I've hit the long haul portion of the brush break in process. The noticable daily softening is done, for now, and we have entered the "it isn't soft yet, but still works" phase. If this is anything like my last B36, it'll stay like this for a while and then will start to soften up again in a week or so.

The razor continues to shave well. The soap would benefit from some warm water blooming, but that isn't possible with the scuttle, so it takes extra long to get the lather close enough to use. The one benefit of a larger diameter brush is if it blooms much more, it won't fit in the scuttle and I'll switch back to my Seaforth mug. Then both the soap and the brush can soak at the same time.

On a family adventure to Memphis this week and decided to splurge and stay in the Peabody hotel! If you’re not familiar with it, this is the hotel where they have a duck march every day and they had a little duck shaped soap in the bathroom!

Straight shave number six and I think maybe it’s starting to feel more comfortable. Maybe? I experimented with XTG and ATG on my chin today as I continue to figure out how to get that as smooth (or at least close to it) as my cheeks and did succeed in getting it smoother than usual, but I also got a couple weepers…

First sighting of split tips on the brush today and it’s almost holding enough lather for two passes now. Just a small reload needed today before during pass two.

I can’t smell the soap anymore. The splash is giving me peach notes finally. The brush is breaking in, but still a long way to go. But using it wetter is allowing me to do 30 second loads and get 2.5 good passes.

One thing that’s amazing is while I don’t smell the soap when I lather, I smell it a ton soaking my brush. I checked and my Moar boar has a faint hygge smell too it (which is what I broke that in with). Boar brushes seem to soak a lot of scent used for their breakin.

Made the shift to a 6:30am shave today after shaving at about 10pm last night - I was nervous, but, it was by far my best shave thus far. I am learning. I have paid much more attention to using the heel, middle, and toe (which means I'm controlling where the non-used part is much better) and, along the curved parts I'm making sure not to try and curve the blade around my face and instead finish the stroke, have the blade detach, adjust, and re-go. It's been helpful. I also heard u/Zimora's voice (well, voice via text message because do any of us really know each other?) say "Don't chase BBS" as I was very tempted to chase BBS and that probably prevented me from overdoing it and cutting myself. So, all in all, improvements. Let's go.

Brush pics in album is breaking in very nicely! It's super low density and that's my only complaint, otherwise it's a very pleasant experience.

Big advantage of a morning shave is I get to smell Everett all day long - so nice.

$BarnyardChallenge shave live from the Colonnade Hotel in Boston this morning. I don't usually schlep a full size shave set up with me, but since it's AA, I didn't have a choice. Thankfully, I had one last use of the sample splash left so I was able to save a little space. The brush continues its smooth break in with before and after pics here. The mutton base continues to kick ass and the shaves continue to be sublime. Not much more I could ask for.

With the bristle tips starting to split the boar no longer feels scritchy, although now I can feel that a few of the bristles are inverted. They don't bother me so I'm not going to worry about them, however if they're still noticeable after the knot is fully broken in, I'll pluck them.

Blade feels great. I think I've hit a plateau with my straight technique, where I'm able to get a comfortable shave but still have some trouble areas (like right under my nose, and my chin). Still, I'm happy to have the opportunity to keep working on it this month.

It is still taking a decent amount of time to build a lather, but small signs of the bristles softening are showing. I can’t splay the knot, but it bends a little more. Shave was pretty good. Still not as smooth as a three pass DE shave, but much closer tonight. No burning from the splash! Just the tingleof the coolant. Trying to pay attention to the heel and toe of the blade. I use the toe to maneuver near my ear, but near my goatee, the heel works better. Center of my face I can use the whole edge without much trouble if the lather is slick enough. I have yet to notice much difference in the blade. I suspect when I hone, I’ll just do 8,000 and 12,000; unless there any nicks or dings in the blade.

Weighed out my soap for the first time since starting AA, seems about right to do it every five days. 10 grams down, five shaves in before tonight equals 2 grams per shave, 2-3 healthy passes per shave seems pretty good. All while breaking in a new boar. We’ll see how this develops over the month but hot damn, not sure what the empty tub weighs but all in all that’s looking at 100 shaves per tub of the finest mutton base I know. Color me impressed. I may load with a bit more abandon now. But I do love the thrill of austerity. Cheers homies!

Tried a couple things for the first time today.

First time I’ve ever used permafrost drops in lather (I’ve only ever used them in splash before). About half way into lathering I added a drop to some lather on the brush then finished the process. Noticed the cooling without it being overbearing. Going to try two drops tomorrow.

I also tried a new shave pattern on the back of my head. I can’t really do ATG back there because it’s the one spot on my scalp that gets irritated. Tried doing XTG in a different way to see if that makes things better. I’ll report back in a future post.

Day 6: Switched to WTG / XTG to let the skin recover a bit. Today I did a couple of weigh-ins to see how much soap I was losing to the tub rinshing after a shave. Post-shave (after rinse) yesterday was 137.4g and post-shave (before rinse) was 134.1g. After rinsing today, it weighed in at 130.6g. I lost more soap to rinsing than I used in the shave. Today was the lightest I've loaded all month, and I struggled to build an adequate lather for the second pass; I thought about going back to the tub for a few swirls, but didn't.

Here is an album that I am going to continue uploading to throughout the month to show progress of the brush. I weighed the tub again post-shave today and it was 137.4, a difference from yesterdays's post-shave of 11.3g... I'm not sure this tub will make it to the end of the month...
