Day 20/31 of Looking for Serenity in Austerity

    • Brush: Semogue Owner's Club (cherry wood and boar) (20)
    • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels Friodur 50 (7/8", hollow ground, stainless steel, masonic deco) (3)
    • Lather: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Roman Spice
    • Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Roman Spice
    • Fragrance: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Roman Spice

The edge has hit its stride and – at peak smoothness now – is a joy to use. I like hollow grounds for their gentle touch, and I like heavy blades for their smoothness ATG. When a comparatively light blade like this one gives you a smooth fool's pass, you know the edge is on point.

I saw and photographed split tips in the brush a few days ago, but I can't find them anymore, and the brush seems in no hurry to start a mass splitting event. I'm starting to feel impatient.

    August 20, 2024 – Failing AA

    • Brush: Dogwood / DG B14 Mammoth yellow label release
    • Razor: Custom designed Böker 6/8 with bog oak scale and French head
    • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. – Weekend in Malibu
    • Post Shave: Saponoficio Bignoli – Liquiriza Menta
    • Fragrance: Dunhill – Icon Racing

I failed already. The aftershave is not the same as yesterday, as I was running out of it. As the alcohol in that Italian mouth wash aftershave is so strong, I will kill two flies with one stone and use DG unscented liniment as piste aftershave routine.

Yesterday I honed the blade for a third time. $honemeisterschaft. I focused on the areas where the blade has uneven wear patterns. I also did not use slurry, avoided pressure or torque. The blade still got it’s uneven wear and in the right light the scratch patterns are visible, but it cuts hair with ease, so how could I test this better? The shave left me confused. Although the razor did not feel extra sharp, the result is fine. I won’t overthink it and try for a few more days before I come to a conclusion.

Decent one after a lazy morning. Some major splits in the boar now, though there are a few stubborn ones, it'll get there though.

    Have a grand one all.

    Cheers

Tried my hand at honing tonight. I started with 3 of my other vintage razors that needed a better edge. The two I honed before seem a bit better now. The third I think needs a whole new edge. The honing on the higher stones didn’t improve the edge very much. I’m going to go down to 1000 grit and work backups again. The Friodur honed up pretty well. I used 8000 and 12000 before stropping. Might not be as good as the edge it came with, but wasn’t bad at all. It shaved much better than the last few shaves for sure. It was probably the smoothest shave this month. I need more practice, but so far feel like I haven’t wrecked any of them.

Here’s the brush after 19 days. I got a great lather tonight. It still takes some effort to splay, but tonight had the best lather of the month.
