on a base of light florals.

For today's challenge, I would like to thank the participants of these LG and point out their kindness. The Games had to be postponed to July because I didn't finish the portal on time, and even though this is a major pain in the butt given the proximity to Austere August, Sample September, TabOktoberfest, and BBS November, turning the second half of the year into a 5 month monoblock of special months, absolutely nobody gave me any grief about it. Thank you!

    * She didn't give me the decant shown in the SOTD pic, but the full bottle. I decanted a bit so as to not travel with the full bottle this week. (Proof of bottle possession)

The smush for today is from u/MrLamper1. He used to be a regular here and sent me a treasure trove of samples in the winter 2020/2021 and this is the third year in a row that I'm getting a Lather Games day theme thanks to that box 😊

The warm vanilla forward scent immediately out me in a Christmas mood, but my mid got less festive when I started figuring out the geometry of shaving with and open blade one-handedly. It was quite the puzzle, and I even knowing it's possible from watching shave and butcher, a simple wtg pass on the right cheek with the Weck in my left (non-dominant) hand had me cursing the Lather Games Challenge Planning Committee. I did end up getting three passes without major incident, but I can already feel a bit of irritation. Oh well.

Dickens, Revisited is my second favourite Christmas scent after Seaforth! Spiced, and it's much more gourmand than the soap. Where The Night Before still has some green herb or evergreen notes, Dickens is all warm cookies. It's so warm and gourmand that Santa Noir almost smells fresh and aromatic by comparison.

For my fellow Djudge: "challenge" is a yes and the relevant post and frag theme is Christmas.

    Wild Card Wednesday

    • Brush: My Left Hand
    • Razor: Weck Sextoblade Med Prep
    • Blade: Kismet Rostfrei, Polymer beschichtet (4)
    • Lather: Thomy – Thomynaise Light
    • Post Shave: Sandoz – Ecofenac Lipogel

So, this shave wasn't good and I blame scrub police department commissioner u/Enndeegee. See, I'm traveling with Djunior right now, and since I like to travel light, I thought I'd just steel some stuff in the bathroom where we stay and it'll be fine. I had already found the perfect lather object, this decorative soap sculpture of a flower. I mean sure, I'd look like an asshole for lathering on it and ruining it, but that's the beauty of traveling with a two year-old: I could just blame it on an accident with Djunior who likes to touch pretty stuff. In comes u/Enndeegee with an additional last minute WCW rule: If you use a grooming product, any grooming product as your lather, you're a scrub. So I went looking for an alternative. There was a well organised medicine cabinet with some promising leads like after sun lotion and mosquito repellent, some very promising vaseline, paraffine, glycerin mix, but those are all dangerously close to grooming products. I did find an excellent aftershave gel, though. Next, the cleaning supplies: The most promising candidate was the organic, biodegradable bath cleaner, but when I read that it can be corrosive to certain metals, I feared about my pristine Weck Sextoblade Med Prep and moved on to the kitchen, and as of the writing of this, nobody has used mayonnaise yet. Phew.

Mayo is not good lather. It's greasy and not slick at the same time, and I was tempted to wash it off with soap, but I was worried u/Enndeegee might consider that an unsanctioned use of a grooming product as post shave, so I didn't and followed it up with the Ecofenac postshave pain relief, with has a surprisingly pungent smell. For the frag, I found a tester of some French edt and used it and u/Enndeegee can fuck off if he also requires non-grooming fragrances.

The relevant post and frag theme here is that everything is stolen from our hosts.

I'll come back and add the challenge, just posting this before someone posts a mayo shave.

Edit: Den Tour. Fuck. I'm not in the same canton as my den. I know I'm a Djudge and I should have remembered that this challenge would come up, but I forgot. It is lather games, so I'm traveling with pretty large travel den by non-hobbyist standards, but that's not what anyone is interested in. I do have a pretty decent database of all shaving items I've used since fall 2020, so that's the best I can do right now, I think. Welcome to the accountant's den tour/inventory of everything I've used in the replies to this comment.

    Lavendursday

    • Brush: AKA Fashion Olive Wood with 26 mm Maggard knot
    • Razor: Weck Sextoblade Med Prep
    • Blade: Kismet Rostfrei, Polymer beschichtet (4)
    • Lather: CBL Soaps – Lavender & Leather
    • Post Shave: Chatillon Lux – Pure Lavender
    • Fragrance: Zoologist Perfumes – Sloth

I wanted to begin this SOTD post writing that this is my first outdoor open blade shave, but then I remembered that of course I shaved on a construction ground scaffolding with a 3/8" straight for last year's outdoor challenge. Well, this year is much more comfortable, I can shave on the terrace under the vine-covered pergola in my parent's garden. I think last time I did anything questionable in this garden was when I was still in high school over two decades ago, and it was good to give the nosy neighbours a refresher (didn't stop doing questionable things, but moved out of my parents' house to do them elsewhere).

For today's relevant post and frag, today's software is all linked by being lavender-centric. CBL's Lavender & Leather is sharp aromatic lavender, almost grassy with a leather note similar to HoM's Almond Leather's. In typical CBL fashion, the scent on this soap is strong and the lavender really hits you in the nose. Chatillon Lux' pure lavender is a softer, more floral lavender scent, and I enjoy pairing it with Lavanille usually, but I've already used BaM and I'm going for 30 soapers. Sloth opens with a sweet floral lavender, and then turns into a sweet, fruity scent (I'm assuming those are the açai berries) as it dries down. For my fellow djudge, this means that the fragrance theme was satisfied for at least 25 minutes and becomes sus thereafter, but that's after the soap and splash have long evaporated, so this should count).

Overall, the shave went well, but the small hand-held mirror from Spearhead's khaki set is only barely large enough to be useful, and my open blade game isn't up to u/Marquis90's level where he can shave mirrorlessly while enjoying a lake-shore vista. Maybe next year I can do it without a mirror, too.

    Frugal Friday

    • Brush: Shitty clipped boar
    • Razor: Wilkinson Sword Classic
    • Blade: Wilkinson Sword (2)
    • Lather: Vitos – Super Extra Coco
    • Post Shave: I Am – Aftershave Lotion
    • Fragrance: adidas – Dynamic Pulse

It was the best of shaves, it was the worst of shaves. That the Wilkinson Sword razor is surprisingly good and punches way above its weight class is a well established fact by now, but Vitos Extra Super is a real surprise (to me) star in this setup (I shouldn't be surprised, I guess, after all it's both extra and super). Even with this shitty clipped boar brush of which I bought three in spring of 2021 as backup for Lather Games (it was back in the 30 brushes bonus point era, and I wasn't confident I'd have time to make enough of my fimo brushes), whipping this soap into a creamy, shiny, and slick lather is almost too easy. There must me some downside to Vitos soap, but I didn't find it (provided you are OK with coconut scents). If I remember after Austere August, Sample September, and TabOktoberfest, and I still have the energy for a prolonged period of restricted software choice, I might go a few weeks with this to see if it's drying my skin or something. Not sure I can handle 60 Vitos Coconut shaves in BBS November, but maybe 30?.

The brush is a disgrace, though, and the clipped bristles are like poky little needles. These were silly cheap (see below), but I still overpaid. I didn't bother cleaning this piece of shit and trashed it as is after I was done. I'll make sure not to have any of these in my den come next Frugal Friday.

For my fellow djudge, the relevant post and frag theme is frugalily, with the items selected for this shave being those of the lowest price density in my den. I've also added the prices of the hardware items. There is a potential doubt about the razor since I own a cheap Soviet plastic razor (from Lithuania pre fall) but I couldn't find pricing nor convincing inflation calculators for soviet rubles. I didn't insist because if soviet rubles were anything like GDR Aluchips, everyone had a lot of them and you still couldn't buy half the things you wanted, so the point seems moot.

For today's challenge, the answer is "very", and the photo is linked in the title.

    Product price density Assuptions

    Dirty Forest Floor Day

    • Brush: AKA Fashion Olive Wood with 26 mm Maggard knot
    • Razor: Weck Sextoblade Med Prep
    • Blade: Kismet Rostfrei, Polymer beschichtet (5)
    • Lather: Proraso – Sandalwood
    • Post Shave: Taylor of Old Bond Street – Sandalwood
    • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co. – Sandalwood

I can't get on the numbers train. Proraso red smells like a forest floor, just 100% twigs and dry rot. The TOBS gel and Stirling edt smell a lot cleaner, thankfully 😅

The relevant post and frag theme is Sandalwood.

For today's challenge, my money for the photocontest is on u/gcgallant for the gin and tonic shot or the flower shot, for fof on u/RedMosquitoMM because he writes with so much authority that his competitors agree to use his posts as scent references, and I have too much inside knowledge to opine publicly on the LG lead and I think that [REDACTED] will win with their consistently high quality posts with a greatly dose of pleasant shenanigans. One post in particular, [REDACTED], shows everything that makes Lather Games great❤️.

    Bon Voyage!

    • Brush: Мужской Материк

    • Lather: Summer Break Soaps – Teacher’s Pet
    • Post Shave: Ralon – Sport

Oh wow, so LG 2023 are a wrap. Where did July go so fast? This year, the tunnel vision phase of the games started in March for me, when work on the portal picked up, and when the actual games started, I could actually take a load off and catch up on sleep and non-internet friends. I was still quite stressed out for most of the games because I expected that a critical and overlooked bug, server failure, or the like in the portal may show up any moment and ruin my day, but as the weeks moved past and the portal did its job as intended, I started to relax and enjoy the games.

I want to thank the participants who with their energy and creativity make the games into this happy and mischievous monument to our community. Of course I'm also a bit worried about the future of r/wetshaving and the Games, with Reddit firmly on the path to terminal enshittification, numerous fellow Redditors deleting their profiles in protest, and opening rifts between different factions here, but I'm hopeful that, however painful the transition ahead, we'll come out the other end as one community with the core of this tradition intact.

To today's shave, I live in 🇨🇭, my razor comes from 🇦🇹, the brush from 🇷🇺, the splash from 🇭🇷, the frag from 🇫🇷, and the soap from the 🇺🇸. A fully international shave for today's challenge, and the relevant post and frag category is that everything I used today is some shade of Red.

I borrowed the frag from my wife, and it's one of my favourites on her. A warm spicy amber scent, it pairs really well with Teacher's pet, playing against its warm sugar note and rubbing against the bright tart apple. Ralon sport smells like Rakija with menthol and is here purely, but the scent evaporates in 12 seconds.
