For the games I figure since commercials seem to be a thing of past with streaming (does anyone have cable anymore?), I’d share some on theme commercials that I grew up with. As I was looking through the calendar some days may be difficult ie vetiver. I may need some assistance :). Let’s start it off right!

Bonjour- a typical American greeting

For todays shave I am using Red House Farm. Many a shave this month will be thanks to u/kind_simian due to his massive sample PIF I received a few weeks ago. I don’t have any info on Lumos. It’s very green, like a pistachio/ mint ice cream color. Scent is kinda Irish spring sport-ish. Before this PIF I had never heard of Red House Farm. This stuff is soft, perhaps softer than Macduffs. Scent was meh. Whipped up a great lather and easy glide

Hate to say it but I have never been a fan of either Bay Rum or Old Spice. It is what it is.

For todays installment of yesteryears TV commercials we get to experience the not so subtle innuendos ubiquitous of early 2000s, particularly the many great alcohol bits.

A quick glance at todays Thread proves u/priusaurus previous LG posts were epic which I would love to read but ain’t nobody got time for that (looking at other ROTY posts this year it’s also apparent that I ain’t got time for that). I was able to quickly pursue his recent posts and gleaned that u/priusaurus is a generous contributor to the daily questions thread and is a huge fan of Stirling’s sheep base, which I presume will be featured heavily for tomorrow’s shave. For this I am certain u/priusaurus has a little captain in him ;).

LG2024 SOTD- June 3rd “ Beef, it’s not what’s for shaving”

Darkside 1 (HAGS released this last year and released a second Darkside scent that is completely different) is one of my favorite soaps I own due to performance, scent, and artwork. I mean it’s just awesome.

Challenge: Do I have an alum block? Yes. Do I ever use it? No. But it’s lather games. Ok I guess I will. Does it add or enhance my shave in any way? Not really.

Today’s installment, could obviously be this. As I am assuming this is where the name for today’s theme actually came from. Thing is I don’t actually ever remember seeing this commercial.

I do however, remember fondly this series of commercials which feature the work of composer Aaron Copland.

I somewhat attribute watching them for my lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of classical music, particularly American classical music. Copland has composed many pieces whether you know it or not you have certainly listened to. Such as this. The featured piece comes from the fifth of his 5-part Rodeo ballet entitled “Hoe-down” and is quintessentially American, with its combination of lively strings and rampant use of percussion ie the woodblock it’s one of his most well-known pieces.

LG2024- June 4 “Kiss of lime and Kisses”

Shave: I’m typically not much for fruity notes. I like the darker stuff. Lime is the exception and Stirling does it right. As a dad of 4 daughters Eroe and Rawr were a few of my first purchases after getting into the hobby a few years ago. I loved Rawr but something in it didn’t agree with me. Eroe is somewhat similar sharing a generally bright citrus and a few notes of musk and cedarwood. Paired very well with the lime.

Challenge: I haven’t had the pleasure of trying many bases that have been DCed. Since I enjoy Barrister and Mann so much, I have acquired a few scents that feature the Excelsior base which is top notch.

For me it’s toss up for best base between Omnibus and the current Macduffs base. Omnibus is so easy to dial in and work with. Whenever I use it i question why I need anything else. Macduffs starts out very soft and almost sticky but once it’s hydrated enough it is simply perfect. No other soap leaves my face in better shape than Macduffs. BM scents for me are unmatched so I will give them the title.

Today’s viewing: the only thing better than chocolate is chocolate during Christmas and The jingling kisses is an all timer. It airs every year and has been since 1989.

LG2024- June 5th “ The worst a man can get”

Shave: Barbasol was the only stuff my dad ever used, or at least the only stuff I ever saw in my parents bathroom. I picked up the cheapest option in the travel section of my local grocery. Clean enough smell, lather was thick but extremely dry. No cushion at all. Served as a Reminder why all of us are here. Got a pretty close shave regardless.

Challenge: the canned stuff I simply applied with my hand, no brush used.

Viewing: could it get anymore 90s than this

LG2024- June 6th “ Thirsty Thursday”

Shave: Booze and Alcohol. I am not much of a drinker but today I imbibed. There was even beer in the base. Both scents are bright and punchy. No better way to start the day, though I may have a hangover by lunch.

Challenge: I’m up way too early this morning to video anything. My favorite shaving channels have been IAMCBD, Ruds, Kevyshaves, and Latherhog. All give stellar reviews and have introduced me to a few scents I’d otherwise probably skip.

Shave: Thanks to u/solongamerica for the MDC smush. This is my first experience with Martin De Candre. I have had my eye on one their infamous tubs for awhile but haven’t pulled the trigger. I was pleasantly surprised. The bowl lather initially started out very bubbly but after the slow addition of water this stuff turn into one of the best lathers I have had in a while and the resulting shave was great. Vetiver is not a note that my nose initially enjoys, it is too dry and grassy. After this was lathered I actually quite enjoyed the scent.

Challenge: ATG all the way…except for my neck which I simply cannot shave anything but WTG or I can’t shave for a few days from the irritation.

Viewing: Vetiver is a type of grass. The smell of grass always reminds me of my first job doing landscaping and mowing/trimming grass for a few neighbors. I would often have to head to Home Depot for new trimmer line or for various other tools of the trade. The Home depots ads for the past decade have all featured the same voice, actor Josh Lucas from Sweet Home Alabama and Glory Road. Nowadays i recognize him more for his voice than anything else.

Shave: Thanks to u/onionmiasma for the smush. Pretty muted scent. Easy lather. No issues. Smelling great with MOTI.

Challenge: Last April before we moved from Ohio I had the week off from work and decided that a trip to Maggards was in order. I took my 2 older girls and we drove from Cincinnati to Adrian. We woke up early and made it around 10am. My girls got bored pretty quick but found an easy friend in their kitty and were occupied while I made the rounds. I made away with a Timeless bowl, DG MOTI set, Stirling executive man splash and Ariana and Evans Monte Carlo soap. Given the day trip plus the shopping that’s the most I’ve spent on shaving supplies. We then enjoyed some burgers at the local Culver’s. All around great trip and glad we could make it before we moved. Currently in Texas and moving to Reno/Tahoe so likely won’t be making it back anytime soon unfortunately.

Shave: There haven’t been many Barbershop scents I don’t enjoy despite being a hotly contested scent profile. The Master is one I’m trying for the first time today. Very spicy and dark for a barbershop scent. My 2 favorites in this category are Barrbarr and Hygge but this one could give those a run. Followed it up with Barbershop de los Muertos 2.

Challenge: 13/32. The randoms were ridiculously hard.

Viewing: Nike Puppets were legendary. I absolutely loved these.

Shave: except for the 2024 releases I have smelled every HOM soap. Some, like Rumble or Tobacconist, aren’t initially pleasant and need to be lathered for more of the notes to be appreciated. Smash for me was a hit the second i first took a whiff. Tusk base and Will’s scent… I love this stuff. Followed it up with Valle Crucis which was my favorite 2023 release. All around great shave.

LG2024- June 11th “Chicks dig it”

Shave: April is the best month of the year. Firstly it’s mine and my oldest daughters birthday month. Secondly, depending on where you live it’s is generally the month that the cold and long and dreary winter starts to depart or if it’s a warmer climate, like a few places I have lived, its the last tolerable month before the heat waves begin. Lastly, and most importantly, it’s when baseball begins. There is no better sport that exists.

Early on in my wetshaving journey I happened upon some Diamond splash. Baseball scented aftershave? Yes please. Shortly after, I was able to find a used set on the Bazaar. I then found out that this perfect scent will no longer be made and now have 3 sets ( if you have any that you would like to part with, please let me know.) It is the only scent that I own multiples. I could settle for the other baseball themed scent in Noble Otters Batters Up…but that shit was terrible. Seriously??? green pepper ??WTAF???

Because of the green theme I was not able to include my favorite brush. Last year I broke one of my birch baseball bats during an adult league game. I didn’t just wanna trash it and figured, “hey why not make a shaving brush out of it?” I contacted Levi from Prometheus Handcrafts via Instagram and asked if he could repurpose my bat into a brush. He gladly obliged and made this custom beauty. It has a darker area around it that was lightly torched to darken the wood and meant to simulate pine tar that is used to enhance the grip while swinging a bat.

Viewing: I was in little league in the late 90s and all the baseball heroes of the time were bigger than life sluggers like McGwire and Sosa and Bonds. We now know why they were bigger than life :). I also grew up in a city without and MLB team and the only baseball I could watch were the nationally televised Braves on TBS and Cubs on WGN. The Braves were the easy choice. Instead of the sluggers like Fred McGriff or Chipper Jones, my favorite Braves were Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz. Absolute aces! Behold my favorite commercial of all time

Shave: Ahh proraso green. Prior to finding this sub and purchasing some Barrister and Mann soap in late 2022 this was the only stuff I used to shave with, for a decade. I will probably never NOT have some in my den. Same goes for the green splash, just a classic scent.

Challenge: One shelf. This is what my wife gave me. One shelf! I think that’s adequate. We are moving more to a minimalist type of lifestyle which certainly has its merits. We have purged a lot of in there past couple of years but it seems my den has only grown in that time hahaha. I feel this hobby lends itself towards the opposite of minimalism and it’s certainly a struggle to balance. We are also in the process of moving so my den isn’t at all organized in its full glory.

Some takeaways

• I highly value software over hardware. I only have one razor. Will this change? Likely. I would like to add an adjustable, a titanium, and something bronze in the near future. The Razorock Gamechanger serves all my needs for now.
• I like samples.
• All 7 of my brushes are synthetics. I may dabble into the high end badgers but for now synthetics serve me just fine.
• Taking a survey and an accounting of what you own is an interesting exercise in self reflection. I currently have 58 soap samples, 33 soaps, 25 splashes, 7 brushes, 1 razor.

Do I really need all this stuff? probably not but that’s why we are all here.

Shave: There is nothing more nostalgic for me than Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I think I was a different one for Halloween for 4 yrs straight. Michaelango was my favorite. April was definitely a babe. There have been many iterations over the years, mostly bad, but the most recent movie I think had the right amount of new and old school vibes and was done really well. First Lines offering is a dupe of Acqua Di Gio Absolu and is pretty spot on to my nose. I prefer the original which is what my EDT is a dupe of, more citrus and lime forward than Absolu. Either way, Shaving with this stuff always makes me giddy and excited for the day simply because of the artwork.

Shave: SBS rope is up there as one of my new favorite scents. From their site it lists “With Rope Swing, we are headed to a pristine mountain lake. The scent notes on this one are dandelion, water, moss, galbanum, juniper, ozone, patchouli, and cedar. The scent opens with a rush of green before settling down into a beautiful mix of dandelion and woodsy elements. The aquatic notes are not featured here but instead play a supporting role. Rope Swing will also feature the synthetic cooling ingredient WS-23.“ just a wonderful experience. Paired with Stirlings Menthol Mountain man I really loved my stacked shave.

Besides a large birthday Murphy and McNeil purchase this year has been more about consumption of soaps vs accumulation, that was last year. In the past 8 months or so I have killed 5 soaps.

Shave: First time using Cella. I can see why it’s been around so long. Beautiful light almond scent and whipped up a great lather. Very easy to work with. Recently bought some Stetson at my local Walmart. Not sure if it came out the same time as the fragrance but to my knowledge they both smell exactly the same so I’m going with it. I like it, a lot. Lightly sweet, powdery. Doesn’t really give a cowboy vibe to me but definitely masculine. 

Challenge: For not being that hairy anywhere else... My legs are hairy AF. I have shaved them before but have required the use of hair clippers :(. Not happening with a razor today.

Happy Fathers day! As we are moving back to the west US, I am looking forward to finally making it to a Dodgers game with my dad. We have a shared passion for the game and seemingly every time we talk, baseball becomes part of the conversation. He was my long-time coach and has transitioned to my biggest ally and fan in all my professional endeavors.

Shave: About 2 months ago I got the sampler pack of the full Southern Witchraft lineup. I was blown away. They have some of the most unique offerings of any artisan with a vegan base. Their bases performs just as well as any tallow base. The only scent I didn’t like or love was Necromantic, I get too much wine and I have never been a wine drinker. I liked Druantia the best and purchased the trick. I packed up most of my stuff this weekend so I’m trying to kill some Splashes.

Challenge: not quite sure what the challenge is about today? I view Reddit subs in a similar way as religion… all have their own rules and regulations and attract different followers, doesn’t make one superior over another. TBH I find this sub more….dogmatic than WE. Sometimes I prefer the structure and consistency of this sub while other times I like the laissez-faire nature of WE. It can get weird here (see Lather games) and there you have to wade through a lot BS to get to some gems

“Finding the way when traveling.  When I was younger, we would go backpacking in the Colorado Rockies!  We would explore every National Park that we could, and pick a new place every year. There is something about the mountains, rivers, and lakes that just bring a calmness to the hectic world!   A Cairn can be used for navigation when you stack rocks (see them in the label) in a way where it's largest rock on the bottom, then smaller ones on top.  This is to show your path so others can follow, and you can find your way back. I would use them when we reached the lakes and rivers that we went fishing at.  To mark the occasion and say to the wilderness that I was there! Pasteur's reached out and wanted to collaborate and make something special.  With this release we went for an aquatic that brings peace to the mind, and calmness to your shave!.  Scent notes:  Bergamot, Lemon, Jasmine, Pineapple, Cedar, Ozone, Sandalwood.  it's a clean, grassy aquatic!”

Challenge: As stated above a Cairn is a human-made pile (or stack) of stones raised for a purpose, usually as a marker or as a burial mound.

In the spirit of the challenge I found my nearest stone and shaved atop it. I did not kill or bury anything but I am trying my darnest to kill this splash. It has been overcast the past few days here which has been a thankful respite from the relenting Texas summer heat.

I could have used the water from the pictured “pond” but pretty sure it’s sewer water and filled with turtle shit, so I just brought a spray bottle.

Shave: Autumn ash is the quintessential fall scent for me. It’s the type of scent that transports you to a place like few other. I absolutely love it.

Shave: First go around with this scent and Wholly Kaw base. Siero base performed very well. I’m a sucker for tobacco scents and this is one of the better ones I have ever smelled.

I simply wouldn’t have been able to do the games without a very generous PIF from u/kind_simian last month. Soooo many great samples. And has broadened my horizons for spending even more money. Thank you!!!

Challenge: My vote will always be Stirling. I think I find others that are better and then I use one the many soaps I have from them and wonder why I buy anything else.

Shave: Smoking bishop is the best Christmas scent I have tried. It’s warm and cozy like Clark wrapped up in all the old clothes in the attic watching old family reels. For the splash this is our last full day in Texas. Had to go with Lonestar and pulled out the hat for the shave.

Challenge: lather bowl fit perfectly in my cowboy hat

Shave: Last shave before we move. Chose this because I shaved with it then I could throw it away after. Honestly it wasn’t terrible. Sickly manufactured meant-to-be-manly-but-not scent. Finally killed the splash and just in time.

The next 5 days while traveling are gonna get interesting but I have all my soaps neatly packed in my dopp Kitt(it’s a lot fuller than usual).

Challenge: I only use synthetics. Rinse completely, shake, dry off excess water and let dry.

But this scent still isn't done. A base of sandalwood, Haitian vetiver, amber, patchouli, musk, and vanilla provide a pleasing, powdery finish.”

Challenge: time to build some neural connections. Had to be much more present this morning given the left handed shave. I was half way through the first pass when I remembered to do it. The shave was obviously slower but more deliberate. Results were just as good as normal.

I’ve been wetshaving for 13 yrs.

For 11 of those years I actually did see significant cost savings because my setup was: - one razor
- one brush
- Proraso green cream
- And I bought a massive blade sampler that literally lasted me 10 yrs.

Then in late 2022 I shaved off my beard and wanted to up my game so bought some Barrister and Mann Soap and a new synthetic brush for myself for Christmas… and here were are. Sharing my daily shaves with like minded internet strangers:).

Challenge: Cheap lather, proraso is currently $10 on Amazon, check. I bought the Stetson splash for maybe 6 bucks at Walmart, check. I only own one razor so check. of the brushes that are not currently boxed away traveling across the country the Elite razor is the cheaper of the 2, check.

Challenge: Gonna be honest, This month just posting a SOTD is about all I can do with a New job and cross country move. I made my calendar as best I could given the circumstances.
