    02-08 - The first cut…

    • Brush: Yaqi 'Heavy Metal' 24mm silvertip badger
    • Razor: Marianna #310
    • Blade: Fromm Shaper (2)
    • Lather: House of Mammoth - Hygge - Soap
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Hygge - Aftershave Balm

Day 2 of what is very quickly shaping up to be a horrible mistake. Yes, the regret for my overzealous and overconfident decision to Weck my face for a month straight has hit me like a two-mile long freight train in what some may well call record time.

We were off to a truly terrible start today as, when I tried to insert the blade into the razor, upon bracing it against a towel so as not to slice my hand open the small plastic tab thingy on the end (who's the straight razor historian here who can name that part of the instrument for me?) snapped off.

At first I was pissed and disappointed that I broke my toy only a day into this ordeal and after only like three shaves total with it ever, but that feeling quickly changed to despair as I began to realise how damn important that little nubbin actually is to holding the razor properly.

Oh, also, I trimmed my beard with a pair of scissors beforehand to prep it for its removal during today's shave - it just had to go as it was soaking up all the lather and was being a pain to maneuver around.

So off it went. However, I messed the $MammothMafia24 lather up again and ended up with something very thin and unsuitable for scraping a massive blade across my face. One more day like this and I'm gonna have to break the bowl out to lather in there again - I can't do 31 days of shit lather while also trying not to cut my own throat.

And cut myself I did. A nice little wedge out of my jaw just a little to the right of my chin. I think it was at least partly due to me having to employ a really weird hold on the razor due to a) my glasses being in the way and b) that missing plastic bit causing problems, and it all happened on the second pass when I thought I was well in the clear. Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer, however, and I will now officially have to bring in a cut/blood counter. From then on, it all went downhill - I did a truly terrible number on my neck and from the second I put the razor down, the red splotches started to form all around. I had to break the alum out to stop the bleeding from the cut and soothe the razor burn, and I ended up wincing so hard from the stinging I made my gums bleed, too. Fuck it, we'll add that to the counter. The $headless challenge is getting its blood one way or another.

One thing I will say about this razor is that my cheeks and jawline (apart from the missing chunk) feel great - ultra smooth and clean. But my neck meat is screaming just below the jaw like a starving street urchin on the pavement outside of the ivory tower, so that definitely puts a damper on things.

After the shave, I tried to mend the broken plastic nub thingy with some bargain-bin super glue I found, and my misfortunes did not end there. As if to mock me, the second I pierced the tube with the detachable nozzle to allow the glue to come out it shot out of its holding cell like a volcano on Taco Bell, coating my hands in a nice helping of superglue. Fun. After dealing with that I tried to put the plastic back together, and after a while of fiddling around it did work - but it looks damn ugly and I'm half expecting it to break again tomorrow. All in all, this could have been a better day, but this is part of the journey, isn't it?

Zero issues with the Frio so far. Perfect shave in 3 passes. The knot is messing with me, though. I used it a few times ahead of August but never with Tusk. It is unique in how it seems to be trapping water down in the base of the knot. You think you shook it and its fine, but then it floods the tub. You squeeze it and it picks up especially dry, then water gushes out as soon as it's lightly splayed on your face. I'm sure I'll get used to it over the next week, but I am not sold on it just yet. Performs fine otherwise, of course.

TFIF! May your workday move especially quick and your weekend especially slow (unless you're working the weekend, in which case forget that).

    2024-08-01 Austere August Day 2

Got some pics of the boar brush I'm breaking in for this month Shore Shave Player Custom to better show off the interesting coin placement on the handle.

Face is a bit tender this morning but made it through another go at it.

As always, take care and have a good day

Austere August, Day 2 * Brush: Copper Zenith B36, bleached 28mm x 50mm * Razor: Ern 22 7/8 * Lather: Vintage Williams Tonsorial * Post: Proraso Red Aftershave * Frag: Ethos Mysore Santal

Day 2 went better than day 1. The main difference is that the brush is loosening up. It still fit in the scuttle, but needed squeezed a bit. Also figured out if I stand the brush a bit more vertically, the knot gets evenly soaked.

The stamping is almost worn off the soap after two days. We'll see how fast this brush eats the puck.

Brush: Zenith B36 Copper 28mmx50mm Boar
Razor: J.A. Henckels Friodur 451 5/8 Stainless Full Hollow Square Point * Lather: House of Mammoth - Alive - Soap
Post Shave:* House of Mammoth - Alive - Aftershave

Day two ever with a straight and it already felt much more comfortable than yesterday. Sticking with using both hands. Razor in my right hand for my right side and razor in left for my left side which makes stretching the skin much easier and takes most of the effort from shaving my jawline since I can just pull most of that skin up over my jaw to where it’s flat (maybe one of the positives of looser aging skin?). Mostly comfortable other than my chin that is. I managed to get it mostly smooth but that never felt comfortable and I really have no good idea how to even go at it other than just some sketchy trial and error.

In a classic rookie mistake I completely forgot about stropping the razor before the shave today. Since I need to get at least another 29 shaves out of this edge, I need to do better at remembering that step…

This boar was noticeably less skritchy today and already splaying well, though it’s still eating lather like the hungry pig that it came from.

Love this soap and splash. I feel that its freshness counters the oppressive heat we're having. Yesterday was the first time that I used a straight razor and did not strop it after the shave. (I only strop after a shave, not before.) I plan to continue without stropping for this entire month. I'm expecting that I will notice an edge difference somewhere around 12 shaves. That's where I notice a DE blade beginning to go off. I may need to add a third pass at that point.

Shave #2 and I was able to get a little splay on the brush so my lather was much better than yesterday. Still had to reload between passes though. It shed its first hair today, I’m sure there will be more. Varen was a treat! So far so good.

    August 2, 2024 – AA24 Day Two

    • Brush: Omega 50068 Bambino 18mm boar
    • Razor: Hartford Cutlery #20 4/8
    • Lather: Chiseled Face – Midnight Stag
    • Post Shave: Chiseled Face – Midnight Stag
    • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co – Unscented Balm
    • Fragrance: Chiseled Face – Midnight Stag

Day two with the Hartford was just a bit better today. My lather was better today having loaded directly from the tub and reloading as necessary with water as needed. I know Chiseled Face is not in the same caliber as other soaps, but I can get good lathers with it.

As for the razor, I’m still working the angles to get what feels right and varying the length of the strokes. My neck is pretty sore, so I threw on some additional balm to finish. Getting all hot and sweaty on our daily walk did help much for comfort either.

Happy Friday! I’m off to see Steep Canyon Rangers for the first of two of their shows in two months.

    Be kind to one another.

Here is day 2 of Raw hoggin had to go back to the tub again for a second pass but only for one side of my face. First brush load was good for 1 1/2 passes.

No blood loss today, but again I’m going slow.

Decent shave today - a few nicks and cuts again but I'm expecting that. None of them have bitten me like the weck did all last August, but when I'm done I've got these cuts. I assume it'll get better as I get better.

The brush seemed alright again today - it does lather well enough, it's just so dang low density. And there are clearly some upside down hairs in there you can see here and here. They're the dark ones, I assume, and I can feel them poking my face when I lather, it's unpleasant but I don't know if the rules allow for me to pluck them so I'm just hoping they fall out. Clearly paragon is not too concerned with QC.

Everett is Everett - not going to be much to say here, it's just excellent all around. I'm really glad I went with this scent because it's perfect for these late hot summer days. I was initially concerned it was going to be too sweet and overwhelm me but it's really well balanced and I enjoy the heck out of it. Not going to be a problem using it every day. Plus my kids love the artwork, so that's fun. They all wanted to watch while I shaved today and were interested in the new straight style of razor, which was pretty fun. Kids ++

    Keep on keeping on, friends.

    Stag Spray Day 2

The first pass of both days has gone great so far. The second pass got me yesterday, and on top of reopening yesterday's battle wound, I ended up with quite a bit of irritation on the neck, which did not mix well with today's 100-degree temperatures. However, I had the Stag to carry me through the day, so I consider myself lucky.

Today was the last day of band camp so that is good. It sucks that I got one of my intense teenage acne breakouts the day before a month long straight razor challenge lol; the aftershave burned like in home alone. Maybe the boar brush is good for the acne by exfoliating though? It's weird not changing anything about what I use in the SOTD so that makes it easy.

Day 2! I'm sort of regretting my scent choice. I'm sure that will pass. Easy shave again today. This blade is actually too sharp. I tested the feather artist club or 10 shaves last month to see if it could be done on 1 blade and so I'm a used to the shitkicked blade from before. No pic today as I am absolutely wrecked from work and climbing this week. Climbing tomorrow and hiking/camping Saturday Sunday. Gonna shave in a glacial lake on Sunday. Might need to text my post to someone from my inreach. Haha

The first pass was fucking awful lmao. I sliced the HELL out of my face, it's my own fault. Poor technique, angle, grip, etc. I'm trying to figure out how to get certain "hard to shave" areas, such as next to and behind my ears.

Second pass was much easier, probably because most of the hair was already gone and it was just getting smooth at that point. Nicked myself a couple times again but it was nothing terrible like the first pass. I need to watch some videos. At least I'm stropping properly I think.

I think I found my biggest complaint for the next month and that’s going to be motivating myself. I’ve not been shaving daily in quite some time and now all of a sudden it’s a thing. I think I need to figure out swapping my shaves to the morning as that’s a little easier for me to make myself do.
