    June 2 - A RAWRing Good Time - Day 10

    • Brush: Semogue 610 21mm Boar

    • Razor: Gillette Flare Tip Super Speed F1

    • Blade: Sharp Star Platinum

    • Lather: Noble Otter - RAWR Soap

    • Post Shave: Lucky Tiger Splash

    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann - Vespers Splash

    • Fragrance: Spearhead - Seaforth! Black Watch EdT

Another great, early morning shave. I had to smush around soap to fill the ring of death again. That's a good feeling, as we're almost to the end.

Today it's gonna be a gloomy, brisk morning at work, and Black Watch seems fitting for such a morning. The cranberry and spice of Vespers make a lovely pairing for the bergamot and jasmine of Black Watch, whereas the heaviness of Mousse de Saxe in the splash seems to bind to the leather, oakmoss and plum of the perfume. It's a pairing I wouldn't have thought to work so well, but ultimately they combine into what I envision to be a cozy evening at a lodge, bundled up in a winter jacket next to a fire. I kinda miss winter.

June 2, 2024 - Ahoy, Lather Game * Brush: Yaqi Atlantis 24mm Synthetic #FAUXFUR #COMPOSITE * Razor: Aylsworth Razors - Apex-AL6063 #CNC * Blade: Gillette Nacet * Lather: Chiseled Face - Bay Rum * Post Shave: Noble Otter - Plunder Splash * Fragrance: Maher Olfactive

    FOF

    Today’s Theme:

Product must be Bay Rum. Check! I was able to keep the whole shave on theme. My picture today has an Old Spice lighthouse decanter from back in the day when you would buy this kind of thing as a gift for dad. I think it was made in the 80s and still has a lingering Shulton Old Spice scent to it, though any aftershave is long gone. The brush has sea shells and seaweed in the handle. The razor is Aylsworth Apex, well pirates were kind of an apex predator of the sea, and Aylsworth sounds like it could be the name of a first mate on a pirate ship. Could also be a British naval officer chasing pirates across the Carribean Sea. I used a Nacet for the crocodile logo. I can’t tell if it swallowed a clock though. Noble Otter Plunder is working for my theme perfectly as a scent and imagery. Finally, my fragrance Maher Olfactive Treachery also ties in great.

    Razor Review:

Since this is my first go with an Aylsworth Razor, I thought I would give my first impressions. I love the black and aluminum color combo. I don’t have a Henson, but the head looks similar to me. It is a very light razor. It would be very easy to apply too much pressure, but the feedback kept me from doing that. It is almost toast buttering like an MM24. I’ll need some more shaves to get it down, but so far it seems pretty good.

    Paleontology Day:

This is my third Lather Games. Some players immediately come to mind from past games. My first games, I got to see a shave on a train by u/OnionMiasma. Another journey shave was done by u/djundjilla giving us a bicycle tour of Switzerland. The Air Bud shenanigans of u/cowzilla3 started that year too. Last year, u/Priusaurus took up the torch of shit posters past. His ongoing and escalating feud with another participant was required reading. The threads can get very wordy in the games, but his posts were must read everyday. I think that is the best praise, because who takes the time to read everything?

    Feats of Fragrance Festic ~~F~~Themes:

I only have my soaps planned out, and a handful of fragrances. I figure this allows me to make a spontaneous change to better fit my mood or inspiration from the other players. After reading Onion’s post I knew I had to pivot a little. Side note: Either it was negligence, or a brilliant move against a competitor, not sure which, but running with cunning plan. I was originally going to use Old Spice aftershave and Plunder EdP. But reading about the treacherous betrayal that happened to Onion, I remembered Shawn Maher’s scent Treachery. It was perfect for today.

Bay rum is a scent that plays with spices. The bay is West Indies bay, not the dried leaves you throw in a soup or in Old Bay seasoning to completely cover crabs. (Blue crabs in particular, not the kind a pirate would get having fun ashore.) West Indies bay gets mistaken for cloves in scents. In fact, many bay rum scents may use clove oil instead of the bay. So I started with a foundation of traditional bay rum from Chiseled Face. Plunder is today’s sponsor’s riff on a bay rum, adding cannon smoke and rum/grog. This combo alone was wonderful as Plunder adds an extra layer of depth to bay rum. Topping it off with Treachery took the scent to a fantastic level. It has spice elements and whiskey to tie into the base laid down by the soap and splash. The whiskey adds a smokiness to play with the black powder cannon smoke of Plunder. I think it is the tobacco scent that wraps it up with a bow. I think I could consider the combination the scent of the captain’s quarters on a pirate ship. He has the spices and tobacco plundered from merchants, and the lingering cannon smoke from attacking those ships. He leans back in his chair, drinking his rum thinking, “It’s a pirate’s life for me.”

    Sponsor Time:

Noble Otter is one of my favorite soap artisans. I have a lot of their products and many are on my desert island consideration. Barrbarr, Rawr, and Thé Noir et Vanille are my top three, but the order changes from time to time. The Plunder I used is discontinued, but I think it is still available until Cody runs out. This brand was in the first couple of artisan soaps I purchased and is usually a must buy for me. Except Batter’s Up, I’m not down for green bell pepper in my shave.

    June 2, 2024 – I’m on a boat!

    • Brush: Chisel and Hound Bangalore V20 #composite #SHD
    • Razor: Univilions – Kamisori Shavette #KAMISORI
    • Blade: Some blue box Artist Club blade from Maggards (1)
    • Lather: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Sea Spice Lime
    • Post Shave: Old Spice – Old Spice Original
    • Post Shave: Viktor&Rolf – Spice Bomb Infrared

Went to bed feeling sick, woke up feeling only slightly better, but LG waits for no man. Ahoy! Nautical themes today! SSL seems to cause some interesting talk each year. I was shocked to find out from u/USS-SpongeBob that “Seaforth” has nothing to do with the Sea, but SSL is clearly nautical, referring to “waves crashing over the deck” in its marketing (among other things.) Wo! To anyone who uses Spiced though today. The shave…sucked. The cheap AC blades I have have no sharpness, they scrapped, and my skill with this Kami is non-existent. Normally I’d ride out the shitty shave but after 2 passes I finished with the injector because while sick I want to feel clean. But I did do 2 full passes with this shavette, and my face feels it. The weck may be better actually. While “pirates” theme makes the most sense I suppose for #photocontest I’m still figuring that one out. So instead let’s do some Humor in paying tribute to u/Priusaurus. When I asked my kids how to work this in they immediately said “Dinosaur”, so the SOTD photo is a cheetah (which I gather is supposed to be me) attempting to steal the dinosaur’s shaving stuff. Actually, this is a story in photos, so here’s cheetah being arrested by FredBird. (Something to be said about my daughter’s thoughts on my winning this year). Now I confess, the layout here is odd, but my daughter set it up while I was looking for the kami. My wife walked in and went “What…are you teaching her.” I commented “I swear there’s a story here that’s…well it’s still weird, but at least it makes sense.” Stay tuned because Cheetah’s exploits are making a comeback (but not as “Animal”.)

For #fof, SSL trifecta would have been boring. Instead, I wanted to try something new and pulled the spice note through the shave. I followed up with Indian Old spice, and then Spice Bomb INFRARED. Which…apparently causes my TV to randomly change channels when I walk by. My daughter apparently is trying to join u/cowzilla3’s family because she declared Old Spice “the best” and Spice Bomb “pretty good.” But SSL got a “yuck.” Overall, the progression seemed to work as we went from citrus with a hint of spice, to spice with a hint of citrus to spice only (and magic TV tuning rays.)

    • Brush: Galepromot Brown Badger #WEDONTNEEDNOSTINKINGBADGERS
    • Razor: Gillette Slim Adjustable #ADJUSTABLE
    • Blade: Wizamet (3)
    • Lather: Henri et Victoria – Navigateur
    • Post Shave: Areffa Soap – Discoverer
    • Fragrance: Chatillon Lux – Admiral

    Daily Theme: Ahoy, Lather Games!

Theme justification: Henri et Victoria Navigateur is nautically themed. The scent description talks about the Caribbean seas and a fabled beast that sailors fear is enhanced by the fragrance’s freshness. Plus, it has a sailor on the lid.

Relevant Post Shave & Frag: Navigater. Discoverer. Admiral. These are all titles that can (and have been) bestowed on seafaring individuals. One, though, stands out. Christopher Columbus. While he’s a little controversial today, there is no doubting his historical significance. He “was an Italian explorer and navigator from the Republic of Genoa …” who was given the rank of “Admiral of the Ocean Seas” by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. He is, rightfully or not, also often considered the discoverer of the New World.

So this shave is a Christopher Columbus themed shave. No genocide is endorsed or was caused by this shave

Fun fact, I tried to bring up the topic of changing Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day when I was an intern. The person I told this to (who has since left) told me, “Why? Everyone has skeletons in their closet.” I dropped the idea. I should bring it back up.

    Scavenger Hunt Justification:

Razor facts: The Gillette Slim is an adjustable razor.

Brush facts: The brush was purchased on Amazon. Per the listing, it is badger brush. For $5, it has to be the lowest quality badger available.

    Daily/Special Challenge: Paleontology Day

/u/Priusaurus is a good dude. He’s sent me a couple smushes over the past year, and has always been willing to answer questions. Was his win last year legitimate, or did was the win stolen from /u/OnionMiasma? The world may never know. The record books, however, have /u/Priusaurus as the rightful ruler. Plus, as he showed yesterday, he has the hardware to prove his victory.

So, to honor him I shaved with his beloved Worcester IceCats goal horn playing on repeat. In addition, /u/Priusaurus, I’ll send you the cash to cover the price and shipping if you win this auction for $5 #NotABribe

Also, since he is the one that is responsible for the Remote Learning Group Buy, I incorporated Doritos into my shave today. I didn’t have any Nacho Cheese Doritos, but I did have a new bag of Spicy Sweet Chili. I crushed them up and added them to my nearly complete lather. Here it is all mixed together, and here it is on my face. Please don’t judge my lather. I was using a very terrible brush and then I added Doritos to it. The shave actually wasn’t too bad. HeV is a good, slick base, but the nice smell of Navigateur was overpowered by the Doritos. 2/10. Do not recommend adding Doritos to your lather.

    Frag description

    Chatillon Lux Admiral

Look, right now the only thing I can smell is Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos. Admiral, though, is one of my favorite CL frags (again, it would be a lot better if the lemongrass and riverboat smoke wasn’t accompanied by Doritos). In a normal wear, it does transport you to the Mississippi River. Might just be me, and local STL people can chime in, but it takes me back to walking near the Arch right by the river.

Okay, so let’s talk about today’s shave. This was my first (or second; cannot fully recall) using HeV. It’s quite nice. Between them and MacDuff’s, I’m starting to think Canadians know what their doing with shave soap.

The brush, though, I’m 99% confident is actually a boar brush. It’s listed as badger on both the Amazon page and the packaging, so that’s what I’m going with for my hardware points. I’m just glad I will never have to use this one again. It went straight into the trash after the shave, which is where it would’ve ended up before too long regardless. It lost, seemingly, 20% of its hairs during the shave.

““Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” -Mike Tyson” – Priusaurus

Guys. I had a plan today. I had a plan to start off the SOTD by telling you all about the USS Constitution – Old Ironsides.

I was gonna say it’s the most badass ship in the US Navy and built in 1797, this majestic ship earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" during the War of 1812 when it’s oak hull was swatting down British cannonballs like Dikembe Mutombo blocked shots in the 90s. Old Ironsides wagged its figurative figure and said, “No, no, no! Not in my house!”

I might’ve even showed you a video re-enactment I made of the War of 1812, complete with the music from the 1812 Overture, with rubber duckies representing British Ships and Old Ironsides defeating all of them as cannons bounced off it’s hull.

Then I’d go on to say that despite being outgunned and outnumbered in battles, the Constitution emerged victorious time after time after time, becoming a symbol of American naval prowess and overall badassery. Over the years, it underwent numerous restorations to preserve its historical grandeur and is the oldest commissioned warship in the Navy. That’s right – Old Ironsides never retired and is still part of the Navy - complete with Naval Officers and crew still serving on the ship today. And it’s a BFD if you get stationed on the USS Constitution.

And I’d finish the story by saying: This ship is living proof that “they don’t make them like they used to”. When she was built, the expected service life of a ship like this was 10-15 years, and here she is, beautiful as ever, sitting at 227 years young. So, let’s raise a shot of Bay Rum to Old Ironsides in honor of Ahoy Lather Games! A day celebrating ships, pirates, and all things Old Spice!

Then I’d do the big reveal and say that today, I’m going to toast Old Ironsides the Lather Games way… By packing up my shave stuff, getting on the train, and shaving in front of this storied warship! But… That’s not what I’m doing today. I, unfortunately, have to attend a funeral today, so a trip to The Charlestown Navy Yard is out of the question for today’s shave. So instead, I have the next best thing. A toy boat as a stand-in for Old Ironsides! Surrounded by rubber ducks, representing the many, many British warships that The USS Constitution took out! So, everyone out there is just gonna have to imagine this is The USS Constitution. Got it? Good.

And what better to shave with than a smoosh from Mr. Old Spice himself, u/cowzilla3. I requested a smoosh of Endurance because it received a 5 out of 5 in both Oldness and Spiciness in The Great Spice Off. And Old Ironsides is the oldest and spiciest ship in the Navy, so it’s fitting.

Really happy to be shaving with a DE after yesterday’s fiasco with the Rolls and it is nice to shave in the comfort of my bathroom, instead of one bench away from a sleeping homeless person.

For #FOF: So this scent journey worked better in theory, than it did in practice. Old Spice and Bay Rum go together like Doritos and Mountain Dew, but then adding the aquatic fragrance of Atlantis on top of it did not mesh as well as I hoped for. If I was in this just for the smells, I would’ve could’ve should’ve picked a spicy fragrance, maybe a spicy amber like 3 Scots… But I was really leaning into the ship/nautical theme and didn’t put the smellz first.

Challenge: Soooo…. Ummm…. Real talk guys: What’s an appropriate way to honor myself? Like if I come out and proclaim myself to be the Greatest Lather Gamer in the History of the Lather Games, is that too much? Plus, I don’t think that’s true (yet). Others have placed in the top 5 for a few years in a row, and I’ve only won once (so far). I guess it would be a bit obnoxious to do that, so I’ll just say I had a good run last year and someone better come kick me off my high horse this year or else I’m going to be REALLY insufferable for the next 13 months.

Soap theme justification: Used the spiciest and oldest smelling Old Spice Dupe

Relevant Post Shave & Fragrance: Ahoy indeed! I hit all three the potential theme options for the day (1) Old Spice Soap: Check (2) Bay Rum Splash: Check, (3) Nautical Themed Frag: Check.

    Ahoy!

I really struggled with today as I had a plan , but a package has still not arrived so in honor of u/Priusaurus I followed the direction of a famous Paleontologist and had to PIVOT! into this setup for the day.

    Soap Justification.

“Indulge in a unique and captivating shaving experience with “Isla Muerta” bay Rum shaving soap” Now I’m not sure how unique this shaving experience was, but it was a pleasant one.

    Aftershave

I went with CB Azure, because it is stupid hot here and I wanted the Aquatic notes to contrast the spices of Isla Muerta

    Fragrance

Nautica Voyage 2 reasons I picked this today. 1. The name alone ties into today’s theme. 2. Even though it has a lot of green in it, it’s very Aquatic and goes well IMO with Azure.

Razor and Brush. They just go well with the today’s theme and soaps cover art.

Photo Contest theme Pirates. For the last 32 years I have worn an eye patch. So My entry for today is me holding my gear.

Old Spice: smells like my grandfather. For better or worse, the soap, on account of being very old, has nearly no scent. There is the lightest clean musk left, and that’s about it. The splash, however, is strong. The last (and only) time I used it, my partner told me something to the effect of “never wear that again.” Well, I’m breaking my vow, but I cut the splash with some Stirling unscented toner, which helped significantly. Undiluted, the splash is a punch in the face of aldehydes and florals, but today I was presented with light, powdery florals, gentle citrus, and hints of spices. As I write this, it has dried down to a lovely floral musk, which still smells like my grandfather, but won’t land me in relationship-ending situation. To round out the shave and sailing theme, this dupe of Xerjoff 40 Knots emphasizes the powdery florals while adding an additional honey sweetness, but like the Old Spice splash, should be used conservatively due to its intensity. #FOF

Alright, I can’t say much about u/Priusaurus beyond what’s likely been said today. However, last year, Prius won in part due to his interview series. The creator of Old Spice is (I assume) dead. Even if they were alive, they probably wouldn’t know as much about OS as u/Cowzilla3. So, Prius, as the saying goes, imitation is the highest form of flattery — and hence I present you all with:

    10.5 Questions with…Cowzilla3

    1) First, why Old Spice?

There’s a jokey rant to be had here about why you don’t even need to ask that question – Why Old Spice? Because! But I’ll go against type here and answer honestly. I couldn’t tell you why I like it so much, honestly. There’s definitely nostalgia to it as I know my grandfather wore it but my dad did not so it wasn’t like it was a daily scent for me growing up. In fact, I’m of an age that for most of my life Old Spice has been owned by P&G and yet… the scent resonates deep in my core. But also… BECAUSE!

    2) What exactly makes it so special?

Everyone is going to be real disappointed I’m answering these seriously, I think. But I believe what makes Old Spice so special (or at least did) was its ubiquity. For a certain set of generations, Old Spice was just the smell of fathers/grandfathers. Everyone knew it. There are few other scents that were so ubiquitous that they kind of became a generational marker attached to feelings of family, love, and closeness. You got a hug from your dad or grandpa and there was a very good chance you smelled Old Spice. Considering scent is one of the strongest senses in terms of memory and emotion, that makes Old Spice truly special.

    3) Do you think you’ll ever tire of Old Spice?

Do you tire of asking stupid questions? (There, that’s the funny one.)

[INTERVIEW CONTINUED IN THE REPLY TO THIS COMMENT]

2024-06-02 - Where has all the rum gone?!

    • Lather: Zingari Man - The Navigator
    • Razor: Bambaw Sea Green #RAINBOW
    • Brush: Moar Boar #SUBBRUSH #OLDWORLD
    • Post Shave: Captain's Choice - Venture
    • Fragrance: ALT. Fragrance - The Scent of Beach

Ahoy, Lather Games!: Nothing is more nautically-themed than Navigator.

    Unifying Theme: Seafaring/Coastal
I feel like this is probably a self-evident extension of the day's theme. The whole brand of Captain's Choice fits. The Scent of Beach, while not strictly nautical, fits with the seafaring theme. Consider the following from the description of The Navigator:

Sandy-footed step by sandy-footed step, a man walks along the sun-warmed wooden planks of a dock.

I'm not going to insult you with a lengthy explanation; you get it.

    #photocontest Water-faring vessels
I said I wasn't going to strive for all the photo things, but I'm also not going to avoid them. That's a Jolly Roger on the right side of the photo, so that could work for pirates. Meanwhile, there's also obviously the bow and figurehead of a ship on the soap label, not to mention the stern of the ship being eaten by Santa Claus on the left. So I rolled a two-sided die and I'm going with the ships for water vehicles.

    Paleontology Day:
In past years, I've never known what to say for this particular challenge. However, considering u/Priusaurus' journey last year, I knew immediately what to do today: I wrapped that Jolly Roger around my neck and went to Pei Wei.

Side note: I recently discovered that shemaghs are not only excellent for keeping the sun off your neck, but are surprisingly cooling. Which is good, because we keep getting these "extreme heat" alerts/warnings, which are entirely redundant. Like yeah, we know; why don't you shut the hell up, Alexa, and let me know about the two or three days in January when there isn't an extreme heat warning.

    But I digress.

As with last year, it was opening-time on Sunday at Pei Wei, but there was no one else there this time. I got my food, settled down, and proceeded to shave.

Wait, today's shave was back in my own den? You're god damn right. Shaving in public has been done. It's old hat. Nobody wants to be the guy who shaves outside of a mom-and-pop Thai restaurant, scaring away all of the customers just because you don't want to be outdone by some guy who shaved in a Pei Wei while he was under the influence of drugs. I mean, drugs that you can get at any Starbucks because that's literally their whole business, but still!

Maybe—just maybe—I can once again serve as an inspiration for the most dedicated players, but this time toward sanity. You don't have to do this, u/Priusaurus. Dial it back, for your own sake. We're worried about you. Really.

Either that, or step it up. You don't just have to out-do everyone else, you have you out-do yourself from last year, and I gotta say, you've got a long way to go...

    #FOF
Navigator purports to be a woody aquatic scent. What really stands out to me, which I've not been able to figure out, is that it smells like salty sea air—or enough like it that this desert-dweller doesn't know the difference. I smell those sandy-footed steps.

I do wish that Venture and Scent of Beach were a better pairing with Navigator, but they both trace back to Aventus. Venture is a straight dupe, I believe, and I dare assume the name is even a nod to Aventus. In a way, they do work well, evoking fruit cocktails on a tropical island. I find Venture to be too fruity, however, like my head turned into a big ol' pineapple and I just want to cut it off.

Scent of Beach is actually a dupe of a scent called The Scent of Peace, which itself took inspiration from Aventus. Today, Scent of Beach picks up where Venture left off, and somehow turns the dial up even further. It's more well-rounded than Venture (not the highest of bars, granted), but it is loud. The Vice City motif suits it well. I guess that's not a huge departure from the coastal theme, but man, I really miss the sandyfooted steps on the dock right about now, but General Tso distracts from it all pretty well.

    • Brush: Frank Shaving – Silvertip Synthetic 20mm #FAUXFUR #RUNT

    • Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
    • Lather: Captain’s Choice – Bay Rum Soap
    • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. – Bay Rum Splash
    • Fragrance: Paco Rabanne - 1 Million Eau de Toilette

Bay Rum is one of those scents that there seems like damn near every artisan makes one. Kinda like Barbershop scents. But unlike Barbershops, I enjoy trying Bay Rums! It seems like there’s a lot more variety in Bay Rum scents than Barbershops.

Plus, Bay Rums have the distinction of being tied to Pirates… And who doesn’t like Pirates?? Okay, besides Captain Phillips’ crew and people living the Caribbean in the 1700s?

Sidenote – Pirates were basically the terrorists of the 1700s, but pop culture has turned them into family cartoon characters, when in real life they were pillaging and doing other bad things to anyone and everyone. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. But I’m not saying it’s a good either. Just saying it’s weird.

I got curious about the history of Bay Rum, as a scent, and this is pretty much what I found: Once upon a time, in the 1500s, Sailors stunk. Like smelled so bad they would rub Bay Leaves on all over themselves. And obviously Rum was plentiful on these ships, so they started steeping the bay leaves in rum as a way to extract the essential oils from the leaves. What they created smelled so oddly fantastic that the sailors immediately knew they had stumbled upon an aromatic elixir like nothing that ever existed before. They started dunking everything in rum and bay leaves—dogs, laundry, even grumpy grandpas. Pretty soon, the whole ship smelled like a boozy forest, and when they arrived at port, the locals ladies wanted them and the local men wanted to be them. Everyone was convinced these sailors had found the secret to eternal charm and questionable sobriety.

Word of this newfound scent traveled far and wide, attracting curious tourists and pirates alike, who hoped a splash of bay rum would make them irresistible. The concoction became so popular that sailors began smuggling barrels of it instead of gold. By the time anyone realized that bay rum wasn't a magical love potion, it was too late—people were hooked. From grizzled seafarers to fancy city folk, everyone wanted to smell like a tipsy tropical paradise. Thus, bay rum became a legend that we celebrated today.

Anyways, Captain’s Choice Bay Rum is alright – it’s no B&M or Mike’s. Doubt I’d pick up a full tub of this, but it gets the job done for today.

As far as #FOF is concerned: I love Bay Rum Scents and 1 Million plays very well with Bay Rum soap and splash. It’s spicy with leather. And I’m pretty sure wearing leather was part of being a badass pirate, so I imagine I’m shaving and smelling like a well-groomed pirate today! Were there well-groomed pirates? Or is that like saying “good looking wetshaving hobbyist”?

Challenge: u/Priusaurus was like the first one to send me smooshes in this sub and really made me feel welcome during my first games last year. He sent a couple smooshes my way this year too. He’s a good guy and great figurehead of this sub. To honor him, I have 10 questions for you, Priusaurus!

    1. A/S/L?
    2. Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?
    3. Pick a number between 58 and 921?
    4. What’s it like being the only former winner competing this year?
    5. Do you think you’re the favorite to win this year?
    6. Who’s your favorite WWE wrestler of all time?
    7. If animals could talk, which do you think would be the rudest?
    8. Do I owe you royalties for doing a daily numbered series this year?
    9. What’s your favorite fun fact?
    10. Who’s getting a Spite Shave this year?

    imhonestlylying’s Daily Top 5:

In honor of “Ahoy Lather Games!”… The Top 5 best Pirates of all time:

    5) Blackbeard – Like Cher or Madonna, he only needs one name and everyone knows who he is.

    4) Anne Bonny – Broke the glass ceiling and proved women can be pirates too!

    3) Long John Silver – Even has a restaurant named after him!

    2) Capt Hook – His entire life’s was dedicated to feuding with a boy that doesn’t grow up and he clearly felt some kind of way about that.

    1) Capt Jack Sparrow – Quite possibly the worst pirate you’ve ever heard of, but you have heard of him!

    For #photocontest: black and white

    • Brush: Chisel and Hound Resolute V20
    • Razor: Karve CB SB-D
    • Blade: Personna Lab Blue
    • Lather: Zingari – The Navigator
    • Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Sea Spice Lime

Navigator is an obviously nautical themed scent, even having notes of “marine” and the art of an old Greek appearing ship. Perhaps the those sailors may appreciate the fire in the SOTD photo, nodding to Prometheus. This soap brings back relatively newer memories for my memory lane LG. It’s a grassy, fruity floral scent; grounded in salty sea spray. More green than I was expecting. It’s pretty clean overall, like a cool sea spray while boating off of Cape Cod while fishing for Strippers. Afterwards, heading into Wellfleet for oysters while popping in and out of shops and galleries. You catch aromatic flowers and greenery off of wind gusts from the landscaping and the more perfumy musks are wafting out shop doors. There is an undeniable saltiness on your shirt, the drying of the seaspray which lingers with you. It’s not a scent that has you feeling like your in the murk of an estuary or sometimes harshness where the land meets water; but bringing the middle of the ocean to a small little town. I’ve had plenty of Cape memories since I moved to New England, and this scent hits that more lively spring into summer time period where everything is blooming.

The elements: Fire is for the #photocontest which helped me create this- my propane blowtorch assisted charcoal cooked meal.

To honor u/priusaurus, I hope was able to rep Massachusetts, although it’s not quite the same as spooky Salem shaves, Mass restaurant shaves, or a real beach shave. Each one incredibly dedicated and impressive.

    June 2, 2024 – LG 2: Ahoy, Lather Games

    • Brush: Chisel and Hound V8 #SHD #COMPOSITE
    • Razor: Karve CB Brass #CNC
    • Blade: Astra Green (9)
    • Lather: Declaration Grooming – B Cubed
    • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Spice
    • Fragrance: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! Spiced

Today we honor the great u/priusaurus. Today, he shaved with Karve, so I shaved with Karve, he used a CH brush, so I used a CH brush. He talked about the USS Constitution aka Old Ironsides, so I have to wake up and fly out fly from California to Boston to take a photo of Old Ironsides, and go below deck myself. Then, I fly home. Or maybe it was a few years ago, but imgur says today. Also, let’s shave outside today, which is rapidly becoming Prius’s MO, including yesterday and several last year. What better way to do it than using the mirror of a Prius. I’ll say pass 2 I opted for the window reflection, which was way easier than craning my neck and trying to take photos while shaving. Thankfully my across the street neighbors who were outside couldn’t see me too well and the kids on bikes didn’t seem to pay much notice to the weirdo shaving in his front yard. #PHOTOCONTEST A Prius (duh).

I don’t know how y’all find past LG links etc. with such ease, you sure as fuck must not be using Reddits search. So, I will just name a few of my favorite from last year: his ice bath, his 2nd ice bath, getting booted from the Thai restaurant, kids sprinkler toy, and of course the butt plug razor.

For todays theme and #FOF played it pretty safe. Went with B Cubed, the newer version of Blackberry Blossom Bay. A berry and blossom inspired Bay Rum for the “refined seafarer”. Of course we had to get some old spice dupe in here too, and what better than one of our sub’s favorite artisans in BM Spice, complete with boat on the bottle. Although Seaforth! Spiced is not actually a direct old spice dupe, it clearly pairs well. Also, it made it into u/cowzilla3’s great spice off, which is gospel in these parts. To quote the man himself “Basically, despite all those words I wrote above mocking people for suggesting it as an Old Spice dupe, it is, in fact, partly an homage to that very scent. You can see this in the scent list of the soap: Mandarin, Aldehydes, Carnation, Anise, Cinnamon, Clove, Cardamom, Benzoin, Tonka, and Vanilla. Every scent there aside from cardamom is also found in Old Spice as long as you count mandarin as an orange, which I think we can all agree smell exactly the same. (Watches perfumers get increasingly angry at my complete lack of actual knowledge).” I will say overall, I don’t think all the bay and slightly sweeter B Cubed actually paired to well with the modern play of vintage old spice accords, but the latter 2 compliment each other plenty well. I think 3 Scots actually would have tied the soap and splash together better, cest la vie.

Oh, and I wore my Noble Otter shirt because they are cool and today’s sponsor, as seen in one of the photos.

soap brands 2/30, post shave 2/30, frag 2/30, post/frag linked 2/30, software sponsors 2/16, hardware sponsors 4/2, razor hashtags 2/15, brush hashtags 2/15, photo contest 2/30, daily challenges 1/25, special challenges 1/5

    June 2, 2024 - Ahoy, Lather Games!

    • Brush: Heritage Erskine Gel Boar #RESURRECTIONBRUSH #TOLL
    • Razor: Ever-Ready 1912 #TWINS
    • Blade: GEM PTFE (13)
    • Lather: AA Shaving - Gale
    • Post Shave: Captain’s Choice - Bay Rum
    • Fragrance: Southern Witchcrafts - Arcane Abyss

Theme: Gale is an aquatic storm fragrance. Check out the nautical label. Bay Rum is Bay Rum. Arcane Abyss = Cthulhu of the sea.

Challenge: I have included a humorous book with a dinosaur on the cover in my SOTD pic in honor of /u/Priusaurus amazing performance last year.

As soon as I open the lid of Gale, I'm greeted with notes of ozone, melon, and violets. I'm a fan of petrichor scents, and this ocean storm take is right up my alley. I find this fragrance calming and relaxing; perfect for a late night shave. The soap base is nothing to write home about. It's good enough. But, I'd like more slickness, especially when using a GEM.

Captain’s Choice Bay Rum is very aromatic. The bay smells fresh and takes center stage. There’s slight sweetness with a touch of anise to complement the spicey bay note. I didn’t have much discomfort when I used my alum post-shave. However, this aftershave shocked my senses. I could’ve sworn I was feeling a strong cooling effect. But, no cooling agent is listed in the ingredients.

FOMO drove me to buy a trifecta of Arcane Abyss when it was re-released a few years ago. The first thing I notice is oud. Then, a mixture of lavender, cedar, and aquatic notes roll in. That is underpinned by subtle amber and an inky smoke. I’d classify this as an oud/aquatic. Like many Southern Witchcrafts creations, Arcane Abyss creates an air of mystery. It’s too pretty to truly conjure images of Cthulhu emerging from the depths. It's an interesting fragrance which draws you to delve deeper exploring its tasteful composition.

The gelled boar knot isn’t the best at picking up soap. I couldn’t get much volume from my lather. Maybe the pig was hungry. The backbone is good, but a little less than ideal. It feels nice on my face. It’s probably as close to silver-tip as a boar knot can get.

The Ever-Ready 1912 I bought to get the twins tag last year finally gets used again to get the tag this year. It’s not my favorite GEM. It’s not the worst, either. It’s not quite efficient enough for a good ATG pass.

#photocontest Water Vehicles. Here’s a better view of the kayak under my porch I used in my SOTD photo.
