    Here we go with day one of AA and my first ever straight razor shave. Two passes both with the grain while I get used to this thing, so not my best shave ever but perfectly acceptable and nearly bloodless (one small weeper on my chin). I even managed to shave the left side of my face holding the razor in my left hand, and still kept my ear attached. It’s definitely not comfortable yet, but that’s what the next 30 days are for. This new Zenith scrubby boar (unboxing video here) is indeed scrubby and ate about three shaves worth of lather, but that should settle down as it breaks in over the next month.

    Day two ever with a straight and it already felt much more comfortable than yesterday. Sticking with using both hands. Razor in my right hand for my right side and razor in left for my left side which makes stretching the skin much easier and takes most of the effort from shaving my jawline since I can just pull most of that skin up over my jaw to where it’s flat (maybe one of the positives of looser aging skin?). Mostly comfortable other than my chin that is. I managed to get it mostly smooth but that never felt comfortable and I really have no good idea how to even go at it other than just some sketchy trial and error.

    In a classic rookie mistake I completely forgot about stropping the razor before the shave today. Since I need to get at least another 29 shaves out of this edge, I need to do better at remembering that step…

    This boar was noticeably less skritchy today and already splaying well, though it’s still eating lather like the hungry pig that it came from.

    Straight shave number three. Progress on my chin today. I tried the rolling technique from the video that u/BeerEater1 shared yesterday and that helped. It still doesn’t exactly feel comfortable but definitely more comfortable than anything else I had tried. The brush is getting nice already, though still eating lather like it’s all you can eat. And bonus points: I did remember to strop today.

    Day four with the straight and apparently this is the day that over confidence makes its appearance. I managed to prick the flap on my left ear not once but twice with the point of the razor. I’ve been trying to be super careful to avoid that and today it finally happened. Shaving my chin is starting to be a little bit more natural and I ended up with my smoothest shave yet today. And I did remember to strop before the shave.

    The scrubby boar delivered great lather for the first pass today, but it’s still a hungry little lather hog, so I had to reload for the second pass.

    Straight shave number six and I think maybe it’s starting to feel more comfortable. Maybe? I experimented with XTG and ATG on my chin today as I continue to figure out how to get that as smooth (or at least close to it) as my cheeks and did succeed in getting it smoother than usual, but I also got a couple weepers…

    First sighting of split tips on the brush today and it’s almost holding enough lather for two passes now. Just a small reload needed today before during pass two.

    Straight shave number seven. I’d say chin WTG now doesn’t feel uncomfortable. Not quite ready to say comfortable yet, but no longer totally awkward. I still haven’t found anything approaching comfortable for going XTG or ATG on my chin though so I’m struggling to get it as smooth as I’d prefer (I’m not looking for BBS, but ideally better than I’m getting it right now.)

    I’m still having to reload for the second pass, and the brush paradoxically felt pokier today than it has since the first day. Not really sure I could say why… There is also some green oxidation starting to be visible on the copper on the inside top ring of the brush which I’m a little worried is going to start to stain the bristles. Not sure what to do about that…

    I enter double digits in straight shaves today with my tenth straight shave ever. Our bags were delayed coming home from the beach last night, so I was a little worried this shave wasn’t going to happen today. We had checked all my son’s lacrosse equipment and he has tryouts tomorrow, so we really needed to make sure we had them, so we decided to stick around at the airport for two hours to pick them up after the next flight (which they came in on) rather than trust the airline to deliver them on time (and not lose them) and as a result I got all my shave gear as well.

    Not my closest shave ever, and I got one small cut on my chin, but on a positive note, there was zero sting from the splash so no irritation.

    Straight shave number 11. Not quite as good as yesterday but mostly fine. I still can’t my chin to as smooth as I’d like and trying harder just seems to result in cutting myself (see yesterday). I don’t need to be anywhere today so will take a so so shave with no cuts.

    The brush continues to improve, but also tends to be continue to be lather hungry.

    Straight shave number twelve. I went XTG on the second pass today on my cheeks and chin instead of two WTG passes, and ATG on my neck since I couldn’t seem to figure out any way to go XTG.

    I’m not quite sure the best way to hold the razor for XTG on my cheeks and chin but I managed to make it work. I’m not sure I got my cheeks any smoother than just two WTG passes was giving but I didn’t cut myself either so that’s something. There was progress on my chin today. The second XTG pass got it smoother than just WTG but still felt really awkward.

    The brush is getting soft now with no noticeable pokiness today, but I’m still needing to reload for the second pass.

    Straight shave fourteen and it was the smoothest yet. Two pass WTG and ATG which is exactly what I do with a DE, and for the first time with a straight the results were comparable to a good DE shave (minus a few points for cutting myself a few times). I can definitely say it’s starting to feel more comfortable now, though that comfort is probably leading to overconfidence (see the cuts mentioned above).

    Surprisingly I’m not getting tired of the monotony of AA. Rather, I’m still enjoying this setup (both software and hardware) each day.

    First day of school for the boys here and they both seemed excited to go back and see their friends. I’m excited to have a quiet home office again…

    Straight shave fifteen. Approaching halfway through the month. Tomorrow will be past it. I wasn’t paying enough attention this morning and managed to reopen two of the cuts from yesterday on the first pass. Kept the second pass to WTG as well and avoided those spots. Seems like it just peeled the small scab off and didn’t cut any deeper so they stopped pretty quickly. Overall a fine, but not great shave.

    Straight shave seventeen (ever). Another really good shave. That’s two nice shaves out of the last three days. And today for the first time shaving my chin felt reasonably comfortable. I’m really starting to enjoy straight shaving, and I’m glad that AA got me to commit to it. Still happy with Alive each day too, and while the brush remains hungry, at least it’s getting soft.

    Straight shave nineteen and another really good one. No cuts or irritation, including not reopening the cut on my jaw that I somehow haven’t been able to successfully avoid until today. The only place the AS stung was the blister on my hand from yardwork yesterday (ouch!). The edge is still going strong, but I am starting to get curious about honing (after AA of course) so that I can keep it that way.

    Straight shave twenty-two, and while I’m not ready to declare complete victory, this is getting to the point where I am regularly getting predictively good shaves. Still not quite to the point that this is the tool that I would pick up before a date night or interview, but I can at least glimpse that on the horizon now.

    Photo with the aftershave bottle twisted a bit so you can see the level to see how much I lost yesterday. The last vertical pic I had was a couple of days ago and had the level just below the top of the label, so it looks like I dumped about an inch down the drain when the restrictor fell out yesterday. The restrictor is not cracked or anything, but it is super loose and useless now. I’m not quite sure what was holding it in before, but whatever friction was there before is gone now. No idea how or why. If I hold it down with my finger, it still works, but I’m going to need to tape it down or something because there’s no way that I will remember to do that after a period of not using it.

    Straight shave twenty-four. I’ve been mostly doing two WTG passes this month, but haircut day seemed a good day to go for a closer shave. I did end up with a closer shave at the acceptable cost of a couple small weepers, but it was a good reminder that I still have a lot of practice to go before claiming victory. WTG is now comfortable and predictable, but other directions (XTG, ATG) still feel pretty awkward.

    Straight shave twenty-five and less than a week to go. Two steps forward one step back. Yesterday I said that WTG had become comfortable and predictable and today two WTG passes led to four weepers. They stopped quickly and my face is pretty smooth, so I’ll still call this a decent shave.

    Straight shave twenty-six. This was another good one. Close enough (as good as I can get with two WTG passes) and no cuts (other than the prick mentioned below) or irritation with no real feedback from the splash. I somehow pricked my bottom lip with the toe point during final cleanup, but it didn’t really even bleed so was more annoyance than anything else.

    Five shaves to go and I’m still loving this whole kit.

    Straight shave twenty-seven. Four more to go and I honestly wouldn’t mind if it was fourteen… XTG on the second pass today, and it would have been almost perfect if I hadn’t given myself a small cut above my top lip. I still don’t quite have perfect touch when making initial contact with the blade and once in a while I feel that sting that means I did it wrong… small cut that stopped quickly so no major issue, but still annoying.

    The brush seems fully broken in though is still requiring a light reload for the second pass. I’m not sure if that is the brush or the soap. I’ve tried loading longer, but that just tends to leave to more lather left on the puck ready to pick up on the second pass.

I ended up with a great shave and zero nicks or irritation which I believe is a first when going any direction other than just WTG.

    Straight shave twenty-nine and another good one. I’m really pleased with how much more comfortable I am with a straight now compared to August 1. I’m not even sure I’m ready to be done with this set up. Maybe I’ll just keep on going until I kill this tub, though I will appreciate being able to take a day off from shaving if I want. This is my first AA, but I suspect it is a lot easier when you love all your choices.

    Straight shave thirty and we’ve arrived at the penultimate corner of this marathon lap around the shaving calendar. My shave today was close to as good as I can get with a DE. Seeing as I had never used a straight before Aug 1, it really is amazing to see how well this month has progressed.

    On the brush front, today was the first day that I didn’t have to go back for a light reload for the second pass. With only one day to spare, I think we can now call this little piggy fully broken in.

    Straight shave thirty-one and this one feels like a bit of Lather Games crept into Austere August. I have to leave for the airport by 4 AM this morning, so I believe that a 3:23 AM shave may be my earliest ever. Three passes this morning to send the month off right. I’m super smooth and not bleeding, so I’ll call this victory.

    I have absolutely loved this month. I had never used a straight before Aug 1 and was honestly always a little intimidated by them, but I’d say after a month straight (see what I did there) of using one, it’s verging on becoming comfortable.

    And the brush is a dream now. Soft and finally done eating lather, so I didn’t have to reload at all.

    Alive was the first House of Mammoth soap I ever bought, and it was pleasant to spend a month with it. I never tired of it and enjoyed using it each day.

    Straight razor shave number five. No cuts or irritation though I’m still not great at my chin. I’d say DFS everywhere but my chin which is more in the socially acceptable range.

    The brush seemed less lather hungry today. Still no split tips. Seems to be losing about one hair per shave.
