    Austere August 2023

    • Brush: >!REDACTED!<
    • Razor: Munnin Woodworks Forest Moss Sextoblade
    • Blade: Kismet (7)
    • Lather: MdC Vetyver Brain Bowl (Day 103)
    • Post: CB V splash

I raised the loft by about 1mm and it made a wonderful difference. It allowed the knot to loosen up, so it wasn't holding as much water and allowed for an easier painting stroke.

Starting off the week right with another good shave with this stuff. The Sextoblade is my most used razor. And I have a lot of razors to choose from. It took me several shaves to get the hang of it, but now it's second nature. I've got over 500 shaves with it so I guess I better be comfortable with it. And the brush has over 100 shaves on it. I suppose I could/should have picked some stuff that I don't have much experience with to use this month. Maybe I'll do that next year.

    Dear u/PrideTwo

As the battle rages on in this MonthOfWeckenoning, I opted for an evening shave yesterday, resulting in minimal growth to tackle this morning.

In the realm of the Razor and Blade, I continued to experiment with my technique. Departing from my typical North to South and South to North two-pass shave, I tried something new today. For the first pass, I went North to South, and on the second pass, I shaved from the ears toward the nose. My throat received the customary South to North treatment. This approach resulted in a very good shave and allowed me to better understand the proper arm and hand positions for an effective shave.

Regarding my faithful Omega Pro48 brush, I am so impressed with its performance that I am considering purchasing another one once Austere August concludes. Additionally, I have my eyes on acquiring another 26 x 60mm boar brush, likely from Zenith, to add to my shaving arsenal.

In the realm of soap and lather, I have finally mastered the art of reliably lathering the Barrister and Mann Omnibus base soap. My nose seems to have become blind to the scent of #WAR, and I can't help but consider it a blessing amidst this intense battle.

As the seventh day comes to a close, I feel a growing sense of accomplishment in my shaving journey. Each day presents new opportunities to refine my technique and explore the potential of my shaving tools. Until tomorrow, my journal, I shall continue to strive for excellence and emerge victorious in this challenging #WAR.

    -- As Always...

    Thank you, I hate you...

    Sincerely u/Absenth

The Seventh Day Of Weckoning is upon us

    • Brush: Rubberset 400-3 with a 26 mm unbleached Zenith boar knot at 56 mm loft
    • Razor: Weck Sextoblade Med Prep
    • Blade: Kismet Rostfrei, Polymer beschichtet (13)
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Oceana
    • Post Shave: Ralon – Original
    • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co. – Island Man

Nice morning shave, three passes, no complaints.

After the shave, I was lying at the beach and looking at the fallout of LG Never Skip Leg Day (safe, but weird for work.), and I had to chuckle thinking of all the Lather Gladiators with the same predicament 😅

Kismet Blade - Losing My Edge
    #Monthofweckoning

This setup is not getting old. I'm getting consistent BBS shaves very quickly. Faster, I think, than with a DE or SE razor. I'm not sure why this is, but I have the rest of the month to ponder it.

The SV Beta 4.3 base is really forgiving. I threw way too much hydration into it today and it held up beautifully, though I had lather blurbs everywhere so cleanup took a little longer than usual. The lather is always slick, even with minimal hydration, but I have yet to use it in an undeveloped state.

The blade edge has 8 small areas of wear and the edge, overall, it isn't quite as crisp looking as it was on day one. It's fuzzier and harder to find focus on. I've added an image of wear near the toe. Again, be aware these are tiny (1 micron or less). Too small for us humans to notice. I do think that the edge is rounding, though, and that's why it appears fuzzier. I'm betting that I start to notice less sharpness around day 20 or so.

    • Fragrance: House of Mammoth - Sonder

Made it through the first week and things are looking good for being able to make it through this month with the Weck! When I first signed up I was worried about my ability to get a close enough shave but I’ve done better than I was expecting!

Todays passes: cheeks WTG/XTG/ATG; chin & neck: WTG/XTG produced a fairly clean shave! I was going to try a ATG pass on my chin but the WoodStock woke up from his nap and cut my shaving time short.

One week of using this soap and have used 7g total Which conveniently averages out to 1g per shave!

I saw u/jwoods32 post that he's had good luck with the pinch grip near his chin, which has been my trouble area. Still managed a little nick on my chin, but the shave seems much easier with the pinch than the standard grip near my chin. I'll be exploring that over the next few days.

In other news, I keep having packages arrive at my house that I am unable to use unless I want to engage in a second luxury shave. That SLS is getting more and more tempting.

Very comfortable WTG and XTG on my neck. XTG on my chin and under my nose remains a challenge, but I take it slow and I’m a whole lot better now than I was a week ago. #Monthofweckoning #RawHoggin #unscented

Pic of SOC before shave 7

The brush continues to get more split ends, but a couple bristles broke off tonight. Overall it has shed less than many new brushes I’ve tried. That cherry handle feels really good in the hand. The finish is sort of satin and while smooth, isn’t slippery. I’m quite pleased with the brush so far. It isn’t breaking in as fast as my Zeniths, but another 20 plus shaves hopefully will get it softening up nicely. I didn’t get as nice a lather tonight. I should have tried to load more soap than I did. I didn’t shake out as much water after soaking the brush, and it just didn’t seem to take up the soap as much. No blood again, but my neck really fought me tonight. Tried adjusting my grip more. It worked better going up, but the downward pass kept catching the edge. I am stunned I didn’t cut up my neck. Now the splash burned a lot, and not very close there, but my face I could probably get bbs with another xtg pass. I didn’t get to enjoy the Sonder much. My sinuses are a bit stuffy today, so not picking up much.

    • Razor: Marianna #310 Hair Shaper
    • Blade: Personna Hair Shaper (7)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth – Dammusi
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth – Dammusi

Well boys and girls, we made it. One week of this foolishness and only 3.5 to go. We got this.

Smooth first pass on the sideburns, upper neck, and cheeks tonight. It didn’t all fall apart after that, but, there’s a reason I shave at night and not in the mornings during August – I’d rather not go to work every morning with the inevitable razor burn and nicks all over my neck. It is improving, but, I feel a bit lost on my neck. I can really only go straight down my neck and straight up it – anything horizontal is just not happening. It’s fine but it leaves me with a pseudo with the grain/across the grain first pass and then an against the grain/across the grain second pass. It’s weird and challenging and maybe I should watch some more people shave their necks but who has time for that these days.

Dundy 1 and 2 was great as usual and Dammusi continues to excel.

Overall from where I was a week ago when I first started this I’m at least happy with some progress happening. Hopefully there’s no plateau and they continue to get better.

If this is the monthly baseline I’ll feel ok the rest of the month. I think the number one thing I’ve changed so far in this first week, that I notice I changed, is starting to wear my glasses for the neck. That has helped a lot.

AA Miles: 39 miles. Holy shit it was so fucking hot today. I went out at 7pm and it was still 100 degrees with a 106 heat index. Time to start figuring out how to ride before work instead of at night.

    Days of disapproval: 2

Day 7 - I really got nothing after this shave. One week down thank goodness, but this month is certainly going to drag along like this. I forgot my daily progress picture for my brush album so that's cool. It'll bother me the rest of the month that I'm one image short. Blade still felt okay for the most part this evening, but didn't feel like chasing anything more than the required 2 passes tonight.
