01-08 An easy-going month with Mammoth

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Purple Haze' w/ 24mm Mew Brown knot
    • Razor: 1953-54 Gillette 'Aristocrat Junior'
    • Blade: Gillette Nacet (1)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Balm
    • Fragrance: Proraso - Wood and Spice - Cologne

Hi, hello, how are you. It's been a while, hasn't it?

My last SOTD post here, let's see, was on… 30 November, 2022. Huh. Well, I suppose some apologies are in order. You see, there was that whole issue with the rabid bear, having to save the world over the weekend and– okay, let's cut the shit. I've been absent, and for that I am truly sorry. Life got in the way, I fell behind, and soon enough I didn't think I could hack it with the cool kids anymore. Another reason was probably the fact I settled into a nice daily driver, pared my soap rotation down to just a dozen tubs, and all in all stopped experimenting, buying or advancing in the hobby. I found what I liked, and that was that.

Now, that's not really a great excuse, but it's what I got. I've been thinking/planning to come back, but always forgot or put it off for some reason, and after I missed this year's Lather Games (I mean, why hold them in the dead of our winter, sheesh - don't you know Australia is the centre of the universe?) all hope seemed lost. But u/MrTangerinesky called me back with the allure of Austere August, and I dutifully dragged my sorry ass back for a month of daily posting.

With the lengthy preamble out of the way, let's get into the how and why.

I'm doing two challenges this AA, and they are Mammoth Month by u/InfernalInternal / u/LaTuskFamilia, and the Unchallenging Challenge by Old Spice connoisseur u/cowzilla3. How did I manage to do both, when the latter's rules clearly states I can't? What can I say, I'm a sweet-talker…and already made an attempt on Cowzilla's life in the past, so we have history.

Suppose I better explain myself, then?

Let's just clear my sink-side shave station real quick…

    And there we go.

So, the non-challenge. Cowzilla urges us to use our "easiest-to-use set of products" and I agonised a bit over what that would entail. However, I quickly pieced together what would be my most uninvolved, no-issues, comfiest shave experience, and you bet your ass it involves House of Mammoth. u/mammothben has put together something truly special with the Tusk base. It lathers like a dream. It doesn't condemn you to the deepest circle of hell for using too little water, or too much, or for swirling your brush the wrong way. It has a divine level of slickness and leaves your face feeling tip-top. And the smells - oh, the smells. Mood Indigo (it's just Indigo, nowadays) is like a comfy blanket for the face. It's a night drive from the city to the countryside and back, it's at once mysterious and familiar, it's just damn good. Same goes for the balm. I've had this set since my very earliest days in the hobby - in fact, Mood Indigo was my first-ever Bazaar purchase, I think - and I don't think I'll ever let it slip out of the rotation. Plain and simple, it was a no-brainer choice for the 'unchallenge'.

On to the hardware: I've got a few razors in my collection, many of which I've got a fair bit of experience with. There's my daily driver, the Karve Christopher Bradley with the OC F plate, but that thing bites more than the aforementioned rabid bear I had to fight last Spring. There's my previous daily, the Fatip Lo Storto Originale (the 🦊). There's a bunch of others that are great, but not what I'd call fuss-free or easiest-to-use. But then there's the Aristocrat Junior. These things are a pain in the ass to date (just check Mr Razor's website), but rest assured it gives the most easiestest shave I've got on offer. It's TTO - of course, because who wants to fiddle with three pieces and a blade while covered in soap? That's not very easy-mode. It's mild - of course, because who wants to get nipped while enjoying the luxury of a Mood Indigo shave? It's just all around a great little unit, and if I think about it too much more I'm going to sell the rest of my gear and marry this Aristocrat Junior, so let's leave it at that.

When it came to a brush to use for this whole month, I couldn't not use a Yaqi Mew Brown knot. They're the epitome of easy - cheap, so easy to replace; synthetic, so foolproof, smell-free and soft as a pillow; and…uh…the brush fits the colour scheme of Mood Indigo? I don't know, things don't always have to come in threes. I just couldn't look past this one for my easy-mode setup. It's no wonder this thing is my travel brush and comfort pick.

Blade: It's a Nacet. Accessible, wicked sharp, never had a bad one, it's easy-mode. Nuff said.

Frag: I wanted something I don't mind using every day, and Proraso's Wood and Spice cologne is just that. I do legitimately wear it 4 out of 5 days, because the flask is $50 so I can afford an extra spritz without breaking the bank. It doesn't last as long as your designer scents, but who cares when you can re-up for less than a penny? Easiestest pick here.

And, uh, I think that's it? Let me know if I've forgotten anything, judge overlords. I hope I made my case clear for why I think this is my easy-mode setup.

A few more things for housekeeping: I'm going to be doing this AA in Nightmare Mode, in line with the Mammoth challenge, but I hardly ever change my blades anyway, so I don't think this'll be a massive issue. For proof, here's a video of me unwrapping the new Nacet blade...well, trying to. It had to be a two-parter before I stitched it together in post, and even then I nearly sliced myself open in the process. Opening up a new blade pouch is hard with just one hand!

Lastly, here's some hashtags needed for the bots to do their botting: #UNCHALLENGE #MammothMafia23

It's good to be back, folks. Keen to see how you've all been doing.

    August 1, 2023 - Austere August Day 1

    • Prep: House of Mammoth Embrace Doppio Bath Soap
    • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts 24mm 2-Band
    • Razor: Charcoal Goods LVL II SS (Gen 2) on Triad Aristocrat SS handle
    • Blade: Personna 74 (47)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Sonder - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Sonder - Aftershave
    • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann - Waves - Eau de Cologne

    Day One. A Sonder Redeux

    What's different?
Year 3. For 2021, I used a Dogwood 26mm Maggard B&W, an MMOC, and Mood Indigo. For 2022, I used the same Dogwood with a 26mm Zenith unbleached boar, the MMOC, and Sonder. This year, I decided I wanted to use a badger. I also wanted to start with a used blade because we all know 31 has been done. Amirite?

    Teh Tusk:
I estimate the remaining soap in this tub to be around 29g. This was the tub I bought .after completing Mammoth Month in 2021, and I used it for AA of 2022. These are its last legs. My previous Tusk use measurements were with a synthetic and a boar, so time will tell if I make it to the 31st.

    Teh Razor:
No Weck?! Yeah, no. I love my Sextoblade, but no. I decided to use a DE for the first time and opted for my Charcoal Goods. It's a Gen 2 Stainless LVL II with the ver 4 top cap on a Triad Aristocrat handle. I was very close to just going vintage, but this won out last night.

    Teh Blade:
This P74 has been going for 46 shaves prior to the start of the month. No real worries about it for the foreseeable future, but I've never taken a blade this far that I can recall. Here's to making it to 77!

Teh Brush: Going badger with 29g of soap left is a possible issue. I only used 30g braking in a new unbleached boar, so it's doable, but I will have to avoid overloading. I decided to use the Dogwood 24mm 2band I recently won from Phteven_j's PIF. It's smaller, less dense, but still a great brush I will enjoy looking at for a month. I will miss not using the Mire brush i used the last two years, but there was no way I was going to pull that Zenith... Just too good.

Anyways, that's my breakdown of monotony for the month. Good luck to all the players! From the looks of it, some of you are going to need it...

    • Razor: Weck Sextoblade

    • Blade: Kismet Hair Shaper

Tagging u/EldrormR u/Djundjila & u/Semaj3000 for my first day of the #MonthOfWeckoning WTG XTG passes could’ve gone better. I got a tiny cut on the top of my lip trying to get under my nose. I would just grow a stache but my wife would kick me out of our bed…sorry not that dedicated to the cause!

u/LaTuskFamilia I am working to advance my place in the #MammothMafia23 I let my family choose my scent this year and I’m super excited to get to use Dammusi all month long! I don’t have a full bottle of the Frag so Sonder it is! I kinda feel like a dumbass this morning because I didn’t realize the Sonder balm had a cooling agent in it until I put it on! I knew about the splash but it doesn’t say anything about that on the product page, just the ingredients. Not upset about that just taken by surprise a bit.

Third and final tag for the month, #RawHoggin because I can’t just take it easy this month and have to take on three challenges at once! This is a new Maggard Boar knot that I set in a SBS handle last night. I had temporarily set a G5C in this handle and replaced it for this month! Thanks u/EldrormR for hosting this side challenge again! I skipped out on this last year and regretted it. We’ll see how I feel about that at the end of the month!

One of two things is going to happen. I'm either going to get better at this thing in short order, or I'm going to get out an MMOC and have an enjoyable August and give up the sweet, sweet Weckonista flair. The shave was bad enough that Osma was pulled out to stop some of my bleeding. The Osma quickly informed me that I am terrible at this.

Just in time u/InfernalInternal 's Gem MMOC arrived today, so I can be the only one who earns the MMOC whisperer (if I make it through august alive). That brings me right to my SOTD.
Because I heard so often "more soap, more water", I tried to use more and more water with each pass. Mammoth soaps works well with all 3 water levels I used. Did anybody question that? I hope not. But with the most water, the lather was in fact the best for the MMOC.
Unfortunately, I am a noob with the razor, had over a full day of beard growth and wanted to be super clean shaven. Blood. There was some of it. I am in doubt if the blade will last the full 30 days, but I am not here to give up. I know that I should hold the razor pretty flat to my face, which felt unneccesary (says the guy with blood around his mouth).
In the end, I got a very close shave.
The razor looks beautifull. It's well polished and I am fascinated by the mechanism to open it (took me a minute to understand).

Why did I choose that brush? Because I like the color and it matches the mood indigo best, without being too big and soap hungry. Also I believe that with a synth brush, I have to worry very little about getting it dry on time for the next shave.

Rambler and Sonder. I wanted to prove to my GF that August can also be a nice month. Long gone are the days of the stag. Lets enjoy the summer with these awesome scents. I hope we will get more sunny days for Sonder.

One shave down and 30 to go. Two passes wtg and xtg took longer than I would for three with a de. Good news, I survived with just a little blood loss. A small nick at the base of my throat is all I did for damage. I will say the cheeks are 10x easier to shave than the neck. My left hand was the shakier one, but the nick was with my right hand. Hopefully I will settle down soon. Noise is about the same as an MMOC, but the shave was closer on my face than a two pass GEM shave would get me. I might watch some more videos and practice more with the dulled razor u/gcgallant sent me to try and get blood free experience. I did several practices with it in the last week, but I still felt so awkward. Having a blade than can bite increases the nerves. Also thanks to gc for the Kismet blade.

The brush I picked for this month was going to be my AA Raw Hoggin brush last year, but then I saw the copper handled Zeniths and got a bad case of the I wants. I left it sealed in box until today. Pics of my set, brush unboxing, and brush after 1 shave. I didn’t do a long soak of the brush, just put the brush in a small cup half filled with water while I set up. 2-3 minutes later, I started loading the brush. As soon as I could see the brush had picked up soap, to the face I went. I didn’t waste the water from the brief presoak; it was used to hydrate the lather. It took several dips to bring enough water to the paste on my face and get a pretty thick lather. Still was thicker than I’d have liked. More water for the second pass, but still was a little thick, but better. If I’d have gone for a third pass, maybe I’d have dialed it in.

My lather/post shave choice of Sonder will be a bit different than my Alive August last year. Both are great scents, and if I repeated Alive, I wouldn’t be disappointed. I decided Sonder about a week ago, and I think I am going to enjoy it. Sonder to me smells like a lemon creme sandwich cookie. If this year is like last, that impression will evolve over the month. I will go look at the scent notes again in a day or two, but for now just trying to see what I can get without any prompting. As it becomes increasingly familiar, I think more nuances will come out for me.

Went with a rainbow theme, once I had software and the lovely Moar Boar picked seemed fitting to add colors on either end.

No strong opinions on Dammusi yet. Sonder and Smash are both excellent. Not sure picking up with an older AA blade from 2 years ago was a great call, so we’ll see. I’ll have to double check but think even for #MammothMafia23 I can swap that if I need to. u/LaTuskFamilia.

Pretty sure my MOAR BOAR might have a couple more shaves than listed, but here’s that album.

    August 1, 2023 – Austere August Day 1

    • Brush: Summer Break Soaps “Dundy” Maggard Boar 26mm
    • Razor: Marianna #310 Hair Shaper
    • Blade: Personna Hair Shaper (1)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth – Dammusi
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth – Dammusi

Day one with the hair shaper – better and worse than expected. I got a closer/cleaner shave than I thought I would and I didn’t cut myself that much. I did not really enjoy the shave, nor am I good at it. Like, at all. But, I remind myself throughout the shave – everyone struggles when they start learning something. They only way to get better is to do something over and over. And, there are only 30 more shaves to go, so, I got this. Plus, u/OnionMiasma hooked me up with this pretty little Marianna and I can’t take his gift for granted – gotta keep on keeping on. Slid a nice little Personna Hair Shaper in there and hopefully it gets better and better, not worse and worse.

I went with a with the grain first pass followed by a hybrid across and against the grain second pass with some minor buffing to get acceptably smooth. The boar pic 1 pic 2 pic 3 was scratchy and unbroken in but overall pleasant. It’s lofted very high (I don’t have a calipers to say exactly how high) and I like it. Good splay, good scritch, whipped up a stellar lather. I suspect this thing will break in beautifully and be a knot I keep around.

What did I learn from this shave? That I need to go slow, but not too slow; too slow means snags. That the blade angle can be a bit wider than I thought. That I need to pay very close attention as I situate the razor so I don’t slice myself – no whipping it around like I do with my DE to get it in position. And, that it’s going to be more difficult than I initially thought. Hopefully I’ll come to enjoy the process – I vaguely remember my first several weeks of shaves with a DE being very difficult as well, so, all in due time. I’ll keep updating with each shave at least one thing I learned – hopefully writing it down helps it stick.

As for Dammusi, well, I’m a believer! I got a smoosh from u/jwoods23 (I think) and I didn’t love it, but, if I’m going to upgrade my Mammoth Mafia status I needed something and I did Sonder last year and no other scent grabbed my attention so I went in with the expectation that the splash would be the scent that everyone was raving about and man am I glad I did. It’s wonderfully complex and u/mammothben crushed this release. I’m glad I didn’t pick it up on release so I can now use it for a month straight – as it sits here drying down it just gets better and better. I look forward to unpacking it.

Anyway – good luck, all. May your learning curve be quick and your shaves become bloodless.

    August 1, AA 2023

    • Brush: Semogue 2000
    • Razor: Blackland Blackbird Ti
    • Blade: Personna Lab Blue (1)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Sonder
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth – Sonder splash

    Use Progression: Unboxing, New, 1

First time trying a brush other than badger, and I’m struggling. The boar brush didn’t seem to pick up much of the soap from the tub and was significantly harder to use. Hopefully over the course of the month it will break in a little and provide a better experience. Otherwise, it was nice to be using Sonder for another AA.

    August 1, 2023

    • Brush: Zenith 31mm MOAR BOAR
    • Razor: Weck Sextoblade
    • Blade: Personna Hair Shaper (1)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth – Sonder
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth – Sonder

Trying out this Weck thing. Ordered some Kismets from r/wetshaving’s local hobby enabler, but they didn’t show up on time (even though he sent them 2 weeks ago, stupid postal service is killing me). So I’m using this Personna all month, and guys, this thing fucking SUCKS. It just skips all over my face. A+ lather for my vector and this thing just doesn’t work. Worst shave of my life. Definitely the most alcohol splash has ever hurt my face after a shave. I think I’m going to have to switch to bowl lathering to really crank the water to see if that’ll add slickness. If anything makes me give up it’ll be this blade. The two passes I’m doing for now are just a North-South and then a South-North, it’s really all my hands can figure out right now.

Gonna keep doing my bike riding thing from LG in case anyone wants to follow. I’ll update Mileage here as the month progresses. AA Mileage: 5 miles.
