I am not a fan of face lathering, especially with a stiff brush. I have spotted some split bristles, so eventually I expect this to be a more comfortable brush. I would like a chonkier handle a little more. It is a good looking handle, but it swoops in a little more than I’d prefer. I played around with the blade angle a few degrees to see if I could get closer, but I’m going back to a flatter angle. I got two little weepers and lots of burning from the splash. Only 1 bristle shed today, so hopefully all the loose ones are done with shedding.

I decided to take a picture of My Pig Pen. The Copper Scrubby is getting an amazing patina now after 2 years. It was my first Austere August brush in 2022.

I enjoyed AA last year, but this one is shaping up to be even better. The brush last year (Semogue Taj) was already in a cracking state by now, this one will take a little longer but the funk is reducing swiftly. Reducing the soak seems to help make it a little less hungry on the soap as well, so happy days. The software as expected is excellent and I'm finding that I'm managing to fit using the straight into the morning routine fairly well. We'll see whether that continues when the inlaws arrive next week and it becomes even more of a mad house around here!

    Have a grand day all!

    Cheers

Straight shave number three. Progress on my chin today. I tried the rolling technique from the video that u/BeerEater1 shared yesterday and that helped. It still doesn’t exactly feel comfortable but definitely more comfortable than anything else I had tried. The brush is getting nice already, though still eating lather like it’s all you can eat. And bonus points: I did remember to strop today.

Knot was a bit easier this morning because I didn't soak it, I just lightly wet it under the faucet prior to lathering. It still had a bit of a gush when splayed, but not nearly as much, and it didn't wreck the consistency of the lather. Blade was OK. I used a faster draw strop, and despite exceeding the count I'd normally do, it just didn't feel as smooth. This strop is great with some blades, but I think this one does better on the Bridle.

Tried to do a quick shave this morning before basketball practice, and am going to pay for that all afternoon with an irritated chin.

Three days in I'm struck at how much more forgiving a straight is than the Weck was.

Also, I've yet to lose a single hair from my brush, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

     Edge Condition Album

Another day, another vacation from stropping. Today's shave was more comfortable and closer than the last two days. How can that be? I've done no stropping, and some straight razors shavers strop before the shave, during the shave, and after the shave. Well, all part of the grand plan.

TLDR; My technique is adapting. (Feel absolutely free to ignore the following.)

I thought of this "no stropping" challenge when u/djundjila first suggested the idea of FriodomRiders. I strop after shaving mostly because I want to make sure that the edges on my (mostly carbon steel) razors get completely dry. With stainless steel, that's really not an issue. Towel drying will suffice.

In my very early days of shaving (just after the asteroid wiped out the dinasaurs), a DE blade was supposed to go one month of (1-pass) shaves. No stropping. Since taking up the hobby and also understanding the value of multi-pass shaving, I tend to toss a DE blade between 8 and 12 uses. No stropping. Artist Club blade? Twenty-ish uses. No stropping. GEM twenty-ish uses (but 31 was no problem). No stropping. u/sgrdddy has put a few (😉) shaves on a single Nacet blade over the years. No stropping.

    You get the point.

If machine-made blades provide great shaves and don't need daily stropping why in the world do straight razors? I think the answer is just tradition and perhaps, honing technique that relies on stropping for final edge condition. I think I'm relying on the former because I know I don't do the latter.

Since I knew I would try to go 31 days with one edge, I chose to create an edge that is slightly less refined, and I worked to create convex roundness at the apex. I expect that this type of edge is more durable at the expense of a little closeness. The shaves I had on days 1 and 2 were very comfortable and slightly less BBS than my normal 2-pass routine. Pretty much what I expected. For today's shave I played with angle and pressure a bit and was quite surprised to have shave quality that equals my normal straight razor shave. Perhaps you can teach an old dog new tricks!

In past years I have kept a microscope photo record of edge degradation. I'm doing that this year as well, but I think it isn't really necessary to update edge condition daily. This time around, I plan to make one photo each week. I made a photo of the edge condition before use, included it at the end of my honing video, but did not post it here.

Here is a photo of the razor's edge on July 31.

$Honemeisterschaft there was no stroping like yesterday for the $FriodomRiders which shaved nicely like the first day. Better $MammothMafia24 lather with the $RawHoggin, that is stinking the soap hopefully I can forget the reek with the aftershave/Edp treatment.

    Sigh. Of. Relief.

I found the time today to hone my razor, and now it's smoooooth! ☺️ No more tuggy shaves for this face this month.

About my process: I'm using a Naniwa combination waterstone with a 3k side and a 10k side. This time, I killed the edge and then honed it on the 3k side, frequently checking the edge on a strip of styrofoam until it pushcut easily without much resistance along the entire edge. Next, I switched to 10k and repeated the procedure. After a while, the pushcuts become effortless. First only on some parts of the edge, which then tells me where to apply light pressure with my fingers until I have effortless pushcuts along the length of the edge. I'm using both trailing and leading edge strokes, but only apply pressure during the trailing edge bit. I have a pasted canvas strop which I use exclusively after honing, and a few laps on it make the edge feeling smoother during the first shave in my experience, but also seemingly sharper: the pushcuts in styrofoam are like the blade melts into it. I'm thinking this is the edge being deburred and possibly the bevel convexed by the pasted strop, but I can't know for sure.

This is pretty much also the process I'd use at home, the only difference is that I have a big bag of styrofoam packing peanuts for edge testing (the u/gcgallant method) at home and my muscle memory works better with those than the strips of styrofoam I managed to scrounge up in my vacation location.

The brush is starting to resist splaying less, which makes it easier to lather. It's still hogging the lather and the tips haven't started to split yet, so there's still some work to be done.

    August 3rd, 2024 - Stagalicious

Day 3, not much to report. The boar knot has broken in significantly and it almost held enough lather for pass 2 without hitting the tub. I haven't mentioned it yet but this brush is the fastest brush I've ever used when it comes to picking up soap. My "reload" for pass 2 was 3 swirls, the load for pass 1 was something like 15ish. Amazing stuff.

Spent the day with my girlfriend exploring and I'm pooped. Looking forward to my Sunday reset ✌

    August 3, 2024 * Preshave: Hot Shower

Post Shave: House of Mammoth Everett Splash
Post Shave: House of Mammoth Everett EDP

After listening to Pudding's advice to hit the skin while the blade was moving vs. starting from a stop on my skin I had the best first pass of the three so far. And, subsequently, the worst second pass. I was probably overconfident and should have slowed down some, but I need to go to bed and I'm sloppy. I also shaved very shortly after a workout and that usually doesn't go super well even with a DE, so, maybe it was that.

But also there were parts of the shave where it felt quite tuggy - I can't imagine this razor is dulling at all after just 2 uses and I think I'm stroping correctly so it should be fine. I'm sure it's user error and I'll learn.

Brush was noticeably better than the first shave as it starts opening up. I guess even inexpensive boars will break in. Here's the Album. I did change the name in my SOTD to be consistent with the other homies using Rob's Finest - but, it's the same brush.

Everett is still Everett - great.

Here's hoping the blood I'm donating to my sink stops flowing so freely (though I certainly need to order another styptic here soon) and that none of these cuts scar. Speaking of - I should probably figure out some anti-scar moisturizer or something...

    Have a good night folks.
