    That ended up being a fantastic shave, though it wasn't without it's drama.

    Yesterday's was a decent one, but I realised there was a couple of spots on the blade that could perhaps do with a once over. So I got the stone out to give it a quick go around, and somehow, absolutely no idea how, but I dropped the razor and went on complete instinct. Dashed down to grab it and it managed to turn, got it by the handle but the blade crashed down on my thumb. It was clearly going down with significantly more force than I thought as that smile on my nail extends from one edge almost to the other. After the clear up, staunch the blood and a bit of superglue and plasters (band-aids?) I managed to seal myself up.

    I got the loupe out to inspect, fortunately there wasn't any major damage (there appeared to be an ever so slight fold), but I wasn't convinced a refresh would do it so dropped down a few grits. I played it cautiously and got the 5k, 8k and 12k out (packing peanuts at the ready). Went to work, I've found circular motions seem to work well, so did that on the 5k before shifting up the grits. Moved through them, finishing on the 12k this time rather than the slate. Packing peanut test went without a hitch all along the blade.

    Came to today's shave and I swear it is better than when I started. Could almost have finished after one pass. So though this one involved blood, sweat and some expletives it was the best yet.

    I am officially nose blind to the soap as of today. Fortunately, I can smell the splash and this scent is now officially one of my favorites.

    I've got a sick kid at home today , so it was a quick 2 pass shave and a half-assed picture. Even rushed this morning, I had no cuts and no irritation. I can definitely say that Austere August has helped me improve my technique quite a bit.

    2/3 through now I’m getting a bit closer. Still haven’t matched my best efforts with a DE razor. I tried a third pass again tonight. That was pushing it a bit, but also helped get close to a damn fine shave. I still really like Sonder, and I have another jar after I finish this one. A ring of death is starting to appear. Maybe a nickel sized spot in the middle has a bare smear of soap. I’ve been contemplating what could work well with Sonder. Depending on how newly applied it is, I go from a lemon creme cookie, to a more sweet sandalwood as the lemon fades. I’m trying to think of how to play up the sandalwood more.

    The brush is starting to feel a softer. I think the taller loft now is what is keeping it from being easier to splay. Still, much better than the first week. Still slower to break in than my two previous Zeniths. I’d say good progress though. Lots of split bristles now all over.

    Using a straight each and every day is a bit much. I mean I definitely feel much more competent with a straight than I did prior to starting this month. But, ya know a nice easy shave with a safety razor would kinda feel good about now.

    I officially (I think) quit marching band. As for the shave, I experimented with loading more soap for an extra 10-15 seconds. The result was a thick lather that took a longer time to hydrate, and the lather got everywhere and there was a bunch of leftover. I will continue the experiment tomorrow with a few variables changed but today I say it isn't worth it.

    Now that I've broken Nightmare mode, I'm going to keep using this setup for the rest of the month. But, I'm not bothering to shave every day. I shaved three days growth. It was a bit of a chore. The Henson seemingly never causes irritation. But, it's not very efficient. During the first pass WTG, I had to go over spots multiple times to get a clean pass. I had to rinse frequently. The shaves aren't very close either. I typically shave every other day and feel like I still look presentable on the second day. My beard is more visible the next day after shaving with this razor.
