    Day 21

    • Brush: Frank Shaving – 20mm Synthetic Silvertip
    • Razor: Gillette Executive Fatboy
    • Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
    • Lather: Talbot Shaving – Heliopteris Soap
    • Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving – Seaforth! Heather Splash
    • Fragrance: Spearhead Shaving – Seaforth! Heather EdT

The first sentence of this soap description is “Heliopteris is my take on a Fougere”. So that checks off today’s theme right off the bat! Then is goes on to say “The name Heliopteris is a mash-up of the words ‘Helio’, which means Sun, and ‘Pteris’, which is a genus of fern. Together, meaning Sun Fern.” I’m super happy they told us that because I was thinking this soap was named after a helicopter dinosaur. I relied on AI to bring my vision to life this time. If u/Priusaurus is half Prius/half dinosaur, I think having Heliopteris be half Helicopter/half dinosaur only makes sense. It’d be pretty crazy if those existed. Maybe they can workshop this idea for the next Jurassic World movie. I can see it now, Dr. Wu is tired of creating dinosaurs that are just dinosaurs, so he genetically modifies them to be half machine and half dinosaur. Someone call Michael Crichton! There’s something here! And maybe a soapmaker can get to work on a soap dedicated to a helicopter dinosaur! With rockets!!! 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀 AND FLAMES!!!!!!!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Heliopteris brings an exceptional fougere experience with its rich, earthy, and green notes. When I lathered it up, it smelled like I was stepping into a lush fern forest, where every breath is filled with the fresh, green aroma of nature. After the shave, I used Heather by Spearhead Shaving. This aftershave is scented with really nice blend of lavender, moss, and herbal notes. To my nose, it is pretty heavy on the lavender and I thought it complements the Heliopteris soap perfectly, extending the green, botanical experience with some more floral notes. To carry the fougere theme throughout the day, I finished with a few sprays of Heather EdT. This eau de toilette obviously matches the scent of the splash, which I really enjoyed. I picked up a sample splash and had to buy the EdT. Heather really does have the essence of a classic fougere with its harmonious blend of lavender, green notes, and a touch of spice. It’s a scent that feels timeless yet modern, grounding yet uplifting. #FOF

    With Talbot’s Heliopteris, so bright,
    Today’s shave was pure delight.

    Like fresh meadow green,
    Starting the morning off right.

    Daily/Special Challenge: /u/Enndeegee Appreciation Day

In his home, Enndeegee was firm,
Hating scrubs was his only concern.
    He crafted a list,
    No scrubs would persist,
To clear his domain was his term.

To show I'm no scrub, I'll display,
With Catie's Bubbles in my shave today.
    Lathering fine and grand,
    Smooth cheeks, you understand,
    Enndeegee, my shave's a triumph!

    With Catie's Bubbles Blugere aftershave,
    And Spearhead Seaforth! Heather, hooray!
    Aftershave soothes with grace,
    EdT's scent, I embrace,
In grooming, a blend that lasts all day!

    Enndeegee will rejoice with glee,
When the Lather Games are done, you'll see.
    Every scrub he'll track down,
    In his triumph, no frown,
His domain scrub-free, as it should be.

    Fragrance description

Blugère is a favorite around here for a reason. It's fantastic, no other way to put it. It's like walking through a wild blueberry patch in the woods.

Spearhead Seaforth! Heather, though, I'm not too big of a fan. It's not bad by any sense of the imagination, but just not one I'd reach for often. I think it is because it is a tad "soapy."

    Now onto the shave!

No, I wouldn't, but really, who knows?
    Don't take heed in these words;

    In these poems I can't take any pride;
I know that they seem rather snide.
    I can't help but be sad;
    The Games drive players mad!
And the dino's been broken by pride.

Truth be told, I don't know what he's done.

Just in case this is something you don't know

I've no praise I can say for fougères.

That's not how you pronounce fougères.
Yeah, I know; just get out of my hair.

At dawn’s ungodly hour, I stumble blind,
With bleary eyes and hair a wild disgrace.
Spearhead! Heather soap to soothe my mind,
    Lavender and bergamot save face.

    Puma 52, my lethal foe,
Gleams menacingly in the dimmest light.
Hess Barber boar brush, bristles rough as woe,
Geranium and sage, a fragrant fight.

With trembling hand, I lather like a loon,
Oakmoss and coumarin, chaos in the air.
Each stroke a gamble, bloodbath coming soon,
My nose intact? A miracle, I swear.

At last, I slap on aftershave, half mad,
Fougère Angelique—this shave ain’t half bad!

There once was a shaver named Priusaurus
Who’s face hiding was really sus.
    While his bits got old
    The judges were sold
And they chose to ignore all of us.

Fougère, the smell of ferns if ferns had a smell. Or more specifically the outdoors. Now I want to get the elephant in the room out of the way. There was some discussion on whether this was a fougère but as noted it is specifically called one on the soaper’s site. The label has ferns all over it. We can debate endlessly what it really is, but for the sake of the rules it fits as noted in the above linked post. (Though I am skeptical Rogue lets that out the door without some input so maybe it is a Fougère) But what to do with the smell of outside? Well, the first thing we do is take a day off work. Second is to curse that u/oldhiker day was yesterday. But my work schedule is what it is because “Work Sucks.” You got the backyard shave yesterday, but the full circus today. Third thing we do is realize my daughter also has a day off camp and I’m watching her today. That means, fourth thing is tell her “Get in the car we’re going shaving.” (Addendum, son’s camp was canceled this morning due to a water main break. So, both kids got dragged into this).
See, the judges seem to really want public shaves. They just collect legendary points. It’s true u/priusaurus has basically patented the outdoors/in public shave. But I would contend doing it in the urban jungle is just wrong and perhaps a bit played out. In fact, it’s the antithesis of shaving. Now while u/airbudruler’s relationship with the verb “shave” is of some debate, the one thing he absolutely gets right is that shaving is a selfcare mentality. A relaxing bit of our day. This doesn’t preclude hijinks. New challenges (like leg shaving or figuring out how to balance your gear for a picture) can add a feeling of accomplishment to the shave. That feeling you get when you conquer a new battle or learn a new skill. But shaving on a street corner? That’s just stressful, you can’t enjoy it. You gotta rush, worry about being shooed away, etc. Shaving while mowing the lawn? That’s just a chore. Shaving while being sprayed in the face by a water toy? Not bad, but I did that last year.
No, if you want to get in touch with shaving as relaxation you have to go “touch grass,” as the zoomers might say. Get into nature as it were. u/onionmiasma came so close with is beach shave last year probably because it was my idea! But in the end, he landed at The Bean shaving in the urban jungle with his underwear on the ground. So sad! So, I’m going to execute the relaxing outdoor shave this year to show everyone how it should be. I’m going to go back to my hoosier (no not Indiana, the local definition) roots here, and take y’all on a hike. While I’m heartend by the number of people who did this yesterday, unlike everyone who packed it up and went home, we’re gonna enjoy the great outdoors for a day, in solitude (uhh well trio-tude, remember I got the kids today.)
First up, local conservation area. Missouri has a strange conservation system. Almost 10% of our land is some sort of park. Lots of open land even before you get to the farms. This particular conservation area is of the “untamed wilderness” variety. Which means a poorly marked trail and otherwise left to grow on its own. Thick with trees. We’re gonna hike down into the forest, where ferns grow, and shave. But first, we need our lather plate. Then settle, lather, and shave
Having shaved, a quick stop by the post office to send u/priusaurus a little gift, then off to a giant nuclear waste pile. Yes, you read that right. See, Missouri refined a lot of uranium and plutonium for the atomic bomb program. Like all things in the 1950s this was done poorly and contaminated a huge area. The cleanup resulted in a 75-foot-tall, 41 acre, pile of rocks covering the container with the most contaminated soil. It’s a [DOE “Interpretative Site”] (https://www.energy.gov/lm/weldon-spring-site-interpretive-center) now. You can take a set of stairs up the pile. It’s the tallest non-building point in the metro area. My daughter and I are going to see how far we can throw a line-of-sight ham signal from here. u/absenth did some math for me and came up with possibly as far as Kansas City. Now, I say this to make a broader point. Maybe we can bury the toxic sludge of this urban shave obsession that has polluted lather games 75ft under a pile of rocks, in a lead lined container, like this radioactive waste, and use the resulting pile to reach new distances! (It’s over 100 degrees up here BTW, so not enough time to shave before heat exhaustion sets in. Giant limestone pile, the sun, physics.)
Finally, my kids and I are going to go to yet another conservation area, right next to the waste pile. This one is “ponds, ponds, and lakes” (and old military bunkers, see uranium processing above). We’re going fishing. Why? We like fishing. It’s relaxing. It’s selfcare. A fitting end to a day of fern smells and outdoors play. Y’all can keep your urban jungle. If I’m gonna shave outside, in public, I’m gonna do it somewhere relaxing.
For #photocontest: Air. My lather plate was a plant! They make Air. For #fof, these are all Zingari products, but the soap and frag both compliment this outdoor day. Whether it’s a fougère or not Moose Illumani smells like the outdoors. And The Highlander is “olfactory journey through the majestic Scottish Highlands.” Another not quite fougère but conjuring the great outdoors. I bridged them with unscented because I had nothing else that made sense. Kids also got a highlander spray so we can all enjoy the great outdoors smelling great together. They were happy.

    • Lather: Spearhead Shaving - Seaforth! Heather
    • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Logbook Splash
    • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann - Fougère Angelique #FOF

    Fougère Theme:

Come on it’s Seaforth! Heather. Not much justification needed, but on the Spearhead site it is called a classic fougère created for them by Shawn Maher. Noble Otter says Logbook is a woody fougère. Finally, Fougère Angelique has it in the name.

    Fragrant Theme:

I don’t focus on classic fougère scents much. I tend to get tired of the ferny/mossy notes before it wears off. I like the scents when first applied, but they are often not what I want for 4-6 hours. Makes today a bit more tricky since I don’t have many classic fougère post shaves. Heather is still a great scent, and I love the green impression it gives. I like to imagine I’m back in Scotland hiking amongst the heather when I use this. I’ve been to Scotland a couple times. I backpacked for a couple weeks before the school year started. Then after all the year end stuff was over, went to play golf at St. Andrews - Old Course. Absolutely a beautiful place, and any excuse to relive that is welcome. Logbook is similar to Heather. They pair pretty well without any clashing of discordant notes. It might have a slightly stronger citrus top note, but still a very earthy green scent to me. I recently picked up Fougère Angelique on sale. I was curious to see how the Angelique/Gothique pair would contrast so picked up a sample of that too. Angelique is one I think I can wear all day. It has a bright citrus punch lightening the earthiness of oak moss. Floral notes come through a little better. It is a bright, sunny day today, and Angelique fits well with that. Overall, the scents have so much in common. It is no surprise that they work well together. Not my favorite category, but I can see why it is a classic.

The part of “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” that stuns me when a caller misses one:

    1.

Oh, what to use for a Fougère?

I guess, I could use Beaudelaire.

    Instead I’ll say nope!

    And go with the soap.

That has a classic scent by Shawn Maher.

    2.

    This Friday is Fougère’s turn.

The scent that is French for a fern.

    The scents you can tell,

    Are a classic cologne smell.

If it’s by A&E it may burn.

    3.

When guys have to shave their legs,

    This tricky task really begs,

For a soap with no faults.

    Maybe one made from smaltz?

Try Yard Raised Fresh Chicken Eggs.

Armonía is a tobacco fougere made by CGC and fragrance by HoM. To me, it is sharp. Right off, it’s green and aggressive, perhaps astringent which fades away to allow the tobacco, not sweet but dry, and undertone greens to come through. Distinctly a fougere, but also distinctly different than what is out there. My memory for this is of my dad. He used Brut AS my entire life, which I didn’t realize until recently was a fougere. In my mind, it’s the stereotype for fougeres and armonía brings back that memory with that sharp upfront note that I remember so vividly. Not all the fougere I have used do this. I can remember my dad giving me a yellow and white disposable razor with a cap, a handful of Barbasol, and we would shave together when I was maybe 4 or 5. After that shave, we would each get a little splash of Brut. I usually used one tiny drop because it was too much for my developing nose.

    June 21, 2024 – LG 21: FougERAS TOUR Friday

    • Brush: Maggard Purple Swirl Synthetic
    • Razor: Gillette Tech
    • Blade: Voskhod (5)
    • Lather: Wholly Kaw – Fougere Mania
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Fern
    • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann – Fougere Gothique

    Challenge first today:

Today we shave with a fougere
For endeegee LG rules he did not care
    Celebrating no scrubs
    And wet lathery bubbs
In lather games all plays are fair

The tidbit the podcast about WK Fern Concerto was a bit funny, especially consider WK offers fougere mania, parfaite, and bouquet all as fougere options.

For #FOF mania is a bit citrusy and slightly floral take. Fern (Wills recreation/tribute to Fougere Royale which I of course haven’t smelled) is clean and crisp green, with mossy undertones. Gothique is on the opposite end of the spectrum, super earthy and damp, mushroom like. Though hints of bitter citrus peek through that actually feel more prominent as time goes on (at ~2 hours) which is unique in that I feel citrus is often the first to fade. I know it’s popular in these parts, but I’m still partial to its lighter and brighter sister scent FA.

For our #PHOTOCONTEST we went with Bokeh Balls. Who would have thought LG photos would take center stage over T Swift at Wembley?! Clearly r/wetshaving is a global phenomenon.

    June 21, 2024 - Fougère Friday

    • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts Matterhorn w/ 28 mm Maggard SHD
    • Razor: Blackland Blackbird
    • Blade: Wizamet (35)
    • Lather: Catie's Bubbles - Blugere
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann - Fougere Classique
    • Fragrance: Southern Witchcrafts - Fougere Nemata

Challenge: I wrote two. Choose your favorite.

A fougere of blueberry and moss
Goes together like Rachel and Ross
    I think it smells great
    I'm sure most can relate
It you can't, then xir, that's your loss

    A fougere topped with blueberry
    Catie’s Bubbles scent most merry
    It made a mean lather
    With brush knot of badger
Now my face is no longer hairy

Some people don't like fougères. And, those people are ~~wrong~~ entitled to their opinion. I love fougères. There’s a nice variety in the genre. You can find old fashioned oakmoss heavy fougères. And powdery, lavender forward barbershop fougères. Or green, aromatic fougères. Armonia is an example of a tobacco fougere. There’s even fruity fougères, like Passione. Blugere is fruity. Blueberry is a fun addition. There's lots of blueberry goodness in this fragrance. The fougere leans towards green notes. The lavender is slightly soapy. The oakmoss is toned down in favor of a woody scent. It’s fantastic.

Fougère Classique is based on the original formula for Fougère Royale. It’s mossy and floral. The base is composed of woody, leathery, resinous, and amber notes. The heavy base notes linger for quite a while. The floral notes soften the fragrance with an aromatic touch. Fougère Royale is a historically important fragrance. It’s cool to smell Will’s revised take. It's classic and masculine. It's not the best for hot weather.

Fougère Nemata is another fougère that plays with fruit. Only this time, it’s strawberry. It’s aromatic and green. There’s a bitter note, like crushed leaves or stems. The strawberry nestles in the bitterness, which makes it feel like it’s picked fresh off the plant. There are some floral notes that flow in and out of perception. It’s brighter than Blugere, but less fruity. I really like the aromatic, bitter quality of this fragrance. I feel like a strawberry.

#photocontest - Cactus. Fun fact: I bought this cactus for the photo and got stuck as soon as I got home.
