    June 1, 2024 - Bonjour, Lather Games!

    • Brush: Yaqi Surf
    • Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing - Merica #CNC
    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Zingari Man - The Master
    • Post Shave: Clubman After Shave Lotion

Excited to be apart of my first Lather Games. I first started posting in r/wetshaving last year in around August. I would read and hear about LG, but never really understood what it was or why it was talked about so much. Not sure how involved I can get with Daily Challenges, but I have soap/cream set up for everyday.

Today’s theme being using an artisan that I’ve never tried before, and Zingari man was the first artisan that popped into my mind. u/Eructate sent me a generously sized smush that I split in half and can use the other half when my respiratory illness subsides.

This scent was incredible and I think it could easily be a daily driver for me. It’s described as a dark barbershop and the spices are very nice. The slickness and protection was ridiculous and I didn’t need to put much thought into building the lather. I got very little feedback from Clubman which can tend to light me up if I have a rough shave.

I did not attempt the Daily Challenge, but my trusty CNC machined YMP Merica did an awesome job as always.

Cheers to this month everybody, may the biggest shaving nerd win!

    June 2, 2024 - Ahoy, Lather Games!

    • Brush: Yaqi Surf 22mm
    • Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing - Merica #CNC
    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Barrister & Mann - Bay Rum
    • Post Shave: Clubman After Shave Lotion

I am house sitting at the moment, thus I could not use my Old Spice today, but u/BostonPhotoTourist Bay Rum is very good. My vintage Seaforth! mug hopefully played into the nautical theme today for some extra flair, pizzazz perhaps. I slathered on my Old Spice deodorant today as well, I smell like a sailor that just left a barbershop.

As for u/Priusaurus, I commend your dedication to the Lather Games and you thoroughly educated and entertained me on the history and importance of the Old Ironsides this morning. Never thought I would watch a grown man play with toys in a bath tub and be entertained, so I'll give you that much.

    June 3, 2024 - Where's the Beef?

    • Brush: Rubberset 400 w/ Maggard Synthetic #FRANKENBRUSH
    • Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing - Merica
    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Murphy & McNeil - Gael Laoch Orange
    • Post Shave: Proraso - After Shave Stone
    • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Barrbarr Splash

Today we must all ponder the question: Beef, where art thou? In my case today, our beloved beef tallow is still there with the addition of "Duck Fat Potassium Hydroxide" in Murphy & McNeil's Gael Laoch Orange, an homage to Creed's Viking Cologne. I actually blind bought this tub and its a very nice scent. However, I think this Aon base is one of the better bases I've ever used in terms of slickness. I am ready to engage in verbal warfare with anybody who disagrees.

Today was exactly my fourth time ever using alum, but have never used Osma specifically. I can't tell yet if it makes any difference for my routine or not yet, but it does feel nice applying the block tactilely.

I definitely like onions more than alum, that's for damn sure. A robust fragrance, antimicrobial, and improved skin appearance? Sounds like u/OnionMiasma needs to cash in on this new wetshaving breakthrough and make some onion scented aftershaves and balms. PM when you are ready to send me my royalty checks.

    June 4, 2024 - K.I.S.S.

    • Brush: Omega 10077 #HOLLOW
    • Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing - Merica
    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Proraso - Coarse Beards (Red) Cream
    • Post Shave: Fine Accoutrements - American Blend Splash

Sandalwood is the only scent described in Proraso Red. For a $10 tube of cream, I really like this scent and can see why it is a staple for many people. I personally like soaps better, but the price, performance, and scent of this is pretty good.

As for the challenge today, I don't think I've been wetshaving long enough for a soap base to be discontinued. I have tried samples of B&M's Reserve base and always liked it, so I would probably say Reserve. However, my current favorite base is definitely Summer Break Soaps base. I love the firmness of the soap itself and the shaving properties are excellent. The post shave slickness is incredible and it holds water super well and develops a nice thick layered consistency that offers great protection. Good job to u/rocketk455 and anybody who else helped make this base.

Chesire is a supposed to replicate the smell of Earl Grey tea and I think it does so very well, but I am not exactly a tea type of guy. Lather was great regardless and got to take my 921-M for a test drive and it was an absolute treat. I hate to say it, but it may be better than the Merica.

    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Mike’s Natural Soaps - Vetiver
    • Post Shave: Clubman - After Shave Lotion

Thank you again u/Tetriside for the smush. Great soap and the scent of this one reminded me exactly of those maple nut candied peanuts. Also the first time ever trying Mikes Natural Soaps and it lathers very easily, but thought it was rather thirsty which I don’t mind.

The 921-M is easily the best razor I’ve tried to date. I actually love the stock handle and works perfectly for me. Yaqi markets this brush as having a 47mm loft.

I’m still healing from the Feather and Barbasol debacle the other day, so the idea of one ATG pass would be rather foolish. All of my growth is in the goatee area too, which is sensitive. So that would have been a nightmare. Sorry GeoFatBoy….

    • Brush: Rubberset 400 w/ Maggard Synthetic
    • Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing - 921-H
    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Maggard Razors - Barbershop
    • Post Shave: Old Spice - Indian

This barbershop scent by Maggard has a very nice and clean smell, and I was very surprised by how good the lather was. As a college student, I don't have much money to make huge purchases, but it has probably been Yates Precision because I've bough two razors from them in the last 7 months. However, the knot, soap, and splash I used today was all from Maggards!

ETA: Was in a rush today to get this post done, but have to give thanks to u/Eructate for the smush!

    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: DentonMajik - Mayberry Man
    • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Barrbarr Splash

I have a sample of Mayberry Man which has somewhat recently become unobtanium. I try to keep myself from using it, but it is shave soap and needs to be used. Thankfully the samples DentonMajik provides are generous and I can keep using it. Thought today would be a perfect day for it. Barrbarr was a perfect finish as always.

As for today's quiz, I did a lot better than I thought I would with a 6/32 or 18%. That was tough for me lol

Kind of messed my lather today with this Cerberus smush, but the scent was pretty darn good. Definitely had some sweetness, slickness, and maybe a little smokiness to it and was very unique. Thanks to u/Tetriside for sending the smush. It was one of those soaps I’ve read and heard a lot about but never had the chance to try!

Today’s song pick for me will be Right Here, Right Now by Fatboy Slim. If only I’d used a Fatboy to shave today, but I don’t own one anymore. 921 did great though!

    June 11, 2024 - BossHoggins10 Brings May Flowers

    • Brush: Omega 10077
    • Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing - 921-M
    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann - Le Grand Chypre
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann - Le Grand Chypre Splash
    • Fragrance: Tom Ford - Eau de Soleil Blanc EdT

Today's Theme: When I made my Lather Games Calendar, I asked the judges if B&M Le Grand Chypre would count as a spring scent. Fair enough, the product description does not explicitly state it is Spring scent or "prominently floral".

However, as I was mowing and listening to the Lather Games Recap today, they emphasized to read themes and challenges carefully, insinuating this month is a matter of semantics. Cool, I can play that game.

Well since B&M LGC does feature some floral notes and would work for today's challenge, I figured I would make LGC "prominently feature floral, grassy... accords. These beautiful flowers in my yard caught my eye and figured I would pick up some mowed grass while I was at it.

I took a shower, dried off, and started creating my "product", soap featuring floral and grassy accords. It lathered up beautifully and smelled exactly like what the judges are looking for. Even when I applied and shaved with the lather, it was a glorious experience. I'll take my points for hitting the theme today.

Todays Challenge: See my above SOTD photo. My Tom Ford fragrance beautifully matched the rest of my gear. I did not decant the fragrance because that would require pouring, not spraying, according to Merriam Webster.

Sponsor Highlight: Not much can be said about Yates Precision Manufacturing that I have not said already. I probably have the most shaves logged with Yates razors in the last 5 or 6 months here in r/wetshaving. Jake Yates is a stand up guy who knows how to design and manufacture an incredible razor.

User doesn't believe judges when they tell him LGC isn't a grassy or floral accord. User then mows the yard, takes some grass clippings and a few flowers and mixes it into LGC to make it a more grassy and floral accord. Gets a decent shave.

    June 12, 2024 - CREAM

    • Brush: Omega 10077

    • Lather: Proraso - Eucalyptus Oil & Menthol Shaving Cream
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Hygge Balm
    • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Barrbarr Splash

Today's Theme: Today I used Proraso Green in a tube, which is explicitly stated as their cream. I actually got a really nice lather and decided to full Italian with the Omega brush as well. I was so happy I remembered Proraso was a cream because I would not have to use Barbasol again, cue the Geto Boys.

Today's Challenge: Here is a small album of my den. I try to keep things simple as much as I can, but realized I have a lot more shit than I thought I did. Oh well....

Not crazy about the menthol, but damn for $10 tube of cream, it is pretty good. I've been adding a lot of water to it and it gets really slick. Using some cold water and Skin Bracer to make myself shiver today!

Today's Challenge: I had to do a paste job today. Quite easily the shittiest lather I’ve put on in a long time. The lather couldn’t even rinse off the razor properly. June 16, 2024 - Father’s Day

    • Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing - 921-M
    • Blade: Gillette - Nacet
    • Lather: Proraso - Eucalyptus Oil & Menthol Shaving Cream
    • Post Shave: Clubman - After Shave Lotion

Today's Theme: Believe it or not, I was born after 1908, so Proraso was a perfect choice for today. I’ve been using it a decent amount for the Lather Games and I’ve been enjoying it a lot.

As for Father’s Day, my dad passed about 2 and half years ago. He had chronic health issues related to the military and his own personal choices (e.g. smoking). When I was growing up, as most teenagers do, start to become annoyed with their parents because my dad wasn’t perfect, but nobody is.

As his health started to decline over the last year of his life, I really started to try and make an honest effort to be closer to him. We had a vacation planned to California, but his health landed him in the ER for a couple days. Miraculously, he got good enough to meet us out from the Midwest and we got to visit Yosemite together. This was kind of a defining moment for us because we both kind of opened up a little bit to each other, which neither of us were accustomed to.

Fast forward 8 months, I’m leaving for class in the morning and he wishes me a happy birthday as I walk out the door. He could hardly breathe, but he still managed to tell me happy birthday. Later that day, he was admitted to the hospital and succumbed to his cancer a couple weeks later. He was intubated, so the happy birthday wish was the last thing I ever heard him say. A testament to a father’s love in spite of his own acute troubles.

I hope all the dads, step dads, grandpas, male legal guardians, and fatherly figures all get celebrated duly today. I’ve learned a lot about my dad after his death and he was a much better man than I ever knew. He had his own issues but he always did his best to take care of my siblings, his grandchildren, and I. Remember to hug the men in your life while you still can, this shit goes by much too fast.

    Today's Challenge: No thanks.

    • Blade: Gillette - Platinum
    • Lather: Proraso - Eucalyptus Oil & Menthol Shaving Cream
    • Post Shave: Mennen - Skin Bracer

Today's Theme: According to Proraso's website, Proraso Green is "cruelty-free and no ingredients of animal origin", so I am taking their word for it. Used a synthetic brush instead of my Omega today to let the judges know I mean business on vegan day.

Today's Challenge: As a lot of our loved ones know, we can be a quirky bunch. Obsessing over new soaps, razors, buying the latest scents, and all the fun that come with traditional wet shaving. My girlfriend has been totally cool with it up until today. Normally, when I shave in front of her, I will just whip up a quick lather on my face and call it a day. However, today was different.

As I was scrolling r/wetshaving this morning, she asked about the subreddit and asked why I look at other people shaving and read about it. Nothing I could say would make any logical sense to her, so I did not even try. I told her I have been doing daily challenges to win fake internet points and then asked "Are you feeling okay?" I brushed it off and then told her today was a knee lather challenge instead of face lathering. She then became very concerned for me and I saw her pick up the phone. I knew this would not be good.

Without hesitation I ran into my bathroom, locked the door, and busted out my shaving gear. As soon as I started my knee lather, I heard BANG BANG BANG and the sirens going off. My girlfriend doesn't realize how important these fake points are to me. Cops were yelling, banging on the door, and crying for me to stop, but I continued the lather. I'm still locked in my bathroom and do not plan on coming out anytime soon.

    June 18, 2024 - RIP in Pieces

    • Brush: Yaqi Surf 22mm
    • Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing - 921-H
    • Blade: Feather - New Hi Stainless x2
    • Lather: K Shave Worx - Bitter Peach
    • Post Shave: Clubman - After Shave Lotion

Today's Theme: Thank you to u/Eructate for the K Shave Worx Bitter Peach smush. Thankfully it was generously sized because I want to give it another shot.

Today's Challenge: Why am I still getting irritation? I have super duper über thick wiry facial hair growth. It is extremely tough to cut through and every method of shaving thus far has proved ineffective. It is like cutting metal. My new routine consists getting together the best gear known to man.

I start out by stropping Feather blades on my jorts because I find that Feathers need just a little more refinement. When I say Feathers, I mean it. I read that using shims is a super good idea to get more aggressiveness to shave my ultra wiry hair, so why not use an Feather that has been professionally stropped? Hopefully using a razor with a 0.040" blade gap and positive blade exposure will be enough to hack down my inhuman growth.

I whip up my lather into a creamy, thick, dense, voluminous and yogurty consistency and apply it. I know my lather isn't the problem because this is normally how I see people build lathers on YouTube, they must be experts otherwise they wouldn't post videos.

I always do WTG, XTG, and ATG with the hottest water out of the tap to rinse the razor. I have to use a lot of pressure to really cut down the hair even with two blades and still had a lot of tugging. I finished off my shave with a small amount of Clubman and it burnt so so sooo badly, but it felt good because I’m a closeted masochist. Can anybody help me figure out why I get razor burn, irritation, and a super dry face afterwards? I am at my wit's end with this shitty, dumb, old man style of shaving.

Today's Theme: Merrow of Clare is described as "a refreshing light sea breeze of aquatics and citrus". To me it smells exactly like an ocean or a lake. The base note of musk is very apparent in this one.

Today's Challenge: I don't have the time to go for a full fledged hike today, but I did manage to get a quick shave in on my deck overlooking the yard. It is weird shaving without a mirror, but it was actually very pleasant. Hopefully I did u/Old_Hiker proud.

    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Murphy & McNeil - Green Man (Fougère)
    • Post Shave: Barrister & Mann - Le Grand Chypre Splash

Today's Theme: Green Man (Fougère) is described as "an earthy & green fougere with dark undertones that may invoke the feeling of deep, shadowed forest". This soap has a killer base even if you mess up the lather, like I did. I added way too much water. Please see my limerick below

    Today's Challenge:

Green Man soap is extremely slick

Even when lathered up like a prick

    Next time I lather

    Up this great soap

I shall give the brush a proper flick

Today's Theme: Shout out to u/bmac92 for the smush. Of the few gourmand/sweet scents I've tried, this is definitely the best. The base is absolutely killer, probably one of the better bases I've tried. This is a sweeter scent that I would consider buying a tub of.

Today's Challenge: I didn't have the courage to pull out my shaving gear to the kitchen and tell my family what I've been up to this month. They don't need to know....

    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Barrister & Mann - Reserve Spice

    • Fragrance: Old Spice EdC

Today's Theme: Thank you to resident Spice Lord u/cowzilla3 for creating a giveaway back in January of some Old Spice dupes. Reserve Spice was probably my favorite of the bunch and the soaps opened up my eyes to the beauty of Old Spice. I've picked up a few different Old Spice splashes, use the Classic scent deodorant, and now have the Old Spice EdC because cowzilla3 and his giveaway. Despite his hijinks and cantankerous shenanigans during the Lather Games this month, I owe him my thanks.

Today's Challenge: I think Spearhead Shaving Company would be my top pick for the next r/wetshaving exclusive. I personally have yet to experience exclusives as I'm still pretty new to this community, but I would be the first in line for this one.

June 25, 2024 - Christmas in July, but in June

    • Brush: Yaqi Surf 22mm
    • Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing - 921-M
    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Stirling Soap Company - Christmas Eve
    • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Barrbarr Splash

Today's Theme: Thank you to u/bmac92 for the generously sized smush of Christmas Eve. I have never tried any Christmas scents in the wetshaving world and this is really a great scent. Lather was perfect as Stirling always makes a great soap. It is such a nice scent that it can easily be used year round.

Today's Challenge: I busted out my vintage and coolest hat I own today. Our family used to rendezvous at my grandparent's house for Christmas every year, so I associate Christmas with my grandparents heavily. I have this old Allis Chalmers trucking hat that my grandpa used to wear amidst his collection of maybe 100 tractor hats. The hat and Christmas scented soap made for a nice trip down memory lane today.

    June 27, 2024 - Information Overload

    • Brush: Rubberset 400 w/ Maggard Synthetic
    • Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing - 921-M
    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Murphy & McNeil - Pisgah
    • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Barrbarr Splash

Today's Theme: Pisgah by Murphy and McNeil actually has a pretty extensive list of scent notes. It is a pretty complex scent, but it is very nice and I always enjoy using it. Total scent notes = 18

    • Top Notes: Bergamot, Bigarade, Cardamom, Incense
    • Middle Notes: Lavender, Ylang-Ylang, Orris, Peony, Plum Blossom, Tobacco
    • Base Notes: Vetiver, Cedarwood, Amber, Patchouli, Vanilla, Gaiac Wood, Leather, Iso E Super

Today's Challenge: I was actually pretty nervous about today's challenge, but as rookie lather gamer, I would be remiss to not shave lefty today, or at least make a decent attempt. I actually went the extra mile and bowl lathered and applied the lather left-handed as well, which harder than it sounds. I actually got a great shave because I was shaving slowly and carefully, not on auto-pilot mode. Have an efficient razor with sharp blades helps a lot too.

    June 28, 2024 - Frugal Friday

    • Prep: Proraso - Pre-Shave Cream (Green)
    • Brush: Omega - Bambino
    • Razor: Wrong_Coyote_9525 3D Printed Razor
    • Blade: Tatra- Platinum
    • Lather: Proraso - Eucalyptus Oil & Menthol Cream
    • Post Shave: Proraso - Sensitive Skin Balm
    • Fragrance: Old Spice Eau de Cologne

Today's Theme: I used Proraso Eucalyptus Oil and Menthol today. Please see Challenge section for more explanation.

Today's Challenge: Coincidentally, I purchased a Proraso Travel Shave Kit yesterday. It included pre shave cream, an Omega boar brush, shaving cream, and some balm all for $16. My Tatra blade retails for about 19¢ a piece. The razor itself is not for sale, but for the challenge, I will estimate the materials to be worth around $1 and I won the razor in a giveaway. Old Spice from Walmart is $8.97. If this isn’t a frugal shave, I don’t know what is. Funny thing is, this was an surprisingly great shave despite being incredibly affordable.

Edit: Mr. Coyote himself said it cost less than a dollar in materials.

    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Hygge Balm
    • Fragrance: Old Spice EdC

Today's Theme: Proraso Red is strictly a sandalwood scent and a decent one at that. The lather from Red is not as good as Green, but still gets the job done.

Today's Challenge: From a quick glance and attempting to stay up to date with this month's madness, I think u/bmac92 takes the dub for Rookie of the Year. I also enjoyed u/Impressive_Donut114 posts throughout the month, especially his shaving cream and car buffer brush contraption.

June 30, 2024 - Bon Voyage, Lather Games!

    • Brush: Omega - Bambino
    • Razor: Leaf - Twig
    • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
    • Lather: Nivea Men - Sensitive Shave Gel
    • Post Shave: Old Spice - Splash - Indian
    • Post Shave: L'Occitane Homme - L'Occitan After Shave Balm
    • Fragrance: Old Spice EdC

Today's Theme: I live in the United States, so I kind of panicked yesterday realizing that I only had American soaps. I have a of Proraso cream, but that meant I couldn't use my Omega brush. I rushed to Walmart late last night and did find a shave product that was not made in America, which seems strange because we have become so accustomed to things being made in China or somewhere besides America. The shave gel actually lathered up somewhat decently with the brush despite it being canned goo. It is certainly a step above Barbasol, but still below Proraso products. I actually enjoyed the fresh clean scent and the shave was okay, the Twig is almost unusably mild for me.

Today's Challenge: As stated above, I'm from the States. The only thing I missed today was a pre-shave, but I don't hardly ever use them.

Brush: Omega Bambino is from Italy

Razor: Leaf Twig is made in China

Blade: Gillette Silver Blue blades are made in Russia

Lather: Nivea Men Sensitive Shave Gel is made in Poland

Post Shave: Old Spice Splash is from India

Post Shave: L'Occitane Homme After Shave Balm is made in France

Fragrance: Old Spice Eau de Cologne is made in Canada

Extra Words: Thank you to the judges for organizing all of this. This was my first ever Lather Games and I had a blast. It was much more dedication than I initially thought it would be, and I did not even go that hard compared to some of the others competing. Thank you for the smushes u/Eructate u/hugbckt u/Tetriside u/bmac92.
