01-08 An easy-going month with Mammoth

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (1)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Hi, hello, how are you. It's been a while, hasn't it?

My last SOTD post here, let's see, was on… 30 November, 2022. Huh. Well, I suppose some apologies are in order. You see, there was that whole issue with the rabid bear, having to save the world over the weekend and– okay, let's cut the shit. I've been absent, and for that I am truly sorry. Life got in the way, I fell behind, and soon enough I didn't think I could hack it with the cool kids anymore. Another reason was probably the fact I settled into a nice daily driver, pared my soap rotation down to just a dozen tubs, and all in all stopped experimenting, buying or advancing in the hobby. I found what I liked, and that was that.

Now, that's not really a great excuse, but it's what I got. I've been thinking/planning to come back, but always forgot or put it off for some reason, and after I missed this year's Lather Games (I mean, why hold them in the dead of our winter, sheesh - don't you know Australia is the centre of the universe?) all hope seemed lost. But u/MrTangerinesky called me back with the allure of Austere August, and I dutifully dragged my sorry ass back for a month of daily posting.

With the lengthy preamble out of the way, let's get into the how and why.

I'm doing two challenges this AA, and they are Mammoth Month by u/InfernalInternal / u/LaTuskFamilia, and the Unchallenging Challenge by Old Spice connoisseur u/cowzilla3. How did I manage to do both, when the latter's rules clearly states I can't? What can I say, I'm a sweet-talker…and already made an attempt on Cowzilla's life in the past, so we have history.

Suppose I better explain myself, then?

Let's just clear my sink-side shave station real quick…

    And there we go.

So, the non-challenge. Cowzilla urges us to use our "easiest-to-use set of products" and I agonised a bit over what that would entail. However, I quickly pieced together what would be my most uninvolved, no-issues, comfiest shave experience, and you bet your ass it involves House of Mammoth. u/mammothben has put together something truly special with the Tusk base. It lathers like a dream. It doesn't condemn you to the deepest circle of hell for using too little water, or too much, or for swirling your brush the wrong way. It has a divine level of slickness and leaves your face feeling tip-top. And the smells - oh, the smells. Mood Indigo (it's just Indigo, nowadays) is like a comfy blanket for the face. It's a night drive from the city to the countryside and back, it's at once mysterious and familiar, it's just damn good. Same goes for the balm. I've had this set since my very earliest days in the hobby - in fact, Mood Indigo was my first-ever Bazaar purchase, I think - and I don't think I'll ever let it slip out of the rotation. Plain and simple, it was a no-brainer choice for the 'unchallenge'.

On to the hardware: I've got a few razors in my collection, many of which I've got a fair bit of experience with. There's my daily driver, the Karve Christopher Bradley with the OC F plate, but that thing bites more than the aforementioned rabid bear I had to fight last Spring. There's my previous daily, the Fatip Lo Storto Originale (the 🦊). There's a bunch of others that are great, but not what I'd call fuss-free or easiest-to-use. But then there's the Aristocrat Junior. These things are a pain in the ass to date (just check Mr Razor's website), but rest assured it gives the most easiestest shave I've got on offer. It's TTO - of course, because who wants to fiddle with three pieces and a blade while covered in soap? That's not very easy-mode. It's mild - of course, because who wants to get nipped while enjoying the luxury of a Mood Indigo shave? It's just all around a great little unit, and if I think about it too much more I'm going to sell the rest of my gear and marry this Aristocrat Junior, so let's leave it at that.

When it came to a brush to use for this whole month, I couldn't not use a Yaqi Mew Brown knot. They're the epitome of easy - cheap, so easy to replace; synthetic, so foolproof, smell-free and soft as a pillow; and…uh…the brush fits the colour scheme of Mood Indigo? I don't know, things don't always have to come in threes. I just couldn't look past this one for my easy-mode setup. It's no wonder this thing is my travel brush and comfort pick.

Blade: It's a Nacet. Accessible, wicked sharp, never had a bad one, it's easy-mode. Nuff said.

Frag: I wanted something I don't mind using every day, and Proraso's Wood and Spice cologne is just that. I do legitimately wear it 4 out of 5 days, because the flask is $50 so I can afford an extra spritz without breaking the bank. It doesn't last as long as your designer scents, but who cares when you can re-up for less than a penny? Easiestest pick here.

And, uh, I think that's it? Let me know if I've forgotten anything, judge overlords. I hope I made my case clear for why I think this is my easy-mode setup.

A few more things for housekeeping: I'm going to be doing this AA in Nightmare Mode, in line with the Mammoth challenge, but I hardly ever change my blades anyway, so I don't think this'll be a massive issue. For proof, here's a video of me unwrapping the new Nacet blade...well, trying to. It had to be a two-parter before I stitched it together in post, and even then I nearly sliced myself open in the process. Opening up a new blade pouch is hard with just one hand!

Lastly, here's some hashtags needed for the bots to do their botting: #UNCHALLENGE #MammothMafia23

It's good to be back, folks. Keen to see how you've all been doing.

    02-08 Onwards and upwards

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (2)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Hey, it's Day 2 and I'm still in it! Crazy.

Despite my penchant for long-winded essays in these SOTDs, due to the lack of variety during Austere August I'm very quickly going to run out of things to say, so I'm going to take it easy for now. That's technically part of the un-challenge, so I expect bonus points. After yesterday's post took over an hour to write (including the video aspects and decluttering my sink space for such) I think that's for the best.

There's nothing much else to report, except that Mood Indigo is a thing of beauty, Tusk is the superior soap base choice, and I'm loving the shaves so far. Let's see if/how that last point changes as we get deeper into the month.

Shout-out to all my Mammoth lather-buddies this AA. Particular shout-out to u/Marquis90, who has also chosen the pinnacle of HoM's line-up in Mood Indigo. Let me know if I've missed any other Indigo-ers.

03-08 In the Mood for Indigo

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (3)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

This was one of the best shaves in recent memory. The soap was at its slickest and wettest, the razor and slightly worn-in blade glid effortlessly, and the balm has me smelling amazing for what I hope is many more hours to come. Just an A+++ effort.

    04-08 - Showin' off

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (4)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Folks, I'm beat. I've worked right around 24 hours combined across the past two days - nice and breezy 12 hour shifts rushing between a looming magazine deadline and mega-breaking news (try ignoring the biggest drug bust in your region's recent history...).

Suffice it to say, I'm ready for a nice relaxing sleep - except I can't even get that, because I've got to be up briiiiiight and early tomorrow morning to cover for our weekend worker as they're (sadly) not able to be in two places at once, and work needs doing regardless of my broken sleep schedule.

At least today's shave was good again. 'Mindigo' never disappoints in making me feel relaxed - like I'm melting into a nice satin bedspread while wearing the comfiest cardigan known to humankind.

I also remembered u/MrTangerinesky's request to better show off my Yaqi 'Purple Haze' handle. I tried my best to get some light shining through it, and the result can be found here. It's not a great showcase of the nice swirls inside the brush handle (especially thanks to YouTube's shitty video compression), but it'll at least give you a better idea of what's in there.

I'll leave the rest to more eager photographers. I'm worn out from what feels like a lifetime of framing folks and snapping car accidents.

05-08 - The infallibility of Mammoth

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (5)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

I want to tell you a little story. If you've been in this hobby for a while, chances are you've heard it or one very similar to it a hundred times already: My lather today was looking very disappointing.

You see, I thought I'd loaded my brush for long enough (we do things by feeling here - I don't have a scale, a microscope or a measuring spoon to always grab the perfect amount of soap) but when I added some water, it was very quickly looking very bubbly. Bubbly is not a good sign, especially when it won't go away even after some very vigorous lathering. I'd actually had something very similar happen the other day, but a bit more elbow grease eventually sorted it out so I didn't think it was worth mentioning then. Not this time. No matter what I did, the lather stayed bubbly.

So I did what every person would do in this situation. No, I didn't throw it all out and start over, I'm not Richie Rich. I just rolled with it, put brush to face, and prepared to follow with my razor. There was potentially a pretty bad shave coming up. But here's where the tragedy turns into a story of redemption: painting the lather on, it was perfectly alright! Starting my shave proper, it too was pretty much as great as it always is - none of that blade chittering, no razor cap skipping, no dried-out skin immediately afterwards. It was just an awesome overall shave.

So, kids, here's the moral of the story: The Tusk base is just that damn good. I've said it before and I'll say it again. There's bases out there that'll burn your house down in front of your eyes if you dare to add a molecule of water too much, or too little, or even if they just feel like it regardless. There's bases that apparently never give you a 5/5 experience, with there always being some sort of shortcoming in slickness. Not with Tusk. I abused the shit out of my lather this time around - I brought it to its absolute knees, drowned it to within an inch of its life, and it just got back up and did what it always does. No fuss, no trouble. What could have very easily spelt the end of my 'easy mode' claims about HoM became a case study in exactly why I called it my easiestest soap in the first place.

My face feels great, and I'm vindicated that, when I shave with Mammoth, it has my back. Always.

    06-08 - Indigo dreams

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (6)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Mammoth is very eepy, good night...zZZzzzzzZZz

I did this shave right before heading to bed. Was putting it off for a while, then finally at the verge of collapse I dragged myself to the bathroom. Results aren't particularly noteworthy, but Tusk and my other band of favourites didn't put up any resistance, as expected from this easy-mode selection.

Indigo is a perfect bedtime scent. Sweet dreams.

    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (7)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap

    This is a perfect shave
    Gliding on an incline
    I'm staring at your post
    You'll comment on mine

Went to the markets with my wife over the weekends. Picked up a first pressing of one of my favourite albums in remarkably good nick. Very chuffed with my find.

It's shaping up to be yet another busy week, least of all because I'll have to pull a weekend shift on top of everything else. I'm determined to force work to let me take Wednesday off - I'll need it after today and tomorrow.

    Happy listening and happy shaving!

    08-08 - House of Meow-moth

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (8)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Featuring my one and only son, Teddy, as today's model.

Something I considered far too briefly before setting out on this month-long challenge was the fact that, by its very nature, shaving with just one set of products would massively decrease the amount of said product as the days and weeks progress.
Now, for most of you that's not a problem because you have the luxury of living in the same country as the artisans that make your AA choices, which means you can just re-up on your favourites at the end of the month.
I don't have that luxury. This set of Mood Indigo was hard to come by, and I'm really starting to fear having to order a new set by the end of August. I can't live without it, but paying $60 in shipping alone will ruin me.
I'll have to square up a bazaar deal with a very nice and accommodating person (this could be you, wink wink nudge nudge) or else bite the bullet and piss away $90+ Aussie dollars to the god of international shipping.

But that's a problem for Juli three weeks from now. Juli today gets to enjoy another day of Mindigo. And Juli today is happy for that. He will stop referring to himself in the third person now.

    09-08 - A Mammoth magic delight

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (9)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

u/MrTangerinesky - I swear I didn't try to copy your last SOTD photo. I do these a day in advance thanks to timezone fuckery, so your photo wasn't even out yet. I swear!

Yesterday night I noticed the wings on my little Aristocrat Junior were losing their shine and sparkle from all of the repeat shaves. Not sure if it was psychosomatic, but it also felt like the cap was dragging/skipping a bit because of that build-up of soap scum/mineral residue (though it could also have just been the lather itself).

Oh well. Nothing a quick scrubdown and microfibre polish couldn't fix. It looks brand new again and still shaves like a dream. The Nacet is also settling in very well. It's certainly lost a bit of the bite it had when it first came out of the tuck, but it still slices through hairs with no problems.

Not much else to report, really. My shaves are getting later and later - need to make sure I get them in before midnight every day else I'll just say 'fuck it' and bin AA. Been too busy of late to stick to my usual 7-8pm time slot.

    10-08 - Lather up!

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (10)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

And here we are in the double digits! Tell ya what, it's been pretty dang enjoyable so far. I love Mood Indigo to the point I'd be alright if I had to sell everything else in my den (not happy, mind you, but at least alright) so this AA isn't nearly as hard or challenging for me as it is for some of you other mad folks.

On the note of 'challenge', let's have a look at the only thing that's really going to experience a noticeable change throughout this month: the blade.
Nacets are known to be rather sharp, and I happen to quite like them, so they were the perfect blade to pair with my vintage Aristocrat Jr which, being a closed comb butterfly razor (are there even open comb butterflies?), is rather mild. I knew the blade would definitely deteriorate as the days dragged on, but I recalled there was a true lunatic on here who's subjected a Nacet to far, far more than 100 total shaves. As such, I knew I'd be alright for a comparatively simple 31 days, barring a dud blade.
It is starting to show a few spots of discolouration along the corners, though. Might need to figure out a better way to store it to make it last, as I'm not going to drag a rusty blade across my face.

Man, that hair in the bottom right of my photo really bugs me. Didn't notice it when I took the shot, and now I can't unsee it. You're welcome.

    11-08 - Den dreaming

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (11)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Taking this photo of my 'den' (read: what my wife lets me keep on the bathroom counter and not on a shelf in the next room) I feel like a mother bird, looking down on her babies in the nest. All of my soaps, balms and splashes - each a baby in its own right - stare up expectantly at me, and I can almost hear each and every one of them mouth 'use me, use me'.

I've never done an AA before this, and I think I see now where the difficulty lies. It's in the lack of variety. It's all well and good to love a specific thing to bits, but I love curly fries yet wouldn't want them for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 365 days a year.

I suppose there's also the matter of subjecting yourself to particularly gruesome gear restrictions (looking at you, pigstinkers and cutthroaters), but as I established yesterday I'm not that worried about my hardware as I picked it to be particularly easy-going.

This whole wistful waffling about lack of variety was compounded today when I received three full, unsullied tubs of beautiful artisan soap in the mail. Mark my words - I will stay strong. But by golly I will also complain about it.

    12-08 - An unusual pairing

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (12)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Ever wishing to broaden my horizons (rather antithetical to AA, I know) I tried the popular American snack Takis this week. A shop opened up here recently carrying a whole range of East Asian spices, condiments and delicacies, and it also happens to have a very small section of international snacks on offer. My wife and I went to have a look after I spotted it on one of my lunch breaks, and we were pleasantly surprised that it's apparently the only shop in this entire town that carries craaaaaazy spices like marjoram, juniper berries and MSG. That's been a big help to our cooking so far as I'm still dodging the day when I have to order my fucking food from Amazon. Plus, y'know, supporting small local businesses.

Anyway, back to the Takis. When we went to have a look around and buy some spices, we also grabbed a bag of the 'Crunchy Fajitas' flavour for a laugh. We'd heard of these before, but never tried them as American snacks aren't too common down here, and if they are they tend to carry a pretty hefty price tag. This bag did, too - we spent nearly $9 on the experience I'm about to describe.

First impressions were interesting. The chips are coated in a powdery mixture I can only describe as the unholy lovechild of radioactive fallout and rust, with its bright red colour and the uncanny ability to cling to your fingers forever after even a single instance of skin contact. So, instantly, the chopsticks came out. I'll be damned if I ruin my nice shirt with this demon powder, and putting some distance between myself and these chips helped keep my next load of laundry from turning bright red.

Then came actually trying one. Now, I know there are a fair few Americans here among the sub's users, so I'm sure a lot of you know these snacks well. Allow me, then, to ask you a question. What the fuck? You ever bite into a lemon? Ever have that lemon then proceed to kick the shit out of your tongue and douse itself with hydrochloric acid? If you haven't (and I'd be surprised if you had - you should go to the news with that sort of experience), trying to eat one of these things is probably the next closest thing. They're not even spicy, despite what the packet claims. They're just the embodiment of tang. Acidic from the very moment they touch your tongue, these things aren't just flavoured with lime juice, they're like a red powder-coated Warhead candy. I'll say, though, that the tortilla chip aspect of this tortilla chip is actually quite nice. When the insanity that is the initial flavour dies down, you're left with quite a nice corn taste, and on that note they're pretty alright.

I know, they're marketed as "intense" and I've seen plenty of videos of people sharing similar experiences to what I've described. But it does make me wonder if the American palate has been so deadened by constant assaults of corn syrup that only the chip equivalent of a chemical plant accident can still provoke any sort of reaction from one's taste buds.

Naturally, I ate the entire bag. Shit's interesting, and I like interesting experiences. And maybe a little pain. I'm doing AA after all. And no, I didn't put any of the powder in my lather. I'm not that insane.

13-08 - Easy like Sunday shaving

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (13)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Featuring the return of my frag in the photo. I do use it every time, I just find it doesn't fit in well in my photos due to its colour clashing with the purple. But hey, I'm running out of ideas.

Not much to say this time around. Lather might have been a teeny tiny bit too dry, meaning I had to re-apply some during a touch-up around my jawline. In my defence, it's Sunday - I got a bit lazy. That said, even an underhydrated Tusk lather is 100x better than some other lathers at their peak.

Hope y'all are enjoying your weekend! We have a public holiday here tomorrow, but lucky me gets to work through it anyway. Fun.

    14-08 - A Mammoth Monday masterpiece

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (14)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

When I started Austere August, I wanted to go with one of my favourite sets. Sure, part of it was in the spirit of u/cowzilla3's easy-mode challenge and the decision to use House of Mammoth was somewhat rooted in wanting to contribute to u/InfernalInternal's side challenge, but even if those two hadn't existed I'd have probably reached for Mood Indigo.

You've heard me waffle on about my love for the soap and scent for two weeks now, but I just want to reiterate once again that this is a special one for me. It was one of my first 'proper' beloved artisans, it was my first Bazaar purchase, and it opened the gates to a whole world of soaps, balms, splashes, scents and gaping holes in my bank account. If it hadn't been for Mood Indigo, I might not be here, at least not in the same capacity as I am now.

My decision to use 'Mindigo' was also welcomed by my other half, who has long since been a fan of this set's unique smell (though she probably couldn't care less about its excellent performance, as much as I've tried to evangelise). In my wife's own words, she "absolutely loves the smell" and tells me every chance she gets - which thanks to this month of daily shaving has been rather frequent of late. I suppose I've got Mood Indigo to thank for stopping her from questioning my "kinda weird hobby" for a minute.

Anyway, I wanted to show mine and my wife's appreciation for this set, so I commissioned her to make this embroidery of the House of Mammoth logo, in the Mood Indigo tub's striking purple. She printed out the HoM logo, traced it on special chalk paper and then impressed it on a length of canvas before mounting it on an embroidery hoop. The smaller circles dotted throughout the logo are done in 'French knots' while the line work is made up of 'back stitches'. She finished it all up over the weekend, and I wanted to save showing it off for a Mammoth Monday.

I'm over the moon with how it turned out, and it'll definitely make a return for future Mammoth-themed SOTDs. I've briefly floated the idea of making multiples in different colours to go along with each set to her, but she prefers to do a pattern once before taking a break to focus on other things. In that regard our hobbies overlap - I can't stick with just one set all the time, but for Mood Indigo I'm definitely willing to make an exception.

Anyway, u/mammothben, what do you reckon? I think my wife captured it all pretty well, and I love the way your logo has translated to the canvas.

'Mindigo' shaves continue to be the highlight of my day. What's not so great is that I can now see the bottom of the tub approach via a semi-translucent hole in the centre of the puck. I'll make it through the month for sure, but I'm definitely going to have to see about sourcing a replacement from one of you fine folks.

    15-08 - An unwelcome chill

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (15)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap

    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

It's very cold right now, and I really didn't want to move away from the heater. But here goes nothing. Shave was great (as usual), but it would have really helped if I could have stopped shivering at any point. I didn't slice myself open or anything, but this one required a lot more willpower and concentration than a Mindigo shave should, especially given I'm over two weeks into this challenge.

I don't rate my shaves as I can't be arsed to come up with a decent evaluation system, but I'll give this one a Cold/10. My whiskers are gone and my face is smooth and shiny from the balm. Normally that'd be a good thing, but now the cold is nipping at my delicate cheeks from both ends. Now to get back in front of my nice, warm heater.

We're officially more than half-way through this month of Mammoth!

It's been a wild ride of ups, and more ups...well, really it's just been ups all the way. That's not surprising, given we're dealing with the best base and scent in the game, here. I'd be very caught out if it hadn't been great so far.

The blade doesn't show it in this picture, but it's beginning to show some brown staining on the corners (as mentioned in one of my previous posts as well, it's not gotten worse really but it well might). I don't think it's going to have an impact on its shaving ability, but it's definitely going in the bin after this is over. Not doing this whole 1000 shaves with the same Nacet thing. Sorry. They really should sue whoever came up with the term 'stainless steel' - biggest lie ever told. Unless this is some kind of 'it stains less, not never' type of deal, in which case that fella is probably laughing all the way to the bank.

On another note, today I tried to make my lather as wet as possible. I normally make it pretty wet, but today I wanted it drippy. How drippy, you ask? Almost run-off-the-brush drippy. Almost as drippy as that Pope AI deepfake thingy with the puffer jacket. And it was glorious. Perfect glide, nice residual slickness, and a joy to paint on and take off throughout the shave. The only downside was that getting to that point required a fair bit of lather-water-lather-water back and forth, but that's a small price to pay for this dripped-out Mammoth perfection. I hope u/itchypooter is proud of me.

Terrible photo today, my apologies. I saw the whipped cream on my iced chocolate was starting to melt, so time was of the essence.

Felt like a sweet treat today and we had an abundance of chocolate ice cream and whipped cream, plus milk we had to use lest it go off. The perfect combo to make an amazing iced choccy. Had to go with my favourite mug too that isn't the half-litre soup mug I use for coffee at work. The drink is not that amazing to look at, but it certainly tasted great.

Verdict on the drink: it was amazing. Just what I needed.

    Verdict on the shave: ditto.

I'm still waiting on the breakthrough of this soap - the ring of death should rear its head any day now. I'll be making funeral arrangements shortly.

    18-08 - 'Slurry skip' madness

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (18)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Well, never let it be said this hobby stops being exciting.

After u/djundjila's world record Weck shave yesterday in which he used the brand-new 'slurry lather' skip discovered by u/sgrdddy, I was inspired to head to the lab myself and see what all the hype is about. Now, I'm not as crazy as these two - I wasn't going to put down a sub-5 minute shave or use one single swirl of the brush to do 3 whole passes - I just wanted to give it all a shot.

And holy shit does it work an absolute charm.

After a scant 5 seconds of tub loading, I put brush to face, casting one last wistful glance at my bowl on the bathroom counter that wouldn't get any use this shave. I'm not normally a face latherer, but for this method I wanted to give it another shot. So I work the lather from the brush into my whiskers. First impressions were guarded: there didn't seem to be much lather at all, and I was beginning to wonder if this was going to work. But after a bit of massaging everything into my face (and breaking out the bowl after all to dip my brush tips into some more water), I was soon left with a nice protective layer of lather. This took maybe one minute in total, from tub load to shave ready. I was astounded.

And I know what you're going to ask: surely, Juli, with such a short loading and whipping-up time, that lather can't have been that good? Well, hold on to your shave towels: it really was that good. Slick, protective, nourishing. It looks thin, but it gives you a performance like you could expect from any 'properly' whipped-up lather. It's sort of the best of both worlds. It doesn't sacrifice comfort or performance for speed like you'd expect a shortcut of this kind to do. My face felt great afterwards - no irritation, no nicks, no dragging of the blade or razor during the shave which would usually indicate a bad lather.

Normally, I'd be spending a good 5 to 10 minutes standing there like a goofball, dialing in my lather in the bowl to its perfect slick drippiness. And yes, that lather would work brilliantly and it is a fun process to really fine-tune that perfect combo of suds and water, but, like sgrdddy correctly pointed out, sometimes you just don't have 30 minutes to do a luxury shave. Sometimes it's 1am, like for this shave, and you desperately want to go to bed. Sometimes it's 20 minutes before the start of your work day and you're rushing to get a passable shave in before dashing to the office. For those scenarios, this slurry lather method is an absolute game changer. No longer do I have to bother with shitty brushless creams or, god forbid, canned foam. Now, I can get a damn fine lather going with my favourite brush and soap in a minute and a half, shave, and be out the door in under 10. Game changer, I tell you.

Another really pleasant bonus of this method: because your brush goes from water to tub straight to face, it retains a good bit of warmth. All you face latherers have it good with that one - I'm used to my brush being room temperature at best after all that faffing about in my bowl. It felt great massaging a nice, warm brush and lather into my face - really added a touch of luxury to what is otherwise a very quick-fire shave.

Needless to say, I'm impressed, I'm converted, and I'll be giving this another go. There's something to be said about taking your time, having fun with the lathering process, and really relishing all the little rituals inherent in a proper shave. And I'll definitely still be doing those. But for those times when I'd love to do that but just can't, the slurry lather method is an absolute god-send.

    19-08 - A delight

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (19)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Another 'slurry lather' shave tonight - still loving the way it delivers a great lather with a lot less effort than I'd usually have to put in achieving such. And that's what this whole easy-mode thing is all about, after all.

Started my shave with snacking on a piece of chocolate-coated Turkish delight, made by a local confectionery here. Delicious. Hints of rosewater and chocolate punctuated the shave throughout as they rolled across my palate, and as I rinsed off and put my balm on, I could still taste the faintest wisps of it. A great way to enhance an already amazing experience.

That's got me thinking - I'd really love a Turkish delight-scented soap. Ideally with chocolate in it, too. Think about it - a strong, floral rose accord, bolstered by the rich chocolate; maybe a little powdery as well. It'd be a gourmand scent to die for. HoM have made some great food-related scents lately, so maybe Ben could work his magic on this one, too (wink wink nudge nudge). Or Mohammad from Grooming Department could take it on - those Mallard gourmands have been amazing. Really anyone could have a great go at it, to be honest. It could even be you.
Just wishful thinking, but who knows.

    20-08 - A "weekend" shave

    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap

    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

The big 20. Thought I'd have something more interesting or exciting to say about that milestone, but I'm at a bit of a loss for words. Maybe I'm just tired.

I've spent the entire weekend working as we've had one of the biggest (if not the biggest) social events of the year in our town happening across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Grateful for my colleagues helping ease the workload, but I still probably spent a combined 24h on my feet rushing around over the 3 days. Such is life. That means I'm already mostly word-ed out.

But it also means I'm really craving some R&R. A Mindigo 'luxury' shave is just the thing for that, and this was the perfect thing to lift my spirits somewhat. Going to head off to bed now and tackle the next week ahead.

Alternative titles: "It's Just Another Mammoth Monday," "Indigo Monday," "Monday, Mammoth Monday," "Monday, I'm in AA"

You get the gist. It's Monday. One of my least favourite days of the week, and I'm not just saying that because Garfield is my spirit animal. Monday is deadline day, and deadline day means no sleep and much looking at words, which results in much stress and no time for fun.

Shaving's one of the small comforts I can hack out for myself on days like these. I've got Mindigo to thank for making the process just that little bit easier and more luxurious; Tusk is very much a life-saver in that regard.

Only one more Monday to go 'til this is all over! Hope you can all have a pleasant start to the week.

Would you look at that: we're in the single digits to go until the end of Austere August! It feels like yesterday that I was surprised about making it to Day 10, and now we're more than two thirds of the way through this 'challenging' gauntlet.

It's a bit too early for the big month in review, but on brief reflection I'm pretty happy with how I've been doing so far. Good shaves, great set. Really re-discovered my love for this Aristocrat Jr, too - a beautiful piece that delivers a dang smooth shave.

Anyway, I'm absolutely knackered. Big day today once again (sensing a pattern here?) and the celebratory drinky I poured myself on a whim is just making me sleepy.

Happy hump day! While normally I'd be dreading Wednesdays, this one's actually kind of special since I finally get to take a few days off after it's all over. Heading down to the 'big smoke' tomorrow morning and likely spend the weekend there before going right back to hell on Monday.

Kinda exciting but also dreading the eventual return to a mountain of unfinished work. But that's an issue for me a few days from now. Right this instant I'm just happy to be shaving with a great set of gear.

It'll be interesting to take this set on the road with me. Normally I don't travel with a whole tub of soap and bottle of balm - I just use my supply of samples when I'm not at home. This'll be a bit different!

Also, let me put you on something if you're still looking for a bowl: these French onion soup bowl/mug thingies are great. Yeah, they're not textured inside so you'll need a bit more effort to get a lather going, but they're nice and spacious and that handle is perfect for a solid hold. I got mine at an op-shop for $2, and there were like 3 more of the same set there to grab. Absolute bargain for how well it works. Just beware of the clanging of plastic on porcelain, I guess.

Formatting on mobile is so ass.

First shave on the road while I'm away on my long weekend! I don't tend to like shaving away from home because I just don't feel as comfortable in other bathrooms - never know where to put my soap or razor, if the counters are clean, how the water reacts to my soap, etc.

In lieu of a bowl I slurry-lathered again and while it worked well enough it wasn't as great as at home. Maybe the water hardness had something to do with it. I'm no chemist. But as I'm fond of saying: a good enough Mammoth lather is a great anything-else lather. Tusk provides.

There'll be a few more road shaves coming so I better get used to this!

More road shavin'. Nothing eventful about the shave itself, but we did have an unfortunate event nonetheless: the appearance of the dreaded ring of death. This is rather sad as it means my shaves with this gorgeous soap are now definitely and visibly limited, and I hate to see a good friend go. There have been some very nice people on here who offered to help me source a replacement tub, and I will need to take one lucky poster up on that offer very soon.

Besides that, nothing much to report. I suppose we're now officially less than 7 days away from the end of this marathon, so there's that. Counting down the days before I will have to farewell this beautiful set for a bit (or at the very least have it enter a less frequent rotation in the effort of preserving it). Starting to think about what my first shave in September will be. Some of you have been talking about that for a while now, but I've tried to stay away from it because I didn't want to get tempted. It'll be a tough choice for sure.

It's the last day of road shavin' and quite frankly I'm happy to put that episode behind me. I don't mind being out on the road but I also really like the comfort of my own home, and that extends to my bathroom as well. It's much better to know exactly where everything goes - I had severe space issues over the past few days, and I'm not a stacking master like u/wyze0ne.

Anyway, we're stopping for donuts and coffee before we hit the road back home, so I'm writing this between bites of a sugar crash-to-come. Hope y'all enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Home again at last. Excuse the mess on my bathroom counter, but it was late and I needed to get my shave in, so I wasn't going to clean all that up just for a photo op.

It feels damn good to be back in my own bathroom again, where I know for a fact where to put my stuff and how everything plays out. A nice and easy shave was therefore on the menu, and it was a treat to carry out and enjoy.

Preparing for a long week ahead so I'll keep it brief, but at least I won't be changing shaving locations again for the remainder of AA (barring some surprise challenge or sudden whimsy).

Three more days to go, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't kinda keen to try something else right about now. Don't get me wrong, Mindigo is still ~~probably~~ definitely my favourite scent in all of shavedom, but to repeat an earlier comment I made in an AA post: "I also love curly fires but wouldn't want them for breakfast, lunch and dinner for all of eternity".

Variety is the spice of life, and my growing stash of variety is definitely giving me some spicy stares.

What's definitely not helping is the fact I finally managed to score a set of Rumble, and it's on its way right now and I cannot wait. It sounds right up my alley and you bet it'll be used the second I lay hands on it.

Anyway, I am currently on hour 30 of a no-sleep all-work bender, I've probably shat out around 10,000 words of varyingly purple prose over those hours, and I crave a stiff drink, a hearty lunch, and a long, long nap. In either order. I honestly don't care anymore. I don't know how I didn't slice my face off in this delirious state, but the ever-dulling Nacet probably had a hand in that. Make today end, please.

The fear of blood tends to create fear for the flesh.
Luckily, there was no blood this time (or at all this entire month, for that matter).

A foggy morning shave, and a pretty hurried one at that. Was rather under the pump this morning but needed to get the shave in no matter what, so I knuckled down and got it all done - plus drying and cleaning everything up - in just around 10 minutes. The usual one pass plus buffing, so not a very respectable time, but at least I wasn't late to work and still got a passable shave out of it, so hey.

We're doing a staff photo today for a special paper next week - it'll be put in a time capsule to be unearthed 30 years from now. My ugly mug is gonna scare some poor cyberpunk kid three decades from now, fancy that. At least they'll go 'man, this dude definitely shaved with Mammoth - it's so obvious'.

Not much else to report. Blade still trucking along and cutting hair, and the rest of my setup feels even more like a trusted companion than it already did when I started. At the very least, AA is a great way to figure out if you're gonna keep using your selected gear going forward. If I wasn't happy with one aspect of it I'd definitely get rid of it after a whole month of forced interaction. Luckily I love it all, and that's why I chose it in the first place.

I'll do a more comprehensive break-down of the month in review tomorrow, so I'll spare you the waffling right now. Just know I had a great time with the shave and am looking forward to tomorrow's with a bittersweet anticipation. I'll be happy it's over and I can enjoy other products, but I'll be sad to depart from this gear set I've really come to understand inside and out over the past month.

    31-08 - A Mammoth month, completed

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (31)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

It's over. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't kinda sad about that fact.

Looking at the clock I don't have much time to get this post in (it's been a hell of a day here at the office so I've hardly had a minute to think) so I'm going to keep this brief and maybe expand on it later.

This has been an amazing month of championing a great set of shaving gear. From my vintage razor that's as mild and forgiving as can be to the best bang-for-buck synthetic brush I could recommend, it's been an absolute blast. Mood Indigo doesn't just have the benefit of coming in one of the best bases in all of wetshaving, it also has a killer scent to back it up. That, combined with the ease-of-use of my hardware, made this a dang enjoyable month (in stark contrast to some of you, who apparently looked to imitate the labours of Hercules or the passions of Christ).

Before I thank the organisers of this whole month and slew of side-challenges, I'd also like to thank some notable posters whose work I've greatly enjoyed throughout the 31 days. u/Marquis90, u/MrTangerinesky and u/tsrblke for our enjoyable back-and-forth chats - it feels at times like we could rely on each other for sanity and levity alike, and I enjoyed reading your posts as much as I enjoyed writing mine. Truly goes to show how great a community this is. I'd also like to thank u/OnionMiasma for his insight, u/djundjila for his speedrun shaves and for introducing me to u/sgrdddy's 'Slurry Lather' (thank you for that method, by the way!), u/gcgallant for his amazing photos and nice convo we had about the artform, and a heap of other people for your great posts and/or choices of soft- and hardware that kept me wanting to try more (or relapse and fall back on the rest of my den). If I haven't mentioned you by name, I hope you nevertheless know who you are and that I appreciate you all.

Lastly, big thanks to u/cowzilla3 and u/InfernalInternal for your respective side-challenges (or unchallenges). I've been very happy to follow along with the requirements for each, and in Spice Man's case even inadvertently contributing to a great cause. Thank you to u/mammothben for making this amazing soap and balm I had a blast using, and for the kind and encouraging words about my wife's embroidery work. Hope your fans on the socials enjoyed it too! Massive shout out to u/wallygator88 for setting up AA - without you it wouldn't have happened.

I've learned a lot throughout this month, come to appreciate my gear for what it is, and really settled into a comfortable routine. It's been fun. Now to think about what to use for my first shave of 'freedom'.

Wow, I ended up going for the full post anyway, so disregard my disclaimer at the start I guess...
