Down On The Farm For AA - Day 2

    • Brush: Omega 81151
    • Razor: Merkur 37C
    • Blade: Rapira Platinum Lux (2)
    • Lather: Stirling - Scots Pine Sheep
    • Post Shave: Stirling - Baker Street splash
    • Post Shave: Stirling - Glacial unscented AS balm

Day 2 of AA, where every day will be a Mutton Monday but not every day will be a Monday! It's another day of herding sheep and pigs. The Sheep felt so good on my face after a morning of getting battered in the waves. This is just one of those bases that more people need to try because it is top fucking tier. This brush is soft, and probably softer than I would have liked, but I'm not sure what the full break in is going to look like with this. It definitely eats soap like a good little piggy as I had to go back to the tub twice. Here are the before and after pics.

On to enjoying the rest of this first day of vacation. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

    • Blade: Rapira Platinum Lux (3)
    • Lather: Stirling - Scots Pine Sheep
    • Post Shave: Stirling - Baker Street splash
    • Post Shave: Stirling - Glacial unscented AS balm

Another day of wrangling sheep and pigs down on the farm. Today was the first day I didn't have to go back to the tub for a reload with this brush. Of course, I also loaded the brush like it owed me money so that could be a factor. Before and after brush pics here. I'm enjoying using the 37C for AA. This was my first razor when I started this journey 16 years ago. And while I got good shaves with it for many years, time, wisdom, technique and better lather skills have made for even better shaves with this bad boy.

Time for more coffee on a rainy Saturday morning. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

I feel like the official soundtrack of AA '24 for me should be Pink Floyd's Animals album. I've got Sheep. I've got Pigs. My Dogs are roaming around the house wondering what the hell I'm doing behind the closed bathroom door each morning.

This brush continues to break in nicely. Before and after pics here. Tips are beginning to split on me and I am liking the way this brush splays. For a soft boar, I also really like the lather quality I'm getting here v. my Semogue 1800. I've been able to get a beautiful sheen from the Sheep. All told, I think I've lost 2 hairs since Thursday so that's good as well.

On to a stormy Sunday we go. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

Another day of the $BarnyardChallenge. Yesterday's musical inspiration was Pink Floyd's Animals. Today, I'm thinking Pig Destroyer is the appropriate soundtrack. I think this boar knot is already bending to my will and now it's just a matter of getting the tips to split further. Before and after pics here. I don't have any complaints about this set up 5 days in. I feel like I chose a nice and easy soap/splash combo that's not going to annoy me over the next 25 days.

On to the coffee part of the morning and then it's off to Boston with the wife and dogs as our vacation rolls on. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

$BarnyardChallenge shave live from the Colonnade Hotel in Boston this morning. I don't usually schlep a full size shave set up with me, but since it's AA, I didn't have a choice. Thankfully, I had one last use of the sample splash left so I was able to save a little space. The brush continues its smooth break in with before and after pics here. The mutton base continues to kick ass and the shaves continue to be sublime. Not much more I could ask for.

Today's $BarnyardChallenge shave musical inspiration is this classic from Black Sheep.

I guess I should think about cleaning the pool now that I'm home. Or maybe consider something wholly unproductive on this vacation Tuesday. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

    Breaking in a boar + using Sheep= $BarnyardChallenge

Today's brush before and after. I really like this brush and it's ease of use. This one will be a keeper after AA concludes.

One week of using Stirling's mutton tallow and really dialing in the lather has led me to put this base in my top 3. Yea, it's that good.

Today's $BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by The Goats. The Goats put out one of the most underrated hip hop albums in the early-90s.

    $BarnyardChallenge Week 2...Let's Fucking Go!

This brush has been a breeze to break in. It might not be eating a ton of soap but it has zero problems making an awesome lather. Today's before and after photos here.

Baker Street is becoming one of my favorite Stirling scents. I could wear this splash every day with no problem and with no issues from alternativemusicgirl.

Speaking of music, today's $BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration is this little swinging ditty from Nine Inch Nails. For those of you breaking in boars, I got you with this.

Brush has lost 1 or maybe 2 hairs since this started so kudos to Omega. Today's before and after pics.

Today's $BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration is "Down On The Farm" from the UK Subs. It's a punk classic to add a little pep in your step on a Friday.

$BarnyardChallenge keeps trucking right along with Shave #13.

I slept like shit last night and I appreciated not even remotely thinking about what to shave with thanks to the austerity of this month. The shave was surprisingly great, even in a bleary-eyed state. This blade, however, is requesting to go to The Great Peanut Can Under The Sink. Thanks to not doing this month in Nightmare mode, I'm going to enjoy the luxury of changing the blade. Hell, I might even use a different brand of blade.

Brush before and after pics here. This piggie is definitely not a soap eater, but it feels really nice and lather quality I get from this brush is outstanding.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by Lamb of God. I've loved this band since their first album. I've seen them a bunch of times. When I've had a crap day at the office, I like to blast any album in the car on the way home. Their live album Killadelphia just fits my mood today.

I'm actually looking forward to dickholing Baker Street come September. The set was my LG24 prize.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by Band of Horses. I absolutely loved the first two albums, especially today's cut from the first album. This band just dropped off a hill for me after that.

I did a fine job nicking my chin and lip this morning. I felt like a total noob in doing so.

    Brush before and after pics.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by Alice in Chains. I loved Alice in Chains from the first riff of the "We Die Young" 12" when it showed up in the WBOR's mail back in 1990. I've worn out more copies of Facelift than I can count. I was like a kid on Christmas (or in my case Hanukkah) when I received Dirt from the record company...in a bag of dirt. I had the good fortune of seeing Layne in full form a couple of times, including standing right in front of the stage when they played on the Clash of the Titans tour. I was crushed when he died and refuse to listen to the current incarnation. And don't @ me with the whole "Jerry Cantrell wrote all the songs" bullshit. Anyway, we need a farm animal song and Alice in Chains wrote one of the best ones when they wrote Rooster.

Coffee awaits as does a dreary Sunday. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

Someone made a comment on W_E yesterday along the lines of "I always see people recommend Stirling but I never see anyone use it." That person has apparently never peeked under the covers over on this sub. Hell, I might end up doing a Stirling September for shits and giggle just out of spite to that person.

Today's brush before and after pics.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by Gruntruck, who were criminally underrated during the grunge era. They were from Seattle and revered by the other local bands of that time, but they never caught fire like the big names. One of their videos did make it on to a Beavis & Butthead episode, which gave them exposure. Two great albums in the early- to mid-90s and then a 2017 release after the death of lead singer Ben McMillan. I'm going back to their Push album for "Body Farm".

I think I'm going to sip some coffee and listen to this Gruntruck album. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by Ministry. I probably could have used this song for the first day or two of AA as I was starting to break in my boar brush. Another stellar shave as we enter the home stretch of AA.

Brush before and after pics. I'm definitely running out of ideas as to how to shoot these in my bathroom.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by Steely Dan. I've definitely had a love/hate relationship with this band. Like, I hated them for years and years. But a couple of years ago, I was staying at The Verb Hotel in Boston and they have record players in every room and Steely Dan's Aja happened to be one of the albums left in my room. Damn that album sounded so good on vinyl and that moment totally turned my opinion on the band. Now the Steely Dan catalog gets some play around the house when the mood is right. "Black Cow" is one of my faves from that Aja album.

This Sheep base really is so good and this tub is going to be around for awhile post-AA since this brush is not a soap eater.

Speaking of the brush, before and after pics here

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by Orville Peck. I am not a fan of country music produced after 1980. To me, it all sounds the same and is just way overproduced crap. And then along came Orville Peck with his debut album Pony harkening back to classic country sounds of yore. His baritone voice is awesome and the songs are top notch. Hell, I even saw him when he was here in the Pine Tree State and it was a cool experience. So let's give Pony as spin today, shall we?

Coffee is ready to spin my morning around. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

The Sheep base post-shave feel is fanfuckingtastic. I'm a little bored with this shave but the end is nigh and the lathers will be different soon.

Brush before and after pics here.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by the disco era. As a Gen Xer, I happily lived through the hair metal era (Out of the Cellar from Ratt is the greatest album of that era) which then got ushered into obscurity by the grunge era. But to get to either of those, we had to survive the disco era. Some of us had parents who got all decked out to hit the disco, maybe do some rails of cocaine there and dance into the wee hours (I can't attest to the cocaine with my parents, I think...). If nothing else, some of us remember sitting in the backseat of mom's or dad's car whille they were ripping a cigarette with the windows maybe open hearing the disco tunes come over the radio. If you were under the age of 10, like I was in those days, you probably really enjoyed this little ditty that was released in 1976. Yes, this might be as bad as getting Rick Rolled but I'm giving you "Disco Duck" this morning.

Coffee needs to start rolling around my system right now. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by Soul Asylum. I figured after yesterday's disco equivalent of "Baby Shark" that we needed something more adult. Grave Dancers Union was the album that brought them to the masses with songs like "Ruanway Train" and "Somebody to Shove". However, the album they released before that was actually...better. So for your Sunday, I give you Soul Asylum's And The Horse They Rode In On.

Sunday coffee is fantastic. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

Face is smooth as glass and I smell good. I'm looking forward to shaving with a couple of new acquisitions next week, but for now we Shepherd the Hogs along.

Speaking of hogs, brush before and after pics.

Because no one ever said "Thank fuck it's Monday", today's $BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration will be provided by everyone's favorite vegan death metallers, Cattle Decapitation. And yes, they are a bunch of vegans growling/screeching/gurgling/roaring about how humans are doing a fine job fucking up planet earth. And yes, Mondays and mellow music just don't mix well in my book. These aren't the days that u/visceralwatch 's piano and organ skills are going soothe. It's too bad his new album isn't out now, because it has a fucking rooster on the cover which would fit perfectly with this month's musical theme. Any way, on to vegan death metal we go!.

Thank the Universe for the magical bean juice. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

Not much more I can say about this set up. It's been a good one. I've had no regrets.

Brush before and after pics. I continue to be amazed by the fact that this brush has only shed two hairs.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by The Dead Weather. I love Jack White and have had his newest album No Name on repeat since it dropped. He's one of my favorite guitarists and the guy has a knack for writing songs. But none of his solo albums have any songs referring to farm animals. So I had to go back to his contributions with The Dead Weather to find one. I think "No Horse" is a good option for the theme.

Coffee is the only option in the mornings for me. Life doesn't begin without it. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

3 more shaves before freedom. We can do this.

    Brush before and after pictures.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by Conor Oberst. Whether under the Bright Eyes moniker or as himself, the man is a prolific songwriter. "Counting Sheep" from his Ruminations album is a nice easy way to start this Wednesday...

2 more shaves ahead. Today I realized that I've gone noseblind to the Baker Street splash. This has become one of my favorite Stirling scents, when I can smell it and appreciate it.

    Brush before and after pics.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration provided by Rage Against The Machine by way of Bob Dylan. "Maggie's Farm" keeps me on theme.

Coffee and then this Thursday is off and running. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

One more shave! One more shave! One more shave!

In other news, my brush lost its third bristle this month. Before and after pics here.

$BarnyardChallenge musical inspiration comes from the doom world this morning. The world of heavier music really seems to have an affinity for bands names that contain everyone's favorite farm animal- the goat. There's Goatwhore, Goatsnake, Goat Semen, Goat Penis, Goat Smoker and plenty more. This morning, I'm going with King Goat, a short lived British band that put out 2 albums between 2017 and 2018 that were pretty stellar. The lead singer has a ballsy set of pipes on him and the riffs behind him are chewy as all get out. This morning I'll go with "Revenants" from their Conduit album.

Thank F'in Goats it's Friday!! And thankfully there's coffee. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

31 Days of Austerity have come to an end. Some lessons:

    • 16 1/2 years of owning this Merkur 37C and there's no way it's ever leaving the den. Still just a fantastic razor for me.

    • For as soft as this boar brush is, it's awesome. This Omega is far better than my Semogue 1800, as far as soft boars go. This is a great face-lathering brush and I got another amazing lather this morning. Brush day 1 pic and then today's before and after here.

    • Sheep is easily a top 3 base for me. If the scent options were wider, more people would realize how good it is.

    • It's been a real challenge finding songs that I like to meet my own personal $BarnyardChallenge musical quest to celebrate a month of sheep and hogs, but I've had fun running down some musical rabbit holes in the process. So to close out AA24, I leave you with a sheep (well, lamb) song from Genesis and something more current from Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs.

I raise my coffee cup to my fellow AAers! Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.
