Kismet Blade - Losing My Edge

    A #Monthofweckoning

For Austere August, I'm breaking with my pattern of last year and not using Midnight Stag. Instead I'll be using 70th Anniversary this month. Special meaning for me. I love the subtlety and elegance of 70th Anniversary, so I won't exactly suffer.

An area where I may suffer a bit is with the Weck. I'm not really driven to use a replaceable blade straight razor because I enjoy maintaining an edge myself, and I enjoy the different steels and designs of straights that are out there. To ease my lack of excitement, u/whosgotthepudding made these absolutely amazing scales. They make this razor a joy to behold and make it handle a bit less like a Weck.

It will be a long month for me though. I have this in house, and this one is on its way across the pond to me.

So, let's talk about these Days of Weckoning:

    • MRTNG's Ultra Nightmare Mode. Is there any other way?
    • Minimum of 2 passes each day. In last year's AA, I developed a very efficient XTG/WTG, XTG/ATG 2-pass pattern. I'll be using that all month.
    • Palm stropping is for sissies.

To keep it boring for my zero or more reader(s), I'll be inspecting the edge condition of the Kismet blade with my microscope. A link to a photo album is above. Today's photo is of an unused edge, tomorrow's will be the condition after one shave. I plan to update this about every 5 shaves to lessen the day-to-day monotony. I was surprised that people looked at these last year. Clearly, we all need to get a life, but I'm interested to see what kind of wear one of these blades develop.

My shave result was excellent, but I had two tiny weepers; one near the right corner of my lips and one under the chin. I think the one under the chin was an angle mistake. The other might have been a bump. Both of these closed during my cold water rinse.

The SV Beta 4.3 base is light and luxurious. It just occurred to me that this will be my longest run with a vegetal base. The vast majority of my soaps are tallow-based.

I've added microscope photos for the edge condition after one shave and after two shaves. I expect changes on the edge to stabilize shortly. When that happens, I won't update the album daily.

Beautiful shave today. The Kismet blade is so thin yet so stiff you can really keep a low angle and lighten the pressure. I have a light touch, anyway, but today I just let the edge lightly float on the skin and I have a BBS result. I'm going to tinker with this. A DE blade is thinner and should cut with less effort, but I've never had this feeling of lightness and efficiency with a DE blade.

I updated the album again today. I'm starting to see a tiny (and I mean sub-micron) bit of wear at the edge.

Kismet Blade - Losing My Edge

This is my fifth shave ever with a Weck and Kismet blade. As with my experience yesterday, I'm finding that the blade is very efficient and very comfortable if wielded at a low angle and with light pressure through a slick very hydrated lather.

I'm already taking less time for a 2-pass BBS shave than I would with my best straight razor. I see why so many of the YouTube straight shavers just love this thing. Now, I think that some of the translucent green and red scales on the Hair Shaper versions of the Weck look great, but I can't imagine Weck wielding without scales from u/whosgotthepudding. Aside from looking amazing, they allow for a great grip and have enough weight that the handling of the razor does not feel light and twitchy.

I took another microscope image for the album. Overall, today's edge looks very similar to yesterday, but I see a little more softness at the apex. The microscope has a very shallow depth of field. Areas that are small and have some variation in flatness are very difficult to focus on. I think this is symptomatic of an apex that is becoming less uniform but at a fraction of a micron [note, magnification is 944X]. Also of interest is that the PTFE has worn away a little more. I doubt this matters at this point since we cut hair at the apex, but it is interesting to observe and gives me something to write about.

The scent strength on the soap, aftershave, and EdP is mild, but the scent itself is just a beautiful balance of notes. I cannot describe it. Here's what SV says:

The classic citrus notes are accompanied with refreshing aquatic notes, supported by a rich and balanced green aromatic floral and rural heart. All set on a base of precious woods and amber.

I can find the citrus, and aquatic notes if I try, but overall it is a very nice blend.

The Munnin Woodworks handle has a Titanium synthetic knot from AP Shave Co. This knot is described as having good backbone with soft tips. I was concerned about the backbone so I mounted it high and am happy I did. It was too stiff when new but has broken in well in my use of it so far, and I enjoy using it. I'd still prefer a little less backbone but I'm very spoiled with my Wald synthetics.

I have zero issues with the brush handle, though. It has terrific ergonomics in addition to having a beautiful shape.

I planned to go through AA using one of my straight razors (probably the Fili 14), and acquire that cool Headless Horsemen flair. I reluctantly agreed to participate in Days of Weckoning instead; mostly because I haven't really used a replaceable blade straight razor before, and I thought it would be good to try something new.

I expected to be able to get great shaves from the Weck because my technique with a straight is "good enough", but I assumed that it would lack personality and I would spend more of August just enjoying 70th Anniversary. As is often the case, I could not have been more wrong. I'm loving how this razor shaves. I can use a very, very low angle, get very gentle feedback from the edge, and get 2-pass BBS shaves with far less effort than I can with a regular straight razor. Ugh. And I'm only 5 days into this. What will happen to my razor collection on Sept. 1?

I added a microscope image of the blade edge to the album, but did not notice any change from yesterday.

Yeah, I'm not exactly suffering for the cause here in Austere August. I was in a bit of a rush this morning, just followed my normal 2-pass pattern, and did not dawdle. I thought this would not be the closest shave, and that I might have a weeper or two, but I was wrong on both counts. Another very quick BBS shave with no nicks or irritation.

The blade edge condition is about the same as it was yesterday. Today, I chose to take an image of what the worst wear looks like. There are only a couple of places on the edge with wear like that shown in today's edge image.

This setup is not getting old. I'm getting consistent BBS shaves very quickly. Faster, I think, than with a DE or SE razor. I'm not sure why this is, but I have the rest of the month to ponder it.

The SV Beta 4.3 base is really forgiving. I threw way too much hydration into it today and it held up beautifully, though I had lather blurbs everywhere so cleanup took a little longer than usual. The lather is always slick, even with minimal hydration, but I have yet to use it in an undeveloped state.

The blade edge has 8 small areas of wear and the edge, overall, it isn't quite as crisp looking as it was on day one. It's fuzzier and harder to find focus on. I've added an image of wear near the toe. Again, be aware these are tiny (1 micron or less). Too small for us humans to notice. I do think that the edge is rounding, though, and that's why it appears fuzzier. I'm betting that I start to notice less sharpness around day 20 or so.

I've been following u/sgrdddy's slurry lather videos with interest. The slurry lather he makes is very reminiscent of my early one-pass shave lathers many years ago. It also reminds me of the one-pass shaves I used to do with bar soap, though bar soap lather needs to be applied in the area you intend to shave immediately because a full-face bar soap lather dries too quickly.

The point of this comment is to show that someone who is moderately competent at face lathering (me) doesn't necessarily suffer from the problems that sgrdddy suggests exist with face lathering. I think my normal shaving pace is pretty time-efficient, and I generally have more than enough lather for 3 passes.

My discussion is intended as a contrast to slurry lathering which is a method that I think is completely valid. I think the slurry lather method is quicker, but does not provide as much enjoyment of the quality of the soap base (skin food, etc.), nor the scent. Obviously IMHO.

I timed my shave today. My brush loading time was 10 seconds. I loaded directly from the puck with a damp, not wet, brush.

After loading, I put down the brush, and took lather paste (aka protolather) from the puck and built my pre-shave. For this, I smear lather paste on face, add water with my hands and work this mixture into the beard. I add water until this pre-shave mixture is a very wet, very slick emulsion.

With the loaded brush I built a thick lather by splaying the brush and scrubbing the face, and adding water by dipping brush tips into a mug of water. I work at this until the lather is almost to the hydration I want, then I paint in water; again by dipping brush tips not dropping water into the brush. Total time into the shave was a little over 2 minutes after lather for the first pass was complete. (It takes much longer for me to describe this.)

The first pass was completed in after 7 minutes had passed.

I used the same lathering procedure for the second pass, starting with what remained in the brush. No tub loading. The entire 2-pass shave was complete, including aftershave and EdP in 14 minutes and about 30 seconds (rounding down).

Here's the brush. It's a little hard to tell from the pic, but there's easily enough lather for a third pass and perhaps a fourth still available.

I'm not certain if this discussion is worthwhile. Feel free to ignore it.

I added another photo to the blade edge album today.

I don't have a lot to say today. During the first pass I thought I detected a little less sharpness in the blade. I slowed down to get a little more feel but this had the effect of giving me an even closer level of BBS . Today's edge photo indicates that I was just fooling myself. I was tempted not to make an edge photo, but I just had to know.

The most important part of my day, listening to the Lather Games Wrap-up Podcast will have to come later.

Another beautiful shave. This Weck can provide BBS results at impossibly low angles. The width of the spine allows this. I've never used one, but I would think that a frameback straight razor has a blade thickness that is only a little wider than the Kismet blade. So I think one could get edge and bevel geometries that are similar to the Kismet, but the spine width on the Weck might be its real feature.

This is the first day that I'm not providing an update to the edge album. I can't find any significant change from yesterday, so my comments (in the album) from yesterday's image apply to today.

The only thing new that I can offer for today is another SOTD photo attempt.

Today I decided to see what u/sgrdddy's slurry lather could do to provide me with an efficient 2-pass shave. I put my synthetic brush in a mug of water, looked at my phone to get the time then turned the phone to hide the display.

I opened the soap, loaded my slurry, and shaved. I completed my full-face shave including aftershave and EdP 10 minutes later when I looked at the phone again. After this, it took almost 3 minutes to clean up, though, so I need to figure out how to make less of a mess.

Nonetheless, I'm completely happy with this. A 2-pass BBS shave in 10 minutes with no nicks or irritation is totally acceptable with a straight razor. With the Weck, I don't need any cleanup on my neck and I don't need to take chances and be Weckless (u/djundjila) to achieve this this result.

And there are definitely areas for improvement in this process. Perhaps I can cover more facial area between rinses. Maybe I can modify my patterns so I change hands less often. This will be fun to play with.

I spent a lot of time looking at the blade with the microscope today; comparing edge condition with previous photos. I am seeing very slight wear on the edge overall but this is in areas that I haven't imaged before. The heel, center, and toe sections of the blade look very similar to past photos. There are now 10 areas of noticeable degradation, albeit very small. Until today, there were 8. I cannot feel any of this during the shave.

I tried another slurry lather shave. 13 minutes. I loaded too heavily which required adjusting the lather hydration on both passes. Naturally, this made more of a mess which triggered my OCD and diverted my attention from shaving. Then I got carried away with enjoying shave-feel on the first pass. I was actually surprised at the 13 minute time. I expected to find that I had spent 20 minutes on a "quick" shave today.

~~Stockholm~~ Solingen syndrome is starting. I found myself thinking that I should just use 70th Anniversary until it is gone. And I think I'm Wecking my appreciation for my growing straight razor collection. Straight razors. Who needs them? You have to strop them, hone them, keep them from rusting. That's an awful lot of bother.

No SOTD pic. I had an idea for a simple composition, but ran out of energy yesterday. I have added a photo to the edge album, though. This is more of a status photo than one that shows something new. I think the edge feels slightly duller than when new, but the condition is pretty stable.

I went for a luxury shave today. Took a full 20 minutes. Two, thick, super-hydrated lathers, extra time enjoying the brush while lathering, and a slow, light, very low angle razor while shaving. Love the result. Really enjoyed the experience.

Again, no SOTD photo today, and no edge photo either. Two lazy to do the former, and no need for the latter. The edge remains in status quo condition.

    Enjoy your Sunday!

Not much to say. I tried another slurry lather along with my normal 2-pass pattern, but no dawdling. 10 minutes from start to EdP. Very comfortable.

I added another microscope shot to the album. This shows that the edge is pretty much the same. I will say that it is getting more difficult by the day to get a good focus point near the apex. That generally happens when the edge is not uniform. I continue to think that I feel slightly less sharpness when shaving.

I did a timed shave today using my normal lathering method. u/sgrdddy tried this method in the video he posted yesterday.

My shaving time was 15 minutes. This included Thayers, cleanup, aftershave, and EdP spritzing. More importantly, the shave lacked for nothing. I had two perfect (for me) lathers providing the elegant scent of 70th Anniversary and the light, slippery face-feel of the Beta 4.3 vegetal base. Lather that accumulated on the razor would easily slide down the razor and fall off cleanly, and it would rinse cleanly with no effort. I had enough lather in the brush for a third pass, and I only had a little lather falling off the brush while building it for the first pass. This is ideal for me; the full richness of lather for all passes of the shave without too much time spent to build it, or much lather wasted.

I often get carried away while shaving and take longer than I did today. Because I was aware I was timing, I did not rush, but I kept my focus on each part of the process. I allot 30 minutes for shaving normally, and always expect to be done around 20 minutes. This time includes straight razor cleaning and stropping. (I strop after shaving.)

I included a microscope photo of an area near the heel in the album today. I haven't shown this area of the edge for a while. Excellent blade condition continues. The other day u/_walden_ asked how large a beard hair would be in these photos of mine. Apparently beard hair can vary from 17 to 180 microns. Gillette says that beard hair averages 100 microns. In my photos, at the bottom left, you'll see a scale that shows the distance of 50 microns on vertical and horizontal axes. As you can see, a beard hair is quite large at the magnification I'm using.

I did some timing today. This is primarily to give u/sgrdddy some data about my lathering. Today's lathers were just like yesterday. Perfect (for me). Very rich, fragrant, wet, and slick. The blade felt light and feathery while cutting whiskers. Anyway, here's the timing along with some comments:

    • Brush loading - 12 sec - damp brush, slightly splayed
    • Preshave - 40 sec - protolather spread on face and worked into beard with lots of water to dilute it into a very slick emulsion
    • First lather - 90 sec - paint lather, dip tips, splay brush and agitate to build volume. Add water and build in this manner until lather is full and fully hydrated
    • First pass - 230 sec - 3:50
    • Second lather - 85 sec - same method as first
    • Second pass - 250 sec - 4:10

    Total - 707 sec or 11:47

These timings represent a full-enjoyment shave for me. I'm not rushing. Just being mindful of the experience. The reason for not overloading the brush relates to wanting a full lather but not wanting to spend more time than needed to get one. Also, I want to limit the time I need to cleanup after shaving. With today's shave, like most of mine, there was no excess lather strewn about the sink or countertop. Cleanup is just rinse the soap, dry the razor, swipe the counter with a towel.

No need for a microscope photo today. Status quo on the edge.

I'm posting this in the early afternoon, but I had a very packed schedule this morning. Because of this, I thought a u/sgrdddy slurry shave was in order. Normally, my 2-pass shaving pattern includes chasing BBS by varying the direction of razor travel in areas that are difficult; primarily the neck, chin and beneath the corners of my mouth. For a change, I wondered how much my shaving time would improve if I used a slurry lather and just did not chase BBS in those areas.

I put the phone in stopwatch mode, opened the soap, got the brush wet under the tap, then pressed the Start button. I pressed the Stop button at 6:29 after putting the top back on the EdP.

No nicks or irritation and, as expected, the shave is not BBS in the areas that I mentioned. I am a bit surprised at how good it is overall. I thought I'd be rating it as Average (which equates to DFS), but it is really better than that, hence the Good rating.

I noted that u/djundjila did a 2-pass slurry lather today, timed it, and made a video (show-off!). It took him 5 minutes and within that time he's showing soap, splash and aftershave to the camera. Like u/djundjila, I did not rush and you might wonder why we emphasize this. Pick up a Weck with a blade in it and contemplate your results if you rush moving it around your mouth, ears, Adam's apple, and so on. Hopefully, you get the point.

No microscope pic today. I did inspect the edge. It just soldiers on ...

I used my normal lathering method today but I tried a new, cross-handed pattern for my first pass. Of course it felt awkward, and I'm not certain of any benefits, but it is something to tinker with.

I was in the mood for a 3-pass shave today and obtained a super silky BBS result. I do think that I'm feeling less sharpness in the blade. I added an image of the edge near the toe. You can see a tiny bit of edge wear but the photo won't show any rounding of the apex. I think it is rounded, though, because it is very difficult to get focus there.

I wondered if my issues with focus might be due to a dirty lens in the microscope. Yesterday I took it apart and cleaned it. After cleaning, the lens surface appeared shinier but I don't see any improvement in photo quality.

Today I went for a luxury lather. I loaded longer than I normally, do and spent more time building for each pass. With a soap as good as SV, you really need to do this. It allows you to experience the full quality that this soap offers. I used Midnight Stag last August and thoroughly enjoyed it (well, I don't like making frag spray videos). SV, however, is on a whole other level. [Obviously, MOIMO]

No need for a microscope photo today.

I really focused on technique in today's shave. I wondered if a blade with 20 shaves on it could give me the level of comfort and closeness that it did on day one; allowing that I am much more familiar with this setup than I was on day one. Anyway, I have a BBS shave with no fixups needed in my trouble areas.

For technique, I am paying attention to what the unique dimensions of this razor can do. In particular, because of its shape, I can get it into areas that won't fit a wider razor. And this razor cuts a very low angles. It cuts better and much more comfortably this way.

I added an image to the edge album today. This is more about recording the condition than showing anything new. The edge is still in great shape.

I haven't talked about the brush much this month other than to note how comfortable and ergonomic the handle is. The AP Shave Co Titanium knot is the only synthetic I have that has changed over time. Luckily it has changed for the better. When it was new, it just had too much backbone for me. I did some bowl lathering with it where I emphasized spaying the knot and that helped a little. Using it everyday this month, though, has done the trick. The backbone, now, is just right to allow easy loading of soap and the knot splays more easily which highlights the softness of the tips.

    Enjoy your Sunday!

Can I get 31 shaves out of this blade? Yes. Easily. Though I do feel that the edge is dulling slightly, I'm not close to the point where I would toss the blade. I have not palm-stropped it, nor do I intend to.

The 70th Anniversary fragrance continues to be enjoyable when used daily. I am not tiring of it. There is more depth to it in the EdP, but that is to be expected.

At the end of this month, I'll have 34 shaves on the puck. This would be a good year to use 70th Anniversary 70 times.

The edge on this blade is definitely duller, but it does not show up under the microscope. I will add an image to the edge album in the next couple of days, but I think that edge durability on these Kismet blades is very high.

Today I spent time tinkering with my 2-pass pattern. The pattern is a mix of directions; WTG-XTG and ATG-XTG as you might expect. Some of how I accomplish this is to use overlapping strokes but to change the direction of blade travel as I overlap. Because I can't help myself, and chase BBS, I tend to stay in an area longer than I probably should. I'm playing around with reducing the number of strokes while maintaining the level of closeness. Interesting stuff for a shaving nerd.

I continue to tinker with my pass patterns and the blade is getting duller. I could compensate for dullness with more shaving strokes, but I'm trying to maintain efficiency with fewer shaving strokes. I don't expect the BBS level that I've had so far unless I chase it more, but the edge feels very comfortable.

I added a record-keeping microscope photo today. As I've been saying, the edge appearance seems to have reached a stable condition. The only indication I have of rounding is that the edge apex continues to be more difficult to get in focus. This is because as it rounds some of it falls outside the microscope's depth of field which is extremely shallow at this magnification.

Phenomenal shave today. The edge on this blade has dulled enough that I don't get BBS everywhere on a 2-pass shave without chasing it in those areas that are difficult to get to. But this is not a problem for a 3-pass shave, and that dullness ensures that I'm not getting a shave so close that tomorrow morning's shave is compromised.

I used my normal lathering method today; the one tried by u/sgrdddy on one of his videos. My goal is to get 3 rich lathers from a single load with those lathers built on the face and not in the brush. I absolutely nailed it today with lather that would barely stay on the razor and would fall off if I gave gravity a chance. My lather consistency on each pass was the same and I certainly had enough lather in the brush to build a good fourth pass. The SV Beta 4.3 base has a wonderful feel when built this way. It is every bit as luxurious as the price tag would imply.

Oh. I added a link to my album of photos for this month if you're interested.

Enjoy your weekend! Hope your weather is nicer than mine. 31°C. 80% humidity.

I'm saying goodbye to Austere August from the road with another Slurry Lather™. Again, I've started with a wet brush but slightly less water than I've used before. The idea is to get all the slurry with less water strewn about to clean up. I don't recall if u/sgrdddy has played with this aspect or not.

Anyway, this has been another fun Austere August. I will be carrying SV 70th into September. I'll explain about that in tomorrow's comment.

Congrats to the Weckonistas who started with no Weck experience and made it through!
