    Mar 7, 2024 - MM24 4th Match-Up: DG vs. ZM

    DG and ZM both have great bases, with ZM slightly leading with the extra skincare ingredients. Both collaborate with incredible perfumers, and they both create excellent scents of their own.

    The shave today really came down to Yuzu or Oud. I had laid out DG's Y/R/P and ZM's Amir to decide which one to use. Both prominently feature beautiful Rose and Patchouli scents, so it was the darker Oud that hit me just right this morning.

    This match-up was a really tough choice.

    Lace up your Jordan's and make sure you hydrate well. I think this one is going to come down to the wire here at Wetshaving Arena. I'm definitely on Team Declaration Grooming for this battle. Milksteak has rocketed to the top of my list of favorite bases. I was thinking about using Cerberus today, but it is raining like cats and dogs here this morning so I figured I'd go more floral because March showers are going to bring April flowers at this rate.

    The Orbit isn't playing well with the morning coffee in my nose, but whatever. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

    This one was a tough one for me. The Master is my favorite barber shop scent. But its hard to beat HOM and their variety of scent and of course the base makes a great lathe. And the splash is very soothing. Although the splash is actually Noble Otter? Sticking with the Wolf Whiskers brush for the madness. Really liking the badger. Great splay.

    Pulling out all the stops for today’s underdog.

    In the first two shaves an average of 69.5 shaves were recorded in total for both competitors. ~~Yesterday~~ On Tuesday 67 shavers–just 2.5 under the average total for the past two shaves–came out against the loser’s meager 16. Tell me there was no funny business after the past apparent successes of Tabac.

    I’m not bitter. Just surprised.

    Precision Load; Face Lather; WTG/ATG/Cleanup Passes; BBSS Result; 5th Consecutive / 279th Overall SOTD Post

    I made adjustments to my precision loading technique to factor in how the v20 gel tips hog water, and I was able to overcome the overhydrating issue I've been dealing with. The lather quality was great, and the lather scent was even better. My sus nose would have difficulty telling the difference between juniper and jackfruit, but it knows what it likes, and it likes Hygge. With its second use, the GEM calmed down and delivered a smooth and efficient shave. Oh, what a difference a day makes. Happy shaving and have a wonderful day.

    I don't have a lot of DG or Zingari represented in my shaving soap arsenal - just a few samples of each. So I'm going with the underdog today because Heather makes my absolute favorite post shave balm. I use Zingari's post shave balm pretty much daily. I know this is a competition about soaps, but in a toss up like this, I'm stick with the one who has the product line I use the most.

    Declaration Grooming was an easy choice for this one. Milksteak is darn good and Icarus is still great all these years later (I prefer it to its successor). More importantly, DG has Chatillon Lux going collaborations going for it. Few DG originals have worked for me—our noses don't align—but CL stuff like Gratiot League Square more than make up for the misses. Can we get tubs without the overhanging lid, tho'?

    Z-Man makes a terrific shave soap, but their scents have rarely stood out for me, and I'm still hung up on the name. It's a "now that I know this I can't un-know it" situation and I find myself hesitant to include it in a SOTD post. Still, excellent performance, and a recurring Lather Games sponsor. (Don't have any solutions here—sorry.)

    Well this is a bit awkward, I used DG soap and Zingari balm... I don't actually have any ZM soap, aside for some samples. But I have a ton of her balm, and a few bars of bath soap. They hit the sweet spot for me more than the soap. Cerberus is in WSDB as “House of Mammoth” which I think is fairly accurate as a scent (oddly the splash is here as DG). Nevertheless, we’re counting soap makers. So I made a tweak. Hopefully u/ShavinginCT can account for anyone who forgets.

    I think DG kills it today because of Cerberus, but lookign at the post so far I'm not sure actually. I own a trifecta, it’s pushing the edges of my Stonk, but I use it because it’s oddly appealing in in that way. The soap, splash and frag all accent differnet elments too, which is fun. Granted my wife is not really a fan, but she’s also out of town and won’t be back until tonight when it’s mostly going to be worn off.

    Prepare yourself for a hot take - both of these brands aren't really my cup of tea. Scott just isn't my type of guy, and then there's the whole "You named your brand after a marginalized people", which I honestly can't really take sides on. Sure, it's bad to say "I got gypped", but Heather never said that. On the other hand, I've seen other well-liked artisans call things retarded without being publicly reprimanded for it.

    I tried to use other brands that are named or themed after groups/places with some history of being marginalized. Mammoths were hunted to extinction, and Stirling Soap Co. is named after a place in Scotland. I could have also used Southern Witchcrafts but I had to draw the line somewhere!

    For the record, I'm neither here nor there about the Zingari branding, although sometimes there are certain soaps that make me scratch my head. I know Heather isn't referring to slave owners, but maybe don't use "Master" if your brand is already under scrutiny by a big group of wetshaving gatekeepers.

    I remembered that this set is super stronk. In fact, I feel like I avoid using it as much as I would otherwise because of that fact. But the Zingari balm is among the best, and the soap is no slouch either.

    The strength isn't as bad as I remembered, though I did take care to spray and walk through the extrait rather than spray it right on. I do remember smelling it in my office and car for days afterwards the last time I directly applied it.

    I went with a trifecta of DG today. Chaotic Neutral is an interesting fragrance. I get a fruity scent off it even without a fruit scent in it. There is a lot going on here.
