    Daily Theme - Father's Day

Been a good while since I've used GFT Eucris (if nothing else these games make me dust off a lot of my gear), it's a cracking classic scent to me. It seems oddly devisive with some finding it floral and others dark in some way, it just smells spicy (Not those ones) to me and something I imagine my grandad would have used. GFT established in 1875 definitely meets the brief being 108 years older than myself.

Along with this I picked up the Simpson Chubby 2 SiLVERTiP, a lovely brush for this cream, almost went for one of Semogue boars but Simpsons beat them out having been established in 1919. Then there's my second favourite straight, Frederick Reynolds Swayback that I picked up from Griffiths Shaving, lovely condition and a great shaver. As far as I can tell they were established around 1840.

    Challenge - Leg Day

Sorry ladies and gentlemen, I am out on this one. As I said yesterday the Mrs does not like the idea of me with shaved legs, so I will bow out and self-scrub.

    Photocontest

Being father's day I had to aim this at 'DIY', whilst I'm certainly not an expert around the house, I can at least cover the basics without chopping my limbs off!

Already been spoilt this morning, and I'm not cooking tonight (I do bigger meals at the weekend) so it's a cracking day!

Hope the rest of you get on well with it, Happy Fathers Day to all, have a good one!

    Cheers

    Marc

    • Lather: Barbasol – Shaving Cream Soothing Aloe
    • Post Shave: Calvin Klein – Obsession Balm
    • Fragrance: Ralph Lauren – Polo Green

    Daily Theme: Father's Day

Theme justification: Barbasol Shaving Cream is currently produced by Perio Inc. Their "about us" page states that they come from a line of dental companies, "the first of which was founded in 1903." 1903 was before I was born.

Also, Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! I know it's not an easy job, but it does mean a lot. Here's to you!

Relevant Post Shave & Frag: Continuing the "older than me" theme (plus paying homage to my father and grandfather). I'm using CK Obsession Aftershave balm. The [Calvin Klein fashion house was founded in 1968](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_Klein_(fashion_house)). My frag is Ralph Lauren Polo Green. Ralph Lauren was founded in 1967. Both are older than I am. As a bonus, my grandfather wore Obsession (and used Barbasol) and my dad wore Polo Green.

    Daily/Special Challenge: Leg Day!

    NSFW WARNING: SEXINESS* & BLOOD

First off, I'd like to state that I know I'm posting this extremely early in the day. My shave did, in fact, occur on 2024.06.16. I decided I wanted to get this done ASAP, so I took a night shower and shaved right after.

Probably the challenge I was looking forward to the least outside of WetTuber Day. As I said for that challenge, though, mama didn’t raise no bitch.

This challenge did make me change my calendar. I had to make an impromptu stop at Target yesterday to pick up some Barbasol. I had planned on using some brush-less Cella cream, but I only have a sample of that. Hence the trip to Target. Thankfully it was only a couple bucks. Plus, I found this neat stackable drawer for my razors, so that was nice.

First thing I needed to do was for this shave was read /u/Newtothethis's guide on shaving legs. It was very informative. I grabbed my trusted Henson+, loaded a Wizamet, and got to work.

To start, shorts for me are just above the knee. So that's where I'll be shaving to. Started with my left leg. Okay, everything is going fine. Just going section by section, like the guide told me to do. First part done (first pass). Left leg first pass done.

    Not too bad at all!

Now, here's where the pictures stop a bit (mainly because I was in a groove). I forgot that I have some scars on my right leg that make my skin not smooth. Childhood injuries et al. As a result, I had a decent amount of blood, especially just below my right knee. I cleaned it up before taking a picture of my 1 pass legs. Nothing too major, all things considered.

Pass number two was a lot easier. Without the hair clogging up my razor I was able to make quick work on the ATG pass. The result was some smooth legs. Sorry for the blood in the photo. Unfortunately, I did forget to take a before photo, but you can see me hair in my

Overall, not a terrible job. The worst part about this shave was dealing with the clogging razor. Seemed like every inch or so the razor would clog. Guess my leg hair was denser than I thought. Also, I abandoned the brush about halfway through. It worked fine, but it was quicker just to glob it on with my hands.

*Sexiness is in the eye of the beholder. Any unauthorized use of these photos will result in lengthy litigation where we both have to explain what they hell we're doing this month.

    Fragrance description

For this, I'm just going to focus on Polo Green. This scent sparks a lot of memories for me since it is what my dad wore when I was growing up (mostly). That's not to say they are all good memories. The mix of pine and leather create a distinct smell that brings me back to childhood.

    Now onto the shave!

I covered the shave in detail under the challenge header. The barbasol worked well enough for this task, with the Henson razor being the best choice for the job due to its mild nature. The CK balm was actually quite nice on my bare legs.

Most of artisan that I know is younger then me so thank God I have this Tobacco leaf in my shaving goods cabinet. I don't know is here anyone that is not familiar with TOBS. If you are not you can Google it. They start in 19h sentry ..... Yes I am old but not that old that's why I pick them to be sure! Last year I have to explain to everyone why my legs are shaved. At firs I explained about Lather Games but after few days i was tiered of it and I was saying that I loose a bet. And here a go again. This time I'll start directly with lost bet. I don't know why do this (watching men's legs) to your self but you asked for it and I delivered. After 2 hours and 3 bowls of lather I was ready! Maybe you are wondering why I have so much safety razors in description? I started with Karve OC-B plate after a few strokes changed to OC-C plate and after few strokes I get cardinal decision and I take Lupo 95OC. Karve was effective but washing the hair was a bitch because of the teeth because of the "hooks". Lupo doesn't have it and was super easy to clean. And "Find out how the another side lives" is not so correct. After i finish I make a conversion with girl. She said that use shower gel to shave her legs when she take a shower and she is ready for less then 10 minutes ( and believe me she has a very long legs). She doesn't have so long hair on her legs. Not so dense and thick. Comparing my and her legs it's not fair. Even if my shaved legs are so sexy!

    • Brush: [unknown] - Boar Bristle

    • Post Shave: 4711 - Echt Kölnisch Wasser Original Eau De Cologne - After Shave
    • Fragrance: Knize Ten - Toilet Water

One of the most important influences from my father has been his insatiable curiosity.
    Seeking to know more.
And therefore, be skeptical about what others may take for granted.
Embrace facts, but challenge conventions and question authority.

The documented facts are as follows:

    1. Santa Maria Novella, nominally est. 1612 but the monks' pharmacy dates back to 1221
    2. 4711 has a complicated history, but in spite of their Farina-related claims, in any case the brand was established in the 19th Century
    3. Knize, est. 1858 (for some initiatory reason, the English version of the company history is in German nonetheless)

Enough to know they are all older than me, but also enough to realize how hard it is to define something as apparently easy as a formal beginning.

We strive for clean-cut truths. Distinction through separation, like looking at the world in black and white, and then deciding that one is bad, and the other is good. This is the attitude that fueled Scientific Racism, a self-asserted "scientific" dogma that cherry-picked some incomplete "evidence" and then reframed it into a worldview to try and legitimize agendas of oppression and domination.

Dem Bones is a spiritual composed by James Weldon Johnson and his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson, two great African-American artists and activists who contributed to a more open culture during the first half of the 20th Century. The song evokes the resurrection of the army seen by Ezekiel in the Bible (no, not this bit), and offers an obsessive progression into the interconnectedness of the various bones of each body.

Its message of connectedness has an anti-establishment vibe that has been reflected in its use in a memorable episode of The Prisoner; on the other hand, the satyrical film The Ruling Class underlines the word DISCONNECT to bring about a message of fear and oppression.

This brings me to TODAY'S SPECIAL CHALLENGE: I am here to make a stand against any oppressive view based on black and white, polarizing disconnected-ness.
I first thought about going on strike against the auhtoritarian, frat-house attitude of "daring" people to submit to the request of doing something on a specific part of their body in exchange for a reward. Talk about toxic peer pressure. And what is with your voyeuristic insistence on looking at my body, my house, my intimacy?
But I remain a team player, I am not going to butt heads against you.
Rather than joining u/AirBudRulian in his paranoid solo antagonism, my most positive response is to share some sociable yet chaotic anarchism, just like the rebellious Number 48 interpreted by Alexis Kanner.
    We are all connected.
Your thigh bone is connected to your hip bone.
As controversial as it may seem, butt is leg.
Your leg bones are literally part of your butt.
So, that's what I shaved today. Unfortunately, pics are not only NSFW, but posting and/or soliciting them may be considered a crime in most countries.

    SOTD WRITEUP: A SPA(RTAN) SUNDAY

I had already used the S.M. Novella as a post-shave on Cream day, but today I used it for the first time as a soap replacement: its officicially listed use also as a shaving cream perfectly fits today's question about boundaries.
Both my razor and brush for today were my father's.
On my face, the brush felt as soft as sandpaper, and was pretty useless in getting a lather: in fact, the S.M. Novella cream seems to reject oppression, and doesn't want to be whipped. As I wanted to be a trooper and do every step in TODAY'S SPECIAL CHALLENGE, I still used the brush on my butt, which proved to be less caring about the scrub (u/Enndeegee, this is dedicated to you).
After the shave, the alcoholic splash felt like a slap on my face (I had no visible cuts, but I got that burn that makes you feel like a good Spartan: no pain no gain!), but just a tingle on my butt.
In the end, all four cheeks feel soft and relaxed.
I could definitely wear the shortest of shorts, like hot pants or some vintage Tom Ford Gucci Summerwear, and people would notice my clean and thorough shave.
    Mission accomplished.

    THE FRAG CONNECTION

The transition from the powdery soapiness of S.M. Novella to the classic cologne of 4711 to the leathery-animalic notes of Knize is less audaucious as some may think, as Knize's top notes are actually super-cologney: once again, there's no disconnect, just an organic transition, a continuum of awesomeness.

    FOF

ODE TO THE RULEMAKERS: As part of this Sunday's supplement, here's a hint to solve the hidden puzzle in my SOTD entry from Day 4: today's ode to the rulemakers is contained under the title of that post, in the first 9 letters after the word "THEME". Additional hint: the first of the three words is KISS.

11PM Update: IF ANYONE THOUGHT THE REIGNING CHAMPION WASN'T GOING TO SHAVE HIS LEGS, GO GET YOUR HEAD CHECKED. CHAMPIONS NEVER QUIT!!!!

So this morning, I posted the bullshit below about how I wasn't going to shave my legs today, something something revolution, blah, blah, blah.... And some of you fools actually bought it. That's what separates the winners from the ~~losers~~ not winners. I had a busy fucking day today, celebrating three different Father's Days, so I shaved my legs in the car, with my 3.5 yr old twins in the backseat, and my wife driving. Ensuring we following Rule 3.4 aka "The u/MrTangerinesky Rule"

    CUE THE VIDEO

I forgot to take a before picture, so here's a screengrab of from the video. And here's the after: Hakuna MaFUCKINGtata indeed. Silky smooth. Oh, and leg shaving is no joke: GORE WARNING HERE'S MY BLEEDING LEGS. Maybe next time, I don't shave my legs in the car with an MMOC?

    The Original SOTD Post below:

~~The judges think they're real funny doing a surprise leg shave day challenge on Father's Day. Real cute, guys. But you know what,~~ ~~for the first time in my Lather Games career, I'm skipping a challenge~~~~. I'm gonna bet on myself and not worry about the .2 points. And I suggest everyone else do the same. We need to send a message to the judges that we, the people, have power around here! Sure, the Lather Games wouldn't exist without these people who volunteer much of their time and get nothing in return.... BUT... The Lather Games also wouldn't exist without us, The Participants! And I'm tired and being pushed around by their challenges! And I'm not gonna take it anymore! If everyone joins me and skips this absurd challenge, no one gets an advantage and we ALL head into tomorrow without the .2 points for this challenge and we can pretend like it never happened. We need to take the power back! Now,~~ ~~WHO'S WITH ME~~~~?? VIVA LA REVOLUTION!!!~~

    Now, on to the shave:

To celebrate Father’s Day, I’m shaving with TOBS, because that’s probably what my dad learned to shave with a bazillion years ago. I feel like TOBS is like the Sears and Roebuck of the wetshaving world and the year is 1995. At one point, they were the powerhouse of shaving and one of the only games in town… Then a little upstart or two comes along and TOBS isn’t worried. “We have our reputation and a big customer base,” they’ll arrogantly say. Then slowly their market share gets chipped away, bit by bit. Not enough to be worrisome at all, but just enough where executive think: “That’s weird. I guess it was a down year.”

But the next year is down too. And so is the next one. And your customer base start to (1) realize there are much better options out there and (2) they all start to die because they’re old. It wasn’t good for Sears and it can’t be good for TOBS. As we’ve learned, just because you’re a big company doesn’t mean you can’t fail (unless you’re a bank or car company) and I doubt King Charles will be bailing out Taylor of Old Bond St when they inevitably (hopefully) go under. There’s so much better stuff out there. We know it. And it’s only a matter of time before their customers find out about it too.

As far as the scents of the day go, TOBS Avocado is a “fresh fougere” according to TOBS’ website and while I don’t quite smell that, the soapmakers’ word is canon around these parts. To my nose, it almost smells a little cucumber and powdery. The scent is fine, but nothing to write home about. For my splash, we have Spearhead’s Heather splash and the matching EdT. While TOBS Avocado is a basic scented “fougere”, Heather a wonderfully complex scent that is perfect for any day of the week. It has fresh green notes, clean lavender, and bright bergamot. Wearing the scents of Heather took my scents of the day from meh to pretty damn good. #FOF

Challenge: ~~I’ve addressed this above.~~~~. Now, if only I had a suggestion for the judges on what they~~ ~~can do with those .2 points…~~ Champions never quit. Of course I shaved my legs. I wish I used a better soap than TOBS though.

Soap Theme Justification: TOBS has been around like a bazillion years.

Happy Father's Day to all of the dads and stepdads out there!

While I was having a lovely shave this morning, I'm pretty sure my dad was preparing to pull out his yellow Bic disposable and Edge Gel and go to town. Don't think that I haven't tried to convert him back to the ways of his youth, but over the years I have been met with looks of derision and tales of how DE razors just sliced him up. It probably didn't help my dad that my grandfather was a traveling salesman, which left the "How To Shave" teaching to my grandmother. My grandmother did a fine job raising two boys in a lot of respects. Teaching them how to shave might not have been her finest moment. And my dad is a pretty dapper guy, which makes his whole crappy shaving routine all that more maddening. Shaving choices aside, I'll be ringing up my dad in a bit to wish him a Happy Father's Day and making sure he's not building an Ark down there in Miami this week.

I won't tell him about my shave with brands and products that are definitely older than me. The GEM, even as a Frankenrazor of sorts, is made of pieces that my grandfather could have shaved with. Tabac...That brand is definitely older than me. It's a soap that reminds us Gen-Xers of the grandparents coming over and then rummaging through nana's purse to see what treasures were in there. I wedged my puck of Tabac into an Old Spice mug that I found at my in-law's house last year. We know Old Spice is eternal. Semogue has been making brushes since the '50s. And then there's D.R. Harris, which has been around since 1789. I'm pretty sure my great, great, great, great (?) grandparents were too busy being chased around by the Cossacks to worry about smelling great with whatever DRH was producing at the time. Zingari Man is the only modern brand that was used today. I think I had a pretty friggin' proper Father's Day shave, if I do say so myself.

As to the Daily Challenge, I'm going to take an F on this assignment. I'm just too hairy of a bastard to have smooth legs, thanks to my dad's genes.

Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

    I’m living Island Time today!

I started my morning by using the one of the original shaving products - Geo F. Trumper Coconut Oil Shaving Cream. As soon as I opened the sample, I was greeted by the rich, creamy scent of fresh coconuts. I tried to imagine I was on a pristine beach, the gentle waves whispering to me as I lathered up. I never used anything from this brand before, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. It performed far better than I was expecting, allowing my razor to glide effortlessly over my skin. Of course, I expected this to be like canned goo, and it was far better than canned goo. With the scent of coconuts with me throughout the shave, it felt like a tropical vacation in a jar.

I kept that vibe going with the splash: it was time for Island Time. This aftershave is nothing short of a bottle of paradise. The scent is a perfect blend of tropical fruits and a hint of ocean breeze, making me wish I was lounging in a hammock with a piña colada in hand. The splash gave a refreshing tingle that was as invigorating as a dip in the crystal-clear waters of a Caribbean island.

To complete my tropical transformation, I spritzed on some Clinique Lily of the Beach EdP. This fragrance is a bouquet of white lilies, warm sand, and a touch of sea salt. It’s like capturing the essence of a Hawaiian Lei at a beautiful beach resort. The scent lingered beautifully, keeping me in my tropical daydream all day long. The combination of these products left me smooth, refreshed, and smelling like an island paradise. After having zero expectations for Geo F Trumper, I’m really pleasantly surprised how this shave came together. 🏖️🪒🌴

Challenge: This is my first Lather Games. I’m having fun, but I’m out on this challenge. No thanks, team. I kind of like having hairy legs.

On a related note, I realized I forgot the #ROTY tag a couple days ago. Goddammit. I guess we know who’s NOT going to be Rookie of the Year.

Happy Sunday, beautiful people! Welcome to the sixteenth shave of the 2024 Lather Games. Today's theme is “Father’s Day” where we shave with a brand of lather older than we are.

I’m taking this full throttle and everything is in some way older than my decaying body. The brush handle is mid twentieth century, 1940s or 50s. The razor is the 1970-P2 109 Super Adjustable that I’m hoping for a better experience than yesterday. The USA made Personna have been around since 1963 - although, per Razor Emporium, AccuTec has lost the rights to the Personna trademark and the blades will be branded as AccuForge going forward. The lather, Cella Red has been around way longer than me - as the packaging proclaims it was established in 1899. My lather scoop, the stainless 1/4 teaspoon, is from Williams & Sonoma, established 1956. The “lather bowl” is a pre-war, made in Korea soup/cereal bowl that was originally owned by my grandparents and is the last surviving bowl from the set. Finally, the post shave is a frequent flyer, Afta by Mennen, a brand founded circa 1878.

Today’s daily challenge was to shave our legs, and since that is a shower activity took care of that first with a different set of hardware. Used the same Cella Red with the Yaqi Caramel & CaYuen for lather and my copper Karve CB with a Treet Falcon.

The Christopher Bradley seems made for shaving your body. Ever since I decided to try it on the back of my neck early spring, been using it every weekend to clean up. I have shaved some things and had one very slight nick once. And that was with the D plate - I find it crazy intuitive for shaving at weird angles with poor to no visibility. With summer here, even been keeping the pits clean. That has not extended to my legs. I’ve never shaved my legs before this.

The results are unfortunately not runway worthy. I am, if the video and pics yesterday didn’t give it away, nearsighted AF. Though I contorted myself into weird and uncomfortable positions to view things as best I could, alas, hairs escaped the smoothening. Been wearing shorts at work so I’ll find out if anyone likes staring at my legs 😂

The themed shave involves Cella, a soap that I appreciate the solid performance of, particularly versus the cost, but that I do not use because of the scent. I don’t like strong almond scent. Marzipan and the like quickly reaches blech levels with me. However, after three years the levels are acceptable, maybe even light, as the soap smell itself was quite noticeable when shaving my legs.

I have higher hopes for the razor today with a proper lather (yesterday’s F your face challenge is still fresh in my mind 😅) but expectations are lowish. I like proper blade clamping. Henson and Karve’s clamping is fantastic. These vintage TTO razors are flapping in the breeze relatively speaking 😉.

My relationship with my father is complicated, but his influences are here with this shave. The razor is, as best my memory serves, the long handled variant of the same razor he had in the medicine cabinet when I was growing up. He wasn’t using it by the time I remember - the man was hardcore in his cheap efficiency and had switched to disposables as far back as I remember. To this day his razor of choice is whatever disposable BJ’s has in bulk the cheapest. I tried the TTO once, and I did not care for the painful tugging that was some combo of canned foam, old blade, and me being clueless and never went back. It’s neat revisiting it all these years later with proper lather and skills and see what could have been. The post shave will always remind me of my dad. He did and still uses Afta and only Afta. To me, it is the smell of shaving and the stuff works as well as any of the $15-$25 balms. I doubt it will ever leave my den.

I am pleased that being able to use properly hydrated lather improved the experience of using the Super Adjustable. It is not replacing any of the horsemen, but today I was able to play with the remaining adjustable settings and actually tell something beyond they were different 😅, arrived at only 2 being preferable. It was usable on 9 but the blade feel was off the charts. At 2 it was comfortable with minor blade feel and still efficient enough. It will return on Frugal Friday as it’s the cheapest razor in the den.

    Enjoy the remaining weekend

C.O Bigelow claims the title of “oldest apothecary in America.” (1838). Proraso was founded in 1908. Definitely older than me. The cream I used today was made “exclusively by Proraso for C.O. Bigelow.” I’m not a Proraso diehard, but it does the job and I can appreciate the cooling , refreshing lather.

Today’s Challenge. Alright you weirdos- I leg shave everyday. I don’t have much else besides peach fuzz elsewhere , but i figured why not. Easy - though I stayed clear of my veins bc this is not how I plan to go out.

For the photo, this is a picture of the best boy ever, Neko, who sadly passed 8 months ago. He was also older than me (in dog years). I got this tattoo in his younger days bc I have always been obsessed with him and still am.

    Use of Theme Father’s Day**

Here in the States we take this day to celebrate Fatherhood and how much we appreciate dads. Not the human equivalent of pollinators, buzzing and flitting about from flower to flower, but the honest-to-goodness dads who put in the time to raise their kids. They may not be the best, but they try. They may not have had their own dad present as a role model, but they persevere.

My dad will be 89 next month and I got my first scare at the Maggard Meetup in April with regard to what we all know is coming. The reminder that our lives are ultimately not in our hands. He officially had a TIA that day, received a subsequent cancer diagnosis, but thankfully any progressing dementia has been ruled out. He still has some fight left in him, but it’s been stressful for us in the midst of his decline.

I celebrate dads today with Williams Mug which, until its recent demise, has been creating lasting lathers since 1840. It’s been a punching bag of late, but I appreciated the honest evaluation that u/WegianWarrior gave it three years ago. Today’s aftershave is a favorite of years gone by, Avon Spicy in a “World’s Greatest Dad” trophy decanter it predates a few of us here, myself excluded. Some of you won’t have a clue. For being over 40 years old, the scent is still quite present, but likely won’t carry like it did back in the day. I’ve also paired it with another vintage Avon product from 1993 in cologne version for today’s fragrant finish. Musk for Men is a light, musky fragrance some say is Adidas Active Bodies with musk oil. I don’t know about that, but it is a suitable musk for the summer months.

    Daily Challenge: Leg Day

As if last year’s Never Skip Leg Day didn’t even matter. Nothing I can probably do to top last year’s 7.2K views of my epic short except a spite shave. This video is not for the faint of heart

Have a lovely day and be kind to one another. I don’t really hate all of you…just acting like I do.) 😁

    2024-06-16 - Smooth

    • Lather: Maurer & Wirtz - Tabac (1845)
    • Post Shave: Lucky Tiger - Aspen (1935)
    • Fragrance: Creed - Aventus (1760!)
    • Razor: Gilette Tech (1964, this razor)
    • Brush: West Coast Shaving Two Tone (meh)

Unifying Theme: Older than me, and you can bet I was born after 1935.

Leg Day: Some of you guys are really opposed to this prospect. What kind of misogynistic, toxically-masculine ideas did your fathers instill into you?

Whatever. Leg-shaving is awesome and I don't know why it's been 11 months since I last did it. At least it makes the super airy feeling feel more exceptional. I very well may go back over them tomorrow, because I did not get as close as I would have liked.

(E: In my zeal, I overlooked the before/after part of the challenge, but it is—strictly speaking—in the video, even if it's not very clear. It went well, though I was reminded that that little ledge, being against the shower wall, is quite restrictive when doing the left leg. It occurs to me I would do well to stretch more; I figure I'd be a bit more flexible if I did this regularly.)

I think there's really something to using longer-handled razors for leg-shaves. Last year, I chose my longest one, because it's often said that that's useful. Today, I went with the Tech because of the day's theme even though it's shorter, plus I thought the Tech head would be mild enough, considering that I have a Travel Tech reserved for shaving the, uh... But I digress. Yeah, a longer handle would probably have been good.

    #FOF
The biggest problem I had with today's shave was with the fact that my nose was full of Tabac the whole time. I thought I was going to choke to death on powder. Lucky Tiger leans pretty heavily into powderiness, too, and of course I used a fair amount of that in order to get coverage.
You'd think that Creed would offer some relief, but I've come to determine that I do not care for Aventus, to the point that I'm kind of baffled that it has the reputation that it does. It's just so damn fruity, but still doesn't overcome the diaper-bag stench of Tabac.

Happy Father’s Day to all those out there today!

Daily Challenge: Nope! Viva La Revolution! As I said yesterday, I’m single parent ops this morning so it was hard enough to get just a face shave in much less trying to hack down the forest on my legs!

Daily Theme Justification: Well I was basing this off of the Maurer & Wirtz brand until u/djundjila dropped a knowledge bomb the other day! Since I can’t actually read his link, there is an argument that since M&W advertises it as one of their brands, it should count for either brand! But it doesn’t really matter since they aren’t a sponsor and I don’t plan on using Tabac this month. M&W was founded in 1845, SIR in 1969, both older than me!

Oh and I’m still waiting on my Sponsor points from the Gillette that I used on goop day. That obviously was a typo on the points page since they sponsored the whole month this year!

Relevant Post Shave & Frag: All are very green Fougère scents, Varen being the dankest, of the three but so beautiful! I also pulled out my oldest razor, a 1940’s Ranger Tech and my #OLDWORLD Brush!

I look forward to this shave every single year. I was sad when I didn't have an excuse to pull it out during last years July games. Nearly every part of this shave, with the exception of the knot in the handle, blade, and frag, belonged to my grandpa. As I've talked about plenty of times before, I was lucky enough to end up with quite a bit of shaving stuff when I asked my grandma if she still had my grandpa's old razor, which really is where my wet shaving journey truely began. I'm also always surprised at just how awesome this 60+ year old soap performs. It easily crushes any modern mass produced shaving soap/cream/gel in performance. It also still has a pleasant, though light scent when lathered despite sitting open for all those years. If you have the opportunity to try some old Old Spice or any other old soaps, definitely do it.

For Father's Day, not only is the lather company I'm using older than me, but every item in today's shave is older than me (80's baby for clarity)

First, the lather; Cyril R. Salter was founded in 1949. And the scent is incredible, it's super peaty. I haven't tried Mike's Vetiver, but it's the best Vetiver I've whiffed.

The razor and blade; both Gillette which was founded in 1901.

Simpson was founded in London in 1919.

Myrsol was founded in Barcelona in the early 1940's. An odd time to found an aftershave company given the geopolitical events at the time.

And finally, Floris, the oldest company in my sotd, which was founded in 1730.

Happy Father's Day to all, and good luck to those scraping lather off their legs today!

What is left of my 1 kg block of Cella resides in this airtight container, and I pull some out as needed for my shave needs. It works decently well when paired with the Omega boar brush, which is now soft and well worn in after many shaves. The shave was surprisingly smooth and comfortable, with minimal irritation and decent cushion. Now that my shave game is better I may have to revisit these more spartan soaps and give them a second chance more often.

The little furball likes to play with my boar brush, and attacked it with reckless abandon when I was trying to get the photo set up. Bad kitty!

No Challenge today, I like my legs as they are. I did help female friend's legs with a DE, but that was a while back...

I'm really loving this Zenith Badger so far. Good flow through even though it feels quite dense, pleasant scritch and backbone. I might have to come to terms with me being too much of a philistine to fully appreciate expensive knoots, because this feels great and I'm not sure the my B3 and B16 are better! Let's see if the break-in process changes my mind.

Theme: D.R. Harris was founded in 1790, so this definitely qualifies, even recursively for several generations of fathers.

Relevant post & frag: Arlington is a typical classic cologne scent, aromatic citrus. This scent category was created in 1709 when Johann Maria Farina recreated the fragrance of Italian spring. Well it is still spring for a few days and do you know what else is in Italy? Rome is, and that's where Roman Spice is from! "Roman Spice" is almost certainly a reference to silphium (°), the spice used in ancient Roman cuisine that was so delicious that with the rise of the Roman Empire, Roman purchasing power became strong enough to create the economic conditions in which the plant it's produced from was systematically overharvested in the entire Mediterranean region. The plant is now extinct like -- you guessed it -- the Dodo. Boom.

    Challenge: not this year.

    2024-06-16 Father's Day

    Today's Theme:

But is it older than you? Today I went old school. I broke out an old scuttle, dropped the Williams (1840) puck in, lathered with my Rubberset "Plastiset", and settled up matters using part of a tube of Maria Teresa & Proenca "444".

...and yes the Williams shave soap has a few more years upon this blue marble than I do. Believe it...or not! (I really can't think of that phrase in any other voice than that of Jack Palance's)

Yes, that was a full 14:43 of Jack Palance saying "Believe it, or not!"

    Today's Challenge:

No, I am not lazy. The real reason is I fight with eczema a bit and while it has been kind to my face and even my neck. Up there it ususally allows me to get away with anything. The eczema does however, bother me on my hands and legs so I am leaving the legs out of it. So I will follow along with u/Priusaurus and a few others today.

While I understand the purpose of today’s challenge is for us to appreciate the art of leg shaving, I am going to have to refuse to take part this year. I respect the leg shave especially after I mangled my legs last year. But given it is Father’s Day I refuse to take part out of respect for my own legs.

Do you not respect the men and women of your local fire department? Does that mean once a year you should run into a burning building to show your respect? Absolutely not. In fact, rule 3.4 of the lather games explicitly states that you will be disqualified if you ‘engage in behavior during your shave that could have caused grievous harm to yourself or others’.

By participating in leg day I would be disqualifying myself.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers!

I haven't cracked this ceramic Tabac lid in ages, but today's theme narrowed my options to products from before the '80s, and I thought my stinky old friend might pair nicely with some vintage-styled fougères. It did.

More importantly, what a lather! I forgot how impressive the performance of the old tallow base is; the slickness and protection are at least as good as my favorite S-Tier artisan bases, even if Tabac is a bit more drying. Really excellent stuff.

With a house full of company, Father's Day, and recording a podcast I was unable to shave my legs today.

However, in keeping with the spirit of the challenge, I will wear jeans to cover my unshaven legs, even though it's 95 degrees outside, because that's what u/ktturtlesue would have to do.

    It's a shitty double standard.

For scents today, in honor of Father's Day I let my daughter choose. She picked the Almond TOBS instead of the original, and then anything lavender is always her pick.

    • Post Shave: Long Rifle Soap Co. – 1776 – Tonic
    • Fragrance: Olympic Orchids – Dev #2: The Main Act – Parfum

It may be Father’s Day, but this shave is much more akin to how my mother probably shaves. Proraso was founded in 1908, nearly ninety years before I was born, and almost a half-century before my Dad was born. It’s not what my Dad shaves with, though. Last I checked, he shaves in the shower, with Irish Spring soap and a 3-blade cartridge, though he used to use Bic disposables. I think he probably taught me how to shave, but if he did, I don’t remember it. That might be related to why I started growing and keeping a beard at the age of 14.

Today’s shave is inspired by my father in a different way. The soap keeps with the theme, but this old puck smells vague, clean, and soapy. Not quite the Irish Spring my father uses, but it has the same vibe. 1776, in addition to the mahogany scent that reminds me of school field trips to Lexington & Concord, has a tobacco leaf aspect that reminds me of the pipe my Dad used to smoke on special occasions, particularly while camping in Vermont every summer (until my parents split). The cigarettes he and my Mom smoked were abhorrent and not a smell I romanticize, but the scent of dried pipe tobacco in his leather bag is a magical fragrance – the scent of safety, youth, and a more carefree time of my life. Dev 2 represents the other thing I associate most with my father – the Catholic Church, which we devotedly attended every Sunday with exceptions only made for significant illness. This parfum of course is meant to evoke our more animalistic intentions (and how could it not, with such deep, resinous seduction), but the liturgical incense note is unmistakable, harkening to Holy Thursday mass and others, where incense would remind us of the solemnity of the occasion. #FOF

Shaving my legs up to my nethers took so damn long. It’s not like I wasn’t warned, but I think the whole process took me nearly two hours. The hair clogged up the razor constantly, but I was too nervous to use something like the Ever Ready 1912 that might not have clogged so quickly. My body hair is pretty dark, pretty thick, and my legs are pretty long. But Mama didn’t raise a quitter, so I stuck with it. It looks weird and I know it’s going to itch like hell, but we did it, folks. Unlike some, I’m not phoning it in (*cough cough*, u/Priusaurus).

    Edit: fixed broken link

OK, so you whippersnappers have a clear advantage in this challenge. The only soap I have where the product's introduction predates me is Old Spice. I have already used that as (what everyone would agree) the optimal choice for Ahoy! day. And, I want to use the Stank® this month. While Tabac was introduced to the world a few years after I was, Mäurer and Wirtz was established long before. So I've got that going for me ... which is nice.

My dad died 3 days before the games started, it was unexpected and we were very close. I was dreading today. Having it be leg day and getting to distract myself with the antics has been an incredible gift. For all those who did the silly thing and shaved their legs I want you to know it made a difficult day easier.

June 16, 2024 – Making my father proud – but not with this

    • Brush: Century – Pure Bristle
    • Razor: Ever Ready 1912
    • Lather: Proraso – Green Tea & Oat

Theme: Proraso has been around since before my dad was born and it smells like TV static. Went with an old brush, and old razor and an old mug as well. Mug was my dad’s. He HATED shaving, but he always shaved with a brush and mug set when I was kid. I inherited them (stole them) when I started wet shaving. He had to take up shaving again in the last 7 months as he needed frequent heart biopsy that went through his neck. I made him smell my entire collection to pick the soaps he wanted to use. Stirling Gatlinburg ended up being his choice.

Challenge: I thought somewhere it said leg shavers should shave arms but when I went and looked it didn’t say anything about it. For before and after purposes the right leg is before and the left leg is after. I normally don’t shave my legs daily and menthol day disrupted my careful quadrant rotation I use to keep from getting irritated during the games.

Happy Father’s Day! Or in my case, you are not the father. Today, every brand is older than me, and that is the linking factor, including hardware. We have Proraso (1908), Clubman Pinaud (1810), TOBS (1854), Gillette (1901), and Zenith (1902).

As for #FOF, the link today was more on age, but we’ll chat a bit anyway. Proraso green is a fairly light eucalyptus and menthol. Lilac vegetal is severely lacking in the lilacs, oh my god, it’s so horrible. It’s like if the worst tasting medicine had a scent, and you mixed that with a used urinal cake, then sprinkled with baby powder to try and cover the stench. Jermyn street is a fresh and modern “Cologne like” fougere. Pretty heavy on the citrus.

As for our #PHOTOCONTEST, we went with DIY. It seemed fitting for the Father’s Day theme today. My dad was not much of a DIYer, but that’s ok, his strengths were elsewhere. But as a relatively new homeowner myself, we got some tools to try and do basic stuff because some things are just crazy expensive. A few triumphs. I’ve successfully fixed the AC in my old, made cornhole boards, fixed our washer, and made a compost bin.

As for today’s challenge, ain’t happening. Also, those old types have serious blade feel. I’m typing this from the airport (sorry Mr Miasma, didn’t shave here) and no way was leg shave going down right before vacation.

    • Razor: Gillette flare-tip superspeed w/ Treet platinum

Old stuff eh? Ok so this brush is a vintage Surrey handle, which was expertly restored by u/freddiep318ti, and I think the blue looks awesome with the cashmere knot.

The vintage Colgate puck is in an Old Spice mug that is the late 50’s style. I believe it’s considered the “early glass mug 05.” I eventually need to get around to getting one of the red caps for the mug.

The superspeed isn’t my oldest razor, but it was loaded up and ready to go so it fit the bill. It’s a L1 date code, which puts it at Q1 of ‘66.

And then according to the interwebs Skin Bracer was launched in 1931. It really is a nice scent, probably my favorite of the “drugstore” brands. Lucky Tiger’s website has them starting in the 20’s and then becoming an official brand & company in ‘35. Older than I thought!

Went with Tabac today. Maurer & Wirtz is older than all of us so was a pretty easy choice. Yup another dickhole, but if you are gonna stank, you might as well stank the stankiest one can stank.

I have to admit, I like the scent of the soap and the frag. The aftershave reminds me of whatever air freshener/cleaner/bug spray that you smell when you walk into a cheap motel anywhere up and down I95. For my Jersey peeps, the motels up and down Rt. 1 from Elizabeth to New Brunswick. Think the Loop Inn back in the 80’s and 90’s or Lee’s in Edison.

Today’s challenge is a no go for me. I was going to do it, but it’s going to be in the 90’s all week and I wear jeans for work with high socks and boots. I don’t feel like dealing with any irritation or nicks/cuts.

Photo Contest Theme Birds Why birds? Because Tabac aftershave is just that. For the birds.

June 16, 2024 – Manly Men (Tight Tights!)

    • Blade: whatever comes in a bic
    • Lather: Barbasol – Classic Shaving Cream, Brushless Cream
    • Post Shave: Clubman Pinaud – Citrus Musk
    • Fragrance: Acquia de Parma – Colonia

Happy Father’s Day to all those who are dads.

Today’s shave is old brands. Because all dads are old I guess? (I know I feel old sometimes.) Coming up with old brands can be hard in this hobby because we all love new! Nevertheless, I’m pulling out my Barbersol 1919 for today. It’s a passible shave, but the cremo was better to be honest. Now a Giilette Razor would obviously qualify for “older than me.” But I want to go with an iconic Bic disposable. Why? Well, this shave is a bit of a tribute to my dad.

See, I mentioned before dad taught me to shave with dial soap and a Bic razor. It was horrible. Dial soap isn’t even a shave cream (and thus ineligible for LG or I’d use it today.) Dad was…poorly trained in the arts of self-grooming. So the bic is for him. But also the Barbersol. See, in the last decade or so, dad has upgraded to canned Babersol foam. Still the Bic razors though. Now I suppose it’s better than dial, but one day I’ll convince him to try one of my razors. Maybe the injector once I get it back from u/hugbckt. (Since it’s the closest to a Bic). Or you know what, he can keep the bic, but maybe I’ll get him some good soap and a brush and he can at least get a decent non-drying lather. Chances I get him to shave his legs…well non-zero actually because I think he has knee surgery coming up.

For #fof I cannot honor dad here. You think a guy who uses dial soap has any splash or cologne? Nope. But I choose brands that are also older than me. Clubman, in citrus musk form to play off the citrus in the barbersol, and Acqua di Parma – Colonna, because I got it from my wife in a small travel kit and it has a note that compliments the citrus musk all over my legs. I had never smelled it before, but it puts the cap on this.

For #photocontest, let’s go black and white. Like old black and white films. Yes, with the yellow razor it makes no sense, but neither does any of this month. Let’s talk about the challenge. I had originally planned this as a shave in honor of my dad (as the writeup shows). So now it’s a leg shave in honor of him I guess.

The challenge came with zero warning, worth 0.2 pts (unlike last year where it was worth 1). I suspect (and conversation on the Saturday DQ thread and discord support the idea) that most people are going to skip it for a variety of reasons. Only the super committed to completing every challenge will stick it out. I understand the idea behind springing it on us last minute, alas there is no bonus point for completing every challenge. And oversight I suggest is rectified next year. I could probably skip it, I’m so far behind in my target at this point I doubt it matters. But this is not about points. It’s about the love of the game. Plus, I promised u/newtothethis at least one leg shave this month and that I would shave on leg day. Now the planned leg shave is later in the calendar, but she’s doing the no scrub list today. I don’t intend to let her down because my dad taught me to keep my promises. So she gets two from me. Now a lot of people will try to tell you that they’re protesting should count for something, but meh. Planned shenanigans are planned, sometime rehashes of last year. Those are the easy points I suppose (judges seem to love it). You plan months in advance and execute something. As my father would say “Adapt. Improvise. Overcome.” My son threw a fit this morning, I have to cut the lawn, then I have to go out with family. Still, I made time for the challenge. Is that Legendary? Apparently for this year’s crop it is. None of y’all can adapt. Well I did. And I did fabulous.

Before pics. Lessons were learned from last year and so I knocked the growth down with a trimmer/clippers first to make it go easier. After Pics. Now then I’m off to celebrate Father’s Day with my family. They may or may not notice my smooth legs. If they do, I don’t have to explain myself. They already know I’m crazy.

SOAP - Gillette is old! Like super old! So does that makes their shaving gel any good? FAT NOOPE! It’s awful and then some. I mean there is no hydrating your skin with a foamy gel filled with chemicals. But the brand label is old and today OLD is Theme! So I am pairing the rest of my set with old like Brut which is what my father used to use! What does it smell like? Well it smells like the color!!! Green. I don’t think you could make anything that would literally smell like a color and they nailed it. Green and old.

RAZOR - Another oldie from the 1950’s TTO. Shaves like a hot knife on butter.. clean as a whistle….

THE THEME - Why leg day on FATHER’s DAY?? Why??? Well this is not my first rodeo but right when it’s hot and sticky and humid! Okay pre shave and I set myself up HERE! And went to work. I wear my shorts low so not a big deal there. Thank goodness this was a one man show cause let’s say if we had to shave our backs then another person would have to get involved and logistics would be tricky. HINT…HINT… maybe next year who knows. FINAL RESULT!!

Yeah that was not fun. Razor kept getting clogged and took forever. Okay ready for the day so my kids can make fun of me all day for shaving my legs! Happy freaking Father’s Day!

    Today’s theme:

Every brand used predates me. I was born in 1970. Williams soap started in 1840 and went out of production around 2022. Thayers started making their products in 1847. King Camp Gillette first started work on his patented safety razor in 1895, but the company was incorporated in 1901. Just like cartridges today, the business used safety razors to sell blades. The Gillette Techs come later being introduced in 1939. This one has notched cap so manufactured likely between 1964 and 1973. There is no date code that I can see, just Gillette Made in England under the plate. P4 would be my birthday razor. Semogue brushes started being made in 1954 in Portugal. The one would fit the OLDWORLD tag, but I finished my scavenger hut a few days ago. Last the youngest company represented start in 1967, Ralph Lauren. This cologne was introduced in 1978, but the company at least started before 1970. So I kept it pretty old school today.

I had thought about going vintage lady razors. I picked up this vintage Curvfit Razor -for personal daintiness. It had two blades in that tuck, but both had rust along the edge. I didn’t trust it enough, nor want to test the tetanus booster I got earlier this year. From the drawings on the box and instructions, it looks more intended for axillary depilation. I also had a couple other vintages I could try, like my Wilkinson Sword Empire 7-Day Razor, or Ever Ready Shovelhead 1924.,:but while the Wilkinson is worth 2-3 hashtags (7 day, non-disposable, and carbon steel safety), it is close to stock. The strop is still wrapped in waxed paper, but it took a hard bump sometime and the bakelite blade organizer is broken near the hinge. It is a pretty amazing little razor though. Kind of wanted to show that at the same time men were being sold razors like the Empire, women were marketed that gimmicky Curvfit or the Kewtie. I think Curvfit was sold from the 1930s to the 1950s. This one looks to be post war. The packaging for the earlier ones is more Art Deco.

    Leg Day:

This is the second goofiest challenge presented so far (tomorrow tops it). I certainly did shave my legs last year, and due to some circulation issues, didn’t really need to shave again. I never had very hairy legs, and it is pretty fine and blond or light brown, but several years ago, most of the hair below the knee went away. Even the wiry ones on my big toe. There is still some there, but it is very faint and hard to get in a photo. To meet this challenge, I needed to shave all the way up. So I made a lather in my vintage Old Spice Mug. It was pretty dry and I had to work more water into it, but it just kept drying out in the mug. Dry lather in pic 1, but better not great in pic 2. After leg lathering to kept from loading more lather and drying up, I started to shave. Not safe for lunch. As you can see, I found some hairs to shave. I ended up redoing the lather several times. This Williams soap just starts to go away after a bit. I finally finished up smoothing my legs.Just one pass took longer than my normal shave routine. Lots of Thayers ~~Facial~~ Leg Toner to sooth the dry itchiness this left.

    Feats of Fragrance:

Ok Williams Mug Soap has the scent of soap. That’s it, just soap. Starting with an empty palette today. To keep my vintage vibe going, my choices were Thayers, Ice Blue Aqua Velva, or Tabac. I didn’t want the Ice Blue on my legs, but it was also made by Williams, or bought by Williams in the 1920s. I used Tabac for soap yesterday, but not the lotion. It would have been ok. With Leg Day, the floral punch of Rose Petal just felt like it fit better. No old man stank was going on these dainty legs. Rose is a strange scent to me. In my head, rose scents used are just flower scented. I never think that it really is what roses smell like. Probably because modern roses used for bouquets have been hybridized for the straighter stems and tighter flowers, but lost most of the scent. Old school big blossom roses I guess still have the scent, but I’m not often around them. Still this Thayers is a nice clean floral. That left my choices for fragrance today. Trying to keep to a brand/company before 1970 left all of the artisan scents I have off the table. I could have used another variety of Tabac - Original EdT, Man Gravity, Man Silver, or Craftsman, but they didn’t feel right. Today is Father’s Day, and there was one choice for me that fit. Last year for my birthday, my daughter (and wife) gave me this enormous bottle of Polo Cologne Intense. It is a citrus/woody scent with Grapefruit, Sage, and Patchouli as the main notes list on the Ralph Lauren site, but Fragrantica is a bit more detailed adding basil and mint to the top notes, violet leaf and thyme into the middle, with bottom notes ambroxan & vetiver. Described as an aromatic fougere, it has been a pretty refreshing scent for today. Very clean and green for a leisurely brunch. Now I need a nap.

Nice afternoon father’s day shave. My son surprised me by ordering a kamisori for me off eBay. Excited to try it when it arrives. Tabac is way older than me, as is this razor. Tabac is also easy to later and super slick great for a straight shave. I’m glad I smell more like Rebelle now though, even though I like the tabac stank.

    • Blade: Gillette - Nacet
    • Lather: Proraso - Eucalyptus Oil & Menthol Shaving Cream
    • Post Shave: Clubman - After Shave Lotion

Today's Theme: Believe it or not, I was born after 1908, so Proraso was a perfect choice for today. I’ve been using it a decent amount for the Lather Games and I’ve been enjoying it a lot.

As for Father’s Day, my dad passed about 2 and half years ago. He had chronic health issues related to the military and his own personal choices (e.g. smoking). When I was growing up, as most teenagers do, start to become annoyed with their parents because my dad wasn’t perfect, but nobody is.

As his health started to decline over the last year of his life, I really started to try and make an honest effort to be closer to him. We had a vacation planned to California, but his health landed him in the ER for a couple days. Miraculously, he got good enough to meet us out from the Midwest and we got to visit Yosemite together. This was kind of a defining moment for us because we both kind of opened up a little bit to each other, which neither of us were accustomed to.

Fast forward 8 months, I’m leaving for class in the morning and he wishes me a happy birthday as I walk out the door. He could hardly breathe, but he still managed to tell me happy birthday. Later that day, he was admitted to the hospital and succumbed to his cancer a couple weeks later. He was intubated, so the happy birthday wish was the last thing I ever heard him say. A testament to a father’s love in spite of his own acute troubles.

I hope all the dads, step dads, grandpas, male legal guardians, and fatherly figures all get celebrated duly today. I’ve learned a lot about my dad after his death and he was a much better man than I ever knew. He had his own issues but he always did his best to take care of my siblings, his grandchildren, and I. Remember to hug the men in your life while you still can, this shit goes by much too fast.

    Today's Challenge: No thanks.

I had three choices today, but went with the one I’m least likely to use under any other circumstances, this awful cream from ODFPSMN.

I purchased it when I visited Florence 7 years ago or so. I had the pleasure of visiting OFDPSMN HQ and I gotta tell you it was a real pleasure. This place is spectacular, it’s almost otherworldly in how fancy and old world it is. Rather than me trying to explain, here’s some pictures:

    https://imgur.com/a/V7pj7

I picked up an aftershave and cream while there and was psyched to try out this old school shit.

Well, shit it is. The aftershave is the most face unfriendly stuff I’ve ever used. You might as well throw rubbing alcohol on your face.

And the soap? Supposedly scented with Tabacco Toscano (which would be a plus, their frags are great!), it really smelled like an eucalyptus bomb that has finally faded after 7 years and I can finally smell the last hints of Tabacco Toscano coming through.

The soap’s performance is decidedly mid. Not the worst, but absolutely demolished by any artisan base today.

As for the challenge today? Have fun with that.

Silver Blue removed the first layer of skin, as it always does, but got a nice shave despite the bloodloss. One day I’ll make it through this pack of Silver Blues but I’d rather stick to Nacets.

Happy Father's Day to the dads out there. Today's shave was one I was looking forward to, as Tabac has grown on me quite a lot since my first ever Tabac shave on Day 1 of last year's Lather Games. I find the scent quite pleasant, and the shave stick is fun to use. All of the hardware and software used in my shave today are from brands older than I am. I had to sacrifice any connection between the software to accomplish this, however, because Sauvage and Tabac don't really have anything in common besides predating yours truly.

And sorry, I didn't shave my legs. Scrub.

Recently bought some Stetson at my local Walmart. Not sure if it came out the same time as the fragrance but to my knowledge they both smell exactly the same so I’m going with it. I like it, a lot. Lightly sweet, powdery. Doesn’t really give a cowboy vibe to me but definitely masculine.

Challenge: For not being that hairy anywhere else... My legs are hairy AF. I have shaved them before but have required the use of hair clippers :(. Not happening with a razor today.

But with todays challenge I suppose one could.

Happy Fathers day! As we are moving back to the west US, I am looking forward to finally making it to a Dodgers game with my dad. We have a shared passion for the game and seemingly every time we talk, baseball becomes part of the conversation. I have all brands older than me today. MWF from the 1930s, zenith from the 1900s, Schick from the 1920s, and House of Mammoth from historic ice age times as the name implies (how else would scents like Shire be possible, which existed before the reign of man). The scent from MWF is subtle and old timey. Some of the best descriptors I could put to it is clean, fresh, and soapy. Some would maybe say laundry sheets too. It’s a timeless scent. I think it is most reminiscent of powder, classic clean powder. Leading me to remember the scent as I once did. Baby shampoo. My mother ran a daycare from our house growing up so I encountered the scent a lot. It’s what you can almost smell in those 1980s photos of a baby on a clean blanket, looking like a Gerber model. Coincidentally I am reminded of this on Father’s Day, which I will get to be a part of next year with an expecting wife. So to make Father’s Day even more real, I decided to use a noble otter rawr brick in the shower today. Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers (and those soon to be).

DAY 16 LATHER GAMES! HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

    • Prep: Water

    • Blade: Valet
    • Lather: Arko - Shaving soap stick

    • Fragrance: Dior - Fahrenheit

Happy father's day to everyone! Love you dad, thanks for being there for me!!

Now for today's shave, EVERYTHING in it is older than I am!

The Valet Autostrop, alongside with the Soluna, will definitely be one of my top contenders for "Retro July"(a shaving event we made in the Bulgarian FB group). What makes it interesting is that I have 10 carbon Feather blades, each one honed by a friend(that has been honing for 35 years and is a JNAT nut) on a different stones. So I think exploring how the different edges of the blades perform throughout the month of July will be exciting. I decided to do a shave with a vintage Valet blade, also honed on a stone(don't remember the name of it atm, it's written on the piece of paper of the blade), it performed quite well and gave me a smooth shave, although depth could have been better, it was a near ideal BBS.

Arko! Urinary puck? Naaaaah. Smell of childhood turking soap(DURU)? YUP! I like Akro, was a bit skeptical in the beginning, but as soon as I tried it I changed my mind and never looked back. Scent is perfectly ok, performance is great! Cheap, good lather, great longevity!

Tabac.... I still haven't used Tabac shaving soap, and it's probably cause of the smell. It's not that it's repulsive I just really dislike it. Tabac smells like an old soviet lady with an old leather bag that has had cheap perfume spilled inside of the bag many times... It's no for me dawg.

Shaves like these sometimes make me question WHY, did I purchase all that I have purchased, then I remember of course, WHY, but once again it proves that some of these really old soap manufacturers are just that darn good and that you can't beat consistency!

    Daily Challenge

Now, this year I had to ask up until where should I shave both my legs, cause last year up to the knees was good, but was told that this year it's almost the whole leg, well as much as is needed to wear shorts and not see hair. That was a bit too much for me and I decided not to do it.

Little side track but very important. I know this is "See how the other half lives/shaves", but I don't need to shave my legs to understand that, furthermore I have done that already in previous years I know what it takes and I do appreciate what the ladies do. While we're on the topic of what ladies do, feminine beauty and standards are crazy high to maintain. Now what's important to know here, is that everytime I've had a girlfriend after the first 1-2 months when she gasps and says "Oh no I forgot to shave my legs", I tell her "I like you not because you shave your legs, but for who you are, I know how hard it is to maintain your beauty and believe me I'm ok if you have hairy legs, doesn't bother me a bit". After that conversation I get the biggest smile and hug back at me! So my appreciation of women is that I'm ok if they don't have the time to keep something maintaned or "perfect". Life is life, love is love.

Well don't think I didn't do anything stupid, then it wouldn't be interesting. I had thoughs of making the Daily challenge part of my post of how I shaved my third leg, but it seemed too boring, obvious. So I opted for another idea. Do you see this guy? Now I'm a fairly hairy dude, so just imagine the area of what those boxer briefs cover is shaved. That's right I shaved myself some boxer briefs, or at least I shaped it like that. Much better than shaving one leg up to the knee. Sadly I cannot share pics, cause of NSFW(A)(Not safe for work(anyone).

Ah Cella since 1899, one of the first shaving soaps I used. I love the scent, I still can't find an aftershave that is quite the same, and I have tried many. Some are close, but not quite there. Nice shave today except the leg shave! I thought I would mix the old with the new and used a Proof Whiskey Razor. First time using it and it went well paired with half a Lord Platinum blade.

Today's Challenge: I kept asking myself why?! I was worried my wife would come in while I was shaving. I rushed. Thankfully my leg hair has gotten less with age. Here is the before picture: https://imgur.com/a/xq0GD8R

I went to town lightly lathering and then shaving. The pivoting head on the Whiskey razor helped. After photo: https://imgur.com/a/4S01YSB Now I have legs Joe Namath would be envious of. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHia0cvW9Ho

Still using a different blade, brush, razor, aftershave and soap brand every day!

What is old stays old. Cella has been around for like 400 years. This stuff has seen it all—from the rise and fall of empires to internet shaving competitions. Cella in shave dens everywhere for over a century, enduring world wars, disco fever, and the questionable hairstyles of the 80s and 90s. Using Cella is like stepping back in time partaking in a centuries-old ritual, connecting you with a lineage of shavers who probably did and thought a lot of fucked up stuff. But, it’s best not to dwell on that because we’ve come a long way since then! Cella is the granddaddy of shaving soaps, proving that some classics never go out of style.

What do I pair a classic like Cella with? I decided on Boonana because both are a little sweet. Cella is like Almond Biscotti and Boonana reminds me of Banana Bread. Thanks to u/Priusaurus, we’ve learned no matter how good your lather smells, I know it won’t taste good. But I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t still a big part of me that would love to take a big bite of Boonana. The #FOF is simple today: smelling like delicious baked goods.

Challenge: Ugh…. Should I do it? Should I do it? Ughhhhh… WHY IS THIS A CHALLENGE?????

Barely had enough soap to cover it, but I managed. Last year, I was kind of intrigued at this challenge and had time to mentally prepare. This year, I honestly was debating whether or not to participate. But we gotta go all out for the Lather Games!

BTW - Just because I shaved my legs, I assume I'm still supposed to spray the frag on my neck? Or does the frag go on my legs too??? Maybe I'll go back and spray my legs just to be sure.

In honor of “Father’s Day”… My Top 5 TV Dads of All-Time:

(Editors note: If I were to make this list 10 years ago, Bill Cosby would have easily been #1. But we’ve learned a little bit since then, thus he will get NO credit on my list. I’m sure he’s heartbroken.)

5.) Al Bundy – My mom didn’t allow me to watch Married with Children growing up, but I’ve since watched enough to know that Al Bundy is great dad who did his best to take care of his family. Sure, maybe he’s a little rough around the edges, but aren’t we all?

4.) Danny Tanner – Never met a problem that couldn’t be solved in 22 minutes.

3.) Mike Brady – Life could not have been easy as a closeted gay man in the 1970s, but that didn’t stop Richard Reid from being the gold standard of TV dads.

2.) Carl Winslow – Imagine being a cop and going to work every day, then coming home and having this weirdo neighbor kid always hanging around, creeping on your daughter? Carl took it all in stride.

1.) Phil Dunphy – The perfect balance of humor, wit, acceptance, and love made him a perfect TV dad. Danny Tanner walked so Phil Dunphy could run.

Oof. I just lost my entire write up with a slip of the finger. Newly restored brush from my Great Grandfather that was handed down to me by my father. No idea on the date or brand but my Great Grandfather fled the Soviet’s from Lviv after the revolution, so I’m sure it fits the brief.

SOTD photo is actually inaccurate, used clubman because I like to save the SMN splash for special occasions.

We may have been at odds for many years but I love my father and am grateful I was able to speak to him today.

Pinaud is one of the GOATs. Doubly so Clubman. It's such a staple in barbershops that it almost sets the bar for barbershop scents. Musk, lemon, and powder. Classic and clean. The performance of the soap is meh, but it definitely works and is easy to build. The scent of the soap is a lot different than the post shave.

Busy day today, however, and I barely had time to get this shave in, much less my legs. Happy Father's Day to everyone, though! I hope your day was good and full of delicious food.

    June 16, 2024 - call me pagliacci

    • Brush: Maggard Razors 30mm Black and White Synthetic
    • Razor: Henkotsu Kamisori (traditional right hand grind)
    • Lather: Mauer and Wirtz - Tabac
    • Post Shave: Chicago Grooming Co. - AG 1889
    • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - Yesterday Haze

I am 32 years old, and yet somehow I let you people convince me to be your on demand clown, catering to your every shaving whim. Well, I hope you're happy with what I have for you today, because I am actually quite happy with how this turned out.

This tub of Tabac is relatively new to me, this is only my third or fourth time using it. This stuff lathers so easily. The lather is incredibly consistent. It's very slick, and that comes with plenty of residual slickness. It's not really the most cushion-y in the world, but that is ok in my book considering how slick this stuff is. The scent is growing on me. It definitely smells like an old folks home, but I'm ok with that considering how good the shave is.

I paired it with AG 1889, because the last time I wore that splash to work a student asked why my classroom smelled like her retired dad's office. Old goes with old. Yesterday Haze rounds out the scent profile, bringing some much needed freshness with still just a little bit of that dank fruitiness that makes you wonder if you spent all of yesterday picking fruit. Everything here calls out the old in some way.

Now. The clown in the room. Me. I shaved my legs because the king just couldn't get enough of having me jump around like his little puppet catering to his every whim and fancy. And yes, you are reading that correctly: I used my kamisori to do it. It actually worked really, really well. (None of the following images contain blood or nsfw content, just legs.)

I started with these, the standard hairy, white guy legs. Then got started with the kami. You know that feeling when you finally use a tool the way it was intended? That's exactly how I felt this entire shave. I'm not saying that the kamisori is intended to shave legs, but the whole point of this style of razor is to shave other people. When I've used it to shave my own face it's incredibly awkward. I can't get the skin taut enough, the angles are bad, it skips around instead of cutting. There was none of that here. Every angle was perfect (even the backs of my knees); keeping the skin taut was a breeze so the razor glides absolutely perfectly (no tugging, skipping, or jumping here); and there was never that feeling of "man, I wish I was using something else to do this" like I get every other time I've shaved my legs. Here are the results of the left leg, and here are the results of the right leg. Did I miss a few spots? Sure. Do I feel like I never want to do this again (like I bemoaned last year)? No. This shave actually makes me want to try this again. This was a good experience, and it makes me so mad that I had to be y'all's dancing clown to get that.

Photo contest picture is linked in the title. Theme is The Elements: Air. There is both Air in the picture, and so much more air around my legs now that there is no hair. I'm taking the easy option here. Sue me. #photocontest

Video Evidence, it's like 20 seconds, of the straight leg shave. Please disregard the heavy breathing.

    June 16, 2024 – LG24 Day 16 - Father's Day

Daily Theme & Relevant Post/Frag: I was born in 1963. Tabac, the brand, was launched in 1959 and its parent company, Mäurer & Wirtz, was founded in 1854. Older than me theme met. On the relevant front, I trick holed the post and frag, thus all software used today comes from companies older than me.

Keeping with the older than me theme, the razor and blade are made by Gillette. Gillette, the brand, was founded in 1901, and its parent company, Procter & Gamble, was founded in 1837. The brush is a little more complicated but still meets the spirit of the older than me theme. The 506U is branded RazoRock (which was founded in 2009, but the brush is white-label manufactured by Zenith. The Zenith brand is owned by Pennellificio Pandolfo, whose origins date back to 1902.

The Slim Adjustable brings back fond memories of my Dad. The Adjustable was his razor of choice throughout my childhood. Some of my earliest memories are of watching Dad shave with his Slim. Dad's slim has disappeared, but I got this reconditioned Slim in his honor, and it has a date code (I2) which alignes with my birth quarter.

Daily Challenge & Shave: Today's challenge is Leg Day, and its purpose is to find out how the other side lives. While some may question the placement of leg day on Father's Day, the concept itself is an honorable one. It is not my place to question why some participants chose to forgo today's leg shaving challenge, but I am of the belief that those who passed on leg day missed an opportunity to better understand the challenges leg shaving practitioners face every time they do so. Here is my leg shave.

    • Brush: Vulfix Butterscotch Oumo Badger
    • Razor: Gillette Black Beauty T3 #ADJUSTABLE
    • Blade: Wizamet (30)
    • Lather: Haslinger - Schafmilch
    • Post Shave: Aqua Velva - Musk
    • Fragrance: Chanel - Antaeus

Theme: all software brands used are older than me: Haslinger dates back to 1890 according to The Razor Company. Aqua Velva was trademarked in 1917. Chanel’s first fragrance, No. 5, was launched in 1921. I believe the hardware is older than me.

Challenge: Leg day! It was tough finding time to get this in, but I did it. Pre-shave left leg and right leg. Post-shave [left leg] (https://imgur.com/sYEafO6) and [right leg] (https://imgur.com/BsPHVcO). I know the photo edits look weird, but the carpet doesn't look great.

There’s not much to say about the fragrance of Haslinger Schafmilch. It’s unscented. It’s as plain as the nose on soap’s face. I can smell some of the soap ingredients. It kind of smells like milk, and… soap. Yeah. I haven’t used this much. It’s a hard soap. I scraped some soap off of the puck, smushed it into my loading bowl, and bloomed it (which I never do). I scraped way too much soap. It’s a European hard soap. I should’ve known it would fluff like a marshmallow. Anyways, I loaded my vintage Vulfix brush and began lathering on my leg. After a while, there was enough lather that I started scraping it back into the bowl, just so I could get some water into the lather on my leg. My leg was fully lathered, I had all of that in the bowl, and I only picked up like half the soap. A little goes a long way, I guess. Eventually I didn’t have time to fuss with it anymore and had to call it good enough.

The Black Beauty I used today was found in my grandfather's half-bath while cleaning out my grandmother’s house (he passed years before she did). The date code is T3 which means this was made in the 3rd quarter of 1973 (well before I was born). This was my first time shaving with it. I was going to use it last year. But, there’s no Father’s Day in July. I cleaned it up last night and soaked in Barbicide before the shave today. I set the dial to ‘4’ because that's my setting on the Slim. It shaved at least as well as the Slim. Clogging was an issue, though. [Warning, gross] This is what I pulled out of it during the shave.

I ended up putting some Aqua Velva Musk on my face so I could smell it. There’s a ton of alcohol vapor splashing this on. I was going to make a joke about not standing near an open flame, but there’s actually a warning on the label about it being flammable until dry. What to say about this fragrance? It’s a classic cheapie. The musk is readily apparent. It’s leathery. There’s a core of powder. But, it’s overpowered by the musk. I’m able to smell alcohol long enough that I get a diesel scent effect. There’s a spice of tobacco, or maybe a warm spice like clove. There’s sort of an amber-like characteristic. It’s a bit cloying, but charming in a way, too. Sometimes I’ll reach for this if I just want to have something to smell and don’t want to use one of my frags. It sticks with you for a long time. This is an old-school masculine aftershave that has staying power, literally and figuratively.

I purchased this bottle of Antaeus on the bazaar. It’s the vintage formula that contains real castoreum. Antaeus is woody and animalic. It’s a Chypre fragrance. In the opening I smell warm resinous sweet spicy notes, dry woody notes, and an animalic note. Overall, quite balsamic. Once the top notes evaporate, the balsamic notes are more or less gone. The animalic note remains. I smell oakmoss. It's a bit earthy, but there's some floral notes as well, mainly rose. I don’t know what modern bottlings are like. But, this has strong projection and good longevity. This fragrance has an air of mystery to it that I enjoy. It’s intriguing, yet understated. It’s not loud, but it does have something to say.

Great lather from this soap, only the second time I've tried this amazing base and its vegan too. • Post Shave: Kenneth Cole – Black Aftershave Gel
    • Fragrance: Yves Saint Laurent – L’Homme EDT
    • The Lather: Not much to say about the lather here considering it’s a shave gel and I leg lathered it on. It’s as standard a canned goo shave gel as it gets.
    • The Shave: Well this is where the fun really begins. Last year I took berry day quite literally and shaved from the berries up. This year I decided I’d just go berries down like a sane person. So I got myself I nice picture of my quite hairy legs before I started and just did it a little at a time. Unfortunately long leg hair really does a number on a razor and it was stop and go the whole way so I could unclog. I was rather surprised at how hard it is to shave behind the knee, but alas I prevailed in the goal.
    • Aftershave/Frag: Since it’s father’s day I went with an aftershave brand and frag brand that were both created before I was born (1962 and 1982 respectively). The scents were fine, but the amount of aftershave my legs took made the Kenneth Cole a little overpowering.
    • Theme: Gillette was definitely founded long before I was born.
    • Challenge: Well this apparently is where we separated the men from the boys. Not only did I have to shave my legs, and yes I went all the way up (PROOF), but I also had to explain to my father why I was doing it. You see, I always try to see my father on father’s day. It may be a long drive to get there, but the older I get the more I realize what little time I have left with him. That meant I was staying at his house for the weekend, and I had to try and make shaving my legs make sense to a man who worked in oil and gas his whole life. I’m not gonna lie, if I wasn’t married with children it would have been even worse.
    • Acknowledgements: Thank you u/2SaintsDude for the frag for today’s shave.
    • Rant: Having seen so few people actually complete the days challenge is pretty weak. I expected to see some people not do it, but not in droves. Honestly, it’s a little disheartening to know that it’s very likely the winner of the games (possibly all top 10) won’t even have attempted one of the challenges. I’m a firm believer that every challenge should count enough to make a difference. Now I’ll get off this soap box lest everyone notice my shaved legs.

C.O. Bigelow is my go-to when I need to shave quickly without taking the time to make a true lather. I just spread some on my face and head, and then, take a wet brush to start the lather. I also use it when I go traveling too. It’s just convenient in that way. C.O. Bigelow is merely for ease of use and speed when I shave. The resultant lather isn’t overly outstanding in most instances. However, it serves its purpose, and for that reason, it’s indispensable.

Today’s Challenge: I was going to do this, but my wife thought it was a bit weird. I couldn’t argue that it wasn’t, so I didn’t go through with it.

A quick Google search and a Wikipedia click later: "The family business was founded by Michael Mäurer, and his stepson Andreas August Wirtz, who established a soap works in Stolberg in 1845. The company initially produced soft soaps, curd soaps, and fine soaps, which were sold in a local grocery store." The company has been around since 1845, with Tabac being produced since 1959. Some love it, some hate it, and I am one of those who love it. Not only do I like the scent, but I manage to get top-tier performance every time I use it. Semogue started in the 1950s, and Gillette in the early 1900s.

After last year, I told myself I would do leg day this time. I had to get out the door early this morning, so I didn't have time, and by the time I got back, I had talked myself out of it. My loving wife told me that was probably for the best since shaving your legs is the worst. She said I would cut myself a ton, which would be a terrible experience. Naturally, I had to prove her wrong. The problem was that the challenge states it has to be high enough for shorts, and short shorts raise your lifting max by at least 10 pounds. That means I have to shave at least high enough for my shorts that have a 5-inch inseam; oh boy. So I figured while I was at it, I should shave my chest again like last year, and quite frankly, the only hair I have left at this point is on my arms, armpits, and head. Obviously, there is only photo evidence of the chest and legs, but oh well. NSFW, seriously you don't want to see this NSFW.

    LG24-16: Father's Day

Mäurer & Wirtz has been around since 1939, and Yves Saint Laurent has been making perfumes since 1964. SIM fit the bill this morning and the amber fougère of Y Le Parfum worked well with the Moos.

The Knack is my grandfather's razor, which had become unusable after decades of neglect. After some cleaning, I finally got it back to a condition where I could use it. Mechanically, it's still not perfect, but it's fine for a shave here and there.

Brush: Simpsons Emperor 1 Super Badger
Razor: RazoRock Lupo 95 OC #CNC * Blade: Personna Red [1]
Lather: Proraso - Coarse Beards - Sandalwood Oil & Shea Butter - Soap

First use of the 95 OC plate on the Lupo - among several awesome shaving Father’s Day gifts from my loving (and generous) wife and daughter.
Proraso is definitely older than me so it was a good one for today’s theme. I hope everyone had a great Father’s Day.

    • Brush: Albright Rubberset Boar (said to be a family heirloom) #HOLLOW
    • Razor: Fatip Piccolo Slant Closed Comb
    • Blade: Feather – New Hi Stainless
    • Lather: Cella – Riserva Fresco
    • Post Shave: Aqua Velva – Classic Ice Blue
    • Fragrance: Creed - Royal Mayfair

To me, Cella Riserva Fresco smells old fashioned and kind of musty, like mothballs. Fortunately the musty smell dissipated somewhat when lathering, and the overall lather quality was good. Fine shave while using a Feather blade for the first time. This was also my first ever use of Aqua Velva. I chose Creed Royal Mayfair specifically for the mothball element. The marketing says it smells like a Gin & Tonic, which with the right ingredients is a great, fresh smell. But but the Royal Mayfair I just get musty lime and mothballs. So not "full bottle worthy" (as they say on r/fragrance), especially considering a full bottle would cost $350 or more.

Hope everyone had a great Father's Day! Today's featured work of art is Rembrandt's Return of the Prodigal Son.

June 16, 2024 * Brush: Zenith Moar Boar * Razor: Gillette Flat Bottom Tech * Blade: Gillette Silver Blue * Lather: Cella Milano - Crema Da Barba Almond - Soap * Post Shave: Clubman - Pinaud - Aftershave * Fragrance: Dana - Canoe

    A shave comprised of old brands: * Brush - Zenith since 1902 * Razor - Gillette since 1901 * Razor Blade - Gillette since 1901 * Soap - Cella Milano since 1899 * Aftershave - Pinaud 1810 * Fragrance - House of Dana 1932

What a fun theme. I never would've guessed some of these brands would be so old. Big shock at what Pinaud claims as their origination.

Today's challenge: Nah. There's fun challenges and then there's seeing what hoops you can force people to jump though. Congrats to all the monkeys, enjoy that 1/5 point.
