Day 1/31 of Looking for Serenity in Austerity

    • Brush: Semogue Owner's Club (cherry wood and boar) (1)
    • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels Friodur 50 (7/8", hollow ground, stainless steel, masonic deco) (1)
    • Lather: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Roman Spice
    • Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Roman Spice

This is my fourth AA and the first one I'm not doing in Mr One More Time's Ultra Nightmare Mode. I like the nightmare mode for trying out new hardware with disposable blades, because it lets you concentrate on technique and let's be frank, 31 shaves on a blade isn't a big deal. It's perfect for something like GEMs of Wisdom or the Days of Weckoning, but I am less of a fan when it comes to straight razor challenges, in particular if the goal is to make it easy for new straight shavers to join. It's not because I think it is particularly difficult to do 31 shaves on an edge, but because meistering straight razor maintenance is as much a source of satisfaction as perfecting the shave technique. This was my idea behind creating HoneMeisterschaft, the AA challenge that requires you to hone your edge and to discuss your process and its effect. Since this is a niche (straight razor honing) within a niche (straight razor shaving) within a ..., I wasn't sure this would attract any participants, but I'm delighted to see that a bunch (6 at the time of this shave!) of you decided to join the fray, thanks! 😊.

I decided on my beautiful and mysterious Friodur 50 for $FriodomRiders. Ever since I bought a Friodur 472½ two years ago (for The List) I was curious about why stainless razors have a bad reputation. They can clearly be fantastic, and not having to worry about every last bit of moisture with a straight is pure peace of mind, so it never made sense to me. I've shared my theory in the announcement post and I'm confident that everyone who took this ~~opportunity~~ excuse to use a quality stainless steel razor will be appreciate the shaves, and the confidence that the blade won't rust.

Ironically this shave sucked 😄. What happened is that I had planned to hone it before leaving for vacation 2 weeks ago, but 4 days before the travel, we had a (in hindsight minor) health emergency which meant that I had to rush Djunior to the hospital and take care of him instead of important things like honing this razor or going to work. So instead of just packing my razor, my RawHoggin' brush and my software, my AA setup now also included my stones, and I didn't want to schlepp all that stuff. Instead, I sent it ahead to the place I knew we'd be at on Aug 1. The plan almost worked, but our flight got delayed and we arrived super late. I honed the thing, but clearly didn't take enough time because it was quite the tuggy affair. Luckily the rules of HoneMeisterschaft allow for (and even encourage) corrective measures in this situation. I'm off to bed, and I'll hone this thing better tomorrow.

The SOC gets such contradictory ratings in this community that it intrigued me. From "favourite brush" to "forced bloom makes it feel empty" it spans the entire range, so I'm really curious to experience this new-to me brand of piggy.

Tagging Hog Daddy u/EldrormR as per rule #6 of Rawhoggin. The SOTD pic includes the (still packed) brush, and here's the unboxing video.

Oops, didn't have time to hone tonight, so another tuggy shave for me. That's the price of being ill prepared for an AA challenge during a family vacation, I guess 😅.

The SOC still has a lot of backbone, and just eats lather up. But the tips are soft, so I see no major obstacle to a smooth bit of RawHogginy, and I have all the soap and patience required to break this pretty brush in.

    Sigh. Of. Relief.

I found the time today to hone my razor, and now it's smoooooth! ☺️ No more tuggy shaves for this face this month.

About my process: I'm using a Naniwa combination waterstone with a 3k side and a 10k side. This time, I killed the edge and then honed it on the 3k side, frequently checking the edge on a strip of styrofoam until it pushcut easily without much resistance along the entire edge. Next, I switched to 10k and repeated the procedure. After a while, the pushcuts become effortless. First only on some parts of the edge, which then tells me where to apply light pressure with my fingers until I have effortless pushcuts along the length of the edge. I'm using both trailing and leading edge strokes, but only apply pressure during the trailing edge bit. I have a pasted canvas strop which I use exclusively after honing, and a few laps on it make the edge feeling smoother during the first shave in my experience, but also seemingly sharper: the pushcuts in styrofoam are like the blade melts into it. I'm thinking this is the edge being deburred and possibly the bevel convexed by the pasted strop, but I can't know for sure.

This is pretty much also the process I'd use at home, the only difference is that I have a big bag of styrofoam packing peanuts for edge testing (the u/gcgallant method) at home and my muscle memory works better with those than the strips of styrofoam I managed to scrounge up in my vacation location.

The brush is starting to resist splaying less, which makes it easier to lather. It's still hogging the lather and the tips haven't started to split yet, so there's still some work to be done.

Late evening shave after a day visiting different playgrounds with Djunior. I think I'm missing some of the beauty of Roman Spice with these evening shaves before bed, but it's also difficult to motivate myself to wake up early for them. Luxury problems.

The brush is coming along, but it's still in a state where it's difficult to imagine that I'll like it as much as my Zeniths. We shall see.

Morning shave! Last day of vacation, and I finally managed to switch back to shaving in the morning. For vacation djundjila, this feels like a big accomplishment. I'll miss vacation djundjila tomorrow.

I've reached the uneventful part of AA. The razor still has a great edge, the brush makes ok lather and doesn't change a lot anymore between shaves, Roman Spice still smells summery and fresh, and I'm enjoying the routine.

If not for the required daily pic for Raw Hoggin', I wouldn't even move my gear (with the exception of the straight, which I keep out of Djunior's reach.

Now off to the neighborhood pool for dinner fun with Djunior.

I'm solidly back on the morning shave routine train and that feels good. I was almost expecting that, after yesterday's ultra-smooth Friodur 17 Second Luxury Shave™, this 50 would feel rough by comparison, but this edge and razor still feel smooth and pleasant. It just feels lighter, less deliberate, less substantial.

Nose blindness is setting in and the scent of Roman Spice starts to escape me while lathering and shaving. I still get the splash and the frag, so that's good, but I'm getting tempted to go more than my usual 2 spritzes, which is probably not the best idea for a day at the office.

Oh, and the brush is winning me over.

It's honing weekend in the HoneMeisterschaft! I.e., the first time since August started participants actually should do something 😅

    My setup

I have a fairly minimalist honing setup. For instance, despite being tempted on multiple occasions, I have not yet dived into the natural stone finishers. I have a Naniwa 3k/10k Super Stone combination stone, a lapping plate to keep it flat, and a big bag full of styrofoam packing peanuts (actual styro, not the starch-based bio-degradable ones). I also have a Jeweller's loupe, but I'm not using it anymore. That's it.

The 3k side is maybe a bit fine for setting bevels, but with a bit of patience, I've also managed that in the past (even on chonky vintage wedges with wide bevels).

    My Process

Is partially copied from "Simple Straight Razor Honing" on Science of Sharp, but instead of counting strokes, I rely on how the razor feels on the hone and, most importantly, the u/gcgallant packing peanut test (here shown on a styrofoam deco ball, but packing peanuts are cheaper and work just as well).

Starting out honing razors, the most difficult part for me was to figure out what works and what doesn't. I'd frequently spend an hour or more honing a razor without palpable progress. I tried to visualise progress using loupes, a microscope lens, etc. Every once in a while, I'd get that glorious edge through trial and error, but the lack of reproducibility was frustrating. At some point, u/gcgallant shared with me how he uses packing peanuts to test the progress he makes during honing, and it's been the missing link to get reproducible sharp edges. Styrofoam has thin membranes around porous beads or puffs. It's a bit like a tomato in that a sharp knife slices through the skin effortlessly and allows you to make clean cuts, while a blunt knife struggles to cut the skin and crushes the meat underneath. Packing peanuts are like that and make the difference between more and less sharp parts of the edge obvious. Except, the peanuts all feel exactly the same.

Even though a few laps on the finisher would have been just fine for refreshing today, I decided to do the whole process (see the version on the lemmy for pictures)

I soaked the water stone for a bit over ten minutes. It hasn't been lapped in a while and looks correspondingly dirty in the water bath.

There were a few dished areas of the stone,

and lapping both sides flat took a while.

With a freshly flattened and soaked stone, I started off by thoroughly killing the edge,

An then rebuilt it with trailing edge strokes on the 3k side, frequently interrupting to check my progress on packing peanuts. At first, progress is very fast and some areas of the edge become noticeably sharper than others. This shows where to apply more pressure and when the edge felt uniformly sharp, I moved over to the finisher side. Same process again, trailing edge strokes and peanut tests until it's uniformly sharp enough to just melt into the styrofoam.

To finish, I stropped on chromium oxide-loaded canvas for a few laps to get any potential burrs of and smooth out any potential rough bits (I only use loaded canvas right after honing, and only clean canvas and leather after that) and test again on the peanut. (The reason for that last test is that some razors I've honed for the first time got really sharp on the peanut test, but after stropping would feel horrible. The edges would just crumble during the first shave. This can be remedied by killing the edge and start over from a coarse stone to cut away the weak surface steel).

    My Shave

Now I'm not sure how it went for everyone else, but my blade did not really need a refresh of its edge yet, so I wasn't sure what to expect from the refresh. Unsurprisingly, there wasn't a huge difference. The fool's pass did feel noticeably smoother, and that's always nice.

Great shave today, and I'm looking forward to reading all the honing posts today. Have a great Sunday!

The edge has hit its stride and – at peak smoothness now – is a joy to use. I like hollow grounds for their gentle touch, and I like heavy blades for their smoothness ATG. When a comparatively light blade like this one gives you a smooth fool's pass, you know the edge is on point.

I saw and photographed split tips in the brush a few days ago, but I can't find them anymore, and the brush seems in no hurry to start a mass splitting event. I'm starting to feel impatient.

Break-in progress has seemingly stalled for the brush. I don't feel any day-to-day changes anymore, but the tips haven't split yet, so I'm getting curious about when this might start, as I expect a significant change in how the brush feels at that point. I might have to continue this break in through Straightember.

    Very nice early morning shave.

So, just yesterday, I was loudly (and impatiently) wondering whether the tips of this brush would ever start splitting, only to wake up to a mass splitting event this morning. Now we're cooking.

Last Sunday of AA, and I'm loving the HoneMeisterschaft format where I'm still shaving with a fresh edge. Truly concentrating on a setup without added hoops to jump through designed to make the experience challenging.

I hope everyone is starting a great last week of AA today!

Super early morning shave today. I was obviously a bit too tired because I nicked my strop. Well, better that than the face. 😅

Nice shave, but that was to be expected at this point in AA.

My office moved to another city during my summer break, and my commute went from three minutes to one hour each way 🤮. This means that my morning shaves have now become very (too?) early morning shaves. I'll have to get used to going to bed earlier to start enjoying them again.

Last day of Austerity, starting tomorrow, the entire shave den is fair game once again ♥

Another Austere August in the can. This was my fourth and it flew by, and I'm looking forward to looking at how the challenges I participated in panned out.
