Yesterday after forgetting that I have two space themed scents, I knew had to bring out 42 today. It is such a good scent for me. I have 4 tea scents that I absolutely love: Barrister and Mann - 42 + Cheshire, Noble Otter - Thé Noir et Vanille, and MacDuffs Soap Co - Royal Earl Grey. I’m a tea drinker and not a coffee guy. Those 4 all really have elements of brewing a nice cup of loose leaf. I have a new one I haven’t broken out yet from Talent Soap Factory. Also have Wholly Kaw Iced Tea, but it is more a sweet flavored tea scent, the other 4 lean into black tea, bergamot, or lemon. New blade in the MM24, and my usual new blade nicks from a GEM happened on my second pass. These blades are usually a bit rough the first few shaves. I needed a little alum to stop the blood flow. Still haven’t replaced the styptic pencil my wife used when she cut the cat’s claws a little too short. A little light blood loss, but the wonderful scent took my mind of it for the rest of the shave. Pretty sure once this blade gets to 4-5 shaves, it will be smooth sailing for most of the month.

Sorry I didn’t jump in for the underdog. I only have 1 soap that I got in a PIF. It is great too, but I picked Barrister and Mann in my bracket. Looking through today’s posts, I should have gone with the underdog. I think it will be close. While I haven’t tallied them myself, I think Chicago Grooming is in a little bit ahead. It would be a March Madness bracket for me if I didn’t have one of my later round picks being upset on day 1. At work during the 2014 World Cup, they had a bracket contest. A whole quadrant for me was wrecked by Spain and England. Somehow I3 of my 4 semi finalists made it, and I had Germany winning. I ended up 3rd out of several hundred and won an iPad. Never done as well on anything else like that.

I’m keeping with Otterday since there’s a day off of #MMarch24 today. My wife has been a bit low lately because of her lingering illness, so I let her pick from Logbook, Two Kings, Manoi de Tahiti, and the winner Thé Noir et Vanille. Lather was great, but the area I nicked yesterday was irritated. Tried going around it, but still hit the same spot a couple times.

Today’s match up was a coin toss for me. I don’t have full tubs of either brand. I do have several samples. I grabbed Trade Winds because I have tried it yet. The sample was getting old, and I couldn’t make out much of a scent to it. Went with Thayers and the Limon since they go with almost anything.

Keeping the MM24 streak going. The month is doable if I remember to post. My wife picked Indigo today. I decided that Shire 2 would play well with it, and it did. The grassy and floral tobacco worked well with blueberry, rum, vetiver, and oud. Making it a pretty green and slightly woody scent. Good stuff.

Even as much of a Tabac enthusiast that I am, I am an even bigger fan of Noble Otter. Rawr and Barrbarr were two of the first artisan soaps I bought. I now have over a dozen. I have 5 trifectas of Noble Otter, and only have more trifectas from House of Mammoth because of their sample sprays. The next shaving artisan EdP I will get is probably Rawr. I decided to not do a trickhole shave to spread my otter love. Starting with Plunder, I thought two scents would work well with it, Barrbarr and Manoi de Tahiti. I went Manoi de Tahiti for the EdP because I felt that the tropical scents work the best with the theme of Plunder. I am loving the combo. Of course Barrbarr is a top 5 fragrance for me, and I can’t imagine ever getting tired of it. The GEM blade is starting settle in for me and I had a much smoother shave. Hopefully it will be like previous blades and stay really good for a dozen shaves or more.

Sorry, but Tabac Tuesday will be a Wednesday this week.

Today got off to a meh start. Got to the office, up to our floor, and realized that I left my laptop at home. IT guy wasn’t around at the time to get a spare for the day, so I returned home. I did manage to get pretty much everything I had planned for today completed at least.

Tabac Tuesday was 1 day late this week. I was a little surprised at yesterday’s outcome. I thought maybe Tabac would get at least a little closer. I guess most of the Tabac regulars like Noble Otter too (myself included). I think for the rest of the opening round, my choices are easier and fairly predictable.

Decent shave again. No faults and no stinging from the lotion. Trying to guess when the middle will break through on the tub. It looks like maybe in the next few shaves. I think my first tub of Tabac won’t make it through 2024. Of course the tub is deeper on the sides, so still a good chunk remaining.

My shortened work week is over now. Next week is going to be tough. Today was the best feeling shave this month with the MM24. Still one of the noisiest razors I own, but really is settling in nicely now. I think these GEM blades need to wear off the coating from the edge before they feel better. Of course that could just be all in my head. I do recall watching the blade progress that u/gcgallant showed over a month of MMOC. You could watch the line of the coating moving back away from the edge until it wore past the bevel.

Instead of my usual Otterday, I’m having a Lavender Day. Lavender is not one of my favorite scents, not the least, but I don’t go too heavy on it. Stirling’s Bergamot Lavender is definitely one I like. I got a sample of the bath soap thrown in as lagniappe from SSC and added that scent to my next order. That citrus blends so well with the lavender. Thayers lavender is not one I will replace when I finish it. Just too much of the witch hazel bitter scent coming through. Cucumber and Rose Petal do not have it. I finished with my favorite lavender centric fragrance, Barrister and Mann’s Lavender Interrupted. Will did an amazing job with this scent. Vanilla is a scent that can often overwhelm other scents in a fragrance. Too much lavender will also get out of control. This scent lets you smell both, but neither is too much in my opinion. He really got the balance perfect for me. I can smell the two main components, but I can smell it is much more than those two. I haven’t isolated the other scents yet. It often takes my nose a while to distinguish the other parts, but it will be a wonderful journey discovering what else I can get from it. I need to wear it more.

I don’t think I’ve said it before, but both my Zenith brushes hold the heat more than any other brushes I have. If I ever get a scuttle, those two will be the go to for a warm lather shave.

Today started with the fragrance. My daughter has been wanting to go to Sephora for a while now. My wife is out of town visiting her mother, and my daughter has been behaving well, so we went there today. Not a lot there for me, but they do have some men’s fragrances to sample. I probable have a bit of over spray from a dozen scents, but I actually gave myself a spritz of Acqua Di Gio. I figured the lime if Cuban Highball would work well with it.

Blade is still performing well. Looking like it could be an easy run on it through the end of the month.

    • Post Shave: Summer Break Soaps - Remote Learning

    MMarch24

Well, today is the second time breaking out this soap and fragrance. The scent of the soap has mellowed into more corn chip than nacho cheese for me. The splash is still very much Mountain Dew. Now the fragrance spray lets the cheese come out very strong. Kind of nacho-ish, but re like that staple of the Windy City, Garett’s Popcorn - Chicago Mix of cheese popcorn mixed with caramel popcorn and a hint of citrus, but really it is cheese and corn.

Had to support Summer Break Soaps for sure. Two of the scents I really like are in SBS soaps - Bellringer (you’ll be missed, but I have a spare tub) and Prom King (also have a spare tub and some bath bars). I got a bottle of Jean Paul Gaultier - Le Male to complete the Prom King set. Prom King gets listed as a dupe, but the description is inspired by Le Male. I’ll still count it as a dupe, but as others have noted it is not a 100% duplication of Le Male, but they sync up nicely as a set. Plus soaps and splashes don’t always smell the same as a perfume. Maybe the fragrance blend is closer, but the medium affects the scent too.

Really any of my SBS products would have been great today. Maybe it’s a bit cold still for Cannonball. Pretty sure it will be another runaway matchup today. Sometimes the opponent gets mismatched in the seedings. Today SBS is the Harlem Globetrotters and A&E is the Washington Generals. Ok not college basketball, but it works. Let’s mix up some more sports metaphors. A&E are John Daly getting invited to the PGA Championship, but instead of the Cinderella story, they go home for the weekend.

    • Fragrance: Ralph Lauren Polo - Blue

    MMarch24

I started with the fragrance today. We went to the outlet mall today to look for shoes for my daughter. While my wife and daughter were trying on shoes, I went to the Ralph Lauren store and sampled a few fragrances. I tried Black, Intense, and Blue. I gave myself a free spritz of Blue before looking to see if what damage the girls were up to. Actually surprised to find that they got a pair of shoes at the Nike outlet for just over $30. Now I didn’t buy the fragrance at the Ralph Lauren store. For an outlet store, they still had it priced pretty close if not at RRP. I could pick it up at Sam’s Club for much less. I think the RL store wanted close to $100 for 2.5 oz of EdT. At Sam’s it was around $60 for the 4.2 oz. Fragrance.net has 2.5 oz at $40 with coupon activation. Yeah, I’m not buying from Ralph if I get it.

It is Otterday with no challenges to do instead. I went through my soaps and picked the scent that worked best with Blue. I knew Neon Sun was it as soon as I opened the tub for a sniff. I still smelled them all, and maybe twice for Barrbarr. The other NO scent that was good with it was Jack. Got out the NO brush today, and made one of my best lathers this week. Great cushion, residual slickness, and post shave feel. Really any of the Elite 8 this month have awesome bases, but I hit the sweet spot today with plenty of soap and water. I thought at the start I wouldn’t get there as it foamed up with big bubbles at first, but more water, and getting all of the scooped soap to load in the brush really got it in great shape. MM24 still going gangbusters on day 16 with the blade. Today, it had a bit less toast buttering noise.

Now I need to pick my scent for the first of the Elite 8. My first gut call is Cheshire, but Marilyn, Electric Mayhem, and 42 are also jumping out. Maybe Braeburn could be the one. No bad choices really, but we’ll see what calls to me tomorrow. Today, I had Barrbarr on my mind; at least until we went shopping.

    MMarch24

Over halfway through the MMarch Madness. I only have samples of Southern Witchcrafts, some of the fragrances that have the “darker” scents don’t agree with me. If I used them today, it would have been Pomona or Samhain. I had planned on a different approach today, but made a last minute switch to go all in on fruit themed scents. No surprise that these worked together, though the citrus of the splash and cologne have really diminished the amount of apple from Braeburn. Still, this is a combo I would do again. I haven’t tried to tally up the score so far, but wow is it going to be close. SW can definitely pull off the upset today.

Edit: just did an informal +/- count, and looks like Barrister and Mann is +8 or 9. Tried to use the Blackjack card counting system, but I’m not the best at keeping a count. Going back about half way down they were even, but the earlier shaves had more streaks of Barrister and Mann than Southern Witchcrafts. This can still go either way.

Mammoth Monday is here again! Since today is the last day of winter, I brought out a warm scent. However, the splash is freezing. When I applied the splash, for the first time I got coffee more than chocolate. It faded and chocolate is lingering more. The EdP gives more of the woody notes. My wife says she smells the wood notes today. While I love this scent, she has given mixed reviews. Sometimes she says she doesn’t like it much, but today it got a thumbs up. I made way too much lather tonight. I could have shaved a leg or two. Looking forward to the round tomorrow. I suspect it will be close, but I’ve already picked my side.

    MMarch24

This wasn’t a horribly difficult decision for me today. I have a lot of both brands, but I try to use Noble Otter at least once a week. Spring starts tonight, so I had to go with Rawr. Rawr is among the first artisan soaps I bought. Sea Spice Lime was first, and I got it after seeing all the posts with Sea Ice Lime in the mug. Rawr was next in the early days of my habit. It is on my list of soaps I must replace when I kill the tub (Barrbarr too).

Declaration Grooming though had a big impact on expanding my horizons of fragrance. For years I was pretty anti-patchouli. Goes back to students over doing the fragrance back when I was in college. A significant number of students at CU Boulder seemed to bathe in it. Some guys in the dorms thought that patchouli could cover up the pot smoke. It doesn’t though; it just smells like patchouli with a side of pot smoke. Cigarette smoke probably disguised the smell more. Anyway, after reading some posts about Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli, I got a sample of it from Maggards sent by u/OnionMiasma as a surprise with another soap. I discovered that I do like things with patchouli, just don’t hit me over the head with it. DG’s Y/R/P is now one of my favorites and on the definitely keep stocked list. I also have the DG splash and a bottle of the perfume from Chatillon Lux. If it were up against someone else, I’d have possibly gone with DG (except my other Final Four picks). I’ll give it my fifth spot in the bracket. In honor of that, I went with Delta V as my fragrance. I got about 7 or 8 fragrances out to compare. Delta V or Chaotic Neutral would be ok with Rawr. A few other scents seemed to fit well - Manoi De Tahiti, Barrbarr, Dr. John’s Hydra (citrus goes with a lot of scents), and a few others got a good sniff.

Great shave today, and I’m enjoying my foray into Spring.

After yesterday’s lopsided win for Noble Otter, I had to bring out Declaration Grooming today. I really like this set. Each product seems to bring out differences in the fragrance. I think I get the most patchouli from the soap, but more citrus and rose from the splash and EdT. I rotated in a couple brushes. I haven’t used the copper one in a while. One thing I really like about it, is how it holds heat better. This would be a great brush when I ever get a scuttle. Very good shave today.

It was a nail biter for sure yesterday. With how good Three Scots is, I’m not surprised so many came out for Spearhead. Still, I had to rep the Mammoth Mafia or give up the flair. The finals will be tough. I really like all the options.

Looking like another close one today. Had to go with Hygge since it has been a while since I used it last.

Edit: After my shave my wife said, “Ooh, you smell good.” I usually get that using House of Mammoth, and many of my others. Now you might question my wife’s sniffer since she likes when I use Tabac, but she likes more than half of my sets at least. She even didn’t mind Midnight Stag when I tried it.

Well championship day is here. Time for the 🦣 herd to show up. I went with Smash to use a collaboration between House of Mammoth and Barrister and Mann. Both are great makes, so either way it goes will be a well deserved win. Just two more shaves for the MM24 this month.

Back to Otterday. My daughter is excited for Easter tomorrow. We are going out for a brunch in the early afternoon. 1 more shave on this blade before it goes into the blade safe. Last few shaves have been getting more toast buttering, especially under my chin.

The month of MM24 shaves is over. Blade is going into the blade safe now. Last few shaves were feeling tuggy, and had louder toast buttering sounds. It still shaves, but I’ve gotten all I want out of it. Went out to a restaurant in 200+ year old Inn for Easter brunch. It is one we often go to for special occasions. It is a neat old building and most of the original rooms and additions are now dining rooms. Each room is decorated in a different theme too, horse racing, Revolutionary War, carriages and sleighs, and can’t remember the rest. We had a nice late brunch. Hope everyone else had a great day. Back to work tomorrow after a whole week off. Probably won’t shave in the morning, but might give myself an extra spritz of Le Male in the morning.
