Today I decided to go with Affogato, a lovely Italian dessert that combines two of my favourite things, espresso and ice cream. Seeing as I was going to shave with it I may as well make myself one as well. The soap is a little sweeter than I would like and needs a bit more espresso in it, but it is Sweet Sunday after all.

Challenge - Kitchen Day It's just my own kitchen but it at least made for a comfortable Sunday shave. You'll have to forgive the random coloured liquid and test tubes, there was crap everywhere from me cooking and this was the most clear space. My daughter was performing "experiments", seeing what happened when mixing different colours liquids.

    Photocontest

Considering the day I'm aiming this one at 'Sugar & Sweets', the affogato was delicious, though perhaps a tad early for ice cream.

    Have a grand one all.

    Cheers

    Marc

I think I got a cavity from inhaling the sweetness of this one. Hoffman's describes this as a "glorious Christmas cookie scent" with notes of buttercream, caramel, almond, sugar cookie and vanilla. In the realm of Christmas cookies, I'd say this smells like a Snickerdoodle cookie. Is that the most glorious Christmas cookie? I'm not sure it is. This is a challenging subject because I have some friends that go all out baking during the holidays and I wind up with boxes of mixed baked goods from them. Sure there might be a sugar cookie or two in there but there's any number of sugary delights that are far better than a Snickerdoodle. I guess I've been spoiled like that. Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves what your favorite Christmas cookie is. This sample smelled like cookie off the tub but less so once lathered. The shave was fine, but Hoffman's base isn't going to give any of the top tier artisans a run for their money.

If I shaved in the kitchen this morning, I'm pretty sure this soap would not have made it smell like I was baking cookies. But, I didn't shave in the kitchen and my bathroom didn't smell like fresh baked cookies either. As my wife was waking up as I got out of bed, I thought better about shaving in the kitchen in the interest of marital harmony.

Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

This is a super sweet scent I got at the PIF table at a meetup, probably one of the Ohio meetups. Vanilla, birch, bourbon, butterscotch, tobacco leaf, & caramel. It smells like a hybrid between the candy store I used to go to as a kid and a smoky den with some high-class booze in it. Ultra sweet, and another great BBS finish to go with it all.

Happy Sunday, beautiful people. Welcome to the twenty-third shave of the 2024 Lather Games. Today's theme is Sweet Sunday where we shave with a lather featuring sugary sweet gourmand fragrance.

For today's shave, I almost went with what I have used previously, BaM's Dicken's revisited. Then I remembered that I was going to be traveling today. Fortunately, I recently went on a sample buying spree and have a sample from Chiseled Face of their Orange Creamsicle, another scent that originated at LA Shaving Co. It is marketed as smelling just like the real thing. Off the puck I get the sweat creamy center but not so much the orange outer layer, have to see how it smells lathered.

The daily challenge was to shave in a kitchen. A kitchen proper is out of the question, I’m in a hotel 1500 miles from home and the closest thing to a kitchen is the coffee station and mini bar of the hotel room (see SOTD pic in title). Does it count? Hope so, otherwise I’m using a hotel ice bucket as a rinse basin for no discernible reason 😅

The shave was fine, never any complaints with CF’s base but the scent… starting to suspect there is a molecule out there that perfumers use for orange and other citrus and I simply cannot smell it. Seville barely smells like it has orange in it, Pompelmo smelled like the decaying rind of grapefruit with next to zero citrus. Everett that is supposed to feature orange slices prominently has one lone orange slice across a soccer field, downwind. I love Maggard’s Limes & Bergamot because it actually smells like citrus to me. And this “orange” creamsicle never had more than a whiff of orange, it was a shave with the creamy center of a creamsicle from puck to final rinse - someone had nibbled off the sweet outer layer of orange sherbet like goo 😭

Tomorrow will be another crazy early shave as taking red eye flight so I’m glad the only extra challenge is to vote for someone 😄

    Enjoy your day!

Very similar no-fault shaves from both with average feedback. Between the two, the Croma was preferable today. A bit slicker on the glide - not much.

    Final week.

Today’s theme was basically sweets. And u/onionmiasma made a good point “if you have a ringer like Fantasy Donut” why use anything else.” Now I have a smush from u/priusaurus, but I opted to get a full tub because it just smelled so fun.

Pairing it for #fof was a challenge but when I smelled it, I was teleported back to college, when we used to survive on stupid things like donuts and Mountain Dew so Remote Learning it is. But what about the frag. Well, I suppose I should smell like a frat house inhabited by people surviving on donuts, doritos and the Dew, so Remote Learning Frag it is. Keep in mind it’s Sunday, I’m gonna get some odd looks at church. I can just tell them I have horrible indigestion, or BO. Easier than explaining a wet shaving contest. (Yes I put on the frag after the shower. No cowards here!)

The choice for #photocontest was obvious: A donut. Obvious choice, expect a lot of those today. My kids were excited for this SOTD picture because I bought extras.

It seems u/jwoods23 guessed right and today is shave in your kitchen day. So I did. The judges can be thankful I did the dishes first. Of course I can’t set foot in the kitchen in the morning with the chorus of “Dad, I need….” So breakfast was fixed in between strokes. Lather wasn’t quite dripping (yes, I know) so I was able to get the breakfast served without destroying it for my kids. (“But the donuts,” you say, well I got those Saturday morning and they lasted 10 minutes, barely long enough to get the picture. No mirror. Tried to use the oven as a replacement but it was too dirty, so we’ll shave by feel. Oveall not bad, let’s dry off with a thematic towel and enjoy the smoothie!

    Sweet Sunday:
I contend that the best way, hands-down, to approach the Games is by straight-up winging it as much as is reasonable. I start nodding off when whichever stunt clearly took planning; it's the Games equivalent of a staged tik-tok.

Do something weird that you didn't have a column for on your calendar spreadsheet! That's what's organic. That's what's fun. That's what's impressive! Sure, get your calendar in order, but even then be open to making some on-the-fly choices. Take today, for instance.

I figure I'm in the minority here, but I'm reasonably confident that I'm not alone when I say that—broadly speaking—the mere words "sugary sweet gourmand" are enough to make me vomit in a profound spectacle that makes the Belaggio look like a Pomeranian's spittle.

    But I digress.

Enter Jordan with his Black Licorice; now that's a confection I can get behind!

Except I had left today's aftershave slot empty like, "Meh, Future Ginopono's got that handled no problem!" Fast-forward to Future Ginopono (now Yesterday Ginopono) who was ready to concede and use Blueberry Muffin along with other items that have "Blue" in the name—not to mention the inevitable vomit. But that's when he, thanks to all the blue, noticed Gent's Gin right in the freakin' center of my cabinet like a shining, explicity-consumable-inspired beacon, inviting me to a vomit-free kitchen-shave!

    Unifying Theme: Esculents
They're all non-pie things that one ingests through their corresponding pie-hole.

    Oh, and Treet because "treat!"

    Kitchen:
    Yup, that happened.

    #FOF
Oh, am I still doing this? Apparently. What's a SOTD without at least some commentary on the scents?

Black Licorice and Gent's Gin are exactly what it says on the ~~tin~~ plastic container. They're also both notoriously divisive. In years past, I was fond of sipping on a juniper bush, and today I have a refreshing glass of strongly anise-flavored beverage in front of me.

Jaipur Chai starts rough, very much on the "sweet" side of gourmand; it seems to me it would be right at home next to one of the pastry-like scents I nearly stuck myself with today.
At this stage, it strikes me as very much like its namesake (or at least the "chai"-labeled items I've been exposed to). The vanilla comes in a bit strong here. It's not altogether awful, though, because that lady definitely knows a nose.

What's this? As the tops level out, I get a strong clove scent! Fuck, yeah! Another divisive scent, but I am a fan. The vanilla remains prominent, though, then the base cream establishes its dominance.

I think it's objectively good, but I'm not a big fan of it.

    #photocontest Confection
Ugh, I think I got a cavity just by laying that out.

    Use of Theme: Sweet Sunday

It’s all about my favorite shitfluencer, wet shaver, and all-around great guy, u/J33pGuy13. A year ago, or maybe two, he sent me a nice Oumo badger knot out of the goodness of his heart. I frosted it with beauty salon lightener to gel the tips and it turned out really well. But he’s really shitfluenced me to the banana side of life, so for the gourmand theme I’m pulling out all the bananas today.

I couldn’t use SW Boonana in order to meet all the point obligations, but I was fortunate to have grabbed a sample of Chiseled Face Banana. My aftershave choice is the result of an oversight as I used my original choice—Don José—earlier this month. Thanks to Amazon Prime, a bottle of banana essential oil bit my doorstep. Add some Everclear, some household botanicals and I concocted my own Impressive Donut branded banana aftershave. The fragrance finish comes from Radical Works Bananq Perfume with its greener banana notes. All-in-all a very banana-y shave.

    Daily Challenge: Kitchen Day

I woke up in the morning and stumbled to the kitchen, poured myself a cup of ambition, yawned and stretched and tried to have my annual gourmand-y shave for fake Internet points. And something was amiss. Dishes that I left in the sink were on the counter. A banana peel was left haphazardly on the counter next to an empty can of Banana Bread Beer. More importantly, the shaving gear I stashed in the cupboard was gone. Fortunately I could still oblige the Djudges and shave in the kitchen as I had a backup of my software for just such an occasion.

Stay tuned as I unravel the mystery…

    Edit

    Has the mystery been solved?

Did someone claiming to be u/J33pGuy13 purportedly sneak into my kitchen to cause harmless mischief and satisfy his curiosity?

I expect we'll see Apex Alchemy overrepresented for today's theme, since many of their scents are inspired by desserts, sweet foods, or soda fountain beverages.

I layered the To the Moon aftershave with Universal Supreme, which distills teenage summer freedom into a fruity spray accented by wisps of incense and dry grass; taste the "cherry ice pops", chased with a cola bottle straight from the cooler, fireworks bursting overhead.

Theme justification, from the Stirling website:

Delicious Marzipan is the second name for this soap. It really needs no other description, other than to say you might try to eat it. It tastes like soap, though. Don’t ask how I know…..For Men and Women.

I used the "#CNC" tag earlier in the games, but thanks to the portal I was able to realize that I effed it up and put it in the wrong place. So here's my second attempt at getting that scavenger hunt item.

For the "#FAUXFUR" tag, it will be up to the lovely judge to decide. The AP Shave Co. website doesn't have much in the way of marketing descriptions, but with the lower part of the bristles being light colored, then a band of darker color, then another band of light color -- it looks like it's imitating a badger knot. But, if it's deemed to not count, I'm ok with that.

Thanks to u/Priusaurus for the smush of the absurdly named Talent Soap Factory Cakehole.

I’ve been putting the challenge stuff at the end of my SOTDs, but today, since it’s such a big part of the shave, I’m starting with it. Firstly, I need to paint you a picture. I bet a lot of people won’t remember, but last year, I texted my sister about using my niece’s play kitchen for this challenge, she thought I was on drugs, and as it turned out, I was just really dedicated to my first Lather Games.

This story has been repeated time and time again throughout my family. Everyone has heard it and can probably recite it over and over and over again. It has quickly become part of our family’s lore. Everyone loves this story of me using my niece’s play kitchen to shave for the internets. Now, fast forward to last Christmas, my sister wrapped up the toy kitchen and gave it to me as a gag gift. My niece had outgrown it and she thought she’d be funny and give it to me before giving me my real gift (A Maggard’s Gift Card, thankyouverymuch!) And I’ve been hanging onto this kitchen for almost 6 months, waiting for today: Kitchen day.

Now, I know what you’re probably thinking: No, I don’t have any other kids in my life. So, I’m just the ~~weird~~ completely normal single guy in his 30s, with a toy kitchen in his apartment that I’ve been saving for an internet shaving competition. Completely normal stuff. Explaining it to people that come over has been fun. Imagine going over to visit your single buddy, going to his fridge to get a beer, and you notice he has a toy kitchen in his kitchen. Yeah. That’s been my life for the past 6 months.

Well, who’s crazy now, because I’m using it today and I don’t even need to text my sister to ask her to borrow it! So there! Crazy like a fox!

Anyways, I used the little sink to soak my brush. Then since the little sink doesn’t actually drain, I picked up the kitchen and dumped the water out of the little sink, into my real sink. Total practical. I also decided to use the little sink as a lather bowl and smushed my smush right in there and got to loading and lathering. This tiny sink was, well, tiny. Which is why I’m using the smallest brush I own. Creating a lather was still a giant pain in the ass, but I managed to get a pretty good lather out of this soap. The only thing this tiny kitchen is missing is running water and a tiny mirror.

Speaking of the soap: Cakehole. Because nothing says "start your day right" like smearing your face with something named after a slang term for your mouth. It’s one of those words that sounds kind of dirty, but isn’t, but it still feels like I’m saying something explicit when I say the word “Cakehole.” As I opened the little plastic baggy, a scent so sweet it could give you diabetes wafted out. Think of a bakery explosion, where everything that could possibly have frosting was fused into one sugary scent bomb. If there was ever any confusion what gourmand is, this is gourmand.

Applying the lather felt like slathering a birthday cake directly onto my face – minus the sprinkles, of course. This soap is unlike anything I’ve ever used before. Delicious? Absolutely. Ridiculous? Even more so. After rinsing off the lather and resisting the urge to lick my own face, I used Apex Alchemy’s Basic AF. The name alone sets expectations low, and it delivers in spectacular fashion. It’s okay-ish. It’s scented like a Pumpkin Spice Latte, and was an appropriate finish for Cakehole. Not something I really have any desire to use a lot, but it fit this shave. Basic AF, indeed.

With my face now free of cake and coated in the essence of basic bitchdom, it was time to elevate this experience with Valentino's Born in Roma Yellow Dream. The name evokes visions of grandeur and sophistication, a stark contrast to the "basic" splash I'd just used. The fragrance opened with a burst of juicy pineapple and zesty mandarin, quickly followed by a heart of spicy gingerbread. The gingerbread really tied this whole shave together. It was like walking through an upscale bakery. First the cake, then the P.S.L., and now the gingerbread. The dry down of the cologne revealed a base of vanilla and cedarwood, adding a layer of elegance that felt almost comically out of place with this shave. #FOF

    iamhonestlylying’s Daily Top 5:

In honor of “Sweet Sunday”… The Top 5 Flavors of Cakes/Cupcakes

5.) Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting – Perfect for the chocolate lover in your life. If anyone out there says “It’s too chocolatey” there’s an easy solution: add a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

4.) Pineapple Upside Cake - This cake likes to keep things interesting—literally flipping the script on dessert. It's like the rebel cousin at family gatherings, always bringing a tropical party and saying, "Who needs frosting when you've got caramelized pineapple and cherries on top?"

3.) Red Velvet – I still don’t know what exactly the flavor of Red Velvet actually is, but I know it’s delicious!

2.) Yellow with Chocolate Frosting - The classic duo that’s been together longer than peanut butter and jelly. It's like the golden retriever of cakes—reliable, loved by everyone, and always bringing sunshine to your dessert table. You can set your watch to yellow cake with chocolate frosting.

1.) Funfetti - The cake equivalent of a confetti cannon at a birthday party. It's colorful, tasty, and was more fun than the alternatives. Imagine going with a regular ass white cake when Funfetti is an option? With sprinkles inside and out, tells all the other takes to take a seat and watch how it’s done.

(Editors Note: If you even suggest Carrot Cake, you can fuck right off. Carrot cake sucks. Vegetables don’t belong in desserts, and if you think for a second they do, you’re wrong.)

    Daily/Special Challenge: Kitchen Day

Kitchen Day. Alright. I got this. I don't want to use the Kitchen Aid mixer as that's been done too many times, and I don't think my other appliances would make a good lather. I'll have to figure something else out. While I was deliberating, I also had to make some breakfast for young ones, just like /u/tsrblke. Except my young one is a smaller and scalier than his, so I just have to [defrost his food] (https://i.imgur.com/PTQDuub.jpg)(just a pic of a bag, nothing more). Now back to the task at hand.

I figured it out. Might as well take full advantage of the kitchen. I grab a pot from the dishwasher, and add in a little bit more than a quarter teaspoon of Fantasy Donut. I then added the water. Gotta remember to smash the soap around to make it easier to work with! Thankfully for human breakfast I had some donuts (whoa, what a coincidence!), so I scrapped some of the chocolate glaze from one and added it to the soap for some extra sweetness.

Now for the magic. I turned the burner on and got to work* Just look at this beautiful lather!! Applying it on my face wasn't the easiest, I will admit, but it worked. Here it is right before I started shaving. Shaving wasn't too bad. I think the razor enjoyed the chocolate.

*Please ignore the mess that are my burners. Old range + cleaning day is later today.

    Fragrance description

Fantasy Donut is aptly named. It smells like a fresh donut from a bakery. Glad I bought a tub.

Iced Pineapple is a very simple scent from Stirling. It smells like a fresh pineapple. I'm really enjoy simple scents that are done well.

Whiff of Wafflecone can be overly sweet at times, with the vanilla starting. After the vanilla dries down, though, the wafflecone aspect shines and it is a really fun scent. Not too usable in day-to-day life, but it's nice to have a sample of in your den when you want something completely different.

    Now onto the shave!

Look, Aaron (from Talent Soap Factory), if you're reading this, I'm sorry for what I did with your soap. You should be proud that it actually still worked, for the most part. It created a slick barrier on my skin for the razor to glide on. So I'd call that a success. I don't think adding chocolate did anything beneficial to the shave, but it did make the smell even better.

The bullet tip gem worked well in this task. I wanted something that would be easy to use without a mirror and it did the job very effectively.

Overall, 5/10 shave. Right down the middle.

Lemon cakes have absolutely always been my favorite kind of cakes, so when Sweet Lemon was released as one of the first scents in the Icarus base, it was a must buy (the other 2 releases, Contemplation and Shore, were both also fantastic. This was probably the best multi scent release ever). This scent certainly delivers on the idea of lemon cake. It's tart and sweet, but not too much of either. It also pairs so well with the creamy lemon of Sonder.

    • Post Shave: Summer Break Soaps - Bell Ringer

    Sweet Sunday:

I went for the sweetest set I could today. Saturday Morning on a Sunday is pure sugar cereal. Bell Ringer is very fruity. Hydra was made when Dr. Jon’s couldn’t decide which citrus scent to use, so it has all of them.

    Kitchen Shaving:

I headed to my ~~Shaving Den~~ kitchen with the chosen set for today. I gave myself 1/2 teaspoon of soap in the mixing bowl. I knew to really get the most out of this long whippy brush, I needed a large bowl and lots of soap. This brush really works great in a big bowl. I whipped up a few cups of shave batter. I covered it with my favorite ~~shave~~ kitchen towel to let it proof before the shave. I looked at my ~~mirror~~ microwave door. I needed more light and a quick clean of the door to see my reflection better. Time to check the shave batter. It is at soft peaks and ready for the shave. I lathered my face for the first pass. Looking at the picture, I think some lint got left on the door. The photo makes it look more reflective than my eyes saw it in person. It was mostly a three pass shave by vaguely guided feel. Maybe next time mount a real mirror in the kitchen. I know I won’t, but it would be easier to shave.

    Fragrances:

Caties Bubbles - Saturday Mornings is a pure blast of childhood nostalgia. Growing up my mom let my brother and I pick one box of sugared cereal a month. Rest of the time it was Grape Nuts, Cheerios, or Rice Krispies. Sometimes I’d have Malt O Meal or Cream of Wheat. Now when I was 7 or 8, the biggest criteria for a sugar cereal was of course the best toy in the biggest box. Often that would be Froot Loops which is the scent of this soap. Not a distinguishable type of fruit, not at all as Froot Loops smells and tastes like Froot. Just a fruit punch flavor is what it is. Now what about those colors? I’d expect cherry, lemon, lime, orange, etc. from all the colors. 7 or 8 year old me wouldn’t believe it, but all colors have the same flavor. Well watching cartoons after a bowl of cereal, maybe I’d have a glass of juice. Bell Ringer is a very fruity cocktail with the mango and apple being what I get from it. In the Spring through Fall, after this breakfast of champions (not Wheaties though, yuck), I’d be off to play soccer in the first Youth Soccer League started in Wyoming. We had in town a British ex-pat that missed football, so he started the youth league back around 1978. It was a few years before other towns in Wyoming added leagues of their own. Our little town for a while was a powerhouse in this little big state. I wasn’t very good, but when we’d go have a friendly match against a town that had just started up, then I was a goal scoring machine. Only hat trick I ever got was against a team from a town in their first year of soccer. So Hydra being a citrus kick gives me that quartered orange sensation from half-time during our matches. Gives me a hit of nostalgia, and a little guilt remembering how we’d roll in and destroy these new teams. I think in my hat trick game, in the second half our coach moved everyone to play in different positions. Somehow I ended up in goal so that team at least scored. In our town, I was average at best. My older brother was much better and played varsity through high school.

Finally! It’s shave in a kitchen day. Some people may remember last year, I duct taped a shaving brush to the dough hook of my Kitchen Aid mixer and a Legendary Lather ensued. This year, I went back to the drawing board. If this was Version 1.0, I knew there were many improvements that needed be made.

For the sake of brevity, I won’t take you through ALL the steps. But the long and short of it is: I learned how to create 3D models in Autodesk Fusion 360, figured out how to copy the exact measurements of the base of the dough hook to fit on my mixer, added some design elements, and literally 19 iterations later: This model of a Kitchen-Aid Shave Brush Attachment was born. Yes, there were 18 versions before finalizing on the design of this one. I created everything about it from scratch. No downloading other people’s models. This was 100% designed and created be me. Some changes between iterations were small details, like rounding where the mixer pin sits in the handle and other changes included the overall height, or the depth of the ferrule, or the depth of the lettering. The overall look and feel was modeled after the Amazon Blue Origin Rocket and I picked a silver filament and a black knot to compliment the Kitchen-Aid Mixer. Finally, it was time to print and each time I printed a test one, it took approximately 8 hours to print. And I printed quite a few before landing on this one. I’ve had this final prototype – The Priusauruswood Botcrafts LatherMaster3001 - ready since late May, and it has yet to make a lather. I was waiting for today: Shave in a kitchen day.

Now that I’ve done all the preparation I could. I took a scoop of soap, stuck it to the bottom of the bowl soaked the brush for a minute, attached it to the mixer, verified that we’re go for launch.

    And…

It worked way better than I could have ever imagined! The handle and knot stayed secure, the mixer did its job, and The LatherMaster3001 is now ready for preorders!

With last year’s Version 1.0, I couldn’t set the mixer above Setting 4 before the duct-taped handle would come loose and the brush would fly off. With this bad boy, I could push that bitch to the limit! At the end, I had it on 10 and wished the mixer could go up to 11. I got a beautiful slick and shiny lather and was ready to shave!

I obviously used the lather right then and there and proceeded to shave in the kitchen. Would have been a pain the ass to lug that mixing bowl to the upstairs bathroom anyway.

Oh, and my wife’s sister is staying with us, so she witnessed this entire production as well as yesterday’s watermelon carving/shave. There’s no coming back from this, boys and girls.

    Onto the #FOF:

What can I say about a soap and splash that smells exactly like a rich, buttery cake that’s fresh out of the oven and getting frosted? This experience was smelled delicious from beginning to end. When making the lather in the mixer, the delicious scent of cake immediately wafted up into my nose, and then immediately slathering that lather all over my face and shaving in the kitchen was perfect. If I didn’t know any better, I would have guessed my wife was baking a cake as I shaved. Now, I knew that was impossible because the mixer was otherwise occupied, but that’s how spot on this scent is. I honestly don’t love the splash, to me the scent of the alcohol overwhelms the sweet scent of cake. Once the alcohol dissipates, it does smell delicious though. And my daughter took a big whiff of my face and said, “Daddy, you smell YUMMY!!!!” I’ll take that every day of the week. I absolutely understand that this set is not gonna be for everyone, but it’s perfect for a fun shave or for a day dedicated to gourmands. The Crème Vanille fragrance was honestly a little disappointing. For some reason, the perfumer put notes of Jasmine in the fragrance, probably to “balance” the fragrance or something. Whatever. I was expecting a straight up vanilla onslaught, and this wasn’t it. On the dry-down, it became a lot more of what I was hoping for – a warm sweet amber fragrance. In hindsight, I wish I used a different fragrance today because the goal was to solely have a scent-notes for diabetes. But that’s on me. I didn’t read the scent notes since I set up my calendar a month ago so the jasmine caught me off guard today. I guess this is why we buy samples and try new things!

Challenge: See above. Short answer: Yes.

2024-06-23 A Sweet Sunday Shave at the Kitchen Sink

    Daily Theme: Sweet Sunday

Used Chicago Grooming's Animal Crackers which has the scents of Cookie / Flour, Butter, Spices, Sugar. This soap - I love, love, love the scent as does my wife. This is a flat-out gourmand scent and it does it so well. But this one is a "sometimes" soap, an occasional treat for me. I get a little tingle from it. So I use it sparingly.

I followed up post shave with another gourmand - Stirling Soap's Pharaoh’s Dreamsicle aftershave (Sweet Orange, Blood Orange, Vanilla, and Egyptian Musk) which comes together to smell quite a lot like an orange dreamsickle - too bad this is discontinued I have always liked this one.

    Daily Challenge: Kitchen Shave

My Wife was not really down with this one and never really is. She did not say no. But did not want to see it. She also said, "Clean up after yourself." Leaving me to briefly contemplate Ren and Stimpy's Shaven Yak Day. So I waited until she went out to run some errands.

So here is the shave at the sink - https://imgur.com/a/UHpdWQp

Note: This was a blind shave...mirrors are very useful.

    Scents for the day:

Chicago Grooming Co., Animal Crackers - Cookie / Flour, Butter, Spices, Sugar

Stirling Soap Co., Pharaoh’s Dreamsicle - Sweet Orange, Blood Orange, Vanilla, and Egyptian Musk

Take care and have a good one.

Now off to clean the sink, oh and always remember to wash you hands before eating.

Here is the kitchen shave, I have shortened it so you don't get bored watching my back while I shave, at least you can hear the sound of the blade cutting the beard, the birds and the fridge's "murmur" (which I overlooked until I reviewed the video).

The razor in the photo does not correspond to the one I shaved with. This morning I sharpened both razors and I planned to shave with the Leresche and leave the Boker for tomorrow, but I had them both in my pants pocket (don't do this) and in the end, I shaved with the first one that came out of it.

.#FOF Today I wasn't sure what to combine with "Voices", and in the end, I chose randomly. Ozonica has an artificial scent that I don't really like and Jermyn smells good but it has nothing to do with Voices. I don't think I will repeat the combination, I have to look for better options.

Nothing more sugary, sweet, and desserty than a donut, and this is Talent Soap Factory's take on it. It's such a nice scent, not overpowering at all, but more like a barbershop scent that's innocuous enough to wear on a daily basis. It has a slight sour cream-esque tang that really makes this soap stand out. The splash is even better. And it was of course whipped up with the gourmand candy; butterscotch.

    Here is my kitchen shave

Kitchen day isn't as much of a challenge as it is a privilege; I have way more counter space, the hot water comes out fast, and if I do a 180, I have a full length mirror. It also brings me closer to the air conditioner. Win Win Win

SOAP At first glance this soap brings a lot of sweetness. It’s also very dry and hard. But smells sweet. That’s what it is suppose to be right? Sweet!!! Hmmm okay so I needed something sweet to match and why not HoM Voices. It’s sweet sticky rice at its best!! Then to finish the setup I got sweet Holy Black Almond Biscotti which complement the sweetness of the crumiro and the sweet sticky rice. Making all things sweet in this sweet Sunday morning!! Wow that was a lot of sweetness!!

RAZOR - My personna blade is almost done for! Hold on little buddy just a few more days till the end! Oh and shout out to my sweet BFF u/curbside_champ for the voices splash sample.

THE THEME - So this challenge comes at a time where I was suppose to do the dishes and I got busy and then I had to squeeze a shave in! So don’t judge me if there are dirty dishes on the side. Plus this soap is hard to lather. On the plus side of all this I got to use the faucet snake to pressure wash my face clean! Hurray !!!!! Now I’m ready for the scorching Sunday heat!!

    Sweet Sunday

It’s hot today, 90° with a feels like 98° and humidity 62%, it’s just terrible. It’s not raining but my one Husky has climbed up onto his safe place so that means there’s thunder coming.

Soap and splash fit the theme today no problem. Some might question the frag but this is a super sweet and warm. I normally wear it in colder temperatures so December and January but I broke it out for today. Here is the Perfume Pyramid if anyone is interested in it.

Today’s challenge: My wife truly thinks I’m nuts. She thinks we all are. But here’s video of my kitchen shave. I tried to keep it short but I recorded my lathering in this one so it’s 8 minutes long.

P.S. Yes that’s James our Elf on the Shelf swinging from the Pots and Pans holder. We just never put him away after we broke the news to the youngest about Christmas. Now we keep him around for Magic all year.

Are you ready for some nonsense?

    How about a face reveal?!?

The KitchenAid lather has been perfected; I believed this even before Prius posted his SOTD today, and as it turns out, the bar of “perfection” can raise when 3D printing gets involved. As such, I didn’t breakout the mixer today. Instead, we went low-fi with my immersion blender whisk attachment. To try to save myself a step, I first checked to see if I could do this without tape. Alas, that wasn’t going to work. However, a single layer of duct tape was all it needed to stay put. I then lathered the traditional way – on high speed, with a mug of water nearby for reinforcement. This took a couple tries, and ultimately was easier without holding my phone for video, but the final result turned out a-okay.

Even though we have some good lather in this bowl (better than I often have the patience to do by hand), I’m a ~~face~~ head latherer at heart. This immediately made a mess, all over my shirt as you can see, and also on nearly every surface of my kitchen. As to not give myself a massive cleaning chore, I resorted to painting the lather on, which was somewhat difficult with the blender attachment still taped on. Then the real work began – seeing if the sharpest knives in my kitchen are razor-sharp. First came the Hitohira Santoku, which is apparently not as sharp as when I bought it last year. I don’t think it took off any hair. So I tried what I’m confident is the sharpest non-serrated blade in my kitchen, my Chinese cleaver. Alas, again, no hair shaven, as you can see from my look of disappointment at the end. With some forethought, I could have had them sharpened at my local shop, but even then I’m not sure how good of a shave I would have gotten. So I lathered up again and had to grab a real razor. I was bummed that this was necessary, so I made sure to at least choose one with a patina to match the carbon steel of my first knife choice. I also realized that my videos don’t show the whole shaving-in-the-kitchen thing as much as I would have liked, so here’s one more shot.

Cakehole is advertised as a “perfect blend of moist white cake and hurt-your-teeth sweet butter cream vanilla frosting.” I don’t get this as much as I was hoping; to my nose, this is cake batter. Straight up box mix, add a couple pantry staples and, like magic, you’re an hour away from a cake-smelling cake batter. It certainly hits the theme, but is not the most exciting gourmand when it comes to fragrance-land. So, I decided to follow up with 3 Scots. Now, this is not advertised as a gourmand, but I think it’s highly relevant to today’s theme. Something about Shawn’s blend of warming spices and citrus smells positively delectable to me. It doesn’t literally taste good enough to eat – but rather, smells like the feeling of digging into a spice cake with an orange-scented cream cheese frosting. It’s joyful and comforting all at the same time. Finally, IA’s wildly simple vanilla/maple fragrance. It’s not trying to be subtle. In their effort to remind me of fond college memories going to the Ben & Jerry’s on Church Street, I instead get punched in the face my maple syrup spiked with vanilla. It’s unapologetic while also not quite harnessing its intended inspiration. #FOF

Rustic bourbon sugar and peach dessert - quick 20 minute recipe

This bourbon and peach dessert is the kind of dish that you prepare in advance and eat lather. Its something you'll never boar of eating and if you follow this recipe it'll shave you time so you can go about your lather games without interruption

I love summer. Do you? This recipe reminds me of summer past. Right from when I was a young kid, jubbing into HMV and getting the latest cassettes on the five finger discount through to more recent ones where my beautiful family and I have been blessed with such amazing times. We are truly blessed.

My daughter loves peaches. I have a funny anecdote about her and peaches and it's more inappropriately sharing of a small child's thoughts and feelings than u/tsrblke has been doing. I mean how cute is that especially if you go to my Instagram and click like on the post that shows her in clothing we flagged free from a trendy company

This is such an easy recipe that I don't know why you haven't made it already and all the ingredients can be bought from you local supermarket. I've put links into my favourite shop as they pay me and they are affiliate links. Use them so as to keep this content free people.

Obviously if you've got a problem you can switch the bourbon out for something else. Maybe an AA meeting. But if you do want bourbon then this is the finest bourbon available to buy

Which brings us to the recipe. Except I need to put in a few more comments and maybe an anecdote about the song peaches and the band. But purely to sneak in some more affiliate links. Like this one which is a YouTube link to the song peaches

Anyway I've stalled as long as possible. Here's the ingredients

Lather: house of mammoth x barrister and mann - smash

    The recipe is below

Didn't shave in kitchen because it was that or go for a run and I picked the latter. And then had a really crap slow run which was the universe scrubbing me as well I deserved.

But SMASH is a dessert flavour soap.

Once again you will be taken on a journey. And whether you start with THE VIDEO or you read the post first is up to you.

Now, I have a YouTube channel and at the current apartment I shoot my videos in the kitchen, so the daily challenge given for today was nothing special for me and I got to brainstorming. Going back in my mind, I recalled that in previous Lather Games, many things have been thought of and used, from spatulas, to mixing robots, etc. But today I think that once again my ingenuity got the better of me.

That's right folks, welcome to CookShaving with Mr. TangerineSky. I realised that no one has ever BAKED lather and used it to shave. In the video I stayed in character, but here, I will tell you exactly what happened. So I mixed my lather, used WAAAAY more soap than I usually do and then put the lather in a tray for muffins. I set it in the oven, put it on around 200 degrees(Celcius) and went for a smoke to wait 20 minutes, cause that's what I thought up of initially.

I went back, the kitchen smelled wonderful of cookies and other gourmand delightfulness, it was like I was baking for real. Lo and hehold when I opened the oven and saw NOTHING, the damn lather had disappeared... Where is u/Priusaurus when you need some lessons of thermodynamics. I realised I fucked up, but I wasn't gonna give up, I had set myself the task of shaving with baked lather and gosh darn it, I was gonna do so!

I re-lathered and just filled out one of the muffin slots to the top and did the same temperature for 3 minutes. I actually watched it and stopped before it started to disintegrate. The end result was such that a coconut soap maker would envy. The structure of the lather had become a big fluff, and all the water had gone to the bottom of the tray, genius I say!

I do have to admit that slapping this abomination of a lather on my face felt very nice and comforting, the smell was elevated, the temperature was very warm, I could even say, hot(almost burned my face in the beginning).

The shave actually went better than expected, I did a one pass, cause the lather was disintegrating and I don't think another pass would have been possible, but one pass ATG with the Rex Envoy was enough for a DFS! All in all I had a blast executing my idea and filming it! After all was said and done I was content and satisfied!

I'm glad you were with me tonight, and I hope to see you in another ShaveCooking with Mr. TangerineSky! Stay safe!

Evening shave of super sweet options. At the cousins in Wales, not sure what drumstick squashies are, but this seemed the perfect sickly sweet precursor face wash for with night crawler today. Night crawler is exactly as advertised, it smells like sour gummy worms. Think blue raspberry candy, whether jolly ranchers, gummies, slurpees. The AS is particularly potent. IA waffle cone is also perfectly matches its namesake. Painfully sweet maple, vanilla, and waffle smelling. Think walking into an ice cream or gelato shop where they have fresh made waffle cones. Lots of caramelized sugar. Everything today is too sweet, but on theme nonetheless. Definitely one of the more interesting pairings this LG. #FOF

For #PHOTOCONTEST went with darkness. Problem is new iPhones just auto fix that. So what is more cliche than photo lens blur darkness when it comes to SOTD photos.

Another daily challenge I sadly did not manage, was not about to shave in the cousins kitchen. Nor did I have a hat. We are close, but that seemed a stretch. So here’s some Hell’s Kitchen NY facts and tie ins for today shave instead. It has a high population of LGTBQIA folks, and June is pride month. Matt Murdoch aka Daredevil is based there and is blind, so I went with darkness for the photo. Noted residence of famed Chef Tony Bourdain, whose favorite dessert was crème caramel, which has the same vibe as today’s frag.

    LET'S KEEP TALKING ABOUT FOOD

I am not a fan of gourmand scents, especially when they take their inspiration from stuff I like to eat.

Why would someone want to smell like yummy food?

Are you trying to lure your peers into cannibalism? Halloween was yesterday's theme!

So, here I am with today's theme, outside of my comfort zone.

Big thanks to Aaron from Talent Soap Factory for assisting me with my choice of soap among his various dessert-y options. In the end, I was undecided between Kcal and Nevermore, and he suggested the latter.
Which made me happy, because I LOVE both the label art (I wish the artist was credited), and the E.A. Poe reference.

Nevermore's scent is inspired by a Fudge Jalapeno Cupcake, a recipe I would be curious to try, one day.
To my non-American nose, the dough + cocoa/chocolate accord that I get from the soap evokes core memories of chocolate chip cookies.

After Poe's Raven reference, this Sunday's literary supplement continues its homage to 1800s authors with a brand new bottle of Dickens, Revisited.

Just like with Nevermore, my emotional memories prevail here on any rigorous scent analysis.
I smell mostly a nice accord of dark cherries with gingerbread and Swiss-style Christmas cookies.

My photocontest scavenger theme required me to include an actual sweet.
I thought about continuing my exploration of confusing identities, by choosing a danish pastry, like a typical Italian "sfoglia ripiena", i.e. laminated pastry filled (with custard, would've been my dream choice).
The confusing identity aspect is that in Danish and other Scandinavian languages the term for laminated pastry is wienerbrød, meaning "Viennese bread". On the other hand, in Vienna, danish pastry is called Kopenhagener Plunder, referring to Copenhagen, or Dänischer Plunder.
No one seems to want to take credit and own it.
I understand this kind of attitude when applied to something annoying, such as Syphillis (various countries used to name it after a country different than theirs: French disease, German disease, Polish disease, etc). But in a world of continuous appropriations, why leave to other the credit for good pastry?

In any event, I felt that it would have been insensitive to Dickens (Revisited) if I had picked a Danish, after the the "barbershock" that befell on Charles Dickens when Denmark's most famous writer, Hans Christian Andersen, went to visit him in the UK:
"When he arrived, he asked that one of Dickens’s own sons give him a daily shave, explaining that this was a custom for hosting male guests in Denmark. Weirded out, Dickens made him a daily appointment at a nearby barbershop instead."

I therefore picked another Florentine pastry specialty, the budino di riso, a rice-pudding tart.
As an homage to B+M cherry-forward AS, I picked a variant with a sour cherry on top (pictured in my SOTD).

To complete my shave, I tried yet another new-to-me creation, Meleg's Very Cherry Rose Chocolate Patchouli, which I found surprisingly great (considering the gourmandy notes in the name): the chocolate backbone connects to the main inspiration of Nevermore, while the other notes entertain a subtle and hypnotic dance that resonates with the cherry element in Dickens (Revisited).

    FOF

And this could be the revisited song for that hypnotic dance.

    SWEET JUNE

Anyone who's ever had a rice tart
Wouldn't turn around and diss it
And anyone who loved cocoa with their heart
Wouldn't turn around and hate it

    Sweet June, sweet June
    Oh, sweet, sweet June

You're thinking of chips in your cookies
Your Nevermore smells just like them back home
    You're splashing down with Dickens
And thinking of cherries back home

    Sweet June, sweet June
    Oh, sweet, sweet June

Anyone who's ever had a cherry
Anyone who's ever had a rice tart
    Anyone who's ever been gingerbread-hungry
And anyone who's ever loved pastry art

    Sweet June, sweet June
    Oh, sweet, sweet June

    Heavenly cherry and roses
    Seem to whisper with chocolate
    Heavenly cherry and roses
    Seem to whisper with chocolate

    La-la-la-la, la-la-la
    La-la-la, la-la-la
    Na-na-na-na, na-na-na
    Na-na-na, na-na-na

    Sweet June
    Sweet, sweet June

    TODAY'S CHALLENGE

No issues shaving in the kitchen: there's a sink, all it lacks (at least in my kitchen) is a mirror, but my tablet's front camera solved the issue.
No, I didn't use any kitchen tool to prepare my shave, mainly because today I was using another untested product for the first time: the tiny Stanhome restored and re-knotted by TSF. To me, the handle looks a lot like a caramel pudding, and I couldn't think of any other tool to make my first TSF lather. It felt like shaving with a toy, and I wouldn't use it every day, but it was fun and it contributed to the slightly nostalgic mood dominated by classic authors and memories of past pastries.

Christmas is such a fun time for sweet treats that are special to the season. Will's favorite holiday cookies and mulled wine can be found in Dickens, Revisited and Smoking Bishops respectively. For something a little more abstract, Xmas combines treats like candy canes, biscuits, butterscotch, and bourbon; something for all ages.

    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Voices
    • Fragrance: The Holy Black – Almond Biscotti EDT
    • The Lather: This was my first time trying Abbate Y La Mantia and I had such high hopes. The soap smelled just like cookies, but unlike how sweet the smell was the lather was abysmal. I used a large portion of the sample I have and still it was like soap Houdini. I added more water, but that just amounted to a runny lather. I’ll be honest, I got more out of my sock lather the other day.
    • The Shave: Shaving via iPad camera doesn’t exactly lend itself to a good shave. Top that off with a thin runny lather and you’ve got a recipe for cuts. Alum stick to the rescue.
    • Aftershave/Frag: Since today is all about sweet gourmand scents I topped off the shave with some HoM Voices for that iconic Southeast Asian mango sticky rice scent. Personally, it’s one of my favorite desserts. After that I used a little Almond Biscotti for that extra little sweetness I didn't need. The sweet on sweet was way overkill, and if ever there was a diabetes scent, my combo today totally nailed it.
    • Theme: Crumiro is based on the Italian biscuit (cookie) Krumiri, and is scented like a fresh baked cookie.
    • Challenge: Todays challenge was to shave in the kitchen. I did indeed set up in the kitchen next to my sink for my shave. I learned my lesson last year when I tried to use my wife’s compact only to see everyone else shaving in the 21st via iPads. While shaving I did opt to up my game and try to bake my own Krumiri.
    • Nailed It: I decided to try and bake Krumiri for 2 reasons. I wanted to know if the soap scent was accurate, and I also wanted to see what it might taste like. I know fellow competitors have tasted there soap, but I have heard soap is a bad reflection of actual taste. So I went online and found an Italian magazines recipe to make these little guys. I started by making the dough before I shaved. It has to rest for 30 min in the fridge so I quickly tossed the dishes in the sink and knocked out my shave. After resting the dough gets piped onto a cookie sheet (I didn’t have a serrated tip) followed by another trip back to the fridge for 10 min. Finally, I was able to put it in the oven and get it cooking. To say I failed at making Krumiri is a bit of an understatement. I did however get to the bottom of the initial question and yes, the scent is accurate, and this recipe tasted a lot like sweet cornbread. As if a crappy shave and baking failure wasn't enough, my mother-in-law is visiting and witnessed the whole thing. I will now get to hear about this for many years to come.

Today Lather Games brings us to a land where shaving meets pure, unadulterated sweetness. It's a day to indulge in the candy-coated fantasy that is Candy Moon, finished with the delectably fragrant Rumble. I swear I’ve stepped into a confectionery wonderland.

As I opened the tub of Candy Moon, a wave of sugary delight greeted me like a warm embrace from a candy store. The scent was a sweet, cloying blend of Strawberry Cotton Candy, Toffee , on a base of Mocachino. I imagine this is what Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory smelled like. I imagined a carnival where every ride is made of sweets and every step taken is on a path of powdered sugar. Applying the lather to my face was like dipping into a cloud of spun sugar – soft, luxurious, and tempting to take a little taste of it. I used the matching splash and it hit my skin with a cool, refreshing tingle, and the scent blossomed into a full-on sweetness explosion. The scent of the splash lingered, a persistent reminder of the joy that candy can bring. It was sweet, yes, but the mocachino notes gave it a depth that made it an adult indulgence, not just a childish whim.

To finish, I used House of Mammoth’s Rumble. The fragrance, while building off the Candy Moon duo perfectly, brought its own more mature twist to the day. Rumble is like the far more sophisticated older brother to Candy Moon’s immature essence. They may be kind of related, but in actuality, they are miles apart from each other. Rumble added a much-needed layer of complexity, a blend of rich, warm gourmand notes that mingled with the sweet candy essence to create a symphony of scents. The interplay between the sugary notes of Candy Moon and the deeper, more robust elements of Rumble was extraordinarily sweet. It was like a dessert that's been carefully crafted by a master chef, with each note enhancing and elevating the experience to new heights.

Challenge: This was an interesting change of pace. I wish I had a portable mirror or something more reflective in my kitchen to use as a mirror in the kitchen. I was flying blind today, going entirely off muscle memory and feel.

Very busy day today hosting my brother and his partner, helping my parents move furniture around and visiting my grandmother. I bet if I had brought my shave gear to grandma's she would have been cool with me shaving in her kitchen, but alas I had to shave in my bathroom like I always do.

Animal Crackers smells like animal crackers, Sonder smells like a sweet and creamy lemony dessert, and Whiff of Wafflecone is exactly that. I was sad to finally kill off the sample that I had, but I enjoyed the dessert shave today with three wonderful scents.

    June 23, 2024 – LG24 Day 23 - Sweet Sunday

Daily Theme & Relevant Post/Frag: Fragrantica defines a gourmand smell as "...reminiscent of foody smells, specifically sweets and desserts...". Voices meets that criterion with mango, pandan, sticky rice, and coconut milk as part of its scent profile. Mango Pandan Sticky Rice is a variation of a traditional Southeast Asian dessert made with glutinous (sticky) rice, mango, pandan and coconut milk.

Today's post has scents when combined make another gourmand note. Rum, coffee and chocolate are key ingredients in many desserts, including Spanish Chocolate Cream and Chocolate Rum Coffee Mousse. For the frag, Polo Black features mango; and its main accords are tropical, fruity, and woody. The soap and the frag pair very well together, and the addition of the chocolaty post brings the sticky rice dessert scent to an elevated level.

Daily Challenge: As mentioned on Sunny Days, we are sharing a villa with 6 other soccer parents while in Bali supporting our kid's soccer team. Our villa has a common kitchen, so once again I needed to perform a clandestine shave to avoid having to explain to them what the Premier Internet Wet Shaving Competition is and why I'm participating. Luck was on my side because when I went to do my shave, all of the parents were either resting in their rooms or had left the villa to see the sights. I picked my shaving spot and built my lather. I lathered up and did my first pass, re-lathered, did my second pass and cleaned up. Once again no one in the villa noticed what I was doing. If I wasn't so old and fat, I might have had a future as a shaving ninja.

SOTD Pic Note: My SOTD picture was staged prior to flying out the Philippines to Bali. I brought with me samples/smushes/decants of all needed software for LG use during this trip. Here's a pic of today's wares taken just prior to shaving.

Since when does shaving make you hungry? Well it sure does on Sweet Sunday. I chose my Chicago Grooming Animal Crackers shaving cream. Who doesn't like animal crackers? It doesn't smell like just any animal crackers, it smells like the best kind "Barnum's". The kind you find in the circus car box https://imgur.com/a/Z9JTR8S

I finished off the shave with Hoffman's Affogato aftershave and EDP. "An affogato, known in full in Italian as affogato al caffè, is an Italian dessert comprising a scoop of plain milk-flavored or vanilla gelato or ice cream topped with hot espresso." It was wonderful! Now if I can find a shaving soap that smells like a Cannoli. Does anyone know if there is one?

Kitchen Shave: The daily challenge was another tough one to pull off without my wife finding out. I quietly crept into the kitchen to shave while she was in the connected living room on a webinar. I rushed a bit and had a small nick on my chin. It was worth it to get the point! Here is my set up on my kitchen island. https://imgur.com/a/YaiAEnX I used a bowl of water and my phone on a stand with a mirror app, so I wouldn't shave blind.

Still going with different blade, brush, razor, soap brand and aftershave daily!

For the Daily Challenge I commandeered my niece’s kitchenette. Was able to take a SOTD photo before getting kicked out. My niece put me on childcare duty (she has three babies).

The TSF Fantasy Donut smush arrived courtesy of the Reigning Lather Games Champion u/Priusaurus! Great to have vets around here encouraging the newcomers.

Fantasy Donut smells like a very sugary, glazed donut (with sprinkles). And what a lather! Easily one of the top 5 lathers I’ve attained thus far—virtually effortless.

I like to pair booze with desserts (especially rye whisky with pecan squares, for some reason) so I chose HoM Smash. The peach note was much more pronounced to me than the bourbon. But peach is great in desserts too.

Cherry also works well in desserts, so I chose Tom Ford Cherry Smoke. I had high hopes for this one (cherry + smoke—what’s not to like?). Unfortunately to me it smells less like cherry or smoke and more like the restroom at a moderately fancy Indian restaurant.

Today in Brush Strokes we feature the sculptural works of Janine Antoni, who works in chocolate and (wait for it)…LATHER!

I have gone on record saying that I can get a good shave out of any modem soap.

Turns out I need an "almost" in that quote.

I picked up this tub at the Maggard's PIF table. Thinking it would be fun to try, I put it in my bag, and then later slotted it for today's theme

I went back to check the Spice Off to see if I was unique in my distaste for this soap. Turns out I'm not. It just didn't do a good job of providing slickness.

I also didn't love the smell. Smells like something u/priusaurus would like.

I paired my chocolate scent with coffee, as I often do. Lots of burn from the splash. Embrace is a great scent.

The description on this soap list bourbon, oud and caramel. I used to think of this as a boozy take on Cakehole, but it’s not as sugary. Just had that sweetness underlying the alcohol.

    • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Amazelnut

Today I had a cancelled flight so changed my plans. Luckily, I decided to have one extra days worth of soap just in case. Amazelnut is a sweet gourmand scent that I would be more than happy to smell when waking everyday. It has notes of hazelnut and an added depth of vanilla, French vanilla anyone? When lathered, it brings out the depth of scent. There is some vetiver, and it brings a more perfume-esc quality to the soap which makes it more wearable. For my memory, it brings back a specific coffee/candy shop in my hometown because of the sweet coffee scent. One that was there long before me and kept the 1930-1940s small candy shop decor and vibe. Before I liked coffee to drink, we would get hand mixed soda (my favorite was Vanilla Coke) and in the winter milk steamers (again my favorite was vanilla). The shop is still there today although I haven’t been there in a while. But I’ll always have those memories of 7th and 8th grade after school stops.

I found a bucket at my sisters where I was lucky enough to stay instead of a hotel for the #photocontest

Theme: All software scents smell like dessert, sweet beverages, or sweets.

Challenge: I tried to use a hand mixer for the lather. The brush went crazy. So, I had to give up on the idea. I used the reflection in the oven door to face lather and shave. Thanks to Starbucks for the rinse cup. It kind of looks like crema.

Today's lather is Cakehole from Talent Soap Factory. Thanks to /u/Priusaurus for the smoosh. Cakehole is marketed as a vanilla cake scent. It’s sweet, but not as much as I expected. There’s vanilla, but it lacks the depth and complexity of vanilla bean. There’s a note of sweet bread. It does smell like cake. It's the standard Duncan Hines boxed cake mix. The soap was good from what I could gather squating in front of the oven. I have enough soap left for another shave. So, I’ll have to test this soap base again at a later date.

I believe this splash is based on a cocktail. Peaches + Scream is very peachy. I’m not sure how the smell of cream exists in fragrance, but this smells (dairy) creamy. Teak is an interesting touch that fits surprisingly well. It’s subtle, and rests beneath the peaches. Hints of bourbon and amber add a touch of warmth and compliment the airy, fruity notes. It's an approachable fragrance. It's not too sweet, or too heavy. I think this is a crowd-pleaser.

Corpse Reviver is an amber vanilla fragrance with lots of gourmand scent notes. I smell an intense dark chocolate note. After a minute or two, the chocolate gives way to brown sugar sweet whiskey, plum/date/fig fruit, and vanilla. Eventually, I get a bit of an animalic note. But, it doesn’t change much over time. This fragrance is decadent. I love the heavy dose of dark chocolate. It’s not an everyday scent. But, it would be fitting for a night out.

    Jun. 23, 2024 - Crazy kitchen shave

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Ninja Professional 1200 / no brand basting brush

    • Blade: Astra Green (2)

    • Post Shave: Mickey Lee Soapworks - Lū’au

Daily Challenge: Yes, I called it for today’s challenge! Djudges are predictable, just like u/Priusaurus with his repeat of his KitchenAid mixer shave. Yeah he 3d printed a ~~dildo~~ rocket brush handle attachment but yawn it’s still the same old thing. Still using something to spin a brush around to make lather.

What we need is something new here, we need a different kitchen tool, but since I’m lazy, I need something that will do the work for me still!

Enter the Ninja blender aka my youngest son’s favorite kitchen tool! Whenever it comes out he knows that he’s getting a good smoothie! So for today’s shave I knew I had to wait until after he went to bed to bust it out. I’m not going to share the look my wife gave me when I told her I was shaving in the kitchen tonight. lol

Alright, so down to the ~~blending~~ lathering! I brought everything out to my kitchen totally forgetting a mirror again! Sorry u/mayana8828, i really can’t do this blind shaving thing!

I scooped out a bunch of soap knowing that I was going to have to have a lot of water, I went big on the scoop!

Now say it with me: “WILL IT BLEND!?”

It produced quite the drippy lather but it worked! I did have to pull out a basting brush to spread it on my face but thankfully I was in the kitchen and had one handy!

Daily Theme Justification: Lū’au is like grown up fruit punch and IDK about you but fruit punch is one of the sweetest gourmand drinks I can think of!

Relevant Post Shave & Frag: All scents small like sticky sweet beverages! Lū’au is sweet fruit punch, Agua Fresca is the adult version with alcohol!

I’m not sure when or how I received this set because it’s been a long while since I’ve had it. It was either through the bazaar or via PIF. Either way, I never use it, except for the Lather Games. It’s not that it smells bad or doesn’t perform well; it does. I am just not fond of gourmand soaps in general, and smelling like coffee throughout the day just isn’t appealing to me. Plus, I hate things that smell so tasty and sweet, yet they’re not edible.

Today’s Challenge: Shaving in the kitchen was a bit odd, especially since my soap smelled better than the coffee that I actually brewed. Soap/aftershave should never make you question if you want to try it as a food.

Great performance from Catie's Bubble's sugary sweet Saturday Morning. Paired it with the equally sugary sweet Remote Learning aftershave and the Remote Learning fragrance, which matches the aftershave in name.

Gourmand scents are just not my thing. Voices, however, hits the Gourmand theme it goes for without being overwhelmingly sweet. This is one of the few scents my wife loves every time she smells it. It just blows her mind how Ben was able to get the rice note down perfectly.

Huge shoutout to /u/Priusaurus for today's soap smush. This stuff is pure cake batter. Very gourmand. The frag is also very gourmand, I got to spend all day smelling like an ice cream parlor, and I loved it. Lastly the splash also meets our gourmand criteria as a tea inspired scent featuring black tea, vanilla, and, for some reason, strawberries extremely prominently. I really don't understand why this isn't a strawberry scent when it's a main component to my nose.

Today's shave went well. I'm getting better with the D plate on this Karve. This is my first time using TSF, and the base is good enough that I want a tub, but it's not so good I'm willing to buy a random scent. Going to have to find one that really captivates me and Cakehole is not it. I hate this scent. This is what cakes should smell like, not people. This is weird because I absolutely love A Whiff of Wafflecone. I think it's something about Cakehole being a thing that just smells like cake, where Wafflecone evokes a mood and experience. Wafflecone is better at being a metaphor, while Cakehole is just cake. I hope that makes sense.

I shaved in my kitchen. It went fine. I'm used to shaving without a mirror at this point thanks to these challenges. It also helps that I normally shave without my glasses on, so it's not like I can see myself in the mirror anyways.

Today's photo contest theme is Sugar & Sweets. We're double dipping on the donuts to hit this theme, but this time I've got fancy donuts. I oringally was going to use the doll shaped like a person to create a serial killer scene, but they didn't have any with eyes at the donut shop this afternoon, so they don't look enough like people for that. Oh well. #photocontest

Challenge: I’ve given you church kitchen shave. Prepare for church camp kitchen shave. The problem here is this is a legit, licensed commercial kitchen and I’m not screwing with that by shaving in the food prep or hand washing sinks so I headed over to the scullery . But…would the judges consider the scullery good enough?

Bring in the Airbud rule. I absolutely cannot shave in the food prep sink. There is no rule saying I cant shave in the fridge. So I took a bowl, unzipped my handy zip-off hike pants, and shaved in the fridge.

Talent Soap Factory is a new one for me. I was pleasantly surprised with the lather performance, as admittedly, my expectations weren't high for an etsy seller. I would say the majority of Talent Soap Factory's catalog is gourmands with a few other scents mixed in whose notes are verbatim with preblend sites. I settled on Cakehole for who knows why. It definitely smells like a cupcake or cake loaded with frosting. While it isn't unpleasant, I am glad I only have the soap as I imagine any sort of scent longevity on the face could become too much. Summer Break Soaps Icy Stare was a great match to put the ICE in icing. Since I don't think I have any gourmand fragrances, Stirling Soap Co. Haverford was the sweetest frag that came to mind. All in all, I do really like the TSF soap performance and would love to see some development in the scent offerings.

I think today's daily challenge is the one that annoys my wife the most. Who cares when you shave on the back porch, lather on your knee, or mix ice cubes in your sink of water, but when you start shaving in the kitchen, that's when the side-eyeing starts.
