My first lather games here we goooooooo! Never had the chance to use a Zingari man product so I waited until today to get into the samples I got from the Maggard meet up. I took my mom there with me because it happened to be in between where we live (about a 2 hour drive for each of us) and it was really close to my birthday. Wouldnt ya know she won a karve razor and immediately gave it to me! So I waited until today to try that as well. The gent soap smells wonderful and the balm was really nice too.

Believe it or not since I started wetshaving, I only ever used a straight razor. So this was my first DE shave. The karve razor is a work of art. But it scares me more than the straight from my inexperience. Got through it without too much damage. There was some...

    • Post Shave: Dr. Jon's - 8th Dimension splash

    • Fragrance: Catie's Bubbles - Blugere

    ROTY

Man super bummed Dr. Jon's is no more. I bought a bunch of samples when he announced he was done and everything lathers well and easily and I loved his simple scents in the essentials line. All are fantastic options for daily drivers. His products are vegan so should fit the bill for today's theme.

My single edge shave today was provided by my first ever straight razor acquisition, the Friedrich Herder Abraham Sohn 49. It was purchased and restored from the Razor Emporium and It has seen me through the first butcher jobs to getting super good enough shaves haha. Every once in a while when my stropping is just right and my technique is good I get shaves that surprise me in their quality and they always make a smile reach across my ugly mug.

Shaving everyday is definitely new for me though. After the karve shave yesterday, I just did a single pass against the grain. Worked out pretty, pretty, pretty good. I hope everyone is enjoying the first week of the Lather games.

    Good luck and God's speed.

    • Lather: Captain's Choice - Italia soap

    • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Unscented Splash

    • Fragrance: Catie's Bubbles - Blugere

    ROTY

Just a quick single pass shave today. Also my first time using a soap from Captain's Choice. The name Italia made me feel it was a perfect representation of almond a Classic Italian shaving soap scent. The soap was extremely soft and I rather liked the subtle sweet smell of almond while I shaved. Doesn't have much staying power though.

I thought the perfect almond aftershave was one that wouldn't get in the way of the almond soap so I went unscented. Respect the almond.

And to honor the Great u/RedMosquitoMM for his previous victory in the trials and tribulations of the lather games 2022, I offer this poem of sorts because I read alot of Dr. Seuss to my kiddo and because the bards they sing of it.

The great Red Mosquito ate bedtime Dorito's much to his partners dismay

The crumbs in the bed made them stick to his head and they entered his back hairs to stay

He gets up each day in a particular way, a stout and devoted wet shaver

He tells all he knows to his internet shave bros and engages in questionable online behavior.

So cheers to a guy a champion of shavers I wish you all the booze and sexual partners of all flavors

And may you live long and avoid trouble for misbehaving as you sling youre big ol dong across the pages of r/wetshaving

Ok tried to be as scientific as possible so I collected a bunch of data during my shave. Also wanted to begin by saying that Fougere Nemeta isn't just one of my favorite spring specific seasonal scents, it's one of my favorites of all time. She really did a wonderful job with this one and I couldn't imagine not having it around. So thanks Southern witchcraft for making amazing products. I appreciate you.

    • Fragrance: Catie's Bubbles - Blugere

    ROTY

So I find this sub and all the nice people here send me on a journey to discover all these wonderful artisans and introduce me to the world of fragrances that are equally as awesome. Then what do the powers at be instruct us to do? Spend hard earned money on this trash!?!? What the hell. I bought the tiniest can they had of this Edge brand gel? I then sprayed it directly into my hand like a Neanderthal. Smells sorta like lemons and a cheap aquatic Cologne I probably wore in high school. Did one pass... I survived.

Used Old Spice aftershave for the first time which was also available my local CVS. It's fine but not really for me. A grab from the PIF table at the Maggard meet up for use in the lather games. My old lady said I smell awful haha.

As for my own fragrance if I could create one, I would love to make a scent based on smells I encounter working as a production Brewer. When a big malty beer is mashing in you can smell that sweet delicious malt outside the building. Dark beers like porters contain chocolate notes or more intensely sharp roasted notes like that in coffee. Opening bags of fresh hot pellets of the many thousands of varieties and smelling them right as you dump them into the kettle, or into the fermenter as in a dry hop. Dumping the hop and yeast out of the bottom of the tank can be magical too so fruity or maybe spicy and herbal like the noble varieties of England. Or smell like meat or Sulphur depending on the yeast strain and malt bill. The crazy funk when the spent grain man decides not to pick the trailer and it makes the whole tap room smell like feet. Dropping super sacks of malted barley has a really specific smell of the earth. Walking hop fields and splitting fresh cones down the middle to rub the yellow lupulin glands and warm the oils to awaken the aromatics. The sweat of the Brewer himself! It's usually well over 100 degrees on the deck. I think a scent based on this stuff would be more interesting than a scent based on finished beers.

What could be more spicy than Old Spice? Why not get some more use out of this old spice Original aftershave which is destined to end up in a box until next year's lather games. I know my grandpa used this aftershave. A walk in his shoes? I will say that this disgusting "cream" that ejaculated out of this old spice tube was by far and away the worst shaving product I have ever used. The Shave was awful. Do not buy this product.

Lately as far as my other hobbies go I have been working really hard on jazz saxophone. I have a teacher that I study alto with in Chicago and I play with a guitarist friend and mostly just work on jazz standards. It's fucking hard and I do creep around on some sax forums to pick up what i can. Here's a sax word of the day:

u/Eructate generously sent me the smoosh that provided today's shave. Thank you sir!

I love Maggards and they get as much of my business as possible unless I'm ordering directly from the artisans which I also like to do. If you ever get a chance to visit the store it is absolutely magnificent inside. I just got a vintage straight razor back that Brad honed for me and he did a fantastic job. The soap functioned flawlessly for me, but I just don't think I'm that into barbershop scents.

The aftershave I chose was Barrister and Manns Fougere Angelique which was listed as a collaboration with Maggards. I had no idea. My lady really loves this one. Strong scent strength though so I don't wear it to work. I purchased fougere gothique from Maggards last time I was there and I really like them both.

Link below for the daily question I posted today. I think I did that right... Hope everyone has a swell Saturday!

A day of coffee Scents! I love coffee. Like all day long sippin'. Today's shave features the amazing Caties Bubbles Irish coffee soap. A fairly heavily used grab from the Maggards meet up PIF table for this very day. Never a complaint about the performance of Caties Bubbles products. It was really cool to meet the man behind the Bubbles at the meet up. We had a nice chat and I picked up a soap and splash set of the blugere. I loved it so much I went online and bought the EDP too.

The London Razors Chapter 2 coffee and contemplation splash is also really great. A complex coffee forward scent that was created to develope throughout the day and in my experience it does just that. Solid scent strength maybe an 8. Long lasting. So fitting that today's sponsor spotlight is London Razors and I had a product I enjoy to use today to honor their hard work.

I shaved in the kitchen today and had to be quick to get outa there before my wife came home and caught me. She would be none too pleased to have my shaving in the kitchen. I finished the shave and was sneaking out of the kitchen clutching my hardware and software as she was coming in the back door. Perfecto! Here's photo evidence of my kitchen shave. Have a good day yall!!

My musical soap was Adagio by Barrister and Mann a sample I purchased for today from Maggards. I rather enjoyed the soap but couldn't really decide what I thought it smelled like. Which I don't mind. Performance was great. Adagio in a musical sense means to play at a slow tempo. Im about to play some saxophone at the brewery so I'm going to try and chill out and play slow and clean this evening in honor of Adagio!

Went with the Noble Otter bare splash as a representation of silence. Silence is the canvas for which music is written upon so if you love music you must also love silence!

Here's a drawing by yours truly of the Adagio label. It looks like my 2 year old kid drew it. Challenge did not state it had to be good.

Today on this summer day I am the island man. Gave myself one hell of a shave today. I have only used island man a couple of times but its quickly becoming one of my favorite scents of the summer. It's only available in the summer too so what could be more seasonally specific than that. My first splash with menthol too. I like it but it's pretty intense. I got a splash from them with the glacial menthol treatment and im not going to lie im afraid to use it. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has experienced the glacial blast and can tell me their experience with it.

I did my best to get a color coordinated photo showing the blue soap and splash and the blue lather bowl on a ratty blue rug. The handle on the light colored Simpson brush was closer to the light label than my other brush. So it'll have to do. I'm also traveling and I only really travel with the Simpson synthetic.

For the challenge I went against the grain for the first half and just continued on for the whole shave. Maybe a testament to the Christopher Bradley. It really is a fantastic piece of kit. I have gotten better at using it during the lather games too.

I have already been advised to get osma alum on the sub but I havnt bought any yet because my crumbling maggard alum block is still holding on. So I do in fact wish it was osma alum but alas I am cheap and refuse to buy another until this one has disappeared entirely from existence.

Hello again! Had a superb shave with Southern Witchcrafts Autumn Ash. I have to say Southern Witchcrafts has really become a personal favorite of mine since stumbing on them through the sub. I love the approach to the scents and the soap has one of the best performing bases I have tried thus far vegan or not. My first time using this scent and I rather like it. Smoky and woody, with some Autumn spice which comes together to me maybe like an incense with maple sweetness remniscent of a spiced cookie. It's very Fall so should fit the theme nicely.

For the challenge I tried to get a pic of some hairs suspended in the foam on the blade of the straight razor (in its natural state) but I also wiped it on a paper towel so you can really see it all splayed out and gruesome for the kids to see. Just did one pass against the grain to actually get stubble.

My first time using a Taylor of Old Bond Street product. So soft. The scent was light and pleasent. I ended up using an entire sample of the stuff to hedge my bets lathering with the sock. I choose a Halloween sock that was thin hoping it would keep it from being able to absorb too much lather. Honestly I think the nubs in my Stirling silicone lather bowl saved my ass and I was still able to whip one up decent enough. A little pasty but I gave the sock a squeeze and some water dripped off into the bowl which after I agitated it In, it actually made a Purdy good lather. Just a one pass shave. Here's some pics as proof. I was going to use the brush but decided to go all the way with the socko. I miss mankind...

I fuggin' love fougeres! Especially the ones I used today. Just one pass on this shave. Brad absolutely killed it on the hone job on this Dubl Duck razor. If you ever need honing I highly suggest Maggards. It gives an amazing feeling shave. I had to get used to the square point because it's so pristine. It's really perfectly square and sharp. It's awesome for precision work around the sideburns and mustache but I made some marks on my strop from moving too fast and letting the tip drag a bit I think. During the first shave I actually cut my self with the tip from being haphazard with my angles. Today I was more careful so the shave and stropping went much better. On my Friedrich Herder Abraham Sohn 49 the tip is rounded off and you can get away with alot more with out any damage. The Dubl Duck kinda feels like a race car in comparison. The blades handle really differently and it makes me want to try more.

    Challenge:

    Brush, bowl. Razor time.

    Lathering up. Smelling fine.

    Splash last. Seize the carp!

Here's a video. I did it with a straight razor and only shaved the stache so it's quick and I found it rather satisfying. I have never shaved my lip with a straight razor and I ended up leaving a pencil thin mustache under each nostril that I had to go back and get. I also almost cut my lip at one point. But somehow I didn't. Goodbye mustache my old friend. We'll meet again.

Lather, as with every HOM product I have tried, was just fantastic. I bought a set of Eigengrau I have been saving for this winter. I thought the balm would go nicely with the smush of santa noir. It really did and I absolutely love this scent. I thought it was wintery enough for Christmas in July plus it was already in my dopp kit for tomorrow.

For the challenge I wanted to take a moment to say something nice about everyone here. If I lose the challenge point for not choosing a specific person, so be it. Since before I had started wet shaving I was lucky to find this sub right away. My very first soap purchases were from artisan soap makers because of the passion and knowledge of the people right here and I'm so glad yall were at it already so I could learn from everyone's guidance. People's willingness to take time out of their busy lives to send some of their soaps or share hardware with strangers from the internet really took me aback. To be honest my experience in wetshaving would not have been as enjoyable without the kick ass community of awesome people here on the sub.

So in short thanks so much to everyone that contributes to or has contributed to r/wetshaving and especially those of you who take the time to show the new guys some love. It goes a long way. There is so much knowledge available here for anyone interested that was built entirely by the experience of its members free of charge. That is awesome.

Also thank you to the lather games judges who work Hella hard to make all this happen for us. A labor of love no doubt so it's only fitting we send some love your way too.

Getting close now… I chose Eigengrau for today's shave in soap and aftershave form. I don't know how much more winter a soap could get. It contains cold air… Been sitting on this set a while now and in use I really really enjoy it. I'm not exactly sure why to be honest. Both my wife and my friend's wife, separately from one another, told me it smells like mold. I don't really pick up much of that but find it cooling with a light powder type smell with unique elements of fir and lichen adding a bit of mystery. I'm pretty into it.

For today's challenge I'm lucky in that when I was starting to learn with the straight razor, I read to begin working on your off hand technique right from the get go and that's what I did. I don't feel very disadvantaged using my left for the most part. Maybe only slightly so but I was able to carry on without much trouble.

Well for this wild card Wednesday I decided to use an unlabeled sample from Eleven shaving acquired at the Maggard meet up. No idea what the scent is which is what makes it a wild card! Smells just like a soap. Performance was A OK. I don't know if I'll get the point for this, but oh well. Sometimes that's just the way she goes.

I had a great plan to use Okra slime harvested from my tiny farm for today, but I am traveling for work and the Okra isn't ready for harvest for another week or 2. Maybe next year.

I'm pretty disappointed that I'm traveling which is stopping me from getting a full shave den picture. Here is a pic of most of the den that I already had on my phone. It's not complete but probably 70 percent of it or so. It's the best I can do!

    Closer still…

Today I'm using a sample of Barrister and Mann's Lavender shaving soap purchased from Maggards for today. I thought it would go nicely with the sample of Lavender interrupted they were giving out at the meet up. I'm not sure I am the biggest fan of Lavendercentric scents but everything is top notch performance wise and the combo is pleasant and unobtrusive.

I did snap some pics of my back porch outside shave. Just took the bowl of lather, my straight and a paper towel for wiping the blade off. I didn't have a portable mirror and used my reflection in a window. It was difficult to say the least and I abused my sideburns a little a gave myself a tiny wack on my chin. I don't reccomend it. At least my ⅞ width straight razor is like a snow shovel and I was able to whip out 1 shoddy pass very quickly. It's so hot in Chicago right now. At least I smell nice.

    Only 2 shaves remaining...

Today I shaved with what I have determined to be the absolute cheapest available lather product sold at Maggards. It is the Gillette brand regular shaving cream. Apparently this is the Maha jumbo offering with a whopping 33 percent extra for free! Lucky me… At 4.95 per 93 grams, it costs a wallet friendly 5 cents per gram. Cheaper than a Godrej puck at 6 cent per gram. (sold out at time of writing) Technically the Derby and Arko shave sticks would have been cheaper per gram, but they are both also sold out and I don't think I would buy any lather product in "stick" form. Smells like all the other crappy tube creams readily available from the store.

Went with the old spice classic aftershave because it was free to me, but is probably also very cheap when compared to artisan splashes I'm sure. So I think it fits the bill

The razor was a gift so although not particularly cheap it didn't cost me anything. I also only have 2 brushes and the Simpson classic is the cheaper of the 2.

I guess it feels good saving money. But to be honest I'd rather use all the great artisan software I have and support those who make it. Hopefully this tube of crap will last many lather games as it will surely be packed away until next games. Photographic evidence below.

Went with Barrister and Mann's Lavender Interrupted for the fragrance choice again because it was also free to me. I wore this one yesterday as well for lavender day and had the chance to meet up with Mr and Mrs. u/OnionMiasma for beers at my work. We were both wearing the same fragrance and apologized to each other for its strength, which I found pretty hilarious. To be honest though, I couldn't tell because I could only smell myself. It was wonderful to link up with another member of the sub and I really had a good time hanging. With the enjoyable evening u/tsrblke and family provided earlier this month, I'm 2 for 2 on meeting awesome people from the sub. Both were perfect gentleman and would love to meet up again sometime. Open invite to anyone in or traveling through Chicago, shoot me a message, well crush some beers!

Cheers and have an awesome day everyone!

    1 shave remains…

More Maggard samples for today's shave. Very pleasant sandalwood scent that sits right in the goldilocks zone for Scent strength in my mind.

    FIN.

Well I was made and reside in the USA.

The Simpson Classic #1 synthetic brush was made on the Isle of Man which is an internally self governing dependency of the British crown. Its inhabitants are British citizens. Thanks Wikipedia!

The Karve Shaving Christopher Bradley was 100% made in Canada.

The lather and after shave products were made in Provence, France.

Well it's been a ride. Though I know I didn't set any records with my lather games performance, I originally set out to shave 30 days in a row using a different scent each day, to do as many of the challenges as I was reasonably able and to have fun. I feel like I accomplished this and am overall happy with the experience. I'm hoping to build on this for next year incorporating 30 brands, hopefully get some more of the hardware scavenger points, take more and better photos etc. Thanks to everyone who did so much more than I to help to make the lather games the weird creature that it is. I also met some friends along the way. What could be better than that?

Cheers yall, thanks again for making my first lather games a good one.
