    • Brush: Muhle Rhytmo Badger #WEDONTNEEDNOSTINKINGBADGERS
    • Razor: Henkotsu Kamisori #KAMISORI
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Fougère Angelique
    • Post Shave: Barts Balm - Ben Nevis

One of my early day brushes, given to me by my wife as a christmas present as part of a set…I suppose I could pass the blame on to her for getting me started down the rabbit warren!  The knot isn’t anything special, and it has a backbone like a willow but it serves its purpose and I couldn't get rid of it.

I’ve only tried this Kamisori a couple of times, I’m still not completely sold on it and much prefer my standard straights and western grind. It doesn't help that I've really struggled to put a proper edge on it, it does the job but it's not quite there.

I absolutely love this Angelique soap though, picked it up from Maggards a good while ago.  Just a shame that I can’t get my hands on the splash to go along with it.  If I’m ever in the states again I may have to place an order to a hotel in the hopes I can bring it back with me.  I don’t have much in the way of software to complement Angelique, my other fougeres just don't seem to go so I usually throw on Thayers Lemon but decided to slap on Barts Ben Nevis instead, I guessed ahead of time this wasn't going to be the smoothest with the kami.

I've garnered some useful information from the DQ thread in the past, I think as you say /u/Crisp_Mango, today is not that day, I almost put a disclaimer for people looking for genuine advice. Though there are instances where the advice tries to be helpful, though reading through the alt comments now from Friday I've taken some helpful info away myself.

Not daily question related but thank you again for the education that imgur images can be hidden in free talk Friday. After switching all of my pics over I thought they needed to be public, after being swiftly downvoted by the general public…philistines…I hid them again. Though one kind individual did ask whether I liked whisky and if so to try lapsang souchong in response to my 'I don't like tea' pic, weird but oddly kind.

Hope everyone has a good kick off to the weekend.

    Cheers

    Marc

Always had great experiences with Maggard Razors, and this is my first time trying the DG Convergence, a really nice scent. I wanted to make the rest of the shave as Maggard as possible, so I went with a SOC Boar brush I purchased from them. Also trying a Feather DX for the first time, with Proguard blades which I purchased from them. I must say, the Proguard blade is amazing, it's somehow sharp and gentle at the same time!

For DQ appreciation day, I've answered a question here. Haven't had to ask as much in the DQ threads as usual due to getting great info from the Discord group. Until tomorrow!

    • Lather: Maggard Razors - Tobacco & Leather
    • Post Shave: Wholly Kaw - Timmermann Red Label Splash

First and foremost let me say how strong this soap scent is!! IT’S STRONG! I open my sample and the whole bathroom smells like I just lit an old tobacco pipe. Superb. What better way to complement it than WK Timm Red which is not as strong but a more mellow scent of tobacco. All good things for a Saturday morning.

u/priusaurus had a very deep thought provoking thread in the DQ that I got involved!

July 8, 2023 – Buttering toast for the first time

    • Brush: Maggard Synthetic
    • Razor: EldrormR Industries MM24 #brassing
    • Blade: GEM (1)
    • Lather: Maggard Razors – Lilac
    • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. – Bergamot Lavender
    • Fragrance: Chatillon Lux – La Petite Prairie

Today I used the MM24. And tied that directly into my DQ thread question.

So no not a shit post but nicely tied together.

I want to thank u/EldrormR for the opportunity to grab that MM24 before he went public with it. It’s a beautiful unique razor. This one in particular because the plating was in such bad shape he removed it from the lid creating a two tone top. His picture is better than mine. I hope he won’t mind if I use it.

The shave was not my best but no worse than the first shave with the Parker or the kamisori. I titled a little too much in several places, nicked my chin 3x and mole once. But nothing serious, a little stypic and fixed. Some feedback on the balm and I feel a bit raw but I’ll get better and probably pretty quick if today’s start was any indication.

On to #fof. Now you’re thinking “wait wouldn’t Le petite prairie made more sense with wild flowers?” No. And let me tell you why. Because my grandparents and mom lived off a street aptly named “Lilac Road.” it’s the second to last Missouri exit on the bypass. They weren’t directly off it but that’s how we got there. Once it was a large farm but by the time I was born and we’d visit (most notably for the large annual family reunions that occurred outside) most of the land was unfarmed and while not quite fully restored prairie, pretty damn close. I used the bergamot Lavender to bridge these two scent profiles and I think I did pretty well. A trip down memory lane. I appreciate Shawn’s recreation of the prairies that became south stl, because I’ve stood in the ones that remained just 15 miles or so away. (that area won’t be developed so they’ll stay there for a while I’d bet).

Hard to tie today’s #photocontest to the challenge as I have been, so I turned my kids lose and this extinct animal is the result. The giant dinosaur may as well be alive with it’s roaring sound. You can see my daughter’s arm holding it up as she tries to get the perfect shot for me. #ROTY

I want to close by just giving my appreciation for Maggards. This hobby revolves around small businesses and Maggards is one of the best. Yes I try to buy from the artisans directly when I can. My sister also has a small business (a clothing boutique in Chicago) so I’m aware of wholesale problems, profit margin, inventory costs, etc. But artisans can’t sell everything and sometimes you need a broad variety of things and it’s more cost effective go get it all at one place. I’ve had to exchange emails with Brad over a few tiny order issues (one my mistake and one the stock counter) and he’s always been awesome. They ship faster than imaginable. There’s a reason they’ve managed to get the most of my shaving spending (though u/Mammothben is trying to overtake them, and he doesn’t sell much in the name of hardware, so that’s impressive.) Today’s shave used as much Maggards stuff as I could. Brush soap, that bottle of bergamot Lavender didn’t come from them but it’s almost empty and the replacement did. They were my first stop to prep for lather games and where I send my wife to get me gifts. Yes I gave away some of my sample to others did this which cost them a sale or too, but I also have spent enough there to offset that several times over. Thanks Maggards!

    • Lather: Maggard Razors - Mango Sage Tea

    • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Thé Noir et Vanille

    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - O, Unknown!

Today's Theme: Small Business Saturday... but in July - Used the Maggard Mango Sage Tea soap, and it's a pretty delightful scent. Mango and Tea off the puck, sage heavy when lathered. Very easy to lather up, good amount of structure and whips up pretty quickly.

Today's Challenge: DQT Appreciation Day - DAE PAA BAD? Also neck picture!

My theme for today's shave: Tea

Yes, I know, tomorrow could have been tea day, but it won't be so boohoo to me for making my LG calendar more complicated than it needs to be. For today's shave I decided to have a Tea-themed shave. The Maggard Mango Sage Tea is pretty light on the tea, off the puck it gives mango milk tea boba drink vibes, but loses most of the tea once it's lathered up. Noble Otter's Thé Noir et Vanille reminds me most of a strawberry herbal black tea - the kind that has dried fruit and black tea leaves mixed together - with a hint of rose petal on the finish, and I could see it being a very fancy herbal tea finished with rosehips. Wonderful scent. And finally, Imaginary Authors' O' Unknown! is the most tea-forward scent of the bunch. It's pretty much straight up strong black tea and I quite like it.

For music, I picked Skeletons in the Closet by Gamma Ray. Absolute banger live album, and Kai Hansen's voice + guitars really shine. Incredible energy from the band and the audience comes through in the recording. What does it have to do with tea? Nothing really, it's just a great album. Could I have picked a british metal band to at least pretend like there's a link to tea? Sure but you're not my real dad. Dale. Can't tell me what to do. #photocontest #FOF #ROTY

    July 8, 2023 – Thanks Maggard!

    • Brush: Maggard Synthetic
    • Razor: Gillette Guard
    • Lather: Maggard Razors – Limes & Bergamot
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth – Dammusi

Like many others on here and because of here I started on my wetshaving journey with the starter kit from Maggard, V3 head, and Limes and Bergamot soap. And look at me now competitively shaving on a daily basis for a full month. It’s been almost on the nose 15 months since I placed that first order and I truly am grateful for how they’ve helped turn a frustrating chore into a beautiful ritual that has truly increased my quality of life.

The maggard brush has been relegated to my travel brush, but I have to say it really could be the only brush you need, especially with the smushes I’ve packed, it makes easy work of them and builds a quick lather. I really should have used the Shiloh aftershave I brought since that was my first post shave I bought from Maggard, but I can’t help splashing this Dammusi on a blue sky day.

Over on the DQ, I’ve enquirer about a fair trade for my Gillette slim. https://www.reddit.com/r/Wetshaving/comments/14tvgmp/saturday_daily_questions_newbie_friendly_jul_08/jr6fnid/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3

    • Brush: Maggard 30mm Black & White Synthetic #TOLL
    • Razor: Henson AL13 Mild
    • Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (2)
    • Lather: Maggard Razors – London Barbershop
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Seville

This is my first time using Maggard’s House Soap and the performance was pretty good. I used a gram of soap and got WAY too much lather out of it. Probably enough to do both a face and head shave, but I didn’t want to shave my head today. The scent on London Barbershop is a little generic, but it is definitely something I would be ok smelling like all day every day if I was on a budget and could only afford one tub of soap. I decided to do a shave today of all things from my very first Maggard’s order, which was my very first foray into this hobby. This is the first brush I bought (it’s way too big lol, also here is a Maggard's link to prove the TOLL tag), this was the first splash I bought (Seville is a top seller for a reason), and this was the first razor that I bought (I have since decided that it is way too mild, but it will always hold a nice place in my heart for being first).

In the DQT I asked a question about the OC plate for the vector. I really want to try it, but would like to hear some others’ experience first. Here is the permalink.

Healthy activity of the day: I got my longest ride so far yesterday. Starting to have to find new additions to the loop I’m riding. I’m continuing Hyperion today while killing time until it’s cool enough outside to go for today’s ride. This summer has been very bad for me sitting in front of a TV and reading is my new weapon against that. LG Mileage: 17 miles

I don't feel my self enough educated to speak about Barrister and Mann soap base. They are awesome! I love it! The scent is heavenly amazing!!! Like little innocent angels eat honey and drink milk and ambrosia and shit in little jar. I am in my Mountain house and even my mother come and take some Lather from my bowl and sniffing said "that smells divine ". Maggard own case of fine old whiskey to Barrister and Mann for this soap. From the three Gothique and Classic I prefer Angelique! The other is great to but to me Angelique is the best. Mostly i am attract to dark side but in this case light prevailed!!!
I bought this razor from my friend Ganko and he doesn't know much about manufacturer and period. Just assumptions. Obviously is made in Solingen, Germany to France and have Ten years guaranty. But from since??? I can bet is Totally out of guaranty. But shaves great. I don't have much experience with straight razors. In fact this is my second shaving with this one and second in my life. I call him " Mystery razor"! To fulfilled today challenge I asked for help for more information and there are some answers but still nothing concrete.

July 8, 2023 – Small Business Saturday… but in july

    • Brush: Paladin Chief 26mm Satin Juma Smoke
    • Razor: Blackland Blackbird Ti
    • Blade: Astra SP (3)
    • Lather: Maggard – Tobacco and Leather
    • Post Shave: Arianna and Evans – Vanille de Tabac

Small business Saturday holds a special place in my heart. I work in a family run small business and intricately understand some of the added difficulties small businesses face. Especially when Covid hit. Unfortunately a lot of good mom and pop businesses didn’t make it. I was glad to see many of the artisans and vendors were able to whether the storm. Enough about that though as today is all about Maggard.

The Shave: This being my first time trying a Maggard branded soap I was actually pleasantly surprised. The scent was good, not great though. I get the tobacco and leather scents, but for some reason I pick up an almond-like scent as well that is slightly irritating to my nose. Scent aside, the lathering process went quite well as the soap was easy to form a nice fluffy lather and provided reasonable slickness and cushion.

Post Shave: I didn’t find the post shave feel of the soap to be particularly great. Certainly not when compared to some of the top bases (Tusk, omnibus, NO). I found my face to be less happy after shaving. Now that is about what I expected as those 3 in particular are hard to beat. For aftershave I decided to match the Tobacco and Leather with the second most hated artisan (at least from what I read) of the sub Arriana and Evans’ Vanille de Tabac. The vanilla tobacco scent blended beautifully with the leather and tobacco notes of the soap and helped smooth out the overall smell for the day.

Theme: Maggard soap is of course on theme, but what about the Vanille de Tabac. I purchased Vanille de Tabac from Maggards when I was first getting into using soaps. So while it might not be Maggard brand, I still supported their business through the purchase. Moreover, it paired beautifully with the Maggard soap scent wise.

Challenge: I, like many others, have found the Daily Questions piece of the sub to be extremely useful. Over the last year or so of being active in this sub it has been an incredible source of information and learning. I did of course post both questions(1 and 2) and an answer today in accordance with the challenge requirements. There may be more posts as well, but hopefully those suffice.

I blame Maggard for me being here right now, haha. I purchased my starter set from them to save money. I now have a handful of razors, more soaps then I need, and my wallet may never recover. Haha.

For the fragrance both Fougère Angelique and balm 42 are very lemony and bright. I thought the earth from Druantia would combine nicely. It is a nice summer day with rain in the forecast

    7/8/23

My first time with a Maggards soap. It wasn't bad at all. Crafters Choice preblend scent pretty straightforward, but I so happen to like the scent. Performance was fine, nothing that wowed me or anything, but definitely not bad. On the sweeter side of things, I opted to pair it with a darker barbershop, Batavia Barber. The leather plays in comfortably with the barbershop vibe.

I had been hanging on to this knot for a while, and noticed an opportunity to get another scavenger hunt item in. The bore in this brush is pretty deep, so I took this new Maggards Silvertip and set it nice and low. Maggard knots always feel fantastic. Nice shave today.

u/Eructate generously sent me the smoosh that provided today's shave. Thank you sir!

I love Maggards and they get as much of my business as possible unless I'm ordering directly from the artisans which I also like to do. If you ever get a chance to visit the store it is absolutely magnificent inside. I just got a vintage straight razor back that Brad honed for me and he did a fantastic job. The soap functioned flawlessly for me, but I just don't think I'm that into barbershop scents.

The aftershave I chose was Barrister and Manns Fougere Angelique which was listed as a collaboration with Maggards. I had no idea. My lady really loves this one. Strong scent strength though so I don't wear it to work. I purchased fougere gothique from Maggards last time I was there and I really like them both.

Celebrating Maggard Razors today, where more of my money than I wish to own up to has been sent. The soap works pretty well, and smells good as well -- even if it isn't the most unique take on a barbershop. Smells great and inoffensive is sometimes the way to go.
