    Jul. 1, 2023 - It’s Go Time!

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Dreadnought Avenger #SMOLL #RUNT

    • Razor: Supply The Single Edge SE

    • Blade: Supply Injector

    • Lather: Captain’s Choice - Venture

    • Post Shave: Captain’s Choice - Venture Aftershave

    • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co - Executive Man EdT

As we start our “Venture” into this month of the Lather Games is there any better way than going all out on new things? Well I for one could’ve picked a better choice for my brush. Got this Dreadnought brush purely for shiggles since I paid all of $3.75 for it. Well I think I might have overpaid for it…to start out with it was advertised as being 40mm diameter by 50mm loft. Despite the handle being advertised as 30mm (yes that math DEFINITELY checks out!) When it arrived it really showed its true colors as barely being 19mm x 45mm! Don’t worrry though because its “The Ultimate Shaving Brush for ReAl MeN!” Good thing I’m not a fake man otherwise this would be a huge disappointment! Let’s not talk about its performance, ok?

I’ve actually had a sample of Captain’s Choice soap since Christmas because it came free with the scuttle my wife got me but somehow I never got around to using it. I love how they definitely dance around the fact that its an Aventus dupe on their website! Oh well, I still am happy with my scuttle from them for when I bowl lather. They support great things and it’s a pretty nice scuttle.

First time using an injector razor today and I didn’t have a great go at it. Obviously the first time you pick up a razor it isn’t going to click immediately but I wasn’t impressed. I’m glad I’m borrowing this razor and didn’t pay money for it, at least initially. I am borrowing this from my Father-in-law who I got into wetshaving. He only shaves his neck and this seems to work out well for him! He hasn’t fallen into the rabbit hole that this hobby is, he has all of three soaps and goes back and forth between this razor, a 34c and his carts. This will go back to him next week when we visit.

#PhotoContest See my photo linked in the date header, it speaks for itself today! #AirBud #ICanDoThisAllMonthLongRight?

To the judges and people who made this happen: thank you so much! Been looking forward to this for the past ~~11~~ 12 months and I am so excited for this again! It is my third time participating and super excited to see what the month holds! I was looking back at the Highlight thread from last year and LETS GO!!

Jul. 2, 2023 -To Moo or not to Moo, that is the question

    • Prep: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Stirling Soap Co. 2 Band Synthetic

    • Razor: GEM MMOC #BRASSING

    • Blade: GEM PTFE

    • Lather: Soap Commander - Courage

    • Post Shave: Lucky Tiger - After Shave & Face Tonic

    • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. - Unscented Balm

    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - The Cobra and The Canary

Day 2 and unfortunately I have to pull out this Soap Commander soap to fulfill the theme, I don’t have an issue with vegan soaps on principle but this one just doesn’t live up. I recently used this soap and was reminded of how mediocre it is. There are some absolutely great vegan soaps out there! I could’ve pulled out a Southern Witchcraft or Catie’s Bubbles soap and had a much nicer experience today but I already have those brands elsewhere in my calendar so here we are!

#(ICan’tBelieveIt’sNot)ButterTheToast day sponsored by u/OnionMiasma. I got this MMOC in a PIF from him last year with the requirement of using it during AA. Had a great August taming the beast and it helped kickstart my GEM collection! I had a fair amount of choices for todays razor and almost grabbed my MM24 (my favorite GEM) but decided to use the MMOC instead. Working to get some hashtags going early on and this one has more brassing on it!

For my #photocontest submission of the day could there be anything other than a cow in the picture? The only question is what day does it qualify for? #Food? Not really, I eat my fair share of beef but not sure this really works here. #Pets? I know people with pet cows but also have had packs of ground beef in my freezer labeled “Beaufort” so this doesn’t work either. That leaves the #WildAnimals tag for today. Yes I know that cows have been domesticated and aren’t totally “wild” anymore but I would say this qualifies. The only little issue is the Note saying “alive only” but seeing as that is a note and not a rule I’m opting to ignore that in my quest for greatness! #AirBud Also tried to pull in other items in my shave with the Lucky Tiger aftershave and The Cobra & The Canary fragrance!

    • Brush: Zenith 506U XSE unbleached boar #TEXASPIGSTINKMASSACRE #OLDWORLD

    • Razor: Blackland Blackbird (SS) #CNC

    • Blade: Astra Green

    • Lather: Cella Milano - Crema da Barba (Red)

    • Post Shave: House Of Mammoth - Z (uncool) Balm

    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - Yesterday Haze

Todays challenge is to honor our reigning champion u/RedMosquitoMM in some way or another. As we probably all did I went back and looked at some of his posts last year and what better way to do that than by participating in #FOF today. We all remember that he won the Games but also placed second in the FOF contest just showing his complete dominance! I have quite the sus nose so this isn’t my normal thing. But for our champ I’m all in!

Cella: Wow what an absolutely incredibly hard scent to paint with words but I’ll give it a try! Imagine yourself sitting on a hill in the deep heart of Italy. The wind quietly blowing through the trees as birds sing sitting in the branches. You get up and start strolling into town, passing by the sea as the salty water sprays you. The market is bustling with people selling their wares, overwhelming you with choices of olive, spices and every fruit you can imagine. The sellers are calling out to you trying to catch your attention but you are on a mission now, late, behind schedule.

Finally you reach your nonna’s house and the wave of roasted nuts hits you the instant the door opens. Tantalizing you as you follow your nose into the kitchen and find your nonna bent over the open oven pouring her love into her baking. “Pistachio?” You ask. Her response is as simple as it is brutal: “Almond you idiot!”

    And that is Cella.

Todays #photocontest theme of the day is #Vehicles I couldn’t pick just one mode of transportation so I just went for them all!

I grew up in the wonderful era of watching Bill Nye while dreaming about taking field trips with Ms Frizzle.I grew up with this thirst for knowledge and suffered through 4 long years of studying engineering in college I then promptly left that all behind to slip the surly bonds of the earth the instant I was offered a pilot slot.

But let’s reignite that curiosity and to quote the greatest scientist on Mars: Mark Watney “Science the shit out of this!”

Djudges disclaimer: this was all conducted with one soap and setup, just did the entire shave twice.

Hypothesis: Warm water is better for lathering than cold water.

Thesis: Due to the hot process that most soaps are created with I believe that warm water in you lather is far superior for building lather with. This is ignoring any personal preference for warm vs cold lather and purely focused on three criteria: time, consistency and water load

We have all thought we had good lather but my scientific process will prove that the most effective method is using warm water.

    Deliverables:

1: Warm water creates a quicker lather

2: Warm water creates a thicker, creamier lather

3: Soap will hold more warm water than cold

I start my experiment with my equipment laid out and my trusty Lab Notebook to take notes with. To eliminate any chance of the brush holding any residual heat I start with the cold side of things. While I don’t have any thermocouples I do have a nice meat thermometer to monitor the temperature of each lather.

    Process:

Step 1: Soak brush for 5 minutes in the respective temperature water.

Step 2: Spread 1/2 tsp soap in bowl

Step 3: Load brush. Timer started

Step 4: Add water in 1ml increments

    Step 5: Analyze lather created

    Step 6: ~~Profit~~ Shave

Results: As you can see in my very organized notebook the warm water lather is clearly superior in all aspects of my test. Not only does it take less time to lather but it made a perfect consistency bowl of lather that held more water than the cold water.

    Boom! Science Bitch!

My #photocontest entry for today is for the #Literature theme made as scientific as possible.

Edit: Forgot any scent theme justification. This is the 2022 Kairos version. It is clean and floral scent which is perfect for spring time!

Jul. 5, 2023 - The worst shave of LG

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Maggard Green Handle 2 Band Badger #WEDONTNEEDNOSTINKINGBADGERS

    • Razor: Weck Hair Shaper (Translucent Blue Scales) #RAINBOW #YTHO

    • Blade: Personna Hair Shaper Blades

    • Lather: Gillette - Pure Cream

    • Post Shave: Nivea Men - Soothing Post Shave Balm

    • Fragrance: Tommy Bahama - Maritime Deep Blue

Again comes the day that everyone dreads. It’s not that this necessarily has to be a bad shave because there is certainly decent products out there but thats not what we do here. Gillette Pure is a perfectly ok shave but for whatever reason I decided to use an open blade today. I only have 15 open blade shaves under my belt and still very much learning here. I have learned to not really push these open blade too far and escaped without bloodshed but it was not a comfortable or close shave at all!

For todays theme, I bought the Blade, Lather & Post Shave locally. The frag is available locally but was PIFd this sample so didn’t purchase it.

For todays #photocontest I set up like r/Wicked_Edge, showing off the bathroom. Bonus points for using subpar lather today.

Daily Challenges: For todays challenge I took a trip to my local fragrance counter to try out some things. I found the frag I used today and got some sample strips. I am not the greatest at these things but I feel like a scent of Cedarwood, Bergamot, Rosemary and Galbanum would be absolutely perfect! The woody undertone balanced with the clean rosemary and bergamot with the nice green undertone of galbanum sounds incredible!

Wait a second what is this hiding at the back of my soap shelf? Damn that smells good! HOLY SHIT WHAT DO I HAVE HERE? It’s like the soap of my dreams! This has to be made by some crazy magician because this is what dreams are made of!

Candidate for best shot: An Anonymous Djudge remarked:

    • Razor: Karve Christopher Bradley SB-C

    • Fragrance: House of Mammoth - Alive EdT

“And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive”

It’s Trickhole/Dickhole/All the Smellz day and I’m enjoying one from my favorite all around artesian today. House of Mammoth is by far my favorite brand, while there are some individual scents from other people I like more, everything I have tried from Ben has been absolutely incredible! Even the award winning Voices which isn’t my style I can appreciate the incredible work put in to create it.

For todays challenge I’m a little more Slacking than Stacking compared to some people. I had the help of an almost 4 year old this morning so it’s as good as it was going to be.

Going for the #Gaming theme for todays #photocontest picture. I distinctly remember stacking quarters on the HydroShock racing arcade console in the Pizza Inn every Sunday after church. Oh to be able to go back to days like that with no responsibilities!

    Jul. 7, 2023 - The Spice Race

    • Prep: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Omega 10049 Boar #HOLLOW

    • Razor: Blackland Blackbird (SS) #CNC

    • Blade: Astra Green

    • Lather: Talbot Shaving - Authors Ridge

    • Post Shave: House Of Mammoth - Z (uncool) Balm

    • Fragrance: House of Mammoth - Damocles

Damocles: I have absolutely no idea how to describe this other than quoting Ben’s description “Enjoy the power, the luxury, the opulence…” The first time I used this frag I paired it with Orbit which might seem like an odd pairing but the “Cold Space” of Orbit and “Metal” of Damocles work nicely together. I wanted to use that pairing again today but there’s no way I could spin Orbit as “Spicy.” Instead I took the opportunity to use this sample of Authors Ridge. This soap certainly fulfills the “Spicy” requirement but in a different way than Damocles. It’s an Earthy Spice that is dark and intoxicating, unlike any of my normal scents. This is the only thing I’ve tried from Talbot Shaving and rather enjoyed the lather.

For todays daily challenge: if you’ve been following my #photocontest (Todays is #Space) you might have noticed a theme in my pictures. I have two young boys and building legos with my oldest son is the closest thing to a hobby that I have right now. I have really enjoyed building things with him for this month. He is not even 4 yet and can build entire sets by himself from the instructions! I love to sit with him and watch his imagination go wild with all of the things he wants to build! I managed to snag a ton of Legos from my childhood from my parents house, sometimes it pays off to have the first grandchildren in the family!

My other hobby is baking but I don’t get to do that as much as I want to. I got a sourdough starter from a friend about a year ago and have made some pretty delicious things with it! I love it because it is a mixture of following the recipe with experimentation combined with my passion of eating!

Jul. 8, 2023 - Praise to the Wetshaving Mecca

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Maggard Razors Green Handle 2 Band Badger

    • Razor: EldrormR Industries MM24

    • Blade: GEM PTFE (15)

    • Lather: Maggard Razors - Limes & Bergamot

    • Post Shave: T.N. Dickinson’s - Witch Hazel

    • Post Shave: House Of Mammoth - Z (uncool) Balm

    • Fragrance: Dr Jon’s - Savannah Sunrise

There’s not many companies that can provide the crack thrill enough to satisfy us addicts but Maggard Razors takes the cake there! Not only do that carry everything under the sun but also reasonably priced. Oh yeah and they ship insanely fast! I’ve see them send shipping notifications within an hour of placing the order! I unfortunately didn’t get to visit at the recent Wetshaving meetup, maybe next year I’ll be able to make the journey to the promised land of wetshaving.

Limes & Bergamot is unapologetically citrus and I love it! Sometimes I don’t want a nuanced scent and happy with the simple things. Todays brush was a Black Friday deal that I think was ~$20 and was my first natural hair brush. It’s nothing special but does the job well! I got the Dr Jon’s fragrance from Maggard as well while they handled the last part of the Dr Jon’s inventory. (RIP) It is similarly unapologetic in its scent. There are more layers there but it’s very obvious with its peach and florals.

Daily Challenge link! Help me feel better about my soap addiction please!

Todays #photocontest is a representation of the Small Business world where many people get started at a Farmers Market. I went with a stand selling #vegetables today!

    Jul. 9, 2023 - COFFEE!

    • Prep: Hot Cup of Joe

    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Mighty Duck v19 Fanchurian #SHD #COMPOSITE

    • Razor: Gillette Ranger Tech #REGUS

    • Blade: Astra Green (1)

    • Lather: Proraso - Green Tea & Oat

    • Post Shave: Folgers - Black Silk Coffee

    • Fragrance: Chatillon Lux - 1904

The correct question every morning is not “do you want coffee?” It’s “how much coffee?” As a parent of two young boys (4 & 1) my morning revolves around coffee. This is an unfortunate reality to life, I would much rather be able to wake up well rested but when you have a child jumping on your head at 5am there’s only so much hope for the morning going well.

My shave might be a little all over the place, but I’m shooting for 30 brands and the rules clearly say “the scent of tea or coffee” so I figured both is good!

Shave in yo kitchen? I’ll do you one better than that I figured what’s better than a kitchen inside a kitchen? First things first, make coffee! Gather supplies while pondering bowl options, then set up shaving station with a view! Get lathering making sure to use that good good bean juice. Finally shave and apply splash and profit!

I just recently found this razor at a local antique store and this is my first time getting to use it. I thought it was a super speed at first but thanks to some help here with the ID found out what it is. Pretty cool history that it was only made in 2 years, I think this is the 1941 model but it doesn’t have a date code so best I can tell is by the lack of end caps.

My #photocontest of the day is #Society seeing as making coffee is an “everyday thing” this totally qualifies!

    Jul. 9, 2023 - Ring that Bell!

    • Prep: Hot Shower and CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Mighty Duck v19 Fanchurian #SHD #COMPOSITE

    • Razor: GEM G-bar

    • Blade: GEM PTFE (16)

    • Lather: Summer Break Soaps - Bell Ringer

    • Post Shave: T.N. Dickinson’s - Witch Hazel

    • Post Shave: House Of Mammoth - Z (uncool) Balm

    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - Every Storm a Serenade

Now at first glance you might not think this soap is the best for todays theme. Yes, I have Paganinis Violin, no I didn’t want to use it today (and no not because it’s unscented u/merikus!) The name of this soap brings me back to middle/high school days when I played in my church’s youth handbell choir. Let me first point out that I am horrendously NOT musically inclined at all! Like to the point where I color coded the notes I had to play so I could remember them. I could’ve just learned to read music but nope…We were pretty darn good though, my favorite song we played was Carol of the Bells and we played it every Christmas for the church service. I had a bunch of friends in the marching band in high school and this was how I got to hang out with them and get to enjoy something that they enjoyed.

Bell Ringer is an incredibly bright and fresh mango scent. It also was just announced that it’s being retired (RIP) which makes me appreciate my tub even more! IA - Every Storm a Serenade might not quite match scent wise but going with the musical theme here so it fits! I’ve enjoyed a lot of the scents I’ve been able to sample from Imaginary Authors and really like their concept for their name. I love to read books when I have free time (which is never lately) so this just jived with me.

Todays #photocontest obviously has to be #Music. I mean how could you do any other one on Musical Monday?

Edit: totally forgot my tub art! I took some artistic liberties to add music notes and a bell to the tub. Try to not stare too long into it’s beauty!

    Jul. 11, 2023 - Sunny Days

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Zenith r/Wetshaving Exclusive MOAR BOAR #CHONK #OLDWORLD

    • Razor: Blackland Blackbird (SS) #CNC

    • Blade: Astra Green (1)

    • Lather: Spearhead - Seaforth! Sea Spice Lime

    • Post Shave: Spearhead - Seaforth! Sea Spice Lime Toner

    • Fragrance: Spearhead - Seaforth! Sea Spice Lime EdT

Theme justification: Let’s pretend like anyone will argue this scent today because I just feel like arguing today.

It’s not explicitly marketed as a summer scent even though it was released in April/May initially nor is it for a summer holiday. So I need to prove that it “Prominently feature aquatic or citrus accords.”

So let’s look at the name Sea Spice Lime:

    Sea = Aquatic ✅ (Duh)

Spice - this is tricky but it is “a touch of west indies bay” and bay = Aquatic ✅

    Lime = Citrus ✅ (Duh)

Yep so 3/3 notes in the name qualify! Lawyered

When this was announced I was still fairly young in my wetshaving career but set an alarm to buy this on release day. It has absolutely lived up to the hype including being named one of (if not the) top scents of the year! In the 2 years since then I’ve gone through a tub and a half of it while also buying the 6oz ICE tub, toner, frag and bath bars. Safe to say this is my favorite scent! Also the wife is crazy for it so Win-Win-Win!

Daily Challenge and #photocontest (#masterpieces) this is the photo I’m most proud of, my masterpiece! I am not a good photographer and I know it, but I am especially proud of this picture! I managed to capture one word of the name on each piece of software. I took this month as a personal challenge to take a photo for every shave to work on that. I’m also breaking from my theme of the month today, but don’t you worry I’ll be back tomorrow!

    Jul. 12, 2023 - I’m not Fat, I’m just Fuffly!

Fufluns scent is “everything sweet that comes from green” which is a great description as I have a really hard time picking out any individual scent. Instead I get just this feeling of walking outside through a vineyard or orchard, it’s not a dirty scent, but reminds me of nature in a way. Shire 2 was a great pairing of a different type of green/outdoors scent. The Fresh Air and Violets take you to a place outside but it’s not as sweet as Fufluns.

For todays theme: “Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil” is listed as the first ingredient for both the soap and splash as you can see on the linked product pages! This was my first time using ALYM products (I think, for sure the splash) and it left a little to be desired. I also had just gone swimming in a salt water pool so my skin was dry as a bone when I tried to shave. I recently got this set so will have to revisit it at some point.

Todays challenge leads me to a bit of a dilemma. You see when I first started shaving I exclusively bowl lathered but over the past 6 months or so I’ve swapped to primarily face lathering. I guess that’s what happens when you actually get some decent brushes! So to combat that dilemma I decided to face lather my right side of my face and bowl lather my left side leaving no doubt that I did the reverse of my usual!

Todays #photocontest I leaned into the #Royal theme that AYLM logo has. It’s definitely a royal looking logo so I matched that theme with my setup!

    Jul. 13, 2023 - What a bunch of Baloney!

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Zenith r/Wetshaving Exclusive MOAR BOAR #CHONK #OLDWORLD

    • Razor: Blackland Blackbird (SS) #CNC

    • Blade: Astra Green (3)

    • Lather: Talent Soap Factory - Surf Shop

    • Post Shave: House Of Mammoth - Z (uncool) Balm

    • Fragrance: Chatillon Lux - Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli

Alright so I really don’t like Patchouli but all is fair in Love and the Lather Games! This soap definitely fits the bill as the description is: “Everyone digs this groovy scent! Patchouli, Sandalwood, amber, ylang, musk, violet, cedarwood, and Vanilla notes round out this cool, far out fragrance. Peace, man.” Yet another shave with a new brand of soap, over the past few months I’ve accumulated a crap ton of samples through various PIFs or people just sending me shit. This is a vegan base which performed pretty darn well I’d say! It lacks the slickness of a tallow based soap but brought the skin food to the table!

Chatillon Lux Y/R/P is the perfect pairing for this soap even if I don’t like it. Rose and Patchouli are the most present to my sus nose but seeing as that’s 2/3 notes I feel like I’m doing ok!

Daily challenge: So all things point to only one song that I can pick for today: Surfin USA by The Beatles

Reason 1: Obviously the name of this soap “Surf Shop” is an ode to life at the beach

Reason 2: I’m vacationing at the beach currently

    Reason 3: The Beatles rock!

Todays #photocontest theme is every hippies worst nightmare: The Law.

    • Fragrance: Bruno Fazzolari - Corpse Reviver

Alright djudges: WHAT THE FUCK? Like why couldn’t we have kept the “Desert Island” theme instead of this bullshit menthol laden day. Yeah yeah I get that “FrIgId FrIdAy” just rolls off of the tongue but did we have to?

Cryogen just sucks. I mean it’s pure menthol. And then I was mental and thought Frost Drops would be a good follow up. This is what this month does to a guy…oh yeah and y’all decided to turn it up to 11 with the daily challenge. Again: WHAT THE FUCK? I guess thank you for giving us the out for just the cheeks because that’s all I could stand even with the numbness and tingling provided by the icy software.

Corpse Reviver matches the theme in name, menthol wakes you up in the morning when you’re feeling like a corpse.

    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Alive Balm

    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - The Soft Lawn

TBH I really don’t know what a Chypre is supposed to smell like and only realized that Alive is classified as a Chypre when looking up things for today. This makes me happy because now I have a matching aftershave for todays theme!

For the fragrance the scent doesn’t perfectly match but Chypre = Sheep, Sheep eat Grass, and Grass = Lawn. Boom on theme! Also I wanted something to tie into the Tennis theme for todays #photocontest #Sport picture!

Lots of incredible things to say about Stirling Soap today. I swapped out the brush I had set out for this synthetic from them. Like many of us, Stirling was the first full size tub of soap I purchased in the infancy of my wetshaving career. Their breadth of products while keeping incredible price and performance says a lot about the effort that Rod and Mandy put into their business! They care about this community so much that Rod was willing to take “repeated kicks to the groin” to make the MOAR BOAR brushes reality!

I have no interest in videoing myself shave for todays challenge. To begin with I shave how God intended us to : buck naked! And that’s a show that only one person has an admission ticket to so unfortunately y’all get left out.

But to satisfy the requirements of the challenge I must share my wettuber of choice. There are a ton of incredible options out there but I keep coming back to sgrdaddy’s channel. You can pretty much guarantee that he has reviewed the scent that you’re looking for and if you need encouragement to push that blade just one more shave he’s got it!

Jul. 16, 2023 - Going to the Barber

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Omega 10049 Boar #HOLLOW

    • Razor: Weck Hair Shaper (Translucent Blue Scales) #RAINBOW

    • Blade: Personna

    • Lather: Zingari Man - The Wanderer

    • Post Shave: House Of Mammoth - Z (uncool) Balm

    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - Telegrama

Memes first because I know that’s all anyone cares about today.

Telegrama reminds me of a barbershop without being a “barbershop” scent. The talc and linens scent pair really nicely with that theme scent. It’s one of my favorite samples from Imaginary Authors and one of their longer lasting scents. A bunch of their stuff just dies the instant it hits my skin so I’m glad that I like the ones that last! The Wanderer was a smoosh that I got a while ago and forgot about. I REALLY need to clean out my sample drawer and use up some of them.

Rounding out the barber experience today with a barber style handle and shavette. I haven’t ever found a place that will give you a shave but from what I hear shavettes are what they use due to the sterilization requirements for true straights. One day I’ll find somewhere that does!

I asked my son to build a barbershop today for my #photocontest Urban/architecture submission. I think he did a great job! We made it with a little apartment on top!

    Jul. 17, 2023 - 3 is better than 2!

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Omega 10049 Boar

    • Razor: EldrormR Industries MM24

    • Blade: GEM PTFE (17)

    • Lather: House of Mammoth/Declaration Grooming - Cerberus

    • Post Shave: Osma - Alum

    • Fragrance: House of Mammoth - Sandalorian

Cerberus was one of the biggest hyped collaborations that has happened in the relatively short time that I’ve been wetshaving. Three of the biggest brands coming together each working on a piece of this project. I love how they split up the different parts of the trifecta so everyone had a part to play. Unfortunately I only have the soap but I get to enjoy House of Mammoths incredible scent in the great Milksteak base from Declaration Grooming! I used Sandalorian which was the pre-cursor to Cerberus and a super short run fragrance. This was the last spray in my decant and I just recently missed a whole bottle of it by about 15 minutes. Thankfully I was able to work out another decant of this which I should have soon! Sandalorian is a bit more stone fruit forward and a little “too weird” for a general release and eventually became Cerberus.

It’s an awesome coincidence that today is House of Mammoth’s sponsor spotlight as I had this set out a long time ago for today! House of Mammoth is my overall favorite artesian for a lot of reasons. To begin with, Ben does incredible stuff with scents! The way he captures an idea and puts it into fragrance is amazing! But beyond that, the way he centers his whole brand around supporting causes that he believes in is something that I want to throw my entire support behind! I about cried this week when he announced Everett and that will be pre-ordered the instant he opens that up!

I don’t typically use alum, but I do have a bar of Osma LuXuRy alum that I used today. TBH I’ve never used anything else so I have nothing to compare it to. Very little feedback from it today which was nice! The MM24 is another instance of something “Happy Together” as great papa Eld married two razors together to create the best GEM razor that I own!

Todays #photocontest jumps on board with the “happy together” theme with #pets.

    • Post Shave: Southern Witchcrafts - Autumn Ash

    • Fragrance: Southern Witchcrafts - Boonana

BOO! I didn’t scare you did I? Don’t worry I don’t have any videos of drinking lather today, just spooky decaying banana soap that is perfect for autumn. Or perfect for u/j33pguy13’s autumn I should say because banana is not really my thing. This soap is so much more than just banana thankfully, Southern Witchcrafts put their signature touch on this scent transforming the sweet banana into something deep and dark.

Paired it with Autumn Ash because it fit with the theme, not only is all of my software a fall/Autumn scent but all made by SW! Their scents can be a bit polarizing and difficult to grasp at first, especially for people like me with sus noses. Their vegan base is absolutely top notch though and not “just for a vegan base.” It will hold its own against any base out there which is a testament to the work they do!

Todays Daily Challenge proof I’m sorry judges for the pain you have to suffer through today.

I really enjoyed making todays #photocontest picture of Light Sources. I was trying to show off light without actually showing what was actually making the light.

    • Lather: St. James of London - Sandalwood and Bergamot Cream

    • Post Shave: House Of Mammoth - Z (uncool) Balm

    • Fragrance: Lesli Wood - Ossuary

    Daily Challenge

Yeah so I had a sock out on my dresser for todays challenge but this morning realized that I have a little pride in myself and 0.2 points isn’t going to make or break anything for me. So instead I’m here laughing at the posts of people regretting their decision without any guilt.

St James of London cream is one of the better ones I’ve tried, it holds a good bit of water and gets pretty darn slick! It’s just boring…Sandalwood & Bergamot smells pleasant but there’s nothing to it! No layers, nothing to discover as you lather and shave. The cream does a good job but you don’t have to work to make the lather, it’s just there. Half of what I really like about this hobby is the process and attention to detail needed to make a good lather and hold the right angle when shaving. I have kept this tub for those random 5 AM shaves when I really need to just be on autopilot and not spend any extra time on the process.

Todays pairing to the cream is all based on my #photocontest theme of #Extinct Animals. My picture is self explanatory but the rest could use explaining. My brush is a v19 Fanchurian which is no longer sold (Extinct) My razor is out of production (extinct) My balm has a Mammoth on it (Extinct) Finally my fragrances name “Ossuary” literally is a place for holding the bones of the dead (Extinct)

Jul. 20, 2023 -I'm blue da ba dee da ba di

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Stirling Soap Co. 2 Band Synthetic

    • Razor: Weck Hair Shaper (Translucent Blue Scales)

    • Blade: Kismet

    • Lather: Stirling Soap Co - Deep Blue Sea

    • Post Shave: T.N. Dickinson’s - Witch Hazel

    • Post Shave: House Of Mammoth - Z (uncool) Balm

    • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co. - Deep Blue Sea

I went all in on todays #photocontest theme of #Water. Stirling makes a lot of dupes which is perfectly ok, and Deep Blue Sea is fantastic! It’s a Bleu De Chanel dupe and I should try to find some of the original to compare it to this.

Here’s the point where I would rave about Stirling’s performance because I always get a great shave with their stuff but the daily challenge forced my hand. Between this and the sock lather yesterday I just picture the djudges laughing at us trying to one up themselves with the pain and torture of this month.

I probably should have actually read the challenge before choosing my razor and taking my picture for today. But this is the only blue razor I have and it fits the theme too well not to. So I just went for it…I loaded up my brush and face lathered without adding any extra water to make the pastiest lather I could. I typically love my lather to be super drippy, especially with the Hair Shaper so this was tough. I worked it the best I could today and got a surprisingly close shave. It took a ton of time and attention to make sure to not use any extra pressure due to the lack in slickness.

    Jul. 21, 2023 - Fougère Friday!

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Zenith r/Wetshaving Exclusive MOAR BOAR

    • Razor: Karve Christopher Bradley SB-C

    • Blade: Astra Green

    • Lather: Taylor Of Old Bond Street - Jermyn Street Collection

    • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. - Varen Splash

    • Fragrance: House of Mammoth - Dammusi

Crazy busy day trying to wrap things up for the week and had to go pick up a formerly broken jet last minute. Never going to complain about getting to fly but so far behind on work that only just now got to type up this morning SOTD.

Jermyn Street Collection is a “modern fresh fougère” and a pretty nice scent! I might think about buying this if this was in a better base. It might have something to do with this sample being crazy dried up, it almost was the consistency of a hard soap instead of a cream!

Varen Splash is strong strong oakmoss but I love it! I really want to get a tub but the wife scrunched up her nose at me today so probably won’t happen.

Dammusi may not be classified as a Fougère or even have the right scent notes but the “cool earthy stone” note that lingers is an incredible pairing with a Fougère. Moss thrives in those cool dark places and (MOIMO) this works nicely together. Also Dammusi slaps so never going to turn down the chance to use it!

My #photocontest theme of the day is mobile phones. Let my son pick out the “apps” to put on the phone we built. It’s a little rudimentary but with the imagination of a 3 year old you can see the inspiration!

    Jul. 22, 2023 - A Berry Weird Shave

    • Prep: Sit - Rethink my life

    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Mighty Duck v19 Fanchurian

    • Razor: GEM MMOC

    • Blade: GEM PTFE

    • Lather: Caties Bubbles - Blugère

    • Post Shave: Lucky Tiger - Aftershave & Face Tonic

    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - Falling Into The Sea

Berries Berries Berries. As a few other of my co-shavers today I explored the wonderful internet for clarification on what qualifies as a “Berry” for today. Obviously the blueberry in Blugère qualifies but I needed something to pair that with for today. Then I happened upon the subset of berries called Hesperidium which all citrus falls under! Boom! I have a shit ton of citrus scents so set there! Lucky Tiger is “citrusy orange, tangerine and grapefruit” so all citrus there. Falling into the Sea is “Lemon, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lychee, Tropical Flowers & Warm Sand” of which the top three are citrus and Lychee is in the soapberry family!

Todays #photocontest #Fruit theme is along the same daily theme since the djudges so helpfully pointed out that banana is a berry! I promise this isn’t a picture of u/j33pguy13 but I’ll take the 30 points anyway!

Alright so now we get down to business with today. I definitely didn’t feel confident about shaving my legs today, both in ability and in willingness. I didn’t want to let everyone down so I searched for some inspiration. Suddenly I remembered a certain unique lathering technique from a previous years Lather Games Daily Challenge and had it figured out! I scooped out some soap from the sample, smeared it over the target area and went with it! Worked up a good chest lather and started mowing down the growth. The MMOC plowed through the jungle with ease

Before and After. I feel weirdly naked, I’ve always thought my chest hair looked weird but not sure this is an upgrade. It will be fun to see my wife’s reaction, I did this after she left for work and she mentioned going to the pool tomorrow…

Jul. 23, 2023 - Smelling good in the neighborhood

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Zenith r/Wetshaving Exclusive MOAR BOAR

    • Razor: Karve Christopher Bradley SB-C

    • Blade: Astra Green

    • Lather: Wholly Kaw - Cedrati

    • Post Shave: Spearhead - Seaforth! Sea Spice Lime Toner

    • Fragrance: House of Mammoth - Sonder

There are quite a few scents that could qualify for this theme but this pairing evokes a great memory from last fall. This is the exact setup that I wore for my little sister’s wedding last year and I got several comments that day from my family about it! Cedrati is “uplifting fresh and citrus with woody notes forming the anchor” and pairs really nicely with Sonder and its “bright citrus opening…and a delicious creamy woody base.” These two play really well together but then I’ll pair Sonder with basically anything because it’s just that damn good! SSL toner just magnified the citrus theme of the day and is the next top contender for complements!

This is the only Wholly Kaw tub that I have, for whatever reason I haven’t really tried many of their stuff. I know that this one is a dupe scent which doesn’t bother me but would be nice if they put that on their product description. The Siero base is pretty good and while I don’t use it often, I think I will pass the audit of today! All of the proof I need is this picture of my lather running down my arm.

Todays #photocontest theme is #drinks. Built a little soda fountain station complete with cups, condiments and a trash can!

    Jul. 24, 2023 - u/Worbx Appreciation Day

    • Brush: Omega 10049 Boar

    • Razor: Blackland Era SB LVL 3

    • Blade: Derby Premium

    • Lather: Chicago Grooming Co. - Excursion

    • Post Shave: Osma - Alum

    • Fragrance: House of Mammoth - 福 (Fú Dào)

Todays shave is sponsored by u/worbx as literally everything used today came from him. The razor, blade, brush, alum and fragrance all came from his Adventus calendar PIF last year and the soap came from his pre-LG Smoosh PIF where he generously gave out smooshes to everyone who entered.

I just want to take a moment and spell out how incredibly generous he is. The Adventus Calendar PIF is probably one of the top 5 most generous PIFs I’ve ever seen in this sub. There might be a couple more out there price wise but the thought and effort of this gift was incredible and I hope to return that to this sub. In case you missed it here is the album of what that calendar consisted of. 24 bags of items to be opened one a day during December 1-24th!

Alright, enough talking about his generous PIFs, next I can talk about his time and dedication to this sub. Every month he pours over the hot mess that is our SOTD threads and presents us with the Lather Log detailing what we used and highlighting the great brands we have here. As someone who once worked as a Data Analyst I understand how much work that takes, especially without a set standard for how we post our SOTDs!

Daily Challenge: in case you missed my subtlety above, u/Worbx is awesome!

Todays #photocontest theme is #Scenery showing off a look at my Christmas last year rolling in my gifts from u/Worbx.

You deserve one more Thank You u/Worbx!

    Jul. 25, 2023 - Ye Old Christmas!

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Chisel & Hound Mighty Duck v19 Fanchurian

    • Razor: Gillette Ranger Tech

    • Blade: Personna P74 (1)

    • Lather: Noble Otter - ‘Tis the Season

    • Post Shave: Osma - Alum

    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - Memoirs Of A Trespasser

All it takes is one glance at this tub to know it fits todays theme! Noble Otters label art is incredible and this is no exception! The otter dressed up as Santa is perfect. This was the first time I’ve used this after picking it up on a great sale, it completely takes me to Christmas sitting next to the tree. The pine sticks out on top with a great sweet raspberry and vanilla undertone. Memoirs of a Trespasser just boosts the vanilla and wood of this soap and brings me to December. December is exactly where I want to be right now because it’s 93F today and I’m sweating my balls off smelling like a Christmas tree…just perfect 😂

I had planned on using a different brush today but after seeing todays sponsor I swapped to this brush. This is my only “nice” brush and I am absolutely in love with the v19 knot! I know it’s not a hand tied knot but it’s a huge improvement from the two band badger I had before!

I distinctly remember this daily challenge from the past 2 Lather Games and my experience from today is very similar. The actual act of shaving went pretty well, slower than normal but only one tiny bleeder. Lathering with my left hand was an absolute nightmare! Something about that circular motion to load the brush just doesn’t click for me.

As a part of my #photocontest theme of #history I broke out my only vintage DE along with the vintage P74 blade I just acquired! This was the first time using the P74 and it lives up to the hype! Super smooth shaver and I’m excited to get to see the longevity of these blades!

For my Lego part of the pic. This particular item complied with the r/askhistorians rule of being at least 20 years old! I got this Rock Raiders lava monster in a set for Christmas in 1999! I recently ~~raided~~ was given a bunch of legos from my childhood. My parents have held onto two giant boxes of legos for all of these years and (thanks to me being the only one to give them grandkids so far) I got them! Edit: Link with proof of age of this set.

    Jul. 25, 2023 - Trying out GRUYE

    • Prep: Grocery Shopping

    • Brush: Basting brush

    • Razor: Hemlock Bread Lame #AllNatural

    • Blade: Personna whatever came with the Lame (1)

    • Lather: Private Selections - Cheddar and Gruyère Cheese

    • Post Shave: Hot - Shower

    • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann - 42

Todays #photocontest is #food (duh!) I made a lego sandwich to go along with me wonderful lather product! Also 42 has a drink in its ingredients so that qualifies as food adjacent!

So I started hearing about this weird thought about using GRUYE cheese to shave all year long and I’ll have to admit I was confused at first. I mean we have so many good options for soap why would you want to limit yourself to one thing? And then I heard they also aren’t buying anything else all year! Lots of people who have been doing this a long time! People like u/Wyze0ne u/enndeegee u/visceralwatch & others I can’t remember right now pledged to this cause all year long. There were some staunch opposers of this with u/djundjila and u/j33pguy13 leading the pack shouting what a silly idea this was.

Finally after 7 months I cannot withstand the urge and I simply have to see what all the rage is about! Call it FOMO, call it stupidity but I just had to know!

So I took a trip to the grocery store, well 3 stores actually. You see I live in the rural nowhere of the US so to find this acclaimed GRUYE took a while. To top that off, I couldn’t even find a pure block of it so I’m just going with close enough today. I’m sure it will do the job, just might be similar to non Osma alum and be a little less luxury.

    Onto the shave!

Ok so what the ABSOLUTE FUCK!?! I don’t understand how this can work at all! I took my block of cheese broke it up into a bowl and started trying to melt it incorporating water like a normal lather. Trying to get it on the face was an absolute nightmare! I tried at first with by brush and eventually resorted to using my hands to get anything to stick at all! Next up came the shave which was pretty tricky as the lather just kept falling off of my face. I managed to get a single pass on each cheek, not touching anything else today! All I can smell is cheese now, but at least it tastes good!

Now I know, this GRUYE craziness isn’t for me! I totally understand why some of y’all haven’t been able to stick with it! I know there’s no way I could. After this experience I need some retail therapy, u/j33pguy13 what crack are you selling?

Speaking of crack, here’s my current den! 30 full size tubs and countless samples! The shelf I built last summer while on paternity leave! It was a fun build where I can show off my favorite soaps!

Edit: fixed a link and tag

    Jul. 27, 2023 - Flowers!

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Summer Break Soaps Grant w/AP Shaveco G5C #FAUXFUR

    • Razor: Merkur 34c

    • Blade: Personna P74

    • Lather: Shannon's Soaps - Lavender Lemongrass

    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann - Reserve Lavender Splash

    • Fragrance: House of Mammoth - Beloved

When I first started wetshaving I was very hesitant of floral scents and avoided pretty much everything with floral scents. Over the past couple years my opinion has changed a bit and now really enjoy some floral scents! I wouldn’t normally use a sus soap like Shannon’s but 30 brands on theme is difficult without branching out a little. Either this soap has way too much frag in it or I have a sensitivity to lemongrass because my face is a little tingly today. Thankfully got to round out the shave with two wonderful Lavender central scents in Reserve Lavender and Beloved.

For todays challenge I had a dilemma in front of me. I typically shave all natural but since I have neighbors this led me to a decision to make. Either shave outside or put on clothes. I chose the latter, threw on some shorts, walked past my wife looking at me like this and set up on the back porch. I had a great view of our 75+ feet of cut flower garden to enjoy during the shave!

Todays #photocontest theme is another no brainer of #flowers

    Jul. 28, 2023 - Cheap Cheap

    • Prep: CeraVe - Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • Brush: Dreadnought Avenger

    • Razor: GEM Junior

    • Blade: GEM PTFE (1)

    • Lather: Arko - Shave Stick

    • Post Shave: T.N. Dickinson’s - Witch Hazel

    • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz - SIR Irish Moos

Todays shave sponsored by the letter “$” and the number “free.”

Todays daily challenge totally messed up my calendar earlier in the month because I originally had Moos EdT for Fougère Friday but realized it’s my cheapest per ml frag and had to save it for today.

Edit: forgot to say how awesome saving money is! As a father of two boys life is fucking expensive! So to take the chance and see how cheap this could be was refreshing. Now I’m never going to swap over to Arko full time because I love my smellz too much but it provided a perfectly serviceable shave! The brush on the other hand…total trash! I got less than what I paid for with it!

My pre shave is the only one I have so it’s my cheapest ✅

My brush I got for $3.75 and definitely overpaid for it ✅

My razor was hard to find an old MSRP for but I got it in a bundle of razors so it was the cheapest for me. Also the cheapest to buy right now. ✅

My blade is the only GEM blade I have. Also cost per shave is the lowest. $20/100 blades and easily get 30+ shaves from them. So cost is below $0.01 per shave. Compared to Astra Greens which are $7/100 and I get ~6 shaves per makes it right at $0.01 per shave. ✅

Arko is $2.99/75g stick or $1.13/1oz. Even cheaper than the gold standard of Stirling at $2.45/1oz! ✅

The Witch Hazel splash I get at Walmart and is $3.98/16oz bottle or $0.25/1oz! ✅

SIR Irish Moos I got at SmallFlower for $28.50/50ml. That puts it at $0.57/ml and everything else I have is at least $1.00/ml so cheapest by far! ✅

Todays #photocontest theme is ditches/trenches/holes in the ground. I took a fun interpretation of this and built a >!Hobbit Hole!<

I can’t believe that this month is already over! This was my 3rd time doing the Games and it went by the quickest of the three. It might be because of the traveling that I had to do during this month and couldn’t dive into each thread every day. It’s always a blast but I’m definitely looking forward AA when I don’t have to bounce around between unfamiliar bases as much. Just will be Wecking my face on a daily basis!

Thank you judges so much for putting this on! I know it’s a shit ton of work but it is greatly appreciated! As my post yesterday showed, the amount of effort some people put into their posts is astounding and I love it! The people are the reason why this community is so incredible!

My last #photocontest of the month is Story/Thematic theme! I got (almost) everything together from my whole month of building for today to remind me of the month! I actually ran out of room on the table and there also are some things that didn’t survive to the end of the month. Here is the album of every days build! I had a ton of fun and really just took this challenge to myself!
