Austere August, Day 8 * Brush: Copper Zenith B36, bleached 28mm x 50mm * Razor: Ern 22 7/8 * Lather: Vintage Williams Tonsorial * Post: Proraso Red Aftershave * Frag: Ethos Mysore Santal

More of the same. Might throw the Williams in an actual mug tomorrow and see if that level of soaking improves the lather.

Straight shave number eight. Progress on my chin today. A couple of weepers to show for it, but I got it the smoothest I’ve been able to get it yet.

Brush was less pokey today compared to yesterday’s weirdness. I’m still needed to reload a touch for the second pass.

Knot splooged again today, despite repeating the same process from yesterday. I feel like my growing resentment might actually prevent me from getting burned out on my software. Lol.

Still a fine shave, and I love this handle. I continue to tell myself that it will get a better knot after a brief passaround in September. That is unless the clouds part and the water retention is suddenly a non-issue one day... I feel like it's probably as loose as it's going to get now, so I'm struggling to keep huffing that copium. YMMV. MOIMO. Not an influencer. Buy/use what you want/like.

8 Days in and I'm feeling good. Small nick today but otherwise really a good shave. There's a spot on my chin that I'd like to heal up and may need to shave around for a couple days so I stop scraping it back open, but, I usually just forget it's there until it starts bleeding again, like I did this morning. This thing far outperforms the Weck from last year and I'm really glad I didn't let that monstrosity scare me off of straights altogether. I'm contemplating picking up a Carbon Steel straight at some point since all y'all seem to say they're even "softer" than stainless.

Brush Pics in Album is performing well.

Everett is going to have absolutely no problem going the whole month with this smaller brush. The last couple tubs I used for AA I could see the bottom via the ring of death by the end, I don't think we're going to get anywhere close to that this month.

    Have a good day, all!

Given what I saw of the razor's edge (the title of a great book by W. Somerset Maugham, btw) yesterday, I expected a great shave today. This allowed me to really focus on Vida's soap which I think is exceptional. The history of the scent is extremely well chosen for us shaving nerds who enjoy such things, and the Darkwing base creates such a terrific lather that I suspect none of us are left wanting. Using the MOAR BOAR to complete this setup is, of course, the perfect fit (IMNSHO).

It was a very nice shave today. Everything was just dialed in so well. From lather to technique. BBS easy today, and no feedback from the splash.

I don't even know if I should bother with the tags anymore, since I posted shave too late. I am also too lazy to plead my case.

Brush is lathering nicely. Weighed the tub today using about 2.5 grams per shave I’m hoping for that to lessen as the month goes on. I’m sure I am overloading but im enjoying the lather I am getting. Tomorrow I will weigh again before the shave and start timing how long I load.

I am becoming more and more comfortable with using my left hand. Cheek and neck WTG is going nicely. All in all was a great shave.

    2024-08-8 Austere August Day 8

Almost dropped the razor while stropping. A little excitement there.

For some reason I keep misspelling "stropping". I need to proof these better - yeesh.

Really this has been going better than expected.

Regarding the boar. Doesn't look all that much different but the tips are getting softer. Has returned to shedding.

As always, take care and have a good day

Another lucky one today. Played the automobile shuffle today and traded cars around. Got my non-running car hauled away, picked up my sister’s car, who acquired our dad’s car now that he is medically prohibited from driving. That was a fight last week. It’s easier to get a title transferred than a registration, time-wise. 15 minutes at the Title Office and two hours at the BMV. Then some school-supply errands and a trip to the hospital to visit mother-in-law. She’s not answering many questions, but I made her laugh with an impromptu song-and-dance routine.

I had some leftover meatloaf and collards for breakfast, a peach for lunch, some peanut M&Ms for dinner. An Americano for an evening pick-me-up at the hospital. Finally, a late-night pizza pie from our favorite pub. And I’m trying not to be a night shaver. Really, I am. Why waste a good spray of Stag just to go to sleep? Answer that how you will, but I spray anyway. It might surely bring me good fortune.

At least I’m getting more comfortable with the Hartford.

    Be kind to one another.

Just another day and another shave. Definitely put a little thought into this shave from the standpoint of where was I several years ago when I first did the straight razor challenge for AA. I think one suggestion I'd take away from my shave tonight and pass on to some of the newbies is that you should definitely work towards making confident strokes and owning the shave. I know a few years ago at this point I would've felt very timid with the razor and just sort of stumbled my way through.

Another damn serviceable shave from the $headless and $MammothMafia24 setup. If I can get the neck area sorted out, I could easily see myself using something like this as a one-pass option any day of the week to spice things up. This challenge, however, requires two passes, and while an ATG pass leaves my cheeks smooth as butter, it's a bit too much hassle to keep switching up my grip while also stretching the skin taut, and the possibility of ending up like the (Heath Ledger) Joker should I slip up is enough to keep me second-guessing my every move.

I'll be honest, there was a tiny spot of blood on my neck today, right near the Adam's apple. I didn't even notice it at first until I touched it; it was so little blood it hardly warrants including, but the counter is there for a reason. Goes to show the neck is still a dicey area for me. Alum told me as much today, too.
